Welcome to a special episode of MythTake! Rather than bring you our usual format of myth analysis, we're doing something a little different. We're giving this episode over to talk about race in classics. The Black Lives Matter movement has been gaining renewed momentum, and hashtags like #shutdownacademia and #blackintheivory are highlighting the experiences of Black people in academia. Classics itself is a predominately white whose area of research gets co-opted for white supremacist causes. To push back against this, and to help elevate Black voices in Classics, we put out a Twitter call for Black classicists to use our platform to share their stories. Today, we're pleased to bring you this interview with John Bracey. John Bracey, aka @magisterbracey on Twitter, is a Latin teacher in Massachusetts teaching Latin using the Comprehensible Input technique.. He has an MA in Classics from Boston College and in 2016 he was named Latin Teacher of the Year by the Massachusetts Foreign Language Association. He leads workshops for teachers around the US on language teaching. He has written in Eidolon about his experience trying to get hired as a Black Latin teacher and why students of color don’t take Latin. Find John online at https://magisterbracey.com. This episode is kindly sponsored by Our Voices in Classics, a not-for-profit organization that proactively seeks to amplify and uplift the voices of students and scholars at all levels whom the field of Classics has traditionally marginalized, ignored, or silenced.   Links Find our growing collection of links to resources on talking about race and on race and racism in academia on Wakelet. Today we visit the first of the Gas Giants, Jupiter. This mysterious planet, covered with swirling, toxic clouds in shades of orange, red, white, and brown, is the largest in our solar system. The "King of the Planets" is named after the Greek and Roman king of the gods, Jupiter (Zeus). Oh, and there are also records to discuss!  New 45s by Games, Missing Monuments, and a dollar bin diamond by The Beach-Nuts.  New albums from Paul Collins, The Yolks, and an 80s cowpunk gem by The Joneses.  (So filthy!)

Yeah dude, EPISODE #35 of Random Old Records is finished, fresh off my hard drive to yours, and this one is chock-full of jams! Not only that, but this time around there's no dance pop. Yep, 100% dance pop free! It kicks off with a track from Vancouver's Dead Ghosts, who put out one of the best rock n' roll debut albums I've heard in a long time earlier this year. It sounds like a bunch of degenerate punk kids who grew up on beat-up vinyl copies of early Stones records. A few minutes later, there's a tune from the upcoming second Dum Dum Girls record on Sub Pop, and Dee Dee Dum Dum has morphed into a master of the pop song. "Bedroom Eyes" sounds straight outta 1985, a simpler time when songs that still resembled rock n' roll made it onto pop radio. It sounds like the love song from a classic big-budget 80s flick, and just try to make it through without getting that chorus stuck in your head. It's impossible!Elsewhere, I dig deep into my bank of classic tunes and pull out stuff by Big Star, The Raspberries, Captain Beefheart, Thee Headcoats, and Louis Jordan. Plus, you'll hear a set of original punk rock from The Ramones, Stiff Little Fingers, and The Rezillos, and a sprinkling of newer tracks by Jacuzzi Boys, Bare Wires, Fungi Girls, and Missing Monuments. Hot DAMN! Nestled deep in the playlist, you'll find a track from The Streys, a bunch of kids from the Cleveland suburbs who cranked out a few singles of hammer-dumb 60s garage punk before disappearing forever. It all wraps up with "Since You've Gone" by Spanky And Our Gang, one of the most dazzling displays of psychedelic vocal harmony I've ever heard. All in all, this is one of the best episodes of Random Old Records I've put together in awhile, so go to the normal locations and download it right away!
