The last century saw a revolution in life expectancy. And this revolution will require us to shift what we do at every age and will demand a transformation of every aspect of our society. Most of us are now expected to live much longer than previous generations. But instead of seeing this as a precious gift of extra life, we see it as a burden, with ageing populations dogged by infirmity, dependent on an ever-decreasing number of young people to support them. Andrew J. Scott – the world's leading expert on the economics of longevity - argues it doesn't have to be like that. Our longer lives can be a source of hope and fulfilment if we seize the opportunity to invest in our health, skills, finances and relationships to support a flourishing longer life – for ourselves, and for the planet. The singer Lizzo, and her production company, are being sued by three former dancers. They have been accused of sexual and racial harassment, disability discrimination, false imprisonment and creating a hostile work environment. Tom Murray, Senior Culture Reporter for the Independent, tells Nuala exactly what's in the lawsuit. Rock Follies was a 1970s TV series about an all-female rock band, The Little Ladies, trying to make their mark on a male-dominated music industry. A new musical adapted from the TV series is currently on in Chichester. Nuala is joined by Rula Lenska who played Q in the original TV series and Zizi Strallen who has taken on the stage role. Jodie Ounsley is the world's first ever deaf female rugby sevens international player, and she was part of the Woman's Hour Power List of women in sport. She also uses TikTok to show others what it's like to live with hearing loss. She joins Nuala to talk about being on the Power List, as well as being one of the brand new Gladiators. All this week we're looking at loneliness, and today we're asking: what impact does it have on society at large? To discuss Nuala is joined by Noreena Hertz, an economist and author of The Lonely Century, where she explores how increasing isolation has consequences for our economy and our democracy. Would you use fig and pine nut hand scrub? Or perhaps some tree gum anti-wrinkle cream? Just a few of the 16th century beauty recipes Professor Jill Burke has included in her new book How to be a Renaissance Woman. Jill joins Nuala to talk about sixteenth-century women's body anxieties and the men who wrote them beauty tips. Presenter: Nuala McGovern Producer: Lottie Garton

I believe human beings want more than anything to feel seen and heard. Last week the US Surgeon General declared loneliness a public health epidemic, as deadly as smoking up to 15 cigarettes a day, raising the risk of premature death by 30%, with higher rates of heart disease, stroke, anxiety, depression, dementia, and suicide. Here's my 2021 conversation with NOREENA HERTZ about her book, THE LONELY CENTURY: How to Restore Human Connection in a World That's Pulling Apart. You can learn more at noreena.com

This is the loneliest century, says economist Noreena Hertz. Even before the pandemic forced us to stay home, loneliness was snaking its way through our lives, affecting everything from how we vote to how we work. Professor at University College London and author of the book, The Lonely Century, Noreena has some sage advice for businesses: about how less loneliness fuels more productivity, the bottom-line advantages of in-person connection over virtual interactions, and why values like kindness, community, and care are key to attracting and retaining talent. Technology is a double-edged sword, Noreena says, but we can use it to turn our isolation around, if we embrace the opportunity.Read a transcript of this episode: https://mastersofscale.com/danny-meyer-layoffs/Subscribe to the Masters of Scale weekly newsletter at http://eepurl.com/dlirtXSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Two years of coronavirus have made the growing loneliness crisis even worse— with greater social isolation causing personal pain and mental and physical illnesses."Even before the global pandemic introduced us to terms like social distancing, loneliness was becoming the defining condition of the twenty-first century. But it's also one we have the power to reverse," says our podcast guest, economist Noreena Hertz. Numerous surveys have found that reported cases of loneliness have jumped in recent decades. More than three-in-five Americans told a 2020 poll, conducted before the pandemic, that they felt left out, poorly understood, and lacking in companionship. Noreena Hertz is the author of "The Lonely Century: How to Restore Human Connection in a World Pulling Apart." Her book is a personal and deeply-researched investigation into the roots of the loneliness epidemic and what we can do to come together. In our interview, we discuss the importance of the workplace in enhancing community, the need to reinvigorate our neighborhoods, and how governments and private enterprises can react to the increase in loneliness and alienation. We also learn more about the link between loneliness and the rise of right-wing populism. In many different ways, the social fabric of our community is being pulled apart, causing an increase in polarization and a loss of confidence in democracy and civil institutions. Technology, including social media, migration, a radical reorganization of many workplaces, and the transactional nature of commerce have also led to a broader sense of isolation. We discuss solutions in this episode.Recommendation: Richard and Jim use Wikipedia, which is celebrating its 20th anniversary. What do university students in Britain and Trump voters in the United States have in common? They're lonely. In fact, Noreena Hertz says, loneliness is the defining feature of this century, thanks to a host of drivers ranging from the technological to the economic. The Progress Network founder Zachary Karabell joins Noreena, an economist and author of The Lonely Century, as she elucidates whether we're really more lonely than we used to be, what has led, pandemic aside, to our current state of hyper-loneliness, and which solutions—individual, governmental, and entrepreneurial—she thinks are the best bet for reconnecting us. This conversation was recorded in May 2021. What Could Go Right? is produced by The Progress Network and The Podglomerate.

Over the last few weeks the newsletters that have achieved the most resonance were related to having a friend at work. For many of us our favourite jobs were enhanced by having a desk buddy - or a group of friends we could laugh with. But for many people their experience of work is increasingly lonely - maybe they had friends when they were in the office but that experience has transformed in the last two years. Yes, we've managed to get our jobs done, maybe our domestic life has even improved but work just feels a little more isolated and joyless. How big an issue is this for us? Noreena Hertz is here to persuade you this silent spread of loneliness has wide reaching consequences, both for our organisations and for our societies. In a brilliant and wide-ranging discussion we discuss why loneliness matters and what any of us should be thinking about to make our experience of work more complete. “Loneliness thrives in an ecosystem that its drivers are structural, and political, and economic, as well as to do with choices we make as individuals, and therefore that its solutions need to be comprehensive. That we can solve today's loneliness crisis, but only if we as government, we as business leaders, and we as individuals, make a decision to do so.” -- Noreena Hertz
Noreena Hertz, who is a renowned economist and author of The Lonely Century (one of WIRED's picks for the best books of 2020) explores why this is the lonely century, how we got here and what each of us can do to help reduce loneliness for ourselves and our communities."With one in five adults, saying that they felt lonely often or all of the time, with one in five millennials saying that they didn't have a single friend at all and with 40% of office workers, saying that they felt lonely at work" Hertz felt compelled to explore this loneliness phenomenon. "As I started looking at this data I realised that we were really, in the midst of a global loneliness crisis, a crisis that was affecting our health or wealth and the state of our democracy."
“Having come out of months and months *starved* of human connection… our need and desire and *demand* for shared, in-person experience with others is going to really rise.” This is one of the many true remarks Noreena Hertz makes, in speaking with producer Ken Gordon, on the latest episode of *The Resonance Test.* Hertz, a British economist and bestselling author of *The Lonely Century: How to Restore Human Connection in a World That's Pulling Apart,* effortlessly spins out stories and data and insights about the job loneliness is doing on us. In her book Hertz writes: “A lonely body is not a healthy one” and in conversation she adds: “When we're lonely our blood pressure goes up. Our heart rate goes up. Our levels of cortisol, our stress levels in our body, go up. All of these essentially signaling to our body: ‘Stop being lonely. Go and find people to hunt and gather with. Go and find your tribe.'” But loneliness isn't merely bad for our health; it's bad for business. “Lonely workers are less productive, less motivated, less efficient, more likely to quit a company than workers who are not,” says Hertz. Hertz draws our attention to what she calls the loneliness economy and says it can be a win-win for us all: “If you can sell people authentic communities that speak to their needs to connect with others, you're gonna have a significant customer base.” Ultimately, Hertz hopes we will use our experience as lonely people to create a more relational form of capitalism. Let's hope she gets many readers. Humanity can use the help. Host: Kenji Ross Engineer: Kyp Pilalas Producer: Ken Gordon

Economist and author Noreena Hertz joins Ross Ashcroft to discuss.
