Classic Ghost Stories
Bone to His Bone by E. G. Swain

Edmund Gill Swain, born on the 19th of February 1861 in Stockport, Cheshire, was a respected English cleric and author known for his contributions to the ghost story genre. Educated at Manchester Grammar School and Emmanuel College, Cambridge, Swain pursued Natural Sciences. Ordained as a deacon in 1885 and a priest in 1886 at Rochester, he served as a curate in Camberwell before assuming the role of chaplain at King's College, Cambridge, alongside the notable scholar and author M. R. James. The two shared living quarters within the college, fostering a collegial relationship that extended beyond their professional roles. Swain's duties included teaching at the college's choir school, showcasing his multifaceted engagement in academic life. His literary legacy reached a notable point with the 1912 publication of "The Stoneground Ghost Tales," a collection that demonstrated his skill in the supernatural and positioned him as an early imitator of James, leaving a lasting imprint on the genre. Within the collection, "Bone to His Bone" stands out as a quietly intriguing narrative. Set on a Christmas Eve, the story follows Reverend Bachtel, seeking matches in the dark, only to encounter a mysterious book on gardening. This spectral tome, once owned by a long-departed rector, subtly guides him to a specific spot in the garden. The unfolding events, marked by an understated approach to bibliomancy, reflect Swain's ability to handle hauntings without sensationalism. "Bone to His Bone" quietly underscores Swain's finesse, blending a touch of gentle humor with the supernatural, presenting a nuanced exploration of the ghostly that avoids overstatement. There's an election coming in the next year or so, but how much does the public ever get to hear about how the main parties choose their candidates for political office? That's what Rob Parsons has been talking about this week with the broadcaster Michael Crick, who followers of politics over the last 40 years will know is the esteemed broadcaster and journalist who was a founding member of the Channel 4 News Team in 1982 and has served as political editor of Newsnight. He's also a former pupil of Manchester Grammar School and a Manchester United fan for his sins. But the main reason he's on the podcast is that Michael is the man behind the fantastic Tomorrow's MPs Twitter account which sheds a light on the often secretive and murky way the main parties choose the candidates for winnable seats in Parliament. You won't want to miss this interview if you want to know how politics really works from a journalist who really has seen it all. *** The Northern Agenda is a Laudable production for Reach. This week my guest is educator and fundraiser, Ian Thorpe. Ian was one of the Surmasters or Deputy High Masters at Manchester Grammar School whilst I was a pupil there, and has a fantastic story of how his career progressed. His focus was inspiring - to help boys like himself, from financially constrained backgrounds, gain access to the best possible education after government funding ceased to support them. Since Ian set up the MGS Bursary Appeal in the late 90s after the withdrawal of the Assisted Places Scheme, hundreds of boys from all over the Greater Manchester and the North West UK have benefited from the fund, now called the MGS Trust. Some of you will know that Manchester Grammar is a huge part of my history and it was a pleasure to catch up with Ian as I'd not spoken to him in around 13 years. You can find more information about Manchester Grammar School and the MGS Trust by visting mgs.org. This episode is sponsored by UTC Events. This week I'm talking to Olivier award-winning live entertainment producer and entrepreneur, Louis Hartshorn. Louis was in the year above me at Manchester Grammar School and was always to be found in the drama and music departments. Since leaving school he's tracked a path that's not frequently followed by those who leave the grammar school system and one that even fewer have become successful upon. This conversation was an absolute delight to have - we actually recorded this sitting in Jay Gatsby's office on the set of the Immersive Theatre production of the Great Gatsby, so you might hear some goings-on in the background. -- If you'd like to support Sod's Law you can become a Sod's Law patron at patreon.com/sodspod from as little as £1 /$1 a month - there are different tiers including ad-free episodes, giveaways and more!

The Big Bang theory is well-established, but how complete is it? Does it describe the absolute beginning of physical reality, or is there perhaps more to be discovered that might place it in a broader cosmic context? We welcome the award-winning British science writer Brian Clegg, author of dozens of popular science books in print, for an engaging and thought-provoking conversation on his book Before the Big Bang—an interview conducted, specially for The Mind Renewed, by TMR's "roving reporter" Mark Campbell. Born in Lancashire, UK, Brian attended the Manchester Grammar School, then read Natural Sciences (specialising in experimental physics) at Cambridge University. After graduating, he spent a year at Lancaster University where he gained a second MA in Operational Research, a discipline developed during WWII to apply mathematics and probability to warfare, and since widely applied to business problem solving. From Lancaster, he joined British Airways, where he formed a new department tasked with developing hi-tech solutions for the airline. His emphasis on innovation led to working with creativity guru Dr. Edward de Bono, and in 1994 he left BA to set up his own creativity consultancy, running courses on the development of ideas and the solution of business problems. His clients include the BBC, the Met Office, Sony, GlaxoSmithKline, the Treasury, Royal Bank of Scotland and many others. Brian now concentrates on writing popular science books, with topics ranging from infinity to 'how to build a time machine.' He has also written regularly for numerous magazines and newspapers, including Nature, BBC Focus, BBC History, Good Housekeeping, The Times, The Observer, Playboy, The Wall Street Journal and Physics World. His books have been translated into many languages, including German, French, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, Chinese, Japanese, Polish, Turkish, Norwegian, and Indonesian. Brian has given sell-out lectures at the Royal Institution in London, and has spoken at venues from Oxford and Cambridge Universities to Cheltenham Festival of Science. He has also contributed to radio and TV programmes, and is a popular speaker at schools. Most recently he appeared with the BBC's business editor, Robert Peston, teaching him quantum theory, took part in a feature on time travel to accompany the movie Looper and took part in the University Challenge Christmas Special. Brian is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts, a Member of the Institute of Physics, was a Royal Literary Fund Fellow at Bristol University and is also editor of the successful popularscience.co.uk book review site. This month’s podcast guest Dr. Simon Gallier shares with us his unique journey through life and his ground-breaking approach to applying the principles of the John Lewis Partnership into dental practice ownership.   After leaving Manchester Grammar School for Manchester Dental School, Simon became an army cadet and this led him from the Army Dental Corps to becoming part of an elite group within the Parachute Regiment. Not your every-day dental career pathway.   Having moved from the military back to Civvie Street (although he continued for 10 years in the Reserve Forces), Simon soon started buying practices including two dental and one aesthetic clinic in Harley Street but it wasn’t long before he was looking at retail high-street dentistry, many years before Boots and others considered this distribution method.   He pioneered the use of lasers in UK dentistry and became Clinical Director of a major corporate before returning to his independent search for excellence.   Along the way came a fascination with the vision that had taken John Lewis from one store to the company they are today and their philosophy of making all employees “partners” in the growth of the organisation.   Today he is CEO of Future Health Partnership, a revolutionary micro-corporate who embrace the employee partnership philosophy.   As well as hearing all about Simon’s extraordinary journey, we will hear some of his guiding principles, based on what he learned in the military, in retail and in corporate life - messages for all owners and managers about what makes elites successful - and how to play at the top of your game whilst serving your community.   You will learn how to transform a workforce who turn over at 20% per annum into a team who stay with you for 20 years.   P.S. a medal of valour for Ashley, who came to this interview the day after Manchester City had clinched their second Premier League title and two reds interviewed a true blue!
