In many ways the SEO community for the most part has only embraced the “semantic web” in their search engine optimization implementation in the last 2 years. To date the tools used by SEOs for implementing schema, entity and concept/topic discovery have been one dimensional and too often writing poorly written code into your page. If there is a tool that emulates Google’s NLP and analysis of a keyword corpus I have not seen it! That changed a few weeks ago when I came across InLinks a new tool by Dixon Jones of Majestic SEO fame. Mainly consists of keyword usage, the tags being used in the page, templates, titles, H1 tags, and alt attributes on images.  It is checking at how the page is rendered. Stephan recommends that if you are looking for research reports and the like, and you find a 404 error, just hit the back button, click on the green arrow, click on cached. There and then, you've got the version of the page that Google has still stored in its index. Technical Audit It is about making your website and backend more acceptable to Google bots. Mainly consists of canonical tags, duplicate content, contents of robot.txt, XML sitemaps, etc. If you are doing a big site migration, make sure that you have made a small change to the XML sitemap that contains all the old URLs. Don't redirect that old file containing all the old URLs. Stephan looks at the technical piece as the foundation of the building. If the foundation is weak, you're in big trouble. Link Audit It is all about the external link profile – how people are linking to you, not how you're linking out to them. Stephan suggests looking for toxic links, because you will be targeted. Also, make sure that you're not getting a lot of toxic links by monitoring at least quarterly using Link Detox from LinkResearchTools. Do clean-up – includes a disavow file, and ideally, an outreach campaign to those owners of those terrible websites and demand that they remove the link.   SEO Penalties vs. Updates Algorithmic Penalty is a misnomer Stephan shares about the SEO BS Detector and SEO Hiring Blueprint – A seven-step process. What to do if you already contact the websites that are linking to you and they won’t stop. If they require payment, NEVER PAY!  Updates are not penalties The penalties can come from the SEO practices or the toxic links that come to you but not on updates. There are hundreds of updates that happen over the course of a year at Google and the vast majority we never hear about. You may learn about Google Hummingbird in The Art of SEO. Google BERT is not really something SEO practitioners and website owners should worry about.   Expertise, Authoritativeness, Trustworthiness Valuable Content & Remarkable Content You don't need to have the most valuable piece of content out there on the particular topic, but it has to have something about it that is worthy of remark. Building trust in your website is more important because more trust flow leads to more citation flow, and you would definitely want that. If you have a high trust, high authority, look at the sites that you're trying to do business with, and make sure that they have high trust and high authority too because Google understands when you have a business relationship with a site. Stephan implies that if you are in the ‘link-inate’, that means you have high trust and high authority. To check your site’s trust level, use Majestic SEO and LinkResearchTools. The group kicked off with Anne talking about a program she is trying that enables you to leverage video in a marketing campaign. Tim asked about newsletters and if the video program would be worth a look. Bill Slawski joined the group and we discussed Bill's post titled ranking factors. It seems Bill had his snarknado on because after receiving kudos from the group for not including NON BS factors and his sensible approach to implementing SEO to achieve maximum visibility on the post. Bill went on to share his motivation for the post (beyond training material for his employer) and in his feelings about Brian Dean's posts on Rankbrain and Google Ranking Factors. Bill's share started the group down the path to discussing how they choose the content they read. Terry apparently thinks SEJ should be avoided, however, Doc disagreed saying Danny Goodwin (past editor of Search Engine Watch) had improved it substantially. The group went on discussing Rankbrain and in particular how misleading posts tried to share how to optimize for Rankbrain. Eventually the group moved on to "Mobile First" index and crawling and Bill shared some info on what it means and doesn't mean for desktop ranking. Bill also shared that Screaming Frog will crawl larger sites due to a setting to increase memory or store it on disk! It turns out Anne is experiencing issues with gmail where people who were invited to gmail who had a "." in their name were receiving email for people w/o the dot in their name. Terry shared how these sorts of unfixable glitches aren't new and gave 302 hijacking on all Search engines as an example. As the group signed off Terry went on a rant about the new policy by Majestic SEO where accounts that aren't used for 25 days will be deleted if the user doesn't login. The long march of the Penguins continuesas acore update to Googles algorithm caused quite a bit of excitement among Penguin watchers over the weekend but their exuberance proved to be flightless. Jimthinks it was a version of the rules-rewarding Phantom update., but Gary Illys, however, says it has nothing to do with any animals whatsoever.Panda not part a real-time ranking event but it is part of the core algorithm. To me this means Panda remains more like a filter through which Google runs and sorts results. Google says it updates itself live-time, a function of dozens, if not hundreds of parts of the core algorithm(s) that sort information. Gary Illys also states Panda is not live-time but part of the core algo. This might sound confusing but if you think about it a second, it gives us a better look at how Google actually works. Photocopy of the webandSorting results sets based on several factors, including regionalization, personalization, and hundreds of on-page signals.The return of the Google Dance which has come about through the efforts of webmaster trends analyst Gary Illyes and search quality analyst Nathan Johns will happen on March 2, from 7:30pm to 11:00pm PT, at the main Google campus. Para todos aquellos que os interese mejorar, monitorizar, optimizar y un montón de cosas más que terminan en –ar os presento unas cuantas herramientas: Herramientas para control de enlazado y trabajo linkbuilding * Ahrefs: sin duda una de las herramientas que mejor detecta los enlaces entrantes y salientes de cualquier página. Nos permite conocer en un simple clic, las webs que nos están enlazando a nuestro sitio y las que estamos enlazando, pero esto no es lo mejor, lo cojonudo es que podemos hacerlo con las webs de la competencia. Que necesitamos enlaces para nuestro site, pues pasamos ahrefs a las 5 mejores páginas de nuestra competencia y ya tenemos un montón de sitios posibles donde intentar dejar un enlace apuntando a nuestra web. Podemos decir que esta es su función principal, pero tiene tropecientas más. En primer lugar hablar de su DR, el valor que otorga a cada dominio dependiendo del enlazado que recibe. MI PRINCIPAL MÉTRICA PARA COMPRAR LOS DOMINOS CADUCADOS. Otra opción importante es la de broken lincks, nos da una lista de los enlaces rotos que existen en cualquier web, y eso permite tanto controlar tu web como detectar enlaces a dominios expirados de la competencia. Precio 79$/mes la versión más barata * Majestic SEO: otra de las herramientas de referencia para medir la calidad y cantidad de enlaces que posee determinada página. A diferencia ahrefs, Majestic nos ofrece varias métricas y las dos que mayor relevancia tienen son el Trust Follow y el Citation Follow. La primera hace una valoración en cuanto a calidad y temática de los enlaces que nos apuntan y la segunda hace referencia a la cantidad. Lo ideal es tener unas cifras equilibradas y proporcionales. Por supuesto tiene muchísimas utilidades, pero la más alucinante es Clique Hunter que nos permite ver los enlaces entrantes de una lista de dominios y los compara y muestra las relaciones entre ellos. Klout Launches Business Portal, is Gunning for Brands, From CNN Money The "social media influence" measuring startup has announced that it will be launching a business portal design to attract big-name brands. Klout is launching Klout for Business, with a goal of providing brands with an insight into their social media audiences. The free analytics dashboard for companies will allow brands to learn what social networks they resonate best on, popular topics, and how influential their fans and followers are. The dashboard also gives companies insight into when posts or tweets are most influential during the day. With 500M Push Notifications Sent Each Month, Mobile Backend Platform Parse Unveils an Analytics Service, From The Next Web Sending 500 million push notifications per month, the application development platform known as Parse has announced that it will be offering analytics on its services. Parse is a mobile backend-as-a-service that provides develops with the tools and services they need to create iOS and Android apps. A huge aspect of those tools is push notifications that developers can use to improve the user experience on these apps. Parse says that not only will they be introducing analytics on its push notifications, but analytics on how many times an app or push notification is opened. Facebook Working on Incorporating the Hashtag It seems that Twitter’s most iconic marker may soon find its way into Facebook timelines across the globe. Facebook is currently working on incorporating the all-powerful hashtag into its social network. For those of you unfamiliar with the hashtag, it is heavily used in Twitter as a word or phrase proceeded by a # symbol that groups similar topics and events. Facebook hasn’t yet decided how far they will follow in Twitter’s footsteps with the hashtags, but we’re certain that Twitter will not be happy. The two companies are already competing for online advertisers, and Facebook’s adoption of the hashtag could affect Twitters bottom line. Small Twitter Advertisers Can Now Target Ads Like Big Brands, From Marketing Land Twitter has announced that it will be providing its more advanced dashboard features, normally available only to big spenders, to smaller companies. This release of “advanced” features gives smaller brands the same tools and options that large-scale Twitter advertisers are using. Twitter warns that once users switch over to the “advanced options” there is no going back. Although these features offer smaller advertisers more options, deeper analytics, and improved targeting, it may be too complex for some. Study Finds Google’s Penguin Update Getting Stricter Over Time, From Search Engine Land A recent study by Portent, an Internet marketing company, illustrates that Google is getting fed up with spammy links floating through its search engine. Google’s Penguin algorithm will be targeting websites for a rank drop if they have as little as 50 percent suspicious links in their link profiles. Portent analyzed 100,000 links from the top 50 sites on the Inc. 5000 list of 2012. Using SEOMOZ and Majestic SEO data, they scored links as spam based on the relation of the page to the page being linked to and the page the link was coming from. Through this process they found more than 250,000 links pointing at penalized websites, and 250,000 links pointing at non-penalized websites.
