1. As we get to better matchups here in the second round of the playoffs, eight of our Centex teams are playing teams with 10 or more wins this week. But which Centex team with a single-digit win total has the best chance to knock off a double-digit win total team? (That's China Spring at 8-3, La Vega at 7-4, Gatesville at 7-4 or Teague at 8-3.) 2. Flipping this around, we have several Centex teams still alive with double-digit win totals. Which 10-plus win team has the toughest game in round 2 and might get upset? (Your options include Belton, Whitney, Mart, Chilton, Abbott, Jonesboro, Oglesby or Iredell.) 3. We do have one team playing for a state title this week in the TCAF six-man ranks. DJ went to Methodist Children's Home this week to write a feature and gives us the inside scoop on what makes the Bulldogs and head coach Matt Rodgers tick. 4. DJ got a little giddy last week watching Teague-West, so that prompts us to ask: What's your favorite thing about high school football or football in general? Like a play, a player a tradition, a game, or what aspect of the game? -----  Music: http://www.purple-planet.com Support the show: https://wacotrib.com/sports/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

1. It's Week 10, which means we have some showdowns for district championships, not least among them Pflugerville Weiss at Midway, Madisonville at Connally and Whitney at Grandview. Let's rank those in terms of most likely to win on Friday night. Is Connally an underdog? Is Midway the biggest longshot?  2. Lorena can clinch an outright district championship on Friday after last week's epic 52-49 toppling of No. 1 Franklin last week. So let's talk about Braylon Henry: He started out 2022 at linebacker, moved to safety and picked up some accolades, but now is shining as running back with 17 TDs and several 200-yard games in his last six contests. Henry seems to be one of those guys, wherever you put him, he's going to make an impact. But which other Centex players might fit into that category?  3. DJ recently spotlighted Hispanic kickers for Hispanic Heritage Month, and a good kicker is a real luxury at the high school level — we certainly have several superlative ones around Central Texas. Who's the best kicker you've seen this season around the area?  4. Do you know who the highest-ranked team in Central Texas is? It's Methodist Home, if you go by the sixmanfootball.com rankings in TCAF. Let's give some love to Coach Matt Rodgers' Bulldogs and do-it-all star Londen Bickham, who has some eye-popping numbers.  -----  Music: http://www.purple-planet.com Support the show: https://wacotrib.com/sports/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

This is Living Stories, featuring voices from the collections of the Baylor University Institute for Oral History. I'm Kim Patterson. Over the years, Central Texans have celebrated a variety of Easter customs. Dr. Delta Hafford of De Leon managed the clothing program at the Methodist Children's Home in the 1950s and later served as school coordinator. She describes Easter at the Methodist Home in a 1977 interview: "Easter Sunday was always such an exciting time because this was the time when every little girl had a new dress and a new pair of shoes, and they were so proud to wear them on Easter Sunday. This was probably the only day of the year that everybody had a brand-new dress on the very same day. Otherwise, the clothing was renewed, you know, at specific—at—on a staggered basis over the year. But on Easter Sunday, every little girl had a brand-new dress and a brand-new pair of shoes. And that was an exciting time. And it was really a time of pride, I think, for the children. This was also coincided with homecoming day. Homecoming, at the Methodist Home, has historically been on Easter Sunday. It's a time when everyone goes to church, and they like to look nice for the homecomers, you see, and for all the guests that were on campus. So it was doubly important for all the children to have something new to wear on Easter Sunday." Dr. Adolph Basse of Fredericksburg explains an Easter tradition he took part in in the 1930s and 40s: "Every Easter they'd build huge fires, and the idea was that the Easter Bunny was cooking eggs up there. And so that was a big, big thing. All the kids in all these little hills around here, everybody got a bunch together if we had—well, first we'd build them out of wood and later on out of old tires. And then they had a pageant with it, you know. And then they'd talk about these fires, and then they'd have the Indians and the whole works there. The legend goes it all got started because the Indians used to build fires on these hills, and the mothers would tell the kids, ‘That's—the Easter Bunny's up there; he's cooking eggs.' But it was actually the Indian fires." Carol Durón grew up in Waco in the Calle Dos neighborhood. She shares memories of Easter week from the 1940s and 50s: "You prepared yourselves. Since we went to a Catholic school, we went Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday, and we didn't go Thursday, Friday. Thursday, my aunt would start with the cooking. We had capirotada. Oh, I remember my daddy—the trips to Safeway on Eighth and Washington. I mean, we—oh, we always ate so good. My aunt, I'd be watching her and helping her and, ‘Peel this. You're going to make the agua fresca.' And, mind you, all of this was done before going to church at two o'clock in the afternoon. Church was a walking distance, not far from us. And, of course, come back home, and we always enjoyed the food." Clothing, bunnies, eggs, special recipes, church services—they share the thread that runs through all Easter traditions: spring as a time of natural and spiritual renewal. 119: Managing Turnover as a Nonprofit Leader (Bert Armstrong)SUMMARYAs turnover affects every level of our nonprofit organizations, leaders are asking themselves “how do I attract and retain the talented people we need?” In episode #191 of Your Path to Nonprofit Leadership, we speak with Bert Armstrong, who has served more than three decades in the philanthropic sector, about navigating turnover. He discusses how to avoid turnover in the first place, the best approach to a search process when it's necessary, and how to better develop emerging leaders when change occurs. The teachings of his faith shaped his passion for the work and by the examples of servant leadership and generosity by people across all stations in life. Recorded by phone... turn it up a little.   What are the benefits - emotionally - for youth in a group setting from a sociological perspective in a time of crisis? Dr. Helen Avis, Coordinator of Outcomes and Education and Reverend Bruce Stanley, CEO & President of the Methodist Home for Children (MHC) discuss their response to the COVID-19 pandemic and the long history and outcomes of the MHC. Following the COVID-19 eruption of community spread in the United States, the MHC system implemented appropriate social distancing, hand-washing, cleaning and safety protocols throughout its homes and buildings. Counselors provided young residents with guidance and opportunities for talking through the these traumatic sudden changes & community closures.  The children are provided with counseling services and time with each other to talk about their questions when they arise, and no doubt, the availability of like-age peers to process this pandemic with has eased stress among the children living in these centers.  Beginning at the turn of the century, the MHC built its first home in Raleigh, North Carolina, where it is still headquartered today. Serving as home to children from the that time forward, this long standing system of care has surrounded children from infancy to adulthood with homes and supportive community outreach programs. Working with juvenile justice referrals, the MHC serves youth in multiple capacities with care plans and social work services to dovetail into their specific needs.  Dr. Avis & Rev. Stanley enumerated the many positive outcomes they have seen through these years from individuals receiving services through MHC, presenting the benefits of a team surrounding a youth in need with a sole focus of seeing each person achieve their best in the life they will leave once leaving the MHC programs. Providing youth with job training skills, help attaining housing, and follow up care has lead to decades of success stories.  For more information visit: https://www.mhfc.org

The Protection Unit: oversees our licenses for unadopted, mission trips, & trainings Pray the local churches, missionaries, and organizations in their efforts to share Christ in their communities and care for the children & families of Costa Rica Ray & Lidia Zierkel: Missionaries who run the Methodist Home and are partnering with us for adoptions & unadopted Steve & Georgiana Thomas: Missionaries who run the Abraham Project and partner with us for adoptions Marjorie & Tyler: Costa Rican believer & husband (who is now a missionary there) who run a home there and are partnering with us for adoptions and unadopted Casa Viva: This is a Christian non-profit that is running the entire foster care system for the country. They are only licensing local believer to be foster families (Praise the Lord!). We'd love to pray over them, their mission, and for the ways they are caring for over 300 children already! We are praying for unique ways to partner with them in the future, too. Pray for wisdom and opportunities for (un)adopted as we plan for future care giver and foster care trainings as well as mission trips. The Lord is doing some really big things! For their hearts, that they may learn of their Heavenly Father and that He will comfort them in their distress. For advocates to arise to love, care for, and help them. Many children spend years in care without receiving abandonment decrees due to a failed system. Let's pray the Lord raises up the right people to fight for them and help them be reunited to their families or forever adoptive families. For the specific children we met on the last trip – we met over 200 children that are waiting for forever families. Let's pray for the Lord's will in their lives and that we can be good advocates for each of them. Post Adoption Families and Adopted Children:  Pray for the families who are already home with their children as they adjust, care for, support, and seek resources for their children. Pray for wisdom, rest, and perspective for the parents. Pray for the children's hearts as they process their hurts and that they would find comfort and healing through Christ. Families in Process: we'd love to lift up each family who is waiting and working hard to be matched with their child/ children. Pray for peace & endurance, and that they'd use this time wisely to prepare their families for what's to come.
