When Skybound announced M.A.S.K. would be joining the Energon Universe, fans immediately had questions. How would Matt Trakker and Miles Mayhem fit alongside Transformers, G.I. Joe, and Void Rivals? Out this week, we sat down with writer Dan Watters and artist Pye Parr to discuss updating the classic property, designing its iconic vehicles, and why M.A.S.K. offers a unique perspective within the larger Energon Universe. We're running the full uncut interview, featuring even more discussion on cool cars, character dynamics, action sequences, and what readers can expect from the series moving forward. Plus, we recap the biggest comics news of the week, share our favorite new releases, and much more. Joe, Transformers, and its own thing. What aspects of the original property were most important to preserve, and where did you see opportunities to reinvent it for the Energon Universe? Matt Trakker's introduction is fascinating because he's being hunted by the military, yet it quickly becomes clear he wants to be captured. Why was that the right way to introduce him, and what does it reveal about who he is in this version of M.A.S.K.? Miles Mayhem comes across as both calculating and completely unhinged. His fear of Transformers and extraterrestrial threats gives him a very different motivation than a typical villain. What interested you about making him someone who might see himself as humanity's last line of defense? One of the most exciting ideas in M.A.S.K. has always been vehicles transforming into weapons and armor systems. Pye, what was the challenge of updating those iconic transformations for modern audiences while still capturing the toyetic fun fans expect? Dan, after writing Destro, what was appealing about tackling another corner of the Energon Universe? Did your experience with Destro help shape how you approached M.A.S.K., or did you want this book to have a completely different flavor? The first issue hints at a larger arms race involving technology and weapons that may not even originate on Earth. How much of M.A.S.K. is a spy thriller versus a science-fiction story, and where does it fit tonally alongside Transformers, G.I. Joe, and Void Rivals? Bruce Sato and Gloria Baker are positioned as key new recruits. What qualities do they bring to M.A.S.K. that complement or challenge Matt Trakker's leadership style? The original M.A.S.K. comic debuted in 1987 and had a very different view of global threats and military organizations. Were there any specific elements from that era that you deliberately updated to reflect modern anxieties and geopolitics? Fun question: If you could each claim one M.A.S.K. vehicle and mask from the entire franchise to use in real life for a week, which would you pick and what completely irresponsible thing would you do with it?

Its MASK Monday and another round of slightly awful situations of end stage capitalism with Miles Mayhem. What's up, dudes? It's Mardi Gras, so we're celebrating with a special episode of M.A.S.K. "Mardi Gras Mystery!" Oh, and there's a Christmas comic we're talking about too. Nicholas Pepin of Pop Culture Roulette joins me to dig into the Mobile Armored Strike Kommand UK comic Christmas issue and Fat Tuesday episode! In "Christmas Kidnap," Matt Trakker takes his son and robot sidekick T-Bob to a toy store in London. Scott visits Santa, and gets kidnapped by Miles Mayhem who was masquerading (no pun intended) as Father Christmas. Consequently, T-Bob has to rescue Scott. Luckily, he does, and V.E.N.O.M. ends up buried under Christmas decorations. In "Mardi Gras Mystery," once again Matt, Scott, and T-Bob are on a mission, this time in New Orleans. V.E.N.O.M. is looking for a super fuel resource, and M.A.S.K. has to stop them. Of course, shenanigans ensue. Undercover ops are blown, vehicles can't transform, and kids fall into quicksand. In the end, Scott pours super fuel residue into the baddies' fuel tanks. Masks? Check. Vehicles? Got 'em. Disguises? Well, if you like Groucho Marx glasses. so put on your mask, drive to New Orleans, and celebrate Mardi Gras (and Christmas) to this episode on M.A.S.K. "Mardi Gras Mystery!" Oh man, Evan actually texted Ed to apologize for this stinker, and it is from Flint Dille and ,friend of the show, Buzz Dixon, who we love! Who is this knock off Kraven that looks like Miles Mayhem's long lost brother? What ever happened to Dinsmore? Did Blitzwing just make the show PG after getting covered in boogers? In this episode of SMB we breakdown Season 1, Episode 21 of M.A.S.K from 1985. The Buffoons discover they really don't like M.A.S.K. and reference Hard Target, Batman & Night Court. Mardi Gras Mystery Synopsis: Out in the New Orleans Bayou, Jacques Lancaster has been using sap from the fire trees as a powerful but volatile fuel. Miles Mayhem wants to use it to power V.E.N.O.M.'s vehicles (IMDb). --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app
Just like most of the world's population I'm hopelessly addicted to my smartphone, whether it be used to avoid talking to my family by playing a pointless grindy mobile game or to earn a small fortune by selling my exclusive Only Fans vegetable videos. But all talk of iPhones and Androids is off the table this week as we look back at the Top 5 Telephones in movies. If you're a fan of the corded landline telephone like we are you'll enjoy reminiscing about those cabled beauties as they graced the celluloid screen, and for the more enthusiastic nomophobes amongst you, you'll delight in Dan revealing the embarrassing technical mistakes some movies have made. With Peter's incredible telephone facts backing all that up, we're really spoiling you this week! Something that spoils were you to leave it for a long time in a particularly hot or cold place, or indeed just for a long time in a fairly mild environment, would be a tangerine. And that segues very nicely into this week's main feature which is Sean Baker's 2015 comedy drama TANGERINE. It's Christmas Eve and recently released from jail transgender sex worker Sin-Dee Rella (Kitana Kiki Rodriguez) discovers her boyfriend and pimp Chester (Ziggy from THE WIRE) has cheated on her, and to make matters worse it was with a "fish". With her best friend Alexandra (Mya Taylor) alongside her she sets out to track down and confront her unfaithful love, whilst Armenian cab driver Razmik (Karren Karagulian) just wants to find a connection among the streetwalkers of Santa Monica boulevard. Ironically given our top 5 this week this movie was short entirely using three iPhone 5's. That's not really irony, more of a coincidence to be honest but the movie is much more than an iPhone gimmick, and its colour saturated palette bathes and reveals a side to Los Angeles and life that is rarely illuminated. There aren't many movies featuring transgender actors that have made an impression on mainstream cinema, this could and should be one. We finish off this week's episode with a look back at M.A.S.K. because why not. The nostalgia is strong with this one, with 3 of us being huge fans of the toys. But did you know the rich and shocking back story behind Miles Mayhem and Matt Tracker's rivalry, involving the death of the latter's brother, Andy? Did you think that T-Bob was just a poor composite of R2-D2 and C-3PO, combining the worst aspects of both of those characters? Has this aged well is the big, big question? Well, you'll just have to tune in to find out. We love to hear from our listeners! By which I mean we tolerate it. It's vehicles that change into robots vs vehicles that turn into weapons and other vehicles... Our 80's toys take a multi-form turn As we Talk Matt Trakker and Optimus Prime, Megatron and Miles Mayhem. Look you probably already know who wins this one, but we are going to talk about MASK for 30 minutes anyway.
The guys keep on trucking given the extended holiday weekend, but of course not without a tangent or two. Miles recalls his Myspace days when posed with a choice for a catchy disc jockey name and Skyler's dogs can be heard as the first guests on the show, no matter how much background music the producer tries to cover it up with. Finally these two buds take a crack at ranking QB's (12:43), RB's (23:16), WR's (36:53), & TE's (58:49) while they try to reach a consensus on who the real Beasts of the NFC East are. Is this really the best division in football? Do Skyler's dogs ever shut up? Will Miles stop "cussing" like a 5 year old? Will this didactic duo make it to another episode?
