Justin Amaral first made a name for himself touring the country in the jam band scene, leading to shows with Mike Gordon of Phish and a profile in Modern Drummer's (April, 2004) “On The Move” column. After world tours with alt-country guit-steel legend Junior Brown, Justin relocated to Nashville and quickly became first call for many of Nashville's finest players and songwriters including Paul Burch, Tim Carroll, Fats Kaplin, Jon Byrd, Charles Butler and the late, great David Olney. In addition, Justin has performed and recorded with Jim Lauderdale (Late Night with Conan O'Brien), Laura Cantrell, Michelle Wright, The Wild Iris Brass Band feat. Jeff Coffin, Dennis Crouch, Milan Miller, Mike Farris, Layton Howerton, Tommy Womack, Chris West and many more. Justin maintains an active performing and recording schedule working at some of Nashville's most prestigious studios like Blackbird, Creative Workshop and the Hen House as well as venues like The Bluebird, The 5Spot, The Exit/In and Roberts Western World. In 2024 Justin released a collection of traditional hymns re-imagined as world beat instrumental duets called LIFE IN GROOVELAND - The Hymnal. Each track features a different instrumentalist. In this episode, Justin talks about: Heeding the call to do your own thing The origin of his new record: LIFE IN GROOVELAND - The Hymnal Creating your own opportunities Jump starting the creative process The inspiration of Drum and Fife Practicing movement and visualization as a technique
Our host, Andy Peavyhouse, recalls how, since starting this podcast, it has been a constant reminder of the power hymns have played in his journey of faith. He remembers how each hymn paints another picture of his walk with Christ and how hymns can be the cornerstone of our faith journey. One hymn that paints quite a vivid picture of Christ's triumphant victory through his finished work on the cross is Thomas Kelly's "Look Ye Saints, the Sight is Glorious." It unfolds in a symphony of poetic majesty. Each verse is a brushstroke of truth, painting the ultimate victory of Christ. We'll explore the richness of this hymn, as we dive into its authorship, history, and theology. This episode is a heartfelt tribute to hymnody's ability to capture the soul's deepest cries and loftiest praises, to strike that tender chord within us that resonates with God's truth. We'll see how this hymn echoes Scripture, inviting us all to acknowledge Jesus as the Lamb who was slain and now reigns victorious. Join us, as we honor the Lenten and Easter seasons by amplifying the joyous acclamation of Christ's triumph, encouraging listeners to reclaim the hymns that have shaped our faith, and to carry their powerful messages of truth to a lost and dying world.SHOW CREDITS AND LINKS:Andrew Peterson's “Is He Worthy?” Red Mountain Church Music Red Mountain Hymn Collective "Crown Him" Taken from This Breaks My Heart of Stone: A Collection of Hymns from Red Mountain Church Download the entire Red Mountain Music catalogue of songs in one PDF Songbook (does not include hymns from Silent Night, Demos & B-sides). Produce records with bands or bricks? Dave talked about assembling a production for an artist, songwriting for publishing vs self, how to get songs finished, the importance of sightlines and headphones, and how to find your voice on stage and studio. Get access to FREE mixing mini-course: https://MixMasterBundle.com My guest today is Dave Coleman who grew up near the Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area, in Jamestown, Tennessee. He thought he'd become a park ranger, but his love of guitar and music sent Dave to Belmont University in Nashville. He started a band (The Coal Men, still active after 24 years), had a brief publishing deal with Acuff-Rose Music, played for years with Duane Jarvis, and a long list of Nashville's roots and Americana artists. Producing, recording, and mixing became his day to day around 2010. He's a self described “multi-instrumentalist with a community-driven heart.” Dave has produced and recorded albums for Amelia White, Tim Carroll, The Rough & Tumble, Lynn Taylor and the BarFlies, Ned Hill, and lots more. The Coal Men, have released 5 albums, with another coming in 2024. I have had the pleasure of knowing Dave for many years and in 2013 worked with Dave here at The Toy Box Studio doing overdubs and mixing his record Escalator. We are reminded that we are all part of the grand cosmic scheme, here to navigate our journey on this wondrous orb. As guardians of the seeds, protectors of the sacred, we can harmonize with the universe, speaking in gentle whispers or blowing our truths. The world is our muse, a source of inspiration guiding us, beckoning us to glimpse the mountains, stars, and the flowing river of time. We are here to groove through the planet, preserving its beauty and the symphony of life at all costs. We fill this world with ancient melodies, with the amber flow of existence, like a phoenix, strange and beautiful, the road made to turn at its end. But it's a journey with a purpose, the rhythm of life itself. This show is part of the Spreaker Prime Network, if you are interested in advertising on this podcast, contact us at https://www.spreaker.com/show/4144937/advertisement
American racing expert and AtTheRaces pundit Barry Faulkner, along with international racing expert and SKY Sports Racing presenter Tim Carroll, join Emmet for our annual Breeders Cup special as racing returns to the iconic venue where surf meets turf at Santa Anita. Barry and Tim share some bullish bets as we preview every feature race on Friday and Saturday, offering strong opinions, insightful analysis, and plenty of fun. Barry has a strong each-way play in the Juvenile Turf Sprint, while all three of us are eager to take on the red-hot favorite Tamara in the Juvenile Fillies. Barry's strongest bet of the meeting is in the Juvenile Fillies Turf, Tim has a 7/1 wager in the Juvenile, while Emmet makes the case for an Aidan O'Brien clean sweep in the Juvenile Turf. It's hard to ignore the incredible story of Cody's Wish in the Dirt Mile. Both Tim and Barry strongly agree on their bet against the two market leaders in the Filly & Mare Turf. We're all backing Goodnight Olive in the Filly & Mare Sprint, although there's a difference of opinion on the Breeders' Cup Mile. Tim and Barry both discuss a value bet in the Distaff, and there's a lively debate about the race of the meeting, the Turf, where Auguste Rodin, Mostahdaf, King Of Steel, Onesto, Up To The Mark, and Shahryar go to war in a renewal that rivals the High Chaparral/Johar epic from 20 years ago. While Barry and Tim are once again in agreement on their bet in the Classic, we also convince ourselves of a value play in the Turf Sprint and Sprint. Martin Audio managing director Dom Harter and Focusrite CEO Tim Carroll discuss the partnership between the two companies and the biggest opportunities and challenges facing the industry.
You've heard about Peter Oswald's plays...now hear from the man who directed those new verse plays at the Globe! That's right, Colin and Emily sit down to chat with none other than the Artistic Director of the Shaw Theatre, Tim Carroll. (And a note from Colin: definitely listen to the end of the episode to hear one of the most heartening pieces of advice for every theatre artist and person.) In this interview, we'll chat about Barton/Hall Royal Shakespeare Center approach to text, the experience of directing and collaborating on new verse (such as Peter Oswald's The Golden Ass starring Mark Rylance at Shakespeare's Globe Theatre), and so much more. http://www.hamlettohamilton.com http://www.patreon.com/hamlettohamilton
Join Smilin' Jay McDowell, guitar-player-turned-upright bassist from the small town of West Lafayette, Indiana, as he takes you on his journey from watching and playing in bands in the back room at Lucy's to traveling the world with BR5-49. If you lived in Nashville in the 90s and loved live music you may have known about the punk scene at Lucy's, but you definitely knew about the resurgence of hillbilly and western swing played in the seedy honky tonks on Lower Broad. Jay felt equally at home in both places. Some nights he'd hang out and watch bands at Lucy's or play a gig there with the band Hellbilly. Other nights he'd go downtown to drink cheap beer and watch Greg Garing, Paul Burch, Tim Carroll, or BR5-49 play at Tootsie's or Robert's Western Wear. When he was asked to join BR5-49 he jumped at the chance (it may have been the liquor talking), switching his primary instrument from guitar to stand-up bass and adding some additional style and substance to a band already bursting with it. Jay's tales include his favorite shows at Lucy's, what the scene was like on Lower Broad both pre- and post-BR5-49, chatting with Keith Richards and John Fogerty, touring with Bob Dylan, and what it was like when ALL the record companies came a-callin'. Smilin' Jay McDowell heads the video department at The Musicians Hall of Fame in Nashville, TN, which opened to bring attention to studio and road musicians who play a vital role in the creation of music but rarely get the attention they deserve. He even has his own well-deserved exhibit in the museum celebrating his work as a session bass player with artists such as Marty Stuart, Dierks Bentley, The Black Crowes, Alan Jackson, Levon Helm, The Crickets and BR5-49. Go see it. This episode is dedicated to John Van Etten (1966-1995), Timothy White (1952-2002), and Jim Bessman (1952-2021). Episode Music Hellbilly - Make a Mess Los Straitjackets - Fury Lambchop - Cowboy on the Moon BR5-49 - Little Ramona (Gone Hillbilly Nuts) BR5-49 - Ole Slewfoot (Live from Robert's) Additional Mentions/Links: John Van Etten, The Shindigs, John Delworth, Laura Matter (The genius behind kickball), Hellbilly, The ‘Boro, Fun Girls From Mt. Tim was one of the very first people I met when I moved to Tennessee. At the time, we both were teaching the Tennessee handgun carry classes at the same range. Tim is the Founder of LFX Firearms Training specializing in defensive firearms training. Tim also appeared with Chris Cerino of the History Channel's Top Shot and Gun Talk's Tom Gresham in First Person Defender, a television show by Gun Talk Media. You can watch his episode on YouTube. In 2017, Tim accepted an apprenticeship from Tiger McKee at Shootrite Firearms Academy. Tiger is a lifelong student of personal combat and is one of the nation's top firearms instructors for armed citizens, law enforcement, military, and security personnel. As well as being a competitive shooter, Tim has certifications as an instructor from the NRA, the state of Tennessee as well as certifications in high angle rescue, confined space rescue, and hazardous material emergency. I highly recommend if you're ever in the East Tennessee area to take a class with him on his private range. One of the resources we discuss in this episode is the Emergency Response Guidebook, which everyone should have a copy of. This is a can't miss episode!
