Joining us on the show this week is author, LMFT, and professor from Naropa University, Bruce Tift! Having been in private practice since 1979, Bruce has served thousands of clients on the path toward becoming more in touch with their immediate experience in an effort to have better relationships to themselves and others. As a practitioner of Vajrayana Buddhism for over 40 years, Bruce brings a unique perspective that combines Buddhist wisdom and the best that the Western Psychotherapeutic model has to offer. He's given presentations all around the world on this material and has released a book called ‘Already Free” Buddhism Meets Psychotherapy on the Path to Liberation'. In this conversation we talk about the merger of these two distinct and oftentimes contradictory paths of working with ourselves. Through that lens, we ask the question, what are our neuroses and is there really a problem with who I am today? Join the esteemed author Bruce Tift in a cross-pollinating discussion about the interface between psychology and spirituality, the developmental and fruitional paths, or the paths of Growing Up and Waking Up respectively. Bruce discusses the importance of holding opposing, and even contradictory, views simultaneously, without any hope or desire for closure and resolution. We're all a collection of limitations, so how can we best work with these limits? What constitutes a real obstacle in this view, and how can we work with obstacles? What about the difference between “recovery practices” and “achievement practices”? The conversation turns to the distraction value of our problems, and how ego, as an arrested form of development, is invested in maintaining struggle as a way to maintain itself. Bruce then talks about anxiety and fear, and the importance of an integral approach in relating to both. Not all fear and anxiety is problematic. On the spiritual path, anxiety can lead to real growth, and fear can be a sign that you're doing something right. How about the place of shadow work, and why doesn't Bruce favor that term? How do we best work with blind spots? The practice of relationship is explored, and how we unwittingly “hire” partners, over and over, to play out unconscious processes and avoidant tendencies. How does he sustain his enthusiasm for providing therapy after decades of clinical practice? Does Buddhism need therapy – in both senses of that phrase? Is his view exhilarating or intimidating? Bruce's wide-ranging approach gives you permission to be human, and to delight in this wonderful and terrible thing we call life. See for yourself why he is one of the most sought-after therapists in the spiritual community.

Have you ever wondered how to hold the following two seemingly contradictory experiences? On the one hand, you feel in touch with the vast expanse of being. You sense that your true nature is infinite, boundless, unconditionally loving, and outside of time. And on the other hand, you know that in certain situations (usually involving other people!), you are avoidant, dismissive, reactive, and shut down, and—truth be told—you have a lot of healing and personal growth work to do. Buddhist psychotherapist Bruce Tift is a master at holding these two seemingly contradictory views, and—ready for this?—he does so “without any hope of resolution.” In this podcast, Tami Simon and Bruce Tift talk about how, in his work with clients, he skillfully embraces both the developmental view of psychotherapy and the fruitional view of Vajrayana Buddhism, the blind spots that come with each approach, and how combining them can help people avoid these pitfalls. Tune in as they discuss unconditional openness, and how it is important to be “open to being closed”; how neurosis requires disembodiment, and further, how our neurosis is fundamentally an avoidance strategy—“a substitute for experiential intensity”; our complaints about other people (especially our relationship partners) as opportunities to take responsibility for our own feelings of disturbance (instead of blaming other people for upsetting us); how to engage in “unconditional practices,” such as the practice of unconditional openness, unconditional embodiment, and unconditional kindness; and more.

Get early access to our latest psychology lectures: bit.ly/new-talks5 We all experience suffering and confusion that we intuitively know to be unnecessary. We also experience moments of openness and inherent well being. Western psychotherapy focuses on the relief which comes as we bring our young out-of-date strategies of self-care into our more current adult capacities and realities. We discover that feelings such as fear, grief, rage, and powerlessness that were in fact overwhelming to us as children can now be acknowledged and experienced as adults. Buddhism asserts that our most basic and intimate experience is that of openness – always present but usually out of our conscious experience. Rather than “what” we are experiencing, we investigate “how we are relating” to what we experience. Engaging from open awareness, we find no evidence of problems or division. We discover that we are always living in a never resolvable stream of thoughts, feelings, and sensations because we are always and only living in our immediate experience. We will probably engage most skillfully in our lives if we train ourselves to be conscious, embodied and kind to this endless display. Therapy invites us to come out of our identification with our conditioned history. Buddhism invites us to come out of any drama about a personal identity. Both approaches have benefits and limitations. Together, as an on-going dialogue, they offer a powerful potential for less unnecessary suffering and for greater freedom. -- Bruce Tift, MA, LMFT, has been in private practice since 1979, taught at Naropa University for twenty-five years, worked in a psychiatric ward and as a family therapist with social services, and has given presentations in the United States, Mexico, and Japan. In his twenties he traveled for two years by motorcycle in Europe, North Africa, and overland to India and Nepal. He has worked as a laborer, clerk, postal worker, longshoreman, painter, school bus driver, paper mill worker, miner, and truck driver. He and his wife, Reva, are now empty-nesters living in Boulder, Colorado. A practitioner of Vajrayana Buddhism for more than forty years, he had the good fortune to be a student of Chogyam Trungpa, Rinpoche, and to meet a number of realized teachers. -- Links: - Get our latest psychology lectures emailed to your inbox: http://bit.ly/new-talks5 - Check out our next event: http://theweekenduniversity.com/events/ - Bruce Tift's website: http://www.brucetift.com - Bruce Tift's books: https://amzn.to/30ijdWV

Host Jo Reed and AudioFile's Michele Cobb discuss Brandy Colbert's first nonfiction work for teens, which opens with the award-winning African American author narrating her foreword. Kristyl Dawn Tift then vividly narrates a contextual account of the 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre, a tragic event often omitted from history books. Colbert's direct, stirring writing and Tift's sensitive but straightforward narration reveal how linked events led to a complicated web of violence, explaining connections such as those between the police and the KKK. He says he's “really disappointed” that many countries struggle to provide first and second doses while rich countries like the United States are moving forward with third doses from stockpiled vaccines.Historically committed as they are, 75 doctors from a hospital in Palm Beach Gardens in South Florida walked out of their shifts to bring attention to how hard the surge has been on facilities and staff. They say 85% of ICU beds in the state are full and urged people to “ignore the nonsense and absurdities you're hearing at public meetings and recognize the value of what a vaccine will do.”No state should brag about how well they handled the pandemic. Take Oregon. It was held up as an example as it imposed some of the strictest safety measures like mask mandates for indoors and outdoors, limits on gatherings, and restaurant closures. Now the state has more people hospitalized with COVID than ever before. One Chief Medical Officer said the early success may have actually helped the Delta variant because the aggressive measures left many population pockets with no immunity. This is Coronavirus 411, the latest COVID-19 info and new hotspots… Just the facts… for August 23rd, 2021. By the time you hear this podcast, the Moderna vaccine may have full FDA approval. And that's going to likely result in many more vaccine mandates from businesses, municipalities, education facilities, venues, etc. Why? Because it removes some of the risk of successful legal challenges. The FDA has been conducting months of additional safety and efficacy data on the vaccines. Not to be forgotten amidst all the talk of vaccines are treatments. Regeneron's antibody cocktail, which has emergency use authorization from the FDA, treats symptoms in patients at high risk of developing severe symptoms. And the demand for it is going way up. In July, orders were for about 25,000 doses per week. Now it's up to 125,000 per week. It's a mix of two antibodies that bind to the spike protein of the virus, blocking it from infecting healthy cells. The Rev. Jesse Jackson, and his wife, Jacqueline, are hospitalized in Chicago and are reportedly “responding positively to treatments” for COVID-19. Jesse Jackson is 79, and his wife is 77. He has been diagnosed with Parkinson's. He had been vaccinated. If you think Mississippi has been lax in responding to the pandemic, check this out. A new order went out saying anyone infected must isolate for 10 days or face possible misdemeanor or even felony charges. A misdemeanor would get you a $500 fine, 6 months in prison or both. But since the coronavirus is life-threatening, you could be charged with a felony punishable by a fine of up to $5,000 or 5 years imprisonment, or both. If you've ever wondered why people believe in conspiracy theories, one new study says it's either from fear or for fun. The study published in the British Journal of Psychology says actively participating in a conspiracy give those who feel powerless a feeling they're taking some kind of action. Or, conspiratorial content was found to elicit “stronger entertainment appraisals and intense emotions.” Meaning conspiracies are exciting and give people a rush. In the United States cases were up 36%, deaths are up 95%, and hospitalizations are up 43% over 14 days. The 7-day average of new cases has been trending up since July 5. This is Vaccine 411, the latest coronavirus vaccine information for August 20th, 2021.The World Health Organization is making it clear it is not happy with countries like the United States moving on to third booster shots. The Africa director warned such countries “make a mockery of vaccine equity.” Less than 2% of Africa's population is fully vaccinated. In Alabama, there aren't any more available ICU beds. The state has run out. In fact there were negative 29 ICU beds available Wednesday night. State health officials say, "We've never been here before." Also, Alabama surpassed Florida as the state with the highest rate of children hospitalized with Covid after the number of kids admitted increased 333% in one week. Needing an ICU bed and being unvaccinated may be a deadly combination if you're in Texas. Doctors there have been told if ICU bed availability becomes an issue, they can consider vaccination status as part of triage. Doctors have noted unvaccinated patients are suffering worse outcomes. Meaning all other things being equal, vaccinated people are deemed more likely to survive. And there is no weekly testing alternative. Those unvaccinated by Oct. 18 risk losing their jobs. The unvaccinated have an answer for their critics. We didn't do this, you did. A new YouGov poll shows slightly more unvaccinated Americans blame vaccinated Americans for Delta's surge than blame themselves. 6% blame themselves, 7% blame the vaccinated. This is Coronavirus 411, the latest COVID-19 info and new hotspots… Just the facts… for August 19th, 2021. As expected, U.S. health officials announced booster shots of Pfizer and Moderna should be available for all U.S. adults starting next month. It is an acknowledgement that the effectiveness of the vaccines could wear off significantly in as little as eight months. Officials said those who got the single dose Johnson & Johnson vaccine will also probably need another shot, but they aren't releasing plans for that yet. Another mandate coming out of the White House yesterday; all nursing home staff will be required to be vaccinated or the facilities they work in could lose Medicare and Medicaid funding. That could also take effect as soon as next month. Hundreds of thousands of nursing home workers are not vaccinated. Why is it so important vaccine booster shots help protect against the Delta variant? Because those cases now make up more than 98.8% of COVID-19 cases in the U.S., according to the CDC. California has become the first state to require people to prove they've been vaccinated or have a negative test before they can attend any large indoor event with over 1,000 people. That could be conventions, conferences, expos, sporting events, and concerts. Event organizers will be in charge of enforcement. If you're supposed to wear a mask in Singapore, you should probably do it. Benjamin Glynn, a 40-year-old Brit living in Singapore for work, was filmed maskless on a public train. He was arrested and found guilty of that plus causing public nuisance and threatening public officials. At first, he was detained at a psychiatric hospital because he said COVID-19 was a hoax. In the United States cases were up 47%, deaths are up 97%, and hospitalizations are up 54% over 14 days. The 7-day average of new cases has been trending up since July 5. There are once again over 7 million active cases in the United States, at 7,089,424. Keeping in mind several states stopped reporting daily case numbers, the five states with the most new cases: Florida 23,335. Texas 18,434. California 13,023. Georgia 8,014. And Louisiana 6,606. This is Coronavirus 411, the latest COVID-19 info and new hotspots… Just the facts… for August 18th, 2021.Not all nations are reluctant to lock down, and New Zealand's one of them. The entire nation was put into strict lockdown for at least three days yesterday after discovery of one single case of infection. The Prime Minister said, "We've seen what happens elsewhere if we fail to get on top of it. We only get one chance.”Round three. The U.S. government is reportedly about to offer booster shots to all Americans as soon as next month. The recommendation is expected to be that booster shots are needed only eight months after the second dose of the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines. Vaccine 4 1 1 - News on the search for a Covid 19 Coronavirus Vaccine
This is Vaccine 411, the latest coronavirus vaccine information for August 17th, 2021. For the first time since February when things were pre-vaccine, the US reported more than 900,000 cases last week. Cases are on the rise in 46 states. Just yesterday the US reported 382 deaths. Australia's most populous state, New South Wales, reported its worst day of the pandemic yesterday with 478 new infections and seven deaths. Two of the dead had gotten one dose of a two-shot vaccine. The rest were unvaccinated. Australia has one of the slowest vaccine rollouts among wealthy countries. Meanwhile Japan's state of emergency has been extended through Sept. 12 as cases continue to surge. The CDC added four places to their list of the highest-risk destinations for travelers. The newcomers are Dominica, the Island of Jersey, Montenegro, and Turkey With half of America rejecting the vaccines, testing for COVID is taking on a renewed sense of importance. And scientists at the National Institutes of Health believe they've developed a new, better, cheaper, and faster way to do it. The existing way involves amplifying viral RNA to detectable levels. But the RNA has to be extracted first, which is the time-consuming part. The new way can not only directly test RNA without extraction, it also inactivates the virus, making things safer for lab personnel. The NFL's Atlanta Falcons may or may not have a conference championship to boast about this year, but they do now have the distinction of being the first team in the league to reach 100% vaccination. The team had the NFL's first in-season positive COVID test and another COVID shutdown a month after that, but they have clearly turned things around. There is, however, no trophy for this. In the United States cases were up 64%, deaths are up 113%, and hospitalizations are up 70% over 14 days. The 7-day average of new cases has been trending up since July 5. There are 6,870,886 active cases in the United States. Keeping in mind several states stopped reporting daily case numbers, the five states with the most new cases: Florida 17,216. California 9,542. Texas 7,985. Georgia 6,480. And Louisiana 4,457. The top 10 counties with the highest number of recent cases per capita according to The New York Times: Neshoba, MS. Stone, MS. Columbia, FL. Wayne, MS. Lafourche, LA. Livingston, LA. Newton, MS. Tift, GA. George, MS. And Ascension, LA. There have been at least 622,292 deaths in U.S. recorded as Covid-related. The top 3 vaccinating states by percentage of population that's been fully vaccinated: Vermont at 67%, Massachusetts at 64.7%, and Maine at 64.6%. The bottom 3 vaccinating states are Alabama at 35.4%, Mississippi at 35.8%, and Wyoming unchanged at 37.3%. The percentage of the U.S. that's been fully vaccinated is 50.7%. The director of the National Institutes of Health said the U.S. could decide in a couple of weeks to offer booster shots to Americans this fall. South Africa, Zimbabwe, Slovakia, Czech Republic, Mexico, and India have already approved the drug for use. Afghanistan has fallen to the Taliban, and while that has many implications, there are also implications related to COVID. They have reportedly already started banning the vaccine in certain regions of the country. Regional hospital employees have been warned to stop distributing it and vaccine wards are being closed. The number of children hospitalized for COVID-19 reached an all-time high in the US over the weekend according to the Department of Health and Human Services. This is Coronavirus 411, the latest COVID-19 info and new hotspots… Just the facts… for August 13th, 2021.The Department of Health and Human Services is the latest federal agency requiring employees who provide care or services for patients be vaccinated. That affects more than 25,000 clinicians, researchers, contractors, trainees, and volunteers. The Supreme Court said yes, universities can impose a vaccine mandate on students and faculty. It declined to block a mandate at Indiana University or provide emergency relief requested by some students who said the mandate violates their constitutional right to bodily integrity under the 14th Amendment.A vaccine sentiment survey by Verywell Health shows 27% of vaccinated respondents said they were previously against getting the vaccine. So the important question is, what was able to change their minds? The top reason—chosen by 40%—was the risk of COVID overtaking the risks of getting vaccinated. Other converts just needed some time to warm up to the idea. Vermont, as you hear almost every day in this podcast, has the highest vaccination rate in the country. Yet cases in the state rose 245% in the past two weeks, according to a Fortune analysis of New York Times data. That's the highest increase in the country over that period. The state is still among those with the lowest cases per capita. And, of course, the messaging on the vaccines has shifted from it will help you keep from getting infected to it will mitigate the severity of your COVID case. We have gone from anyone who thinks the virus leaked from a lab in China is a conspiratorial nutcase to it's a “likely hypothesis.” And that characterization comes from the head of the World Health Organization's investigation. Vaccine 4 1 1 - News on the search for a Covid 19 Coronavirus Vaccine
This is Vaccine 411, the latest coronavirus vaccine information for August 11th, 2021. New state level data analyzed by the American Academy of Pediatrics and the Children's Hospital Association shows cases among children are rising, with kids accounting for roughly 15% of all newly reported cases across the U.S. for the week ending August 5. Comedian Chris Rock may call it the McDonalds of vaccines, but a trial involving almost 480,000 health workers in South Africa shows the Johnson & Johnson vaccine helps prevent severe disease in those infected with the Delta variant. 71% effective against hospitalization and up to 96% effective against death, with a durability of eight months. The CDC announced late last month it'd move away from using the PCR test it designed to look for the virus that causes COVID-19. No, it's not because they don't work. This is Coronavirus 411, the latest COVID-19 info and new hotspots… Just the facts… for August 11th, 2021.New state level data analyzed by the American Academy of Pediatrics and the Children's Hospital Association shows cases among children are rising, with kids accounting for roughly 15% of all newly reported cases across the U.S. for the week ending August 5.Comedian Chris Rock may call it the McDonalds of vaccines, but a trial involving almost 480,000 health workers in South Africa shows the Johnson & Johnson vaccine helps prevent severe disease in those infected with the Delta variant. 71% effective against hospitalization and up to 96% effective against death, with a durability of eight months. The CDC announced late last month it'd move away from using the PCR test it designed to look for the virus that causes COVID-19. No, it's not because they don't work. Panelists Georg Link | Nicole Huesman | Sean Goggins Guests Tim Lehnen | Matthew Tift Sponsor SustainOSS (https://sustainoss.org/) Show Notes Today, we are lucky to have two representatives from the Drupal community. Our two guests are Tim Lehnen, CTO of the Drupal Association, and Matthew Tift, Lead Engineer at Lullabot, who has been involved in the Drupal Project since 2010. They are here today to talk about who contributes to open source and how do we understand this in the Drupal Community. We also learn the meaning behind Tim and Matthew's catchphrases, “Build a better picture of how open source gets built” and “Building a better understanding of corporate citizenship in open source.” Download this episode now to find out much more! Don't forget to subscribe for free to this podcast and share this podcast with your friends and colleagues. [00:02:13] Tim and Matthew introduce themselves and tell us what they do and how they got into the Drupal community. [00:06:18] Tim and Matthew talk about what the Drupal community is doing to really be this community that it is today. [00:13:14] Nicole wonders how Tim and Matthew go about putting a pulse on who's contributing from a non-code perspective, and if there are ways that they surface these contributors either through reports or other ways. They talk about the mechanics of what they do. [00:18:43] Tim talks about one of the key considerations of the initial design is wanting to avoid giving people too much paperwork, and Tim tells us the two catchphrases they came up. [00:20:15] Matt talks about an analysis that he did with Dries Buytaert called, “Who sponsors Drupal development?” [00:25:16] Tim talks about two points that were brought up by Matt and Nicole earlier about the value of understanding who gets paid to the work and the different roles and historically unnoticed roles in open source. [00:28:24] We learn more about what we can do with the data when we capture it really well. Tim talks about the cool data they gathered and what they did with it, and the experiment they are trying out at the Drupal Association. [00:38:43] Georg asks Tim how the issue tracker is being used and how has that collaboration shaping up there. [00:49:16] Nicole asks if Tim and Matthew if they report out on the diversity of the Drupal community and if they've seen upticks or changes. [00:52:24] Find out where you can follow Tim and Matthew and their work online. They also share advice for communities that want to adopt a system and resources or any starting points. Quotes [00:17:25] “It's organizing these different events, it's writing a blog, it's all of these different things that we do to, it's the so what who cares, it's the translating the lines of code into, you know at heart I'm a storyteller, so it's really translating these lines of code into why is that important to our broader world.” [00:19:48] “Building a better picture of how open source gets built” and “Building a better understanding of corporate citizenship in open source,” were two of our sort of like catch phrases.” [00:31:57] “So if your organization sponsors a lot of people's time you get to come up right on top of the list, you get more business and leads, you're rewarded for sponsoring your developers to work on the project, and that encourages you to do it more.” [00:38:08] “Nobody in our community wants people to feel bad, so we're trying to tweak this. We're trying to work on our algorithms, our marketplace page as a committee that could probably talk about that studying this.” [00:42:12] “So, we have our contribution recognition committee which has access to what the true weights are. We don't publish the exact numbers of those variables because gaming the system is something you have to look out for and manage and review periodically.” [00:44:48] “And I think for me, there is still the sense that you can use these data in different kinds of ways and one of them is to sort of rank people. And I think in another way, one of the more interesting views is to kind of understand the diversity of the community, to try and understand what sort of initiatives are important to organizations, and what initiatives are important to say, volunteers.” Adds (Picks) of the week [00:53:51] Georg's pick is the Nebraska Passport Program. [00:54:38] Nicole's pick is traveling to Massachusetts and Maine with her son this summer. [00:55:27] Sean's pick is a book called, The Art of Doing Science and Engineering: Learning to Learn _by Richard W. Hamming. _ [00:55:57] Tim's pick is working with his brother on building a PC Case Mod with custom water cooling, and it's NASA themed. [00:56:44] Matthew's pick is a book called, Invisible Women: Exposing Data Bias _in a World Designed for Men _by Caroline Criado Perez. Today we are talking to Jim Glass, President of Southern Regional Technical College. (SRTC). President Glass officially began his tenure as president at SRTC on July 1, 2019. Offering 130 degree, diploma, and certificate programs, SRTC was formed in 2015 from a merger of the former Moultrie Technical College and Southwest Georgia Technical College. Serving the technical education and training needs within an 11-county service region, SRTC has locations in Colquitt, Decatur, Early, Grady, Miller, Mitchell, Seminole, Thomas (main campus), Tift, Turner, and Worth counties."One of the things we will never stray from is our workforce mission," Glass says. "Whether it's a credit course in the form of a degree, diploma or certificate or even through non-credit courses that people can take through our economic development division. We have a free high school equivalency test or English as a second language from our adult education department."SRTC is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC), the same accrediting body that certifies degrees from most colleges in the Southeast, and has 28 general education core classes transferable to colleges and universities within the University System of Georgia. Moving forward with creating apprenticeship programs, Glass says, "Every single day, I have people tell me they need welders, electricians, remote tech, nurses, on and on."A win-win opportunity, SRTC's apprenticeship program gives students valuable work experience and helps businesses meet their workforce demands. Listening to business and community leaders is the focus of SRTC's new Business and Industry Round Table discussions. "One of the things I wanted to do when I became president was to make sure that our development authorities, cities, counties, and chambers knew we wanted to be their partners," Glass says. "It's so important that we maintain great relationships."Glass says the goal is to have round table discussions throughout SRTC's service area.Growth is coming to the Moultrie campus thanks to $2.3 million to plan and design a new technical and industrial building. The funds are part of the state's FY2022 budget and expand space for SRTC's high-demand program. Also, SRTC recently received a $200,000 grant from Coca-Cola Bottling United and Rural Development Partners. The grant funds the Rural Development Partners Community Investment and Coca-Cola Bottling United Scholarship and benefits SRTC's technical and industrial programs, including the popular commercial truck driving program. COVID impacted higher education throughout the past year, especially technical schools where "hand-on" teaching is critical. Like many other schools, SRTC received CARES Act Funds used to support students and improve campus facilities, including repairs and upgrades at its campuses. SRTC's fall semester starts on August 17, visit the SRTC website or call 888.205.3449 for more information.
The integration of mindfulness with psychotherapy is an important aspect of supporting people to achieve wellbeing. How we relate to the disturbances we frequently feel throughout our lives can be a significant determinant of our quality of life, and of the possibilities we perceive. As we work toward a Buddhist psychotherapy modality, we will look at the practical application of bringing together the capacity to bear witness to our moment by moment experience along with a modern understanding of the psychological patterning we carry from childhood experiences. In today’s episode, we are honored to have the opportunity to explore the blending of Buddhist theory with psychotherapeutic approaches with Bruce Tift, author of the wonderful 2011 book “Already Free.” Bruce has been blending these two traditions and teaching at Naropa University for 4 decades. Join us as we delve deep into ways to face the vulnerability of everyday emotional disturbances, and hear how to use Buddhist practices in therapy. How cool would it be to talk to some of the greatest minds from the past and get their opinions on important matters happening today? For the Institute for the Future (TIFT), Eileen Clegg designs timeline murals used to reveal patterns between society and technology which gives TIFT information to forecast the future. Jack Russo wonders if augmented human intelligence could be in the future as he and Eileen Clegg celebrate Douglas Engelbart's theory of coevolution and the idea that mapping and organizing information could solve problems all over the world.

We chatted with local thespian Richard Varty about Talk Is Free Theatre and his path to the stage. A Barrie Uncovered podcast production.
Bruce Tift has been in private practice as a psychotherapist in Boulder, Colorado since 1979. He taught at Naropa University for 24 years and was a student of Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche. With Sounds True, he has published the book Already Free: Buddhism Meets Psychotherapy on the Path of Liberation. In this episode of Insights at the Edge, Bruce and Tami Simon compare and contrast two different approaches to personal transformation: the “developmental” approach of psychotherapy and the “fruitional” approach of Buddhist practice. They discuss the blind spots inherent in each approach, as well as the ways they can be addressed. Tami and Bruce talk about the nature of neurosis and how neurotic tendencies almost always involve a sense of disembodiment. Finally, they speak on “unconditional practices,” and how unconditional kindness can transform one’s outlook on the procession of life. (70 minutes)

It’s not enough to just be the first or the largest, you have to pave the way for the next. Our featured guest today is T. Dallas Smith. Dallas is the Founder and Chief Executive Officer at T. Dallas Smith & Company. He leads all new business development initiatives. His role includes overseeing all brokerage affairs related to the company and providing chief liaison services to key clients. Dallas began his commercial real estate career in 1982 at Atlanta Air Center Realty under the guidance of Thomas W. Tift as leasing and management representative for the portfolio. In 1989, he became the first African-American broker at Cushman & Wakefield of Georgia. His affiliation with the company opened doors for many minority brokers. In 1995, he pioneered the brokerage division for H.J. Russell & Company, an African-American owned construction and management firm, where he served as VP of the Brokerage Division. Dallas led the company initiative of acquiring 40 parcels of real estate, a full city block in the intercity of Atlanta resulting in a mixture of office, retail and multifamily developments now valued at over $20 million. In 2006, with the blessing of the late Herman Russell, Dallas opened T. Dallas Smith & Company, specializing in tenant representation. T. Dallas Smith & Company has led projects across the country with metrics exceeding more than seven million square feet of commercial property leasing and acquisitions and five thousand acres of land purchases. Since its inception, the team has grown exponentially successfully leading transactions totaling over $15 billion in aggregate value. Dallas is an innovator and thought leader in the commercial real estate community and is intentional about cultivating and developing diverse talent to help shape the commercial real estate industry. Dr. Matthew Tift, Senior Drupal Developer at Lullabot, musicologist, podcast host and educator, discusses his fascinating career and passion for all things open source.
Dallas tells the story that Leonte was the catalyst for him starting T. Dallas Smith & Company. Dallas states, “He was a sophomore at Morehouse who wanted to get into commercial real estate and he had no real estate license or real estate experience. I told him to call me when he gets his license. Two months later he shows up at my door with license in hand. “Mr. Smith I have my license.” I was trying to get rid of the kid. For two weeks, I had Leonte getting my laundry, getting my dog from the kennel, getting coffee, whatever. He did it all and always with a smile and a very humble spirit. My epiphany was that his eagerness to get into this business was the same as mine was when I pursued Mr. Tift and Cushman & Wakefield. I knew I had to help this guy and so T. Dallas Smith & Company was born.” It was his tenacity and persistence after that two week hazing period that has become his Modus Operandi.

Bruce Tift has been a psychotherapist since 1979, a practitioner of Vajrayana Buddhism for more than 35 years, and has taught at Naropa University for 25 years. He is the author of the Sounds True audio learning course Already Free: Buddhism Meets Psychotherapy on the Path of Liberation. In this episode of Insights at the Edge, Tami Simon speaks with Bruce about his perspectives on therapy as informed by Buddhist insights—examining how our “neurotic organization” exists to insulate us from legitimate suffering, why much of our growth comes from acting in ways that are counter-instinctual, and what it might mean to practice psychotherapy with the view that there is no problem we actually need to solve. The Grammy-nominated songwriter from Raleigh, North Carolina reflects on her time in the studio and out on the road.
Bruce was one of THE pivotal factors in helping me marry my wife before she slammed the door shut on me. Hear that story in this episode and why it’s so common for couples to struggle. Bruce offers a powerful frame for relationship and intimacy and makes the distinction between the developmental work we need to do, and the possibility that we are “already free” in relationship. Don W. Clark Jr. - Grady County ANR AgentThere is a relatively new pest that has had a major impact on Bermudagrass hay production in South Georgia and North Florida. The Bermuda grass stem maggot, native to Southeast Asia was found in Tift, Pierce, and Jeff Davis counties in 2010. I found it in Grady County in 2011, it was also found in many South Georgia and North Florida Counties in 2011 and 2012 as well. If your Bermuda grass hay field looks like it has been damaged by frost in the middle of the growing season, you are probably experiencing damage from this insect. The larval (maggot) stage of the BSM is what is causing the damage. This maggot is inside the stem when the damage is done. The adult fly lays its eggs on the Bermuda grass pseudostme (folded leaf blades). Upon hatching, the larva works its way toward a node, where the leaf blade emerges from the stem. As the larva develops, it feeds on the node. This feeding results in the browning of the last one to three leaf blades. In 2011 and 2012 I consulted with Dr. Dennis Hancock and Dr. Will Hudson for the purpose of setting up a test in an effort to find a control strategy. Some observations we made were that BSM was much more common on small stem varieties like Alicia than large stem varieties like Tifton 85 and Coastcross. Also we needed to control the adult fly because the maggot would be difficult to control protected by the stem. I set up several tests in 2011 and 2012 in an effort to find an acceptable control strategy. We used low rates of several pyrethroid’s and three different spray schedules. My three growers used different spray schedules as follows:A. Treated behind the baler (3 days after cutting) and again 7 days later.B. Treated 7 days after cutting and again 7 days later.C. Treated 5 days after cutting and again 10 days later. All three of my hay producer’s experienced similar control. Dr. Hancock, Dr. Hudson, and two graduate students are also continuing to work on control strategies for this pest. Hopefully we will have more information on control of this pest very soon. For more information check out this factsheet: Biology and Management of Bermudagrass Stem Maggot.
