New Year's always has us looking inward, hoping for a fresh start. Creating resolutions, however, causes too much pressure, so we prefer to announce our intentions and free ourselves from potential regret if/when we don't achieve them. Helping us through the yearly reboot process in 2025 are Chip Zdarsky and David Brothers, whose new DSTLRYcomic Time Waits, done in collaboration with artists Marcus To and Marvin Sianipar, colorist Matt Wilson, letterer Ariana Maher, and editor Allison O'Toole, is the perfect excuse to contemplate our past, present, and future. The comic centers on Blue, who only wishes to tend his garden, love his wife Grace, and finally adopt Duke as his son. Unfortunately, Blue is a man out of time, and the future he came from is desperate to reclaim him and the items he stole. Time Waits delivers on John Wick levels of action and Primer levels of paradox paranoia without skipping heaps of human relationship drama. Chip Zdarsky and David Brothers are one half of the Mangasplaining podcast team, and we are delighted to discuss how their online comics discussions have shaped their comics-making process. Given the time of year that this episode arrives in, we found ourselves being even more introspective than usual, and Zdarsky and Brothers were more than happy to follow us into such philosophical quandaries. The first two issues of Time Waits are now available from DSTLRY, while the third and final issue will arrive in comic book shops on 1/22. Also, make sure you're following them online by subscribing to Mangasplaining. The nature of the shifting comic book news cycle means readers often see covers, know plots, teams, creators, and more sometimes as much as six months in advance of release, leaving readers in holding patterns where the nature of what's out now vs what's coming next can become confusing. At other times, the announcements can aggressively infringe on the validity of what's coming out at the time. Nico, TK, & Kevo take a look at the current and future states of Marvel like Fall of X vs Fall of House of X, Avengers by McKay vs Avengers: Twilight by Zdarsky, and J. Hick's Ultimate Invasion vs J. Hick's Ultimate Spider-Man! X Is For Show is your premiere place for web content where we discuss your favorite media, from comics to film & television to gaming and beyond! You can find the Action Pack here every week, so be sure to tune in and join us for all the fun.

Chris, Ian and Murd have comics to talk about, so let's do the Comic Talk again! Within, topics discussed include Joe Quesada leaving Marvel Comics, the first two episodes of Obi Wan and Season Four Part 1 of Stranger Things (spoiler free), Chris gives us a Kurt Busiek twofer on Astro City: This Was Then... and Arrowsmith Behind Enemy Lines, then a Batman duo with Chip Zdarsky's Batman: The Knight and Tom King's Batman: Killing Time. Ian gets further into Dark Crisis with Justice League: Road to Dark Crisis and the FCBD Dark Crisis issue, then gives his thoughts on issues 1 and 2 of Zeb Wells' and John Romita Jr's Amazing Spider-Man and Zdarsky's The All-Nighter, with some Patsy Walker 1955 thrown in for good measure. Then, Murd hops in the Bubble for Decades: Marvel In The '50S - Captain America Strikes! in honor of Memorial Day, and Dean Haspiel's The Red Hook in honor of...Brooklyn. Plus Muddle the Murd, and more! (1:45:54)
Artist Jason Loo wanted to make a vampire comic and get away from superheroes. Chip Zdarsky said, "Sure, but what if the vampires were hiding in plain sight as superheroes? And what if...uh...a whole bunch of other weird stuff was involved?" The All-Nighter from ComiXology Originals is a wild comic where every issue drops another bomb that is somehow wilder than the last. This week, Jason Loo and Chip Zdarsky join us in the Love Nest to explain why hats upon hats are a good thing, no matter what Matt Fraction says. Zdarsky and Loo discuss their latest collaboration, detailing how their vampire story swerved into something with stranger moral implications. Bloodlust, immortality, and fandom can be problematic, but um, that third hat...and the fourth hat these two creators plopped on top, oh boy, the implications suggested by The All-Nighter are beyond catastrophic. And we love them. Paired with our recent conversation with Christian Ward about Blood Stained Teeth, our chat with Chip Zdarsky and Jason Loo truly exemplifies why the vampire sub-genre maintains its bite. The undead always have more to give of themselves. You can still technically find Chip Zdarsky on Twitter and Instagram, but if you're looking for some proper interaction, consider joining his Substack. For the cost of two coffees a month, he will accept your praise or vile. He also has a nifty website. Jason Loo can be found on Twitter and Instagram, but his TikTok is really where it's at these days. Get on it asap. Most importantly, go grab The All-Nighter trade paperback from Dark Horse Comics, and download issue #6 from ComiXology. And, of course, follow Comic Book Couples Counseling on Facebook, on Instagram, and on Twitter @CBCCPodcast, and you can follow hosts Brad Gullickson @MouthDork & Lisa Gullickson @sidewalksiren.
