Chapter 2: Coosh (vocals) and Pete Rizzi (bass).New Jersey's red hot heavy rock/metal band WHO ON EARTH who will be releasing their new album, It Takes The Village, on May 8thCurrent Singles: Vigilance For Fans Of: Iron Maiden, Dio, Queensryche, Ozzy, Ghost, ClutchAbout: Who On Earth cut its teeth through relentless gigging across the New York tri-state area, with founding members Coosh and Pete previously tearing up stages as MadHaus. During 2020, the longtime collaborators shifted focus from covers to original material, quickly writing ten songs and entering Sonic Stomp Studio with producer Mike Orlando (Category 7, Adrenaline Mob). Joined by drummer Joe D'Aqui, the group crafted a heavy, story-driven sound rooted in influences like Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, Metallica, Alice in Chains, and Tool. Despite pandemic delays, the sessions yielded their debut full-length album Blame', released in October 2022.Following the addition of guitarists Bruce Gatewood and Johnny James Barone, the band gained traction with a heavier reimagining of Toto's “Hold the Line,” now their most-streamed track. Lineup changes continued with drummer Howie Fallon joining in 2024, bringing renewed chemistry and power, though tragedy struck later that year with the passing of Gatewood. In late 2024, Jimmy Kocha joined, filling the role of co-lead guitarist, solidifying the lineup that is currently in full force today. Honoring his legacy, the band pushed forward, releasing the Smoke & Mirrors EP in March 2025—a sharp, socially reflective six-song release. The group is currently at work on a new full-length album, slated for release in early 2026. Chapter 3: Pipeman interviews Southern California's newest force in melodic death metal, Ravenmocker, and their second single / music video “Where The Raven Flies” to follow their debut track "Infallible."The new single continues building the band's identity: soaring melody, cultural storytelling, and a modern take on the melodic death metal spirit once championed by acts like Children of Bodom, Insomnium, and Kalmah."Where The Raven Flies" is an anthemic, cinematic track that tells the origin story of the Raven Mocker, a cryptid from Adirondack and Cherokee lore. Known as a harbinger of death, the Raven Mocker feeds on the sick and dying, stealing the remaining years of its victims' lives. The single paints vivid imagery of the creature soaring over forests and villages, acting as both reaper and omen.Click Here to Subscribe to The Adventures of Pipeman for PERKS, BONUS Content & FREE GIVEWAYS! Interview by Kris PetersIt's been almost ten years since Finnish melodic death masters Insomnium last graced Australian shores, but that means nothing now with the band is set to bring their signature blend of haunting melodies and crushing riffs to fans Down Under this May.Founded in 1997 in the Karelian city of Joensuu, Insomnium first gained recognition in 2002 with their wintry debut In the Halls of Awakening. Quickly building on this with fierce death/doom juggernaut Above the Weeping World (2006) or melancholic masterpiece One for Sorrow (2012), the band surprised everyone with their sublimely beautiful, achingly forlorn Argent Moon EP in 2021, only to shed their skin once more with Anno 296 in 2023, proving emphatically that Father time has no grip on pure metal.HEAVY recently spent some time with bass player/unclean vocalist Niilo Sevanen to get the rundown on what we can expect. We start by asking what has changed with Insomnium in the eight years since we last saw them."Well, our guitarists keep changing," he laughed. "Jani Liimatainen left the band last year, or the previous year actually, and now we have a touring member guitarist, Tomy Laisto, touring with us, and he's an excellent friend of ours. Excellent player, very good singer, super nice guy. And he's kind of a permanent live member at the moment. Let's see what happens with our guitarist situation in the future. But at least at the moment, we're touring with Tommy and Australian's are going to get to witness his vocals and his playing. I can promise he's an excellent guy."For the benefit of those who may not have witnessed Insomnium live before, we ask Sevanen to run us through a typical performance."On the albums we are very serious and sad and melancholic and dramatic," he began, "but I think the live show is more about having fun. So we are having a good time there. We hope people are enjoying too. It's a lot of headbanging and good times, and we try to deliver a very energetic show every time, no matter how jet-lagged or tired we would happen to be. But once you go on stage, you forget everything, and you get your energy up and for that hour or hour and a half, you'll be on and after that, it's time to rest again. But for the shows, we give everything we've got."In the full interview, Niilo provided more details about their current tour, expressing confidence in the live performance of the new material, noting positive crowd reactions and describing the shows as energetic and fun. Additionally, he mentioned their collaboration with fellow Finnish band Omnium Gatherum, enhancing the concert experience for fans.Reflecting on the band's origins, Niilo recounted how he and Markus started Insomnium in 1997 in Joensuu, Finland, inspired by melodic death metal bands. He highlighted the vibrant 90s music scene in Joensuu, and the challenges faced by aspiring musicians today. Niilo explained the band's evolution from imitating their influences to developing a unique sound that blends progressive metal, black metal, folk metal, and doom metal. He emphasized the organic nature of their creative process, where all members contribute to songwriting and arrangements, ensuring the music aligns with their identity, and more.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.
Welcome back to the Metal Debate podcast, breaking down the new release from British metallers Ingested titled The Tide Of Death And Fractured Dreams. The album begins with “Paragon Of Purity.” This song is exceptionally tight and focused, with the band unleashing a healthy helping of slam riffs, but also an outstanding reoccurring melodic guitar lead which, two-thirds of the way through, morphs into an intense solo. The song closes in violent fashion with a rolling breakdown and vocalist Evans exploding in a cascade of demonic spit-growling. Track two, “Endless Machine,” is a mid-tempo number in the classic slam vein, although it wanders toward tech death territory as it progresses. “Where No Light Shines” has an eerie synth overlay that creates a simple but effective basis for the song's melody, with the guitar later replicating the synth. It's a great example of how to seamlessly integrate the death and slam approach. I absolutely love the atmosphere that's created - just smart, considered songwriting. Probably my fav track on the album. Next up we hear the brutal harmonization of “Starve The Fire.” Evans pulls out nearly every vocal tool in his arsenal, with growls, screams, vocal fry, pig squeals, and rock singing. Guitarist Sean Hynes stays in a support role on this one laying a heavy foundation on guitar with mostly slam riffs and eschewing any lead break. Unfortunately, and despite some memorable lyrics and melody, “Starve The Fire” didn't seem to be building to anything as an overall composition, and then it just kind of ended awkwardly. On “Expect To Fail” we have plenty of brutality but also the addition of clean vocals performed by Josh Middleton of Sylosis. It's another mid-paced track, with Jeffs occasionally revving the engine, but mostly the band taking a moderate, meandering approach throughout. Mid-way through this ten-track album comes a twist with an instrumental number called “Numinous.” This one is splendid with gorgeous melodic lead and outstanding backing orchestration. When I first heard this, I thought I had inadvertently started playing some Insomnium, because you get a lot of the same ambience here. In truth, there are hints of that melodic death vibe – albeit with different riffing style – throughout The Tide Of Death And Fractured Dreams. Track seven is “In Nothingness,” a fairly straight-ahead composition, mid-paced, with another guest vocal appearance, this time from Mark Hunter of northern Ohio groove-core act Chimaira. The pairing is an interesting one – not what I would have anticipated – and while there is some appeal to the versing structure, the differential created between singers didn't quite work for me. The energy gets kicked up a notch on “Pantheon” with more slam riffs and pig squeals if you are in the mood for ‘em, as well as classic breakdowns toward the end. Yet still, if you listen carefully, there's some melodic elements below the surface, and even a bit of catchiness in the versing. Nothing commercial in any sense, but definitely catchy. Equal in brutality to any other track on the album, but also with a quasi-epic metal feel to it - is “Kingdoms Of Sand.” Somewhat tech-deathy in its precision, at this point you'll have to have come to appreciate the sophistication of Hynes as a guitarist and composer. The album's closer “A Path Once Lost” spends its first few stanzas with undistorted guitar and emotive, melancholic singing from Evans. Further in we get some overlapping cleans and growls. The contrast in sound was great, but the lyrical pacing seemed off. A decent track overall, but not among the strongest in my opinion. This album is excellent, although admittedly there were a few tracks that didn't quite resonate for me. I'm giving The Tide Of Death And Fractured Dreams a strong 8 out of ten rating. You can purchase the album digitally and in a variety of physical formats through metalblade.com or wherever you buy music.

Ep. 81 - Jaakko Mäntymaa (Marianas Rest). In this episode I talk with Marianas Rest vocalist Jaakko Mäntymaa. Marianas Rest are from Kotka, Finland and formed in 2013. They play a melancholic style of death/doom metal. If you heard of bands like Swallow The Sun, Insomnium, or Omnium Gatherum you'll definitely dig Marianas Rest. Marianas Rest just released a new album entitled “Auer” via Napalm Records on March 24th. This is a great album and I highly recommend it if you like somber, melancholic doom metal. We talk about the formation of the band, their new album, and a bunch of Finnish bands Jaakko recommends. I hope everyone enjoys this episode. On this week's MetalSucks Podcast, we've got Insomnium guitarist Markus Vanhala as our guest. During our chat, we discuss how the band's latest single, “The Witch Hunter,” almost didn't make it on the new album Anno 1696. We also learn more about the short story that inspired the concept album, as well as how he felt releasing singles to the fanbase instead of a complete EP. Speaking of EPs, we got Markus to share his favorite EP's of the 90's, how the special edition of Anno 1696 comes with an exclusive EP of bonus songs, what ideas people feel would be “commercial suicide” working for the band, and his optimistic outlook on the future of the music industry. Also in the episode is a discussion between Petar and Sylvia, where they tackle the sad news that Ozzy Osbourne is retiring from touring due to his health issues, Steve-O pleading with Bam Margera in hopes of choosing recovery over death, their excitement over Jason Newsted working on new heavy music, and Dee Snider's comments on reunion tours being “lame.” Song: Insomnium - “The Witch Hunter” Song: Insomnium - “White Christ” Feat. Today we are going to be talking a brand new Swedish melodic death metal band called The Halo Effect. This is their debut album titled Days of the Lost. For those who don't know, this band is made up of all the old members of In Flames and the vocalist of Dark Tranquility. I'm going to declare this as my favorite album of the year so far and give The Halo Effect - Days of the Lost a well-deserved 10 out of 10! The first track is called "Shadow Minds" which begins with a slight buildup with a pitch harmonic note being played in the opening riff which ends up also being the main riff. Any fan of the band Dark Tranquility will appreciate the volume level of Mikael Stanne's vocals. Every musician in the group gets to shine evenly throughout the entire duration. The main calming guitar riff preformed by both Jesper Strömblad and Nicles Engelin is second to none when it comes to creating something totally memorable. The third song is called "The Needless End" which is honestly more reminiscent of Lunar Strain or The Jester Race as far as the skipping fret notes seem to flow with the guitars. They fully managed to once again capture lightening in the bottle. I even enjoy the musical pauses in this particular song. The classic stop and start trick is used hear and only the most in-sync of musicians can pull that off without it sounding corny or generic. Next up we got a song titled "Conditional" which will almost certainly remind listeners of mid-era Dark Tranquility records such as: Character, Fiction and The Gallery. I'm sure many will even find a way to make connections with Skydancer as well. "In Broken Trust" gives us our first taste of clean singing from Mikael. It sounds as though it would be a hit song if this type of music was more accepted by the general public. If only rock radio stations would play this kind of music during graveyard shirt hours. It would be a much better world. The clean singing doesn't wear out it's welcome as it is very short-lived and only serves as a course. "Gateways" is yet another stellar tune due to its groovy guitar riff. Its another defining track and gives people the verbal opportunity to describe this album as "Riffs For Days". When people say that, this is what they mean. This one starts out slow with some undistorted guitar picking and Mikael's raspy voice followed by a lovely little tune. This structure repeats but it isn't repetitious at all; in fact, the guitar solo in this is very dream like and the song closes with sort of that Insomnium kind of vibe. Then we have a song called "A Truth Worth Lying For" which will get you nodding your head with those funky bass lines performed by bassist Peter Iwers. This song is also the second time were hear Mikael's very brief clean singing which never feels out of place. I haven't heard clean singing in melodic death metal sound this good since Christian Avelstam was in Scar Symmetry. And now, my favorite song on this whole album "Feel What I Believe". I am so tempted to buy this shirt for this song but dammit, I have to save my money. Everything from the riff, to the lyrics, to the drums to the vocals makes this one arguably the best ear worm on this absolutely incredible debut. "Last Kind Words" begins slow with a very soft classical music sample before diving head first into the most headbang inducing guitar chugs while a completely different riff is being played by the other guitarist. Mikael does this shouting style of clean singing with his raspy voice digitally placed over it. The final track is "The Most Alone". As a whole, this last song doesn't stand out quite as much as the others but it certainly has my favorite miniature solo which you will hear after the halfway mark. Be sure to show your support by following them on social media and purchasing their music from Nuclear Blast Records. You can listen to them pretty much anywhere whether it be: Amazon Music, Spotify or YouTube.
