Episode 3 of On The Record once again proves that no matter how long you've worked in media, technology will always sense weakness.  Once operational, the episode quickly becomes a rallying cry for the quietly furious demographic known as Grumpy Older Men Who Have Had It With Banks. Michael officially embraces his new identity after discovering his bank changed everything without warning, while Brian counters with tales of frozen debit cards, vanished tellers, and the most devastating bank exit in history... From there, the conversation widens—considerably. There's a surprisingly heartfelt discussion about the best technology of 2025, which turns out not to be AI, crypto or anything with a subscription fee, but a lightweight laptop, a digital library card, and apps that simply work. Radical. Travel takes centre stage next, with Michael recounting a punishing but transcendent hike through Albania's Accursed Mountains, involving donkeys, snow-capped peaks, dodgy knees and a journey that somehow includes minibuses, boats and a black Mercedes. Brian counters with a pitch for Tulsa, Oklahoma—a city with no tourists, no traffic, a Bob Dylan Centre, a Woody Guthrie Centre, and an offer to pay you $10,000 to move there (family approval not guaranteed). Music eventually breaks through—this is a Rhythms podcast after all—with Christmas gift recommendations ranging from Mavis Staples and Paul Kelly to Dylan box sets, Patti Smith anniversaries, Springsteen gloom, and vinyl for hipsters aged anywhere between 30 and 60. There are also book tips, documentary detours, and a shared belief that Brad Pitt shirtless does not automatically equal a good movie. By the end, Episode 3 has covered banks, libraries, hiking, Dylan, Tulsa, laptops, Formula One, Christmas shopping and the philosophy of buying technology like a V8 Mustang—all without ever fully sticking to a plan. Which, frankly, is exactly the plan. Questions about whether anyone who tithes is not a Christian and is accursed since Paul says that if you obey one part of the Mosaic Law you're obligated to obey all of it, and the claim that tithing preceded the Law and therefore remains a principle for the church today.   Since Paul says that if you obey one part of the Law to please God you're obligated to obey all of it, does that mean that anyone who tithes is not a Christian and is accursed? How would you respond to the claim that tithing preceded the Law of Moses, as evidenced by Abraham giving a tenth to Melchizedek in Genesis 14, and therefore remains a principle for the church today?

This is the full, extended version of Accursed Philoctetes. How and why you may ask could there be a full play about a spinoff story from the Trojan War Cycle? How and why would you find this myth about a middling Greek hero whose fame/notoriety is due to the stench from an infected foot worthy of your or anyone else's attention? Philoctetes is not exactly heroic, more of a victim, and he whines alot about his mistreatment, but on the other hand he does have a point. He was treated shabbily by his Greek peers, especially when he has, in his possession, the arms of mighty Hercules. Good questions. Listen in and maybe after that, you'll understand. Or maybe not. "Creator'"s note: apologies that I did not enlist other actors in this production, but my usual suspects have gotten oldier and busier and I was reluctant to disturb. Consider this then a template should any one feel a burning desire to do this unwieldy thing justice. In the meantime, I will slink back into my cave, sans, of course, the bow of Hercules.

This is the first episode of Accursed Philoctetes, an updated myth from the Trojan War cycle. In Act I, a famous Greek archer, Philoctetes, gets bitten by a snake - sent by Hera - on the island of Lemnos as the Greek army is heading to Troy to avenge the dishonor done to one of their own. The snakebit gets infected and fetid and completely incapitates him and unsettles his fellow sailors to the point that the Greek forces must consider leaving him behind on their way to Troy. How and why does Philoctetes get singled out for this particular punishment? What does it matter to the Greeks if he were to be left behind? What are lifeboat ethics anyway? Explore the beginnings of this strange story of my Accursed / A Cursed Philoctetes. Trigger warnings: disgusting wound imagery, some noisesome howling and realistic depictions of abandonment and FOMO.There is a certain universality to his experience despite the great goddess Hera and the snake.Enjoy?

Israel hath sinned, and they have also transgressed my covenant which I commanded them: for they have even taken of the accursed thing, and have also stolen, and dissembled also, and they have put it even among their own stuff.JOS.7:12 Therefore the children of Israel could not stand before their enemies, but turned their backs before their enemies, because they were accursed: neither will I be with you any more, except ye destroy the accursed from among you.JOS.7:13 Up, sanctify the people, and say, Sanctify yourselves against to morrow: for thus saith the LORD God of Israel, There is an accursed thing in the midst of thee, O Israel: thou canst not stand before thine enemies, until ye take away the accursed thing from among you.JOS.7:14 In the morning therefore ye shall be brought according to your tribes: and it shall be, that the tribe which the LORD taketh shall come according to the families thereof; and the family which the LORD shall take shall come by households; and the household which the LORD shall take shall come man by man.JOS.7:15 And it shall be, that he that is taken with the accursed thing shall be burnt with fire, he and all that he hath: because he hath transgressed the covenant of the LORD, and because he hath wrought folly in Israel.JOS.7:16 So Joshua rose up early in the morning, and brought Israel by their tribes; and the tribe of Judah was taken:JOS.7:17 And he brought the family of Judah; and he took the family of the Zarhites: and he brought the family of the Zarhites man by man; and Zabdi was taken:JOS.7:18 And he brought his household man by man; and Achan, the son of Carmi, the son of Zabdi, the son of Zerah, of the tribe of Judah, was taken.JOS.7:19 And Joshua said unto Achan, My son, give, I pray thee, glory to the LORD God of Israel, and make confession unto him; and tell me now what thou hast done; hide it not from me.JOS.7:20 And Achan answered Joshua, and said, Indeed I have sinned against the LORD God of Israel, and thus and thus have I done:JOS.7:21 When I saw among the spoils a goodly Babylonish garment, and two hundred shekels of silver, and a wedge of gold of fifty shekels weight, then I coveted them, and took them; and, behold, they are hid in the earth in the midst of my tent, and the silver under it.JOS.7:22 So Joshua sent messengers, and they ran unto the tent; and, behold, it was hid in his tent, and the silver under it.JOS.7:23 And they took them out of the midst of the tent, and brought them unto Joshua, and unto all the children of Israel, and laid them out before the LORD.JOS.7:24 And Joshua, and all Israel with him, took Achan the son of Zerah, and the silver, and the garment, and the wedge of gold, and his sons, and his daughters, and his oxen, and his asses, and his sheep, and his tent, and all that he had: and they brought them unto the valley of Achor.JOS.7:25 And Joshua said, Why hast thou troubled us? the LORD shall trouble thee this day. And all Israel stoned him with stones, and burned them with fire, after they had stoned them with stones.JOS.7:26 And they raised over him a great heap of stones unto this day. So the LORD turned from the fierceness of his anger. The Apostle Paul was moved with such compassion for his unbelieving countrymen that he was willing to be accursed of God for the sake of their salvation. Jesus Christ had such compassion for us that he did go to the cross to be cut off from his Father and was made to be a curse for us to secure our salvation. Does his compassion for you motivate you to reach Jew and Gentile alike with his glorious gospel? To support this ministry financially, visit: https://www.oneplace.com/donate/791/29

Send us a textWhat's the meaning of life? Why is there pain and suffering? How do you balance justice and love? These "accursed questions" have haunted humanity for centuries. Fyodor Dostoevsky sought to answer these questions through his characters' lives. His answers are prophetic for our time.In this episode, I sit down with Northwestern University professor of Russian literature Gary Saul Morson. We discuss what Dostoevsky reveals about developing intellectual honesty, how to deal with suffering and brokenness, as well as his arguments for and against God. His latest book, Wonder Confronts Certainty: Russian Writers on the Timeless Questions and Why Their Answers Matter, sets the stage for this interview sets the stage for this interview.Topics:The "Accursed Questions" of Russian LiteratureDostoevsky's Intellectual Honesty with FaithBattle-Testing Worldviews through FictionThe Dangers of Abstracting IndividualsNotes from Underground: Human Freedom vs DeterminismThe Core of Ethics: Human Surprisingness"What books have had an impact on you?""What advice do you have for teenagers?Bio:Gary Saul Morson is Lawrence B. That dagger which stabbed the Savior's heart to death!Charles SpurgeonWe never know the full evil of our iniquities--until we see what it cost our precious Redeemer to put them away. The true Christian looks upon sin, as we would regard a knife rusted with gore, with which some villain had killed our mother, our wife, or our child. Could we play with it? Could we wear it as a jewel hung around our necks?Could we even endure it in our sight? No! Accursed thing, stained with the heart's blood of my beloved--I would gladly fling you into the bottomless abyss! Sin is that dagger which stabbed the Savior's heart to death! Henceforth it must be the abomination of every man who has been redeemed by the sin-atoning sacrifice of Jesus."A bleeding Savior I have viewed, And now I hate my sin!"

We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your Name. Amen. LessonsIsa. 9:18-10:4A Reading from the Book of the Prophet Isaiah. For wickedness burns like a fire;        it consumes briers and thorns;    it kindles the thickets of the forest,        and they roll upward in a column of smoke.    Through the wrath of the Lord of hosts        the land is scorched,    and the people are like fuel for the fire;        no one spares another.    They slice meat on the right, but are still hungry,        and they devour on the left, but are not satisfied;    each devours the flesh of his own arm,    Manasseh devours Ephraim, and Ephraim devours Manasseh;        together they are against Judah.    For all this his anger has not turned away,        and his hand is stretched out still.            Woe to those who decree iniquitous decrees,        and the writers who keep writing oppression,    to turn aside the needy from justice        and to rob the poor of my people of their right,    that widows may be their spoil,        and that they may make the fatherless their prey!    What will you do on the day of punishment,        in the ruin that will come from afar?    To whom will you flee for help,        and where will you leave your wealth?    Nothing remains but to crouch among the prisoners        or fall among the slain.    For all this his anger has not turned away,        and his hand is stretched out still. The Word of the Lord. Thanks Be To God. Te Deum laudamusYou are God: we praise you;You are the Lord: we acclaim you;You are the eternal Father:All creation worships you.To you all angels, all the powers of heaven, Cherubim and Seraphim, sing in endless praise:Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory. The glorious company of apostles praise you.The noble fellowship of prophets praise you.The white-robed army of martyrs praise you. Throughout the world the holy Church acclaims you;Father, of majesty unbounded, your true and only Son, worthy of all worship, and the Holy Spirit, advocate and guide. You, Christ, are the king of glory, the eternal Son of the Father. When you became man to set us free you did not shun the Virgin's womb. You overcame the sting of deathand opened the kingdom of heaven to all believers. You are seated at God's right hand in glory. We believe that you will come and be our judge.Come then, Lord, and help your people, bought with the price of your own blood, and bring us with your saintsto glory everlasting. 2 Pet. 2:10b-16A Reading from the Second Letter of Peter.and especially those who indulge in the lust of defiling passion and despise authority.  Bold and willful, they do not tremble as they blaspheme the glorious ones, whereas angels, though greater in might and power, do not pronounce a blasphemous judgment against them before the Lord. But these, like irrational animals, creatures of instinct, born to be caught and destroyed, blaspheming about matters of which they are ignorant, will also be destroyed in their destruction, suffering wrong as the wage for their wrongdoing. They count it pleasure to revel in the daytime. They are blots and blemishes, reveling in their deceptions, while they feast with you. They have eyes full of adultery, insatiable for sin. They entice unsteady souls. They have hearts trained in greed. Accursed children! Forsaking the right way, they have gone astray. They have followed the way of Balaam, the son of Beor, who loved gain from wrongdoing, but was rebuked for his own transgression; a speechless donkey spoke with human voice and restrained the prophet's madness. Matt. 3:1-12A Reading from the Gospel According to Matthew. In those days John the Baptist came preaching in the wilderness of Judea, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.” For this is he who was spoken of by the prophet Isaiah when he said,    “The voice of one crying in the wilderness:    ‘Prepare the way of the Lord;        make his paths straight.'”              Now John wore a garment of camel's hair and a leather belt around his waist, and his food was locusts and wild honey. Then Jerusalem and all Judea and all the region about the Jordan were going out to him, and they were baptized by him in the river Jordan, confessing their sins.  But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming to his baptism, he said to them, “You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the wrath to come? Bear fruit in keeping with repentance. And do not presume to say to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as our father,' for I tell you, God is able from these stones to raise up children for Abraham. Even now the axe is laid to the root of the trees. Every tree therefore that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.  “I baptize you with water for repentance, but he who is coming after me is mightier than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. His winnowing fork is in his hand, and he will clear his threshing floor and gather his wheat into the barn, but the chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire.”The Word of the Lord. Thanks Be To God. Benedictus Dominus DeusBlessed be the Lord, the God of Israel; * he has come to his people and set them free.He has raised up for us a mighty savior, * born of the house of his servant David.Through his holy prophets he promised of old, that he would save us from our enemies, * from the hands of all who hate us. He promised to show mercy to our fathers * and to remember his holy covenant. This was the oath he swore to our father Abraham, * to set us free from the hands of our enemies, Free to worship him without fear, * holy and righteous in his sight all the days of our life. You, my child, shall be called the prophet of the Most High, * for you will go before the Lord to prepare his way, To give his people knowledge of salvation * by the forgiveness of their sins.In the tender compassion of our God * the dawn from on high shall break upon us, To shine on those who dwell in darkness and the shadow of death, * and to guide our feet into the way of peace.Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit:as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen. The Apostles CreedI believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth.I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead.I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. The PrayersThe Lord be with you.And also with you.Let us pray. Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Welcome to the Beastlands, where the trees judge you, the clouds gossip, and there's a god who's just really into dinosaurs. In this week's episode of the RPGBOT.Podcast, we're diving headfirst into D&D's most feral vacation spot. We're talking everything from Beast Transformations (ever wonder what it's like to be your party's emotional support bear?) to power creep (aka: why your Fighter feels like a caveman next to the new classes). Ready to explore the Hunter's Paradise? Pack your polymorph spells and an extra can of bear spray—you're gonna need it. Summary Step into the wild and mysterious Beastlands, D&D's very own nature paradise with a twist! In this episode, the RPGBOT hosts explore one of the Outer Planes that isn't just green and beautiful—it's alive, it's hungry, and it might be slightly annoyed you're visiting. Our hosts begin with the Beastlands' unique layout, from lush forests and stunning landscapes that seem to be lifted straight out of a nature documentary to creatures you'd want to admire from way over there. They break down the gameplay impact of this vibrant world, where players might just find themselves turning into animals (ever seen a cleric turn into a duck? It's spiritual). They also dive into the 2014 Dungeon Master's Guide's Beastlands-specific rules, like the Hunter's Paradise and Beast Transformation. What does it mean for gameplay when players can tap into primal powers or even become their inner beasts? The hosts examine how these mechanics affect player strategy, survival, and the hilarious chaos that follows when everyone's suddenly sporting fur or feathers. As if that weren't enough, they get into the lore behind the inhabitants, including the Mortai—talking clouds with mysterious agendas—and Uptow, the dinosaur god who had a hand in creating Chult (because why not dinosaurs?). They go beyond just monsters, touching on the divine themes and wild escapism the Beastlands offer for players who are looking to connect with their inner animal (or just pet one). With plenty of laughs, some cheeky commentary on power creep, and a thorough look at balancing out a plane where nature and magic collide, this episode is your ticket to the Beastlands. Buckle up, roll your dice, and get ready for a chaotic adventure where even the plants might be rooting for you… or maybe just trying to eat you. Links 2024 Dungeon Master's Guide (affiliate link) RPGBOT.Podcast Episodes 2024 PLAYER'S HANDBOOK: The RPGBOT.Review Takeaways The Essence of Nature: The Beastlands embody nature's raw beauty and wildness, creating a vibrant and immersive fantasy setting. Talking Animals: Animals here have a voice, adding whimsy and depth to the experience and allowing for unexpected interactions. Layered Geography: The Beastlands' three layers each represent a different time of day, enhancing the environment's dynamic feel. Enhanced Senses: Food and drink taste extraordinarily delicious, amplifying the sensory magic of the plane. River Oceanus vs. River Styx: The River Oceanus provides a refreshing alternative to the notoriously dangerous River Styx, offering a peaceful waterway. Weather Control by Creatures: Fixed weather patterns can be influenced by local creatures, making climate part of the story. Moving Stars Challenge Navigation: Navigating by starlight is tricky here, as the stars are ever-shifting and hard to rely on. Camping Adventures: The hosts share humorous takes on the perils of camping in a plane as unpredictable as the Beastlands. Fantasy Escapism: The Beastlands reflect the importance of escapism, creating a realm that feels both enchanting and untamed. Cuddly Beastlands Vibe: The hosts express a longing for a friendlier, softer side of the Beastlands, beyond its more feral aspects. Hunter's Paradise Bonus: This feature amplifies hunting skills for all characters, blending survival with an edge of wild adventure. Beast Transformation Risks: The Beastlands' magic can lead to permanent changes, adding risk to transformation abilities. Contradictions in Hunting: The plane's nature both supports and challenges hunting, reflecting a complex relationship with the wild. Portal Access: Multiple portals allow players to reach the Beastlands, making it an accessible yet mystical destination. Animalistic Traits: Characters and creatures can gain animalistic features, adding to the plane's immersive quality. Spirits of the Wild: Deceased souls often take on animal forms here, intertwining the spirit world with nature. Uptow, the Dinosaur Deity: Uptow, associated with dinosaurs, adds an ancient, primal deity to the mix. Sentient Cloud Faces: The Mortai are mysterious, sentient faces in the clouds, offering cryptic guidance and intrigue. Labyrinth of Life: This jungle realm and the Forbidden Plateau introduce mysterious divine realms within the Beastlands. Survival and Food Complexity: Finding food in the Beastlands involves unique challenges, mirroring its wild spirit. Lack of Structures & Conflict: Permanent structures are rare, and conflicts are minimal, highlighting the untamed peace of the plane. Divine Realms Reflecting Deities: Realms like the Grove of Unicorns mirror their divine patrons, embodying the nature of the deities. Power Creep in Gameplay: The hosts discuss the dangers of “power creep” and how new character options can overshadow older classes. Enhancing without Overshadowing: New options should add excitement while respecting the value of classic character builds. Balance for Engagement: Balancing challenges in gameplay keeps adventures thrilling and accessible for all characters. Adapting Adventures: Game design must consider characters' evolving powers to maintain dynamic and engaging adventures. Peer Pressure from Powerful Subclasses: The rise of potent subclasses can create peer pressure, pushing players toward power. Prioritizing Inclusive Fun: Effective game design should foster fun for all players, regardless of their chosen character build. Maintaining Balance for Game Health: Balancing player power with challenges ensures a sustainable and enjoyable gaming environment. Old Testament: Hosea 10–14 Hosea 10–14 (Listen) 10   Israel is a luxuriant vine    that yields its fruit.  The more his fruit increased,    the more altars he built;  as his country improved,    he improved his pillars.2   Their heart is false;    now they must bear their guilt.  The LORD1 will break down their altars    and destroy their pillars. 3   For now they will say:    “We have no king,  for we do not fear the LORD;    and a king—what could he do for us?”4   They utter mere words;    with empty2 oaths they make covenants;  so judgment springs up like poisonous weeds    in the furrows of the field.5   The inhabitants of Samaria tremble    for the calf3 of Beth-aven.  Its people mourn for it, and so do its idolatrous priests—    those who rejoiced over it and over its glory—    for it has departed4 from them.6   The thing itself shall be carried to Assyria    as tribute to the great king.5  Ephraim shall be put to shame,    and Israel shall be ashamed of his idol.6 7   Samaria's king shall perish    like a twig on the face of the waters.8   The high places of Aven, the sin of Israel,    shall be destroyed.  Thorn and thistle shall grow up    on their altars,  and they shall say to the mountains, “Cover us,”    and to the hills, “Fall on us.” 9   From the days of Gibeah, you have sinned, O Israel;    there they have continued.    Shall not the war against the unjust7 overtake them in Gibeah?10   When I please, I will discipline them,    and nations shall be gathered against them    when they are bound up for their double iniquity. 11   Ephraim was a trained calf    that loved to thresh,    and I spared her fair neck;  but I will put Ephraim to the yoke;    Judah must plow;    Jacob must harrow for himself.12   Sow for yourselves righteousness;    reap steadfast love;    break up your fallow ground,  for it is the time to seek the LORD,    that he may come and rain righteousness upon you. 13   You have plowed iniquity;    you have reaped injustice;    you have eaten the fruit of lies.  Because you have trusted in your own way    and in the multitude of your warriors,14   therefore the tumult of war shall arise among your people,    and all your fortresses shall be destroyed,  as Shalman destroyed Beth-arbel on the day of battle;    mothers were dashed in pieces with their children.15   Thus it shall be done to you, O Bethel,    because of your great evil.  At dawn the king of Israel    shall be utterly cut off. The Lord's Love for Israel 11   When Israel was a child, I loved him,    and out of Egypt I called my son.2   The more they were called,    the more they went away;  they kept sacrificing to the Baals    and burning offerings to idols. 3   Yet it was I who taught Ephraim to walk;    I took them up by their arms,    but they did not know that I healed them.4   I led them with cords of kindness,8    with the bands of love,  and I became to them as one who eases the yoke on their jaws,    and I bent down to them and fed them. 5   They shall not9 return to the land of Egypt,    but Assyria shall be their king,    because they have refused to return to me.6   The sword shall rage against their cities,    consume the bars of their gates,    and devour them because of their own counsels.7   My people are bent on turning away from me,    and though they call out to the Most High,    he shall not raise them up at all. 8   How can I give you up, O Ephraim?    How can I hand you over, O Israel?  How can I make you like Admah?    How can I treat you like Zeboiim?  My heart recoils within me;    my compassion grows warm and tender.9   I will not execute my burning anger;    I will not again destroy Ephraim;  for I am God and not a man,    the Holy One in your midst,    and I will not come in wrath.10 10   They shall go after the LORD;    he will roar like a lion;  when he roars,    his children shall come trembling from the west;11   they shall come trembling like birds from Egypt,    and like doves from the land of Assyria,    and I will return them to their homes, declares the LORD.12   11 Ephraim has surrounded me with lies,    and the house of Israel with deceit,  but Judah still walks with God    and is faithful to the Holy One.12   Ephraim feeds on the wind    and pursues the east wind all day long;  they multiply falsehood and violence;    they make a covenant with Assyria,    and oil is carried to Egypt. The Lord's Indictment of Israel and Judah 2   The LORD has an indictment against Judah    and will punish Jacob according to his ways;    he will repay him according to his deeds.3   In the womb he took his brother by the heel,    and in his manhood he strove with God.4   He strove with the angel and prevailed;    he wept and sought his favor.  He met God12 at Bethel,    and there God spoke with us—5   the LORD, the God of hosts,    the LORD is his memorial name:6   “So you, by the help of your God, return,    hold fast to love and justice,    and wait continually for your God.” 7   A merchant, in whose hands are false balances,    he loves to oppress.8   Ephraim has said, “Ah, but I am rich;    I have found wealth for myself;  in all my labors they cannot find in me iniquity or sin.”9   I am the LORD your God    from the land of Egypt;  I will again make you dwell in tents,    as in the days of the appointed feast. 10   I spoke to the prophets;    it was I who multiplied visions,    and through the prophets gave parables.11   If there is iniquity in Gilead,    they shall surely come to nothing:  in Gilgal they sacrifice bulls;    their altars also are like stone heaps    on the furrows of the field.12   Jacob fled to the land of Aram;    there Israel served for a wife,    and for a wife he guarded sheep.13   By a prophet the LORD brought Israel up from Egypt,    and by a prophet he was guarded.14   Ephraim has given bitter provocation;    so his Lord will leave his bloodguilt on him    and will repay him for his disgraceful deeds. The Lord's Relentless Judgment on Israel 13   When Ephraim spoke, there was trembling;    he was exalted in Israel,    but he incurred guilt through Baal and died.2   And now they sin more and more,    and make for themselves metal images,  idols skillfully made of their silver,    all of them the work of craftsmen.  It is said of them,    “Those who offer human sacrifice kiss calves!”3   Therefore they shall be like the morning mist    or like the dew that goes early away,  like the chaff that swirls from the threshing floor    or like smoke from a window. 4   But I am the LORD your God    from the land of Egypt;  you know no God but me,    and besides me there is no savior.5   It was I who knew you in the wilderness,    in the land of drought;6   but when they had grazed,13 they became full,    they were filled, and their heart was lifted up;    therefore they forgot me.7   So I am to them like a lion;    like a leopard I will lurk beside the way.8   I will fall upon them like a bear robbed of her cubs;    I will tear open their breast,  and there I will devour them like a lion,    as a wild beast would rip them open. 9   He destroys14 you, O Israel,    for you are against me, against your helper.10   Where now is your king, to save you in all your cities?    Where are all your rulers—  those of whom you said,    “Give me a king and princes”?11   I gave you a king in my anger,    and I took him away in my wrath. 12   The iniquity of Ephraim is bound up;    his sin is kept in store.13   The pangs of childbirth come for him,    but he is an unwise son,  for at the right time he does not present himself    at the opening of the womb. 14   I shall ransom them from the power of Sheol;    I shall redeem them from Death.15  O Death, where are your plagues?    O Sheol, where is your sting?    Compassion is hidden from my eyes. 15   Though he may flourish among his brothers,    the east wind, the wind of the LORD, shall come,    rising from the wilderness,  and his fountain shall dry up;    his spring shall be parched;  it shall strip his treasury    of every precious thing.16   16 Samaria shall bear her guilt,    because she has rebelled against her God;  they shall fall by the sword;    their little ones shall be dashed in pieces,    and their pregnant women ripped open. A Plea to Return to the Lord 14   Return, O Israel, to the LORD your God,    for you have stumbled because of your iniquity.2   Take with you words    and return to the LORD;  say to him,    “Take away all iniquity;  accept what is good,    and we will pay with bulls    the vows17 of our lips.3   Assyria shall not save us;    we will not ride on horses;  and we will say no more, ‘Our God,'    to the work of our hands.  In you the orphan finds mercy.” 4   I will heal their apostasy;    I will love them freely,    for my anger has turned from them.5   I will be like the dew to Israel;    he shall blossom like the lily;    he shall take root like the trees of Lebanon;6   his shoots shall spread out;    his beauty shall be like the olive,    and his fragrance like Lebanon.7   They shall return and dwell beneath my18 shadow;    they shall flourish like the grain;  they shall blossom like the vine;    their fame shall be like the wine of Lebanon. 8   O Ephraim, what have I to do with idols?    It is I who answer and look after you.19  I am like an evergreen cypress;    from me comes your fruit. 9   Whoever is wise, let him understand these things;    whoever is discerning, let him know them;  for the ways of the LORD are right,    and the upright walk in them,    but transgressors stumble in them.
