"In 1964, Eddie Wilson had it all. He had genius. He had vision. He had the hottest rock n' roll band in the country. Then, suddenly one night, his car went off a dark New Jersey bridge. His body was never found. But his dream was never lost. And twenty years later, the mystery of Eddie Wilson begins to unravel." For this week's episode, we are discussing the 1983 Rock and Roll mystery of 'Eddie and the Cruisers.' The movie stars Michael Paré, Tom Berenger and Ellen Barkin. Co-written and directed by Martin Davidson. Based on the 1980 novel of the same name by P.F. Kluge. Buy Mitch a Coffee account.venmo.com/u/Mitch-Hampton-1 Special note to listeners: We are releasing three episodes as a set- actress Lee Purcell's solo interview, director Marty Davidson's solo episode and their combined episode discussing their work together on their iconic film "Almost Summer". “Inside The Episodes: Lee Purcell Marty Davidson and Almost Summer” I have long loved the movie Almost Summer; indeed  I have one of those long and vintage movie posters of it hanging conspicuously in my home. But of course any movie of whatever quality has many creative souls who contribute to its realization in the world.  Lee Purcell, who is one of the well known cast of Almost Summer, has had a most illustrious career since the 1970s. Our interview occurred right on the heels of an anniversary of the movie Valley Girl - in which she plays one of the parents. Featuring Purcell on our show is a real joy as she has had a career in Hollywood for decades and knows more about how movies are made than many. She also had great stories from her life and career.  Martin Davidson of course is the director of the film; he also was a filmmaker who was one of the first to feature, among others, Sylvester Stallone and Henry Winkler in his now classic and famous The Lords Of Flatbush. He has had a long career in Hollywood since the 1970s and was an early forerunner in directing for HBO and other similar networks. Like Purcell, his interview was dense with great stories.  Sandy Davidson has had a long career in wardrobe and costume design for movies and television, including Hero At Large with John Ritter, Eddie And The Cruisers with Tom Berenger, and t.v. movies like Something To Live For; The Alison Gertz Story. Additionally she is also accomplished in home and commercial interior design as well, including the world famous (but now defunct) The Foundry On Melrose in Los Angeles. Almost Summer is her first movie. Of course having an episode with all of them is what our podcast is really all about: I am grateful to them for their generosity and contributions.  In the episode with all four of us I more or less watched or listened and learned an enormous amount.  I hope you enjoy all three of these episodes as much as we did creating them. David Lee Madison developed his love for film as a very young man. At the age of five, he had already seen and loved all of the original Universal horror films. Throughout his teen years, he appeared in Neil Simon's Brighton Beach Memoirs and James Lemmo's Heart starring Brad Davis. Dave's recent work includes Emerging Past- a film he produced and in which he appears alongside his childhood idol, Stephen (Fright Night) Geoffreys, in a very funny scene.Mr. Hush, which he wrote, produced, and directed, has become a cult classic. Martin Davidson is the Johnson & Higgins Professor of Business Administration at the University of Virginia's Darden School of Business and he currently serves as their senior associate dean and global chief diversity officer. He holds degrees from both Harvard and Stanford and was on the faculty at the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth prior to arriving at Darden in 1998. His book, The End of Diversity as We Know It: Why Diversity Efforts Fail and How Leveraging Difference Can Succeed, introduces a research-driven roadmap to help leaders more effectively create and capitalize on diversity in organizationsIn this episode, Stew and Martin discuss the reasons the diversity and inclusion efforts often fail. Martin reviews ways that leaders can create diverse and inclusive organizations that work by, among other things, embracing the weird. He describes a proven, practical model for seeing real sources of difference, understanding them, and engaging in experimentation to create positive change that benefits collective interests. It can be done! And, as two bass players, they talk about how the purposes served by that musical instrument are analogous to those pursued by people striving to create meaningful dialogue and growth in organizations. Here then is an invitation, a challenge, for you, once you’ve listened to the conversation. Ask yourself this question: What’s the most critical fissure in the social life of your work team or organization; what, in other words, really divides members in ways that subvert your collective goals? And what would you need to do to better understand the implications of that source of disconnection?  At the age of five David  got his first taste of film making at age nine, when he was an extra in Hero at Large, a John Ritter film directed by Martin Davidson. Throughout his teen years, he appeared in Neil Simon's Brighton Beach Memoirs and James Lemmo's Heart starring Brad Davis. Dave's recent work includes Emerging Past- a film he produced and in which he appears alongside his childhood idol, Stephen (Fright Night) Geoffreys, in a very funny scene. Mr. Hush, which he wrote, produced, and directed, has become a cult classic. It stars Brad Loree (Michael Myers in Halloween: Resurrection), Stephen Geoffreys (Fright Night, 976-EVIL), and Steve Dash (Jason Voorhees in Friday the 13th Part 2). Mr. Hush enjoyed a limited, US national theatrical run in NYC, LA, San Francisco, Atlanta, Dallas, northeastern PA, and Pittsburgh. It was released nationally on DVD and Blu-ray on August 7, 2012 and spent 6 weeks on Redbox's genre top 10 list. In 2012, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences requested a copy of the Mr. Hush script to be placed in the permanent core collection of the Margaret Herrick Library to be preserved forever. In 2014, Dave started a podcast/radio show titled The End of the Night. In his first 10 episodes, guests included Corey Feldman, Doug Bradley, David Naughton, Brian O'Halloran, Harrison Page, Tiffany Shepis, Fred "the Hammer" Williamson, G. Tom Mac, and Tony Moran, just to name a few. In November of 2015, Dave released his film Middle Village. Its theatrical debut was at the historic Cinemart Theater in Queens, New York. It has garnered Laurels from the Forwardian Film Festival, and has received overwhelmingly positive reviews. It was featured on whatchareading.com's list of the best films of 2015. The film features his dear friend, Brian O'Halloran (Clerks 1 & 2, Mallrats), Ray Abruzzo (Mad Men, Sopranos), Scott Schiaffo (Clerks) and WWE Superstar Gene Snisky. .

Sandi Toksvig meets two people who travelled to research their family histories. Television executive Martin Davidson knew his German grandfather must have fought in the Second World War but was shocked when he discovered him to have been a member of the SS. He went to Berlin, Prague and Prussia to try and understand what had driven him to become such an enthusiastic and unrepentant Nazi. Sports presenter Rob Curling's father was also a soldier but served with the Gurkhas during the emergency in Malaya in the fifties. He was drawn to travel to modern day Malaysia to discover more about that period of his parents' life and the country where he himself was born. Sandi also talks to theologian and 'freelance missionary' Margaret Hebblethwaite about why she started a hotel in southern Paraguay and how she came to write the first and only English guide book dedicated to this little known country. Producer: Harry Parker.
