When Skybound announced M.A.S.K. would be joining the Energon Universe, fans immediately had questions. How would Matt Trakker and Miles Mayhem fit alongside Transformers, G.I. Joe, and Void Rivals? Out this week, we sat down with writer Dan Watters and artist Pye Parr to discuss updating the classic property, designing its iconic vehicles, and why M.A.S.K. offers a unique perspective within the larger Energon Universe. We're running the full uncut interview, featuring even more discussion on cool cars, character dynamics, action sequences, and what readers can expect from the series moving forward. Plus, we recap the biggest comics news of the week, share our favorite new releases, and much more. Dave: X-Men United #4 (Kris Anka Cover) Chris: Spectacular Spider-Man: Brand New Day #2 (Phil Jimenez and Alex Sinclair Main) Dan Watters Pye Parr - MASK #1 out June 10th M.A.S.K. has always had a unique place in Hasbro history, sitting somewhere between G.I. Joe, Transformers, and its own thing. What aspects of the original property were most important to preserve, and where did you see opportunities to reinvent it for the Energon Universe? Matt Trakker's introduction is fascinating because he's being hunted by the military, yet it quickly becomes clear he wants to be captured. Why was that the right way to introduce him, and what does it reveal about who he is in this version of M.A.S.K.? Miles Mayhem comes across as both calculating and completely unhinged. His fear of Transformers and extraterrestrial threats gives him a very different motivation than a typical villain. What interested you about making him someone who might see himself as humanity's last line of defense? One of the most exciting ideas in M.A.S.K. has always been vehicles transforming into weapons and armor systems. Pye, what was the challenge of updating those iconic transformations for modern audiences while still capturing the toyetic fun fans expect? Dan, after writing Destro, what was appealing about tackling another corner of the Energon Universe? Did your experience with Destro help shape how you approached M.A.S.K., or did you want this book to have a completely different flavor? The first issue hints at a larger arms race involving technology and weapons that may not even originate on Earth. How much of M.A.S.K. is a spy thriller versus a science-fiction story, and where does it fit tonally alongside Transformers, G.I. Joe, and Void Rivals? Bruce Sato and Gloria Baker are positioned as key new recruits. What qualities do they bring to M.A.S.K. that complement or challenge Matt Trakker's leadership style? The original M.A.S.K. comic debuted in 1987 and had a very different view of global threats and military organizations. Were there any specific elements from that era that you deliberately updated to reflect modern anxieties and geopolitics? Fun question: If you could each claim one M.A.S.K. vehicle and mask from the entire franchise to use in real life for a week, which would you pick and what completely irresponsible thing would you do with it?

While visiting relatives in the Kansas City, MO area, Mike naturally found time to seek out a comic shop. He struck gold when he met A to Z Comics owners Debby and Steve Welch and their grandson, Damon. A to Z Comics is located in Blue Springs, MO, just outside of Kansas City, and has been in business for over 35 years by Debby and Steve Welch. It has some of the most friendly and knowledgeable staff Mike has met, and it has a massive inventory that spans generations of pop culture. Mike had the pleasure of talking with Debby and Damon and hearing about the history of the shop. A family owned and operated business is always an added touch. Then, Mike is joined by his comrade from across the Atlantic, Greg Stephenson, to discuss Void Rivals Vol 1. Greg is a skilled and professional artist that Mike met in the UK a couple of years ago and is an avid comics fan. His love of comics in general, and particularly comics from the Energon Universe, shines through in this review. Be sure to check out Greg's Instagram page at https://www.instagram.com/gregory.stephenson/ to see some magnificent art and inquire about his commission work! Find and follow A to Z Comics on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/AtoZComicsBlueSprings and be sure to stop in to visit this marvelous shop next time you're in the Kansas City area. You won't be disappointed! You can contact them at (816) 224-0505 and find them at 1300 SW US Highway 40, Blue Springs, MO, United States, 64015. Many thanks to Greg for joining me for the great discussion and to Debby and Damon for their super recommendation of Void Rivals!

Show notes provided by Joe PelusoG.I Joe: A Real American Hero" premiered 44 years ago, published by Marvel Comics Group ! And I can say--unequivocally--that I did not read the book. Nor, in the intervening decades, did I ever read G.I. Joe. I was too busy reading Superman, Batman, The Flash, Spider-Man,The Fantastic Four, The X-Men, and a slew of other comics that had nothing to do with fighter jets, tanks, and various bombs, missiles, and guns! My heroes flew without a plane, and didn't need a bazooka to blow a hole in a wall. Yeah, it was capes and cowls all the time. But something happened recently that struck my pop culture fancy and led me to Image comics, and its new ENERGON Universe. And it was something very simple and satisfying--GOOD stories. Stories that did not takeplace in the DC or Marvel Universes, but in a new reality thatpromised action, adventure, and great character development. Join James, and slightly embarrassed Joe (It took him four and half decades to catch up.), as they navigate this new world of Duke, Cobra Commander, Destro, Chameleon, The Twins, The B.A.T.S. (Boy, are these robots dumb!), and a host of new and exotic characters that has Joe excited, and James trying to keep up with his fan-boy questions. If you like our deep dives into the world of comic books, thenstrap in as James relates an amazing origin and history of the "Joes" and their wild ride through the decades, leading to this new reimagining. It is a master class that demands your attention. A grizzled old comics veteran like Joe did not think he coulddiscover something new in comics that would awaken his "little boy wide-eyed" wonder ever again. Boy, was he wrong! And if ENERGON is the vital source that powers the Autobots--maybe Joe has also tappedinto that energy. Comics are fun AGAIN!!!

After 16 issues, Dan checks back in with Joshua Williamson and Tom Reilly to talk about all things G.I. Joe! The series has been going strong at Skybound and Image for some time, so Dan wanted to do a retrospective on the series so far. Also, any excuse he can find to talk about Cobra Commander, he will take. With the DREADNOK WAR wrapping up this week with Issue #17, we wanted to take a chance to chat about the series and this big event. Joshua Williamson gives insight on writing Cobra Commander and Destro who are both the biggest personalities in any room they walk into. Tom Reilly talks about his character designs for them and how he tries to always give them the most flashy costumes because they have to stand out. We also dig into the first appearance of Road Pig with how the team approached Dan's new favorite character. The team shares thoughts on who the character is in their series and their Texas Chain Saw inspirations for him, including what is stated and what is implied. They dig into the future of G.I. Joe and what's to come in the Energon Universe. We talk about sharing all the cool toys in the Energon toy box and how they work together across teams to keep it cohesive. Joshua talks about collaborating with Robert Kirkman to make the line as tight and accessible as possible for new readers.

White - Venom Unleashed #15 uncut!Let's dig into our two poll questions. The first was:Jordan hinted that one moment in Death Spiral has been locked in since the very beginning of planning the event. What are you most excited to see when that moment arrives?A whopping 40% said they'd like to see a major MJ's symbiote relationship (30.8% said a big Eddie vs. Carnage throwdown). Given how strongly readers responded to the idea of Mary Jane's symbiote journey, what was it about pairing MJ with a symbiote that felt essential to Death Spiral, and how early did that relationship start shaping the story?AIPT: For the second poll, we asked:Jordan suggests MJ might be shifting from “anti-hero” to something else entirely. What do YOU think her 2026 role will look like?Over 50% of the answers said they want something they haven't even guessed yet (second place was a full street-level hero arc with 32%). Might they be on the right track? AIPT: Venom #253 is out now (January 7th), and with it's a whole new ballgame with AIM. Madame Masque is a character not often used, at least in the last decade. Might you have a favorite story she's kicked butt in?AIPT: And for our monthly gotcha question: What's a better TV show, Buddies or Friends?Onto fan questions:Spencer asks: What can you tell us about Torment? One more about Torment from Patrick: Was the name of Death Spiral's villain, Torment, inspired by the Todd McFarlane story, or is it a coincidence that the name has a history with Spider-Man?Ol' Monster-Face asks: Last time you got asked about taking the story in a space opera direction… What about a Wild West theme? "Death Spiral" does look like it could set up a classic "The Good The Bad And The Ugly" standoff…Barrett asks: With two big Spider / Symbiote events coming up very soon will the main ASM book and Venom books both be tie-ins for the foreseeable future?Anonomous asks: Will Dylan and Sleeper be an important role in Death Spiral? They are related to both Eddie and the Venom symbiote after all.Murphy asks: Did you look at any prior stories when writing the Rick Jones and Toxin bond? It reminds me of the relationship he had with Genis, especially when he went off the rails.Garlador asks: As a repository of host memories, Venom is uniquely aware of many characters current conflicted feelings - Peter, MJ, Eddie, Dylan, Flash, etc. That's been an off-limits locked box issue with MJ, but can we expect to see Venom share more of prior hosts' buried feelings with her soon, or is that too messy for now?RadiantBlue asks: Which Venom host is your favorite?Midnighter82 asks: Symbie, Spider-Man's symbiote companion in his galactic adventure, is he bound to a host or not? Jimmy has a food and calories question: So, what is it like for Mary Jane in her daily life? The symbiote probably weighs at least twice her weight and leaves a bunch of goop all over after fights, so presumably that would be lots more food than she would be used to having.Anonomous asks: Its kinda frustrating seeing VENOM everywhere and no Carnage. If you could would you tackle a carnageverse? Besides the Anne Lethal Protector universe, are there worlds where carnage is an anti-hero? Jeduwin asks: As a fan of Eventuality, how much is it kept in mind when you're writing Eddie Brock? Its existence seems like it shifts where Eddie's stories are headed, since all roads lead to the King in Black.Another Flash question from Symbiobro: In All-New Venom #10, we got to see a deep dive into both MJ's and the symbiotes relationship with Eddie, but Flash Thompson also played a big role in both these people's lives. Can we expect a similar delve into how he helped shape the symbiote into what it is today?
