"The planet is fine. The people are fucked." - George CarlinJoseph Iredell and Ken Jordan are the creators and hosts of the "Selling The Dream" podcast are back on the show today and we're hitting some pretty poignant topics on this go around. Joseph, Ken, and Jay are diving into why working as hard as you possibly can is a worthwhile endeavor, the power dynamic that Jeffery Epstein created through nefarious practices, and the responsibility of individual liberty and the choices we make based around our values. We aren't running from hot-button topics on this episode of The Culture Matters Podcast.
Great defense is just fun to watch, so of the seven Centex teams we have left in the playoffs — La Vega, Marlin, Hamilton, Axtell, Bremond, Abbott and Oglesby — who are some of your favorite guys to watch? The Hamilton Bulldogs face the Axtell Longhorns in an enticing Friday-night matchup this week in the region final. These two teams met in the playoffs two years ago with a 35-21 Bulldogs win, and undefeated Hamilton is now having its best season in school history, while Axtell is no slouch with a 12-1 record. So who do you like in the "red dead redemption" matchup? Our local six-man teams are just one game away from Jerryworld, with Abbott and Oglesby both playing for a trip to state. Who do you think is most likely to get there, the Panthers or the Tigers, and could we go two-for-two?Let's give some eulogies to the dearly departed on Thanksgiving week: Gatesville, Live Oak, Aquilla, Jonesboro, Iredell and Valor Prep. Which of those talented third-round teams will you remember most this season? ----- Music: https://purple-planet.com Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

But which unranked team do you think is likely to go deepest in the playoffs?3. Is there any district out there that's any more wide open than 13-2A D-I — Marlin, Crawford, Rosebud-Lott, Riesel, Bruceville-Eddy and Moody? Who's the favorite there, if anybody?4. "Out of every 100 men, 10 shouldn't even be there. 80 are just targets. Nine are the real fighters and we are lucky to have them, for they make the battle. Republican presidential hopeful Nikki Haley is holding a campaign rally in Charlotte on Friday, ahead of the North Carolina primary election on Super Tuesday. The event will be held at Suffolk Punch in South End on Friday. Haley's visit comes one day after President Joe Biden and GOP leader Donald Trump visited the southern border in Texas. Many political experts say Biden's immigration policy could be a huge hurdle for him to clear in November but there are still questions about how Trump would handle the border after his failed wall during his first term. 1. It is Turkey Week, and let us give thanks because we have some tasty matchups. Every Central Texas team out there has a 9-3 record — all in the same gravy boat. So which of these Round 3 face-offs has the potential to produce the best game? Lorena-Columbus, Whitney-Winnsboro or Chilton-Granger? 2. There's one all-Centex matchup on the slate, with Oglesby vs. Iredell in the regional final in six-man 1A Div. II. Who would you take in this fight of Tigers and Dragons? 3. We have a real shot at three all-Centex matchups next week in the state quarterfinals (and semifinals in six-man): a Lorena-Franklin rematch, a Bremond-Chilton rematch or a slugfest in Jonesboro-Abbott. Which of those is most likely to happen, and which would you most like to see? 4. Let's pour one out for China Spring: The Cougars' 13-game win streak ends at the hands of Anna to thwart the title 3-peat. Let's reflect on how impressive this run has been, and do you feel like the Cougars will still be one of those elite Class 4A programs going forward? ----- Music: http://www.purple-planet.com Support the show: https://wacotrib.com/sports/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
1. As we get to better matchups here in the second round of the playoffs, eight of our Centex teams are playing teams with 10 or more wins this week. But which Centex team with a single-digit win total has the best chance to knock off a double-digit win total team? (That's China Spring at 8-3, La Vega at 7-4, Gatesville at 7-4 or Teague at 8-3.) 2. Flipping this around, we have several Centex teams still alive with double-digit win totals. Which 10-plus win team has the toughest game in round 2 and might get upset? (Your options include Belton, Whitney, Mart, Chilton, Abbott, Jonesboro, Oglesby or Iredell.) 3. We do have one team playing for a state title this week in the TCAF six-man ranks. DJ went to Methodist Children's Home this week to write a feature and gives us the inside scoop on what makes the Bulldogs and head coach Matt Rodgers tick. 4. DJ got a little giddy last week watching Teague-West, so that prompts us to ask: What's your favorite thing about high school football or football in general? This week, we have a story that was sent to us by a member of the Appalachian Paranormal Facebook group. It's of a possible Mothman sighting that he had back in October 2022.It started in July 2022 when we went up to the West Virginia state prison for a reptile show. We were maybe 2 hours away from Point Pleasant and thought it would only add an hour onto the drive back home so we figured we would drop by. On the drive I started to get a headache. I thought it was maybe because I was tired but the closer we got the worse it got. As soon as we got through the floodgates of the town I had a feeling in my stomach like going down the first drop on a roller coaster.Eventually I felt better but fast forward a few months I was walking to work early one morning one morning right before Halloween. It was still dark around 6:00 AM when I saw red circles in a tree and felt a feeling of dread. I thought maybe it was some Halloween decorations, but I checked the next day on my way to work and there were no red lights there. They haven't been there since. Then about a month after my dad passed so maybe it was or wasn't just a coincidence, but a warning. Thank you for sending in this story. We're really sorry to hear about your father. You have our condolences. That's a pretty crazy chain of events that happened. As you all know I've been to Point Pleasant many times, I've never felt anything going there. It actually feels normal to me to be there. Maybe the person you're sensitive to these types of things? Then there were the red eyes coming from up in a tree. That's a bit spooky, I guess it could have been an owl or a racoon? But that doesn't explain the feeling of dread. Then a month later there was the passing of their father. Maybe it was an omen as some say? Remember if you have had a paranormal experience and would like to see it featured on this site be sure to send it into webmaster@spookyappalachia.com! And if you'd like to connect with others who have had similar experiences, be sure to check out the Appalachian Paranormal Facebook group. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

While we may have had a tough time pronouncing things correctly, this week's guests said all the right things when it comes to being a leader within their organizations. Laura Toledo, Communications and Marketing Manager at Nilan Johnson Lewis PA in Minneapolis, and Kevin Iredell, Chief Marketing Officer at Lowenstein Sandler LLP in New York, discuss their year-long experience in the SmithBucklin Leadership Institute. Both are leaders within the Legal Marketing Association, which sponsored their attendance at the institute. While people in leadership positions may feel that they need to have all the answers, Toledo says that she learned it is okay to be patient and learn more about the situation before just going with her gut reaction. Iredell stressed that the key to being a great leader is making sure that you've given those who report to you all the tools and support they need in order to succeed. The Institute brings together leaders from different industries and helped both of our guests understand that the legal industry does not have a monopoly on stressful situations and the need for solid leadership. Information Inspirations Greg points to a recent TED talk article from Tomas Chamorro-Premuzic called “Why do so many incompetent men become leaders? And what can we do about it?” The article and video are about as harsh as the title implies. While Chamorrow-Premuzic takes liberties at the expense of men, pointing out that the traits of bad leaders skew toward men, the traits of a good leader do not have a gender bias. We have a tendency to value confidence over competence, narcissism over humility, and the belief that leaders can do anything rather than know their limitations. This inspiration dovetails nicely with our guests today. Marlene's inspiration came from Jean O'Grady's reporting on the Law Street Media's relaunch of its legal news platform, beginning with high tech and intellectual property news. For those of us wanting a little more competition with Law360 and other legal new providers, this offering from Fastcase may be exactly what we've been looking for. Greg's final inspiration is more of a request for certain media outlets. In the past month, there have been articles where the images placed on the article do not fit the content of the article. While the intent of the images may have been innocent or just unaware, the results are misogynistic and racist. Imaging matters, especially in an age where many people do little more than skim the titles and images of an article. Hopefully, this will inspire the publisher to make a more concerted effort to use more appropriate imagery for their articles. Marlene's discusses Cambridge Analytica whistleblower, Brittany Kaiser, who sat down with Kai Ryssdal and Molly Wood on Make Me Smart, and discusses how we may be in a worse place than we were in 2016. (Cue the dark place music.) Listen, Subscribe, Comment Please take the time to rate and review us on Apple Podcast. As always, the great music you hear on the podcast is from Jerry David DeCicca.

The Convention commits a basic drafting error (probably). Georgia fails to pay some debts, Virginia claims some land, and Massachusetts grabs some property. The Committee of Detail drafts Article III. This week Dr. Boen Nutting joined us to discuss what is going on in the Iredell/Statesville school system, and what parents can expect for future initiatives in our school system. Boen began her career as an elementary school teacher and worked her way up to Principal once her children began Middle School. Through their Middle school years, she stay with her children until she was swept away by the school superintendent's office to be the internal and external communications director; a role that she still holds today. We are very encouraged to hear about the steps that are being taken to further protect and provide support to students that may be experiencing emotional stress which has lead to a rise in suicide amongst the youth in America. Through the hashtag #talkitout Boen and the Iredell county school district are encouraging children to talk about their issues with teachers rather than holding in their emotions. Amongst other things, we also learn about Boen's recent trip to the White House where she met with government officials to discuss an initiative to get mentally and physically handicapped children more active. It was very comforting to have Boen on the podcast knowing that the state of our public education system in Iredell county is in good hands and we can expect great things in store for our children for years to come. Enjoy the podcast!
