Cabbage is the ultimate cruiser vegetable with endless options. Here are 10 ways Nica uses cabbage on board.   Summary  Cabbage is a perfect vegetable for cruising. It stores well, is nutritious, and can be used in so many different ways. You can eat it both raw and cooked.  Long after other vegetables have been eaten or spoiled, cabbage is still good. So what are some of those amazing options?  You can add it to a stew or casserole for more fiber. It fills out a stir-fry when other vegetables are in short supply. Cabbage is delicious in slaw, both with mayonnaise and a vinaigrette dressing. Of course, kimchi and saurkraut are delicious options. And you can roast it in your oven or on the grill.  So how do you make the most of it while cruising? First, don't cut into the head. Take individual leaves off, leaving the solid core. Second, store it in a cool, dark place. They were built for speed and not as heavily armored or armed as a battleship.  Heavy Cruisers were named for major cities and state capitals.  Battleships were named for states. Farmers markets are a great provisioning option for cruisers. Produce is often fresher and less bruised. And if it hasn'tbeen refrigerated, it will keep longer on your boat.  As we head into peak harvest season in many places, count on farmers markets for provisioning. Why? Goods are usually fresher, picked locally, and not trucked across the country. Produce is often unrefrigerated, making it key for storage aboard. Finally, it's usually less bruised, offering a longer shelf life and better flavor. And it's not only produce you'll find. Look for fresh eggs, homemade baked goods, cheese, and meat with fewer preservatives (although they will last less long). Best of all, you can ask vendors questions about what they're selling. You can find farmers markets around the world. Every town has its specialties. Ask everyone in your local cruising network for locations. And, if you're sailing the ICW, you'll find farmers markets near many marinas and anchorages. Oneof the largest is the West Palm Beach GreenMarket, which runs from October through April.     Three things to consider when planning to leave somewhere on your boat. Hint: Arrival time is often the key. Summary  Planning a trip by boat is far more complex than a trip by car. You can't simply decide when you'll leave and start out. There are actually three factors you need to think about when planning when to leave on the next leg of your journey. First, ask yourself when you need to arrive. Do you have to align your arrival with the tides? Or perhaps daylight? Then your calculations are a bit more complex and require some thought. Secondly, what is the weather? Do you need to arrive somewhere ahead of a weather front? Perhaps you need to leave an anchorage that is not optimal for the weather coming in.  Finally, how will your boat's speed affect your timing? On this week's episode of The Video Store Podcast, I'm recommending four movies. They're all from the 1980s and 1990s and all have some connection to my home state of New Jersey, even if it's a loose one. These aren't big studio classics. They're weirder, smaller, and have built and kept loyal followings for decades.The Toxic Avenger (1984) Made by Troma Entertainment, this is probably their most well known film. It's low budget, violent, and absurd. It was shot mostly in New Jersey, including many areas near where I grew up. The studio itself was co-founded by Lloyd Kaufman, who grew up in NYC but often filmed across the Hudson for budget reasons. The Toxic Avenger became Troma's mascot and eventually got cartoon spin-offs, comics, and a stage musical.The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension (1984)This one is hard to explain in a sentence. Peter Weller plays a neurosurgeon who's also a rock star and physicist. It's sci-fi with a cast that includes Jeff Goldblum, Ellen Barkin, and John Lithgow. The film didn't do well when it came out but has built a steady fanbase over time. While it wasn't filmed in New Jersey, it is rife with Garden State references.Eddie and the Cruisers (1983) This is a fictional band movie that takes itself seriously. It was shot in various New Jersey shore towns. The soundtrack, especially the song “On the Dark Side,” ended up doing better than the film. Led by Michael Paré plays Eddie, the film has a solid cast, but its the music that helped it build an audience. Most of that happened because it became available pretty quickly on HBOClerks (1994)Kevin Smith's first film. Shot in black and white for under $30,000. He filmed it at the Quick Stop convenience store in Leonardo, New Jersey, where he worked at the time. This movie launched his career and started what would be known as the View Askewniverse. It's mostly just two guys talking about things that interest them in intense and funny ways, but it worked. These films offer more than just entertainment. They provide a look back at different moments when movies could be made with local flavor and for these ones, a personal vision. When you're just starting out, how do you find the support you need as a new cruiser? Well, I have a few ideas for you. There are great ways to build your support network--both practical and emotional--while cruising. Summary One of the biggest things that makes living aboard and cruising easier—by far—is having a support network. And I'm not just talking about having friends and family who don't think you're totally nuts, although that definitely helps.   Support comes in many forms. The trick is knowing where to find it—and not being afraid to tap into it.   Start off online. I've met so many people who are generous with their time, knowledge, and experience. You'll also find user and special-interest groups of all kinds. But don't just get lost on the internet. Lift your head and look around you.  Say hello to the crew aboard the same vessel as yours. Shout-out at the local cruiser's net for people in similar situations--homeschooling parents, pet people, snorkelers, singlehanders, whatever. Rhode Island's multi-platinum John Cafferty & the Beaver Brown Band, will be celebrating 50+ years in the business with the release of "Sound of Waves," a new 13 song album, their first in 37 years. In 1982, John Cafferty was commissioned to write and perform the soundtrack for a film that turned out to be "Eddie and the Cruisers,' a rock cult classic with a triple platinum soundtrack. Cafferty's soulful, raspy voice propelled the movie's theme "On the Dark Side" to # 1 on the Billboard Rock charts and the MTV video charts, while the movie's second hit "Tender Years" rose into the Top 10 of the Billboard AC charts. Today John Cafferty and the Beaver Brown Band continue to tour around the world. That tour will bring them to NYC for an album release concert at the Cutting Room on Thursday, April 10th, the same date as the album release, from Moonstone Music. According to Cafferty, the new album almost didn't happen. After almost four decades of not writing and recording new music, he was encouraged by Bruce Springsteen to do it again. Over the years, Cafferty and company have jammed on stage with many of the greats of rock and roll, including Bob Seger, Bruce Springsteen, Jon Bon Jovi, Dion, and opened on tour with the Beach Boys, Foreigner, and Bryan Adams. Starting May 28th, Cafferty joins Rick Springfield on his "I Want My 80s Tour" for selected dates, along with John Waite and Wang Chung."The 'Sound of Waves' album is a celebration of a lifetime legacy as musicians and 50+ years as a band. The songs are newly written with a respectful reflection of colors from an era of music's diverse history and the precious life moments and loving relationships that have served as our hearts' inspiration," said Cafferty. The title track from the group's 1985 album, "Tough All Over" became their second # 1 on the Billboard Rock Charts and the song "C-I-T-Y" reached the Billboard Top 20. Over the years, John has placed 35 songs in major motion pictures. They included Sylvester Stallone's "Rocky "IV," and "Cobra." The Farrelly Brothers hit films "There's Something About Mary" and "Dumb and Dumber Too," & Eddie and the Cruisers I and II. The lead single from the group's upcoming album is "Day In the Sun," which was spotlighted in Peter Farrelly's film "Rick Stanicky." With the Japanese taking control around the Pacific in early 1941, it became apparent that more resources and ships would be needed if there was any hope to defend against and defeat those forces. It was determined that several previously manufactured vessels could be converted to better suit the needs for this type of warfare. This is why a Cleveland class light cruiser was turned into an aircraft carrier, becoming the USS Princeton (nicknamed “Sweet P”). From humble beginnings it had incredible exploits in the Pacific Theater of World War II. In this episode we explore what life was like aboard this vessel from the people who were aboard, ” detailing various battles in the campaign against the Japanese, every day decisions, and technical aspects of such a ship.
