Episode Summary:This week, Peter and Eden dive headfirst into the high-octane world of Daniel Warren Johnson's Transformers comic run, exploring its explosive art, emotional beats, and G1 nostalgia. Along the way, they unpack the pains of modern TV consumption, vent about doomed adaptations, and gush over goth rock albums and short-form sci-fi. It's a heartfelt mix of media love, mild despair, and giant robots punching each other in the face—with feeling.Show Notes:Peter kicks things off with a July 4th check-in and a quick rundown of what he's been reading and listening to, including Atomic Habits and the debut album by High Parasite, a side project involving My Dying Bride's Aaron Stainthorpe.Murderbot adaptation on Apple TV+ gets a thoughtful breakdown: Peter shares his appreciation for its tone, visuals, and how closely it mirrors Martha Wells' novella All Systems Red, especially its deadpan view of humanity and delightful Sanctuary Moon cutaways.Discussion veers into TV trust issues—how shows like Paper Girls and Wheel of Time were abandoned too early by streamers like Amazon and Netflix, and why Apple TV+'s longer-term faith in its properties (Slow Horses) earns praise.Eden questions the fractured nature of modern TV popularity, riffing on Yellowstone's massive reach despite their total ignorance of anyone watching it.A segment on Eden's short-lived journey into the glitchy, chaotic world of gacha game Re Memento: White Shadow, complete with mistranslations and catastrophic layoffs.Peter shares exciting news about planning a trip to Japan for his 27th wedding anniversary—and the hurdles of learning Japanese through Duolingo. For our main topic, we dive into the first arc of Daniel Warren Johnson's Transformers comic:Eden provides background on the series and its creative team, praising Johnson's gritty, wrestling-inspired action sequences and nuanced character work.Peter offers perspective as a lifelong fan reconnecting with the property, reflecting on the emotional impact of Optimus Prime, especially how the comic echoes the trauma of Transformers: The Movie (1986).Highlights include gruesome Starscream moments, human character development (especially Sparky's sacrifice), and Optimus wielding Megatron's blaster arm. Both hosts discuss the comic's balance between fresh storytelling and homage to classic G1 design and lore.Closing thoughts touch on the excitement (and dread) around Robert Kirkman taking over the series soon, and how this arc was a rewarding, if nostalgia-heavy, entry point for fans old and new.

This week on the Toy Power Podcast; we recap our attendance at the Adelaide Mega Toy Fair event. This annual event promotes itself for its long running campaign; but with new organisers this year, how did it actually go? We chat towards what we spotted, what we think needs to be improved & what we scored!! Spoiler alert: Pub Lunch & making a day of it with great friends, is always the overall highlight!! Then Trent does an awesome Toyline Retrospective on the early 80's franchise that was: Blackstar! With a Filmation Cartoon airing first in 1981; then a corresponding Toyline from Galoob in 1983! Featuring the fight between our Hero: John Blackstar against the Evil Ruler: Overlord on the Planet Sagar. This Toyline & franchise actually has more ties to Masters Of The Universe than one may think.... There are some EPIC Beasts, questionable modes of transport & the incredibly sort after Ice Castle Playset - this Franchise really tried hard & its interesting to think in a sliding doors parallel reality - could this have been a more popular franchise than Masters Of The Universe?! Ok well Studio Series Megatron was revealed gotta talk about that i guess. Oh and other things happened as well.
Is Cliffjumper ok? No. Is it funny that he becomes utterly convinced Mirage is a traitor because he missed one report? Yes. This week we're talking about a couple of fairly iconic episodes. 'Traitor' gave G1 Mirage a bit of ambiguous loyalty that future versions of the character would love to tease, but never fully develop. Meanwhile 'The Immobilizer' is the first of many 'Wheeljack's invention nearly kills everyone' episodes, if you don't count the Dinobots. The following topics are discussed within the following datatrack transmission; killer Among Us strats, Megatron's continually deteriorating plans, Rumble's tiny baby hands, Carly's undying thirst for robots, Wheeljack inventing the Torment Nexus, and why the Decepticons keep the Insecticons around. In this Reel Insights episode, Sean Tajipour, the Mayor of Nerdtropolis, chats with Rory McCann to talk all things Tornado, Star Wars: Ahsoka, Transformers: EarthSpark, and Knuckles.Rory opens up about reuniting with director John Maclean for Tornado, a bold and quiet samurai-meets-Scotland period mash-up that stunned him with its originality. He shares why he didn't even need a script to say yes, and what makes this unexpected film a must-watch.The conversation turns galactic as Rory reflects on the enormous responsibility of taking over the role of Baylan Skoll in Star Wars: Ahsoka, a part originally played by the late Ray Stevenson. With powerful reverence and real excitement, Rory reveals what it's like to be welcomed into one of the biggest universes in the world.Plus, Rory nerds out about becoming Megatron in Transformers: EarthSpark, and shares how voicing the iconic villain was both wild and strangely relaxing. And we get a taste of what's to come in Knuckles, the Sonic spinoff where Rory continues to cement his place as a genre franchise legend.Get ready for a fun, heartfelt, and geek-worthy conversation full of surprises, laughs, and fandom love. Dan from Pod of Greed joins us to talk about two more helpings of good ol' G1 insanity. The Decepticons take over New York by building a city underneath it, and dismember Optimus in some highly confusing ways in order to help their dastardly plan along. Then, using extremely vague technology, Megatron turns a bunch of Autobots into huge jerks, and only the usage of different extremely vague technology can save them. Contained within this datatrack are discussions of the following; Reagan-era TV laws, sewer gators, skyscrapers with STDs, robogore, surgically applied lightsabers, questions about what Bluestreak's deal even is, and ill advised sound system technology. It's a bittersweet symphony as the Mikes arrive at the first half of the Transformers Animated series finale, "Endgame, Part I." A flashback-heavy tale unfolds, setting up the origins of the Autobot team we know and love--the trial of Optimus Prime, the final commission of Ratchet, the friendship of Bee and Bulk, and the fate of Prowl. In the present, Optimus earns his wings (and maybe hammer) while Megatron reveals his big plan (no, bigger) from the darkest reaches of the moon. But don't worry, we're putting some serious mileage between us and the end of the road. This week on the Toy Power Podcast; we shine light on quite an old property; that is The Shadow! From its origins in Pulp Comic Format to the Hollywood Film in 1994 staring Alec Baldwin. That Film was classified big enough to spawn a corresponding Toyline from Kenner. Trent unpacks what was great, and what was left in the dark, around this neat property. Then we switch gears, and have a FULL-ON Spoiler lead discussion around the new Marvel Film that is: Thunderbolts - or New Avengers?!? We run though how each character played their part; the tone of the film & what we all overall thought of it too. Keen to hear from your thoughts on this Film too!Support the show: http://patreon.com/toypowerpodcastSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
