Bside Incoming: ELLES This episode we give a warm welcome to an increasingly acclaimed DJ who features regularly on Rinse FM and Netil, has released tracks on Naive, Love on the Rocks, and Dark Entries, as well as gracing the decks at such renowned venues as Wilde Renate, KALT, Wide Awake, Field Day, and Glastonbury: it's https://soundcloud.com/e_l_l_e_s. Her career is shaped by the earliest creative endeavours crafting mixtapes from tracks recorded from the radio, drawing, and customising clothes; her formative years of DJ inspiration at London's legendary queer parties and warehouse raves; and a touching online relationship with Naive label boss Violet which has flourished into a wide ranging but consistently excellent array of productions on the Portuguese record label. With her sets, productions, and remixes ranging from dance floor bangers to ambient soundscapes, it's certainly no surprise that her episode of Bside would take us through her wide taste. Expect acid techno, traditional Irish folk, soft rock, euphoric house, wonky italo and everything in between. This week's show covers new music from Athens, Greece's Σtella from her new Redinho-produced album, London's The Hics, Athens, Georgia's Drive-By Truckers, and the team of Danger Mouse and Black Thought, of The Roots.  Brendan took us back to November of 1980 for this week's archive pick, an early blast from the goth rock cannon. Yes, a non-album single later added to In the Flat Field from Bauhaus—the original goth rockers, if you ask him. “Dark Entries” is the track. Of course, there are six more bonus tracks, but you have to sign up for our email newsletter to get those. (Great music in there, ladies and gentlemen.) It's pretty easy to do, if you just click this link.  (And do so without fear. We won't misuse your email address, as this show is run by two guys, Mark and Brendan; Not some faceless corporation.) Lastly, don't miss our fabulous Spotify playlists. We make one for each episode of the show, so grab the latest if you are up to date, and dig into previous episodes if you are new here, or just curious. Have a terrific week!

Episode 55 Drum Machines: A Recorded History, Part 2: Digital Drum Machines   Playlist Linn Drum Gary Numan, “My Brothers Time” from Dance (1981 Beggar's Banquet). Early use of the Linn LM-1 by John Webb on this track. Note the sound of the claves, played by Numan but not digital. Bass, Saxophone, Mick Karn; Linn LM-1 drum machine, John Webb; Piano, Claves, Gary Numan. (Stormy Night)” from Acoustic Moon (Sony 1981). Early recognition in Japan of the original Linn LM-1 drum machine. Rajie, vocals; Guitar, Mikihiko Matsumiya; Bass, Tsugutoshi Goto ; Chorus,  Hiroshi Koide,  Raji ; Composed By,  Akira Inoue ; Drums,  Tatsuo Hayashi ; Electric Guitar-Tsuyoshi Kon; Flute,  Motoya Hamaguchi ; Lyrics By,  Etsuko Kisugi ; Percussion,  Motoya Hamaguchi ; Prophet-10, Linn LM-1, Electric Piano,  Akira Inoue. Early Linn Drum Computer. 5:08 Herbie Hancock, “The Twilight Clone” from Magic Windows (1981 Columbia). If you want to study the latest in emerging electronic music instruments, just listen to the many albums by Herbie Hancock throughout the 1970s and 1980s. He was an early adopter of the Linn LM-1, heard here and played by Hancock. Bass, Louis Johnson; Linn LM-1 Drum Machine, Herbie Hancock; Ghanian Drums, Moody Perry III; Ghanian Drums, Bells, Kwasi Dzidzornu, Kwawu Ladzekpo; Lead Guitar, Adrian Belew; Percussion, Paulinho Da Costa; Rhythm Guitar, George Johnson; Written by, A. Belew, H. Hancock. 8:16 Don Henley, “The Boys of Summer” Linn Drum demo version (excerpt) (1984 private). Guitar and Linndrum, Mike Campbell; Synthesizer, Steve Porcaro; Synthesizer, Guitar, Danny Kortchmar. Bass, Larry Klein; vocals, lyrics, Don Henley. The instrumental part of the song came first and was put together by Tom Petty bandmate Mike Campbell who had just purchased a LinnDrum machine which was a more affordable model than the original LM-1 released in 1980. Campbell put together a rhythm track and played some guitar. Tom Petty wasn't interested in the song at that time, so it went to Henley, who wrote the lyrics. This demo was close to the final version. The final mix of the song also included some human drumming, as did live performances where a human drummer tried to replicate the sound of the original Linndrum. 0:42 Jean Michel Jarre, “Zoolookologie” from Zoolook (1984 Disques Dreyfus). A fascinating exploration of samples both of voice and drums. This is the later version of the Linn Linndrum machine, just before the introduction of the Linn 9000. There is pure joy in this track as Jarre uses the Linndrum to create many unexpected sounds and atypical rhythms. Bass, Marcus Miller; Composer, Producer, Ethnic Vocals Processing, Keyboards, Electronics, Jean-Michel Jarre; Drums, Yogi Horton; Daniel Lazerus; Guitar Ira Siegel; Guitar, Effects, Adrian Belew; Keyboards, Frederic Rousseau. 4:13 David Van Tieghem, “In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida” from In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida (1986 Wide Angle). Drummer and percussionist Van Tieghem created this version of the Iron Butterfly song using electronic drums (Octapads) and digital drums. Engineer, Programmed By Fairlight Programming Assistance, Eric Liljestrand; Guitar, Larry Saltzman; Vocals, Synthesizer Digital, Analog, Percussion Acoustic, Electronic, Mixed By, Producer, David Van Tieghem; Written-By, Doug Ingle. Basically a one-person performance aside from guitarist Saltzman. Van Tieghem was using both hand played electronic drums (the Octapads) plus some digital drum machines. 5:36 Suzanne Ciani, “Mosaic” from Neverland (1988 Private Music). Composed, Arranged, Performed, Produced by Suzanne Ciani. Among the many electronic instruments used by Ciani were keyboards made by Yamaha, Roland, and Bode (vocoder). For drum programming, she turned to the Linn 9000. This track has some decidedly simple, yet complex rhythms using the Linn 9000 that are truly nuanced and more jazz like. The care with which she programmed this track is in contrast to the typical drum machine beats you hear on records. Ciani also used a Roland TR-707 on this album, which you may also detect on this track. 4:37 Oberheim DMX Todd McKinney, “Kimberlite” from The Sound Of The System (1982 Oberheim). This 7-inch demo disc includes music created by Todd McKinney and Daniel Soger, two Oberheim employees. “Kimberlite” was composed and performed by McKinney using the DMX Programmable Digital Drum Machine, the DSX Digital Polyphonic Sequencer, and the OB-Xa Polyphonic Synthesizer. 2:28 Tangerine Dream, “Poland” from Poland (The Warsaw Concert) (1984 Jive Electro). You can hear the Bohn Digital Drums in the first half of the song and the Oberheim DMX in the second half. But that's a bit of a guess. Dr. Böhm DIGITAL DRUMS was a rhythm machine made in Germany from 1982-83, also known as ''the German Linndrum.'' Composed, performed, and produced by Tangerine Dream. Jupiter 8, PPG Wave 2.3 Waveterm, Minimoog, Korg Monopoly, Sequenced by EEH CM 4 Digital Sequencer, Bohm Digital Drums, Roland Tr 808 Drums, Roland SDE 3000 Delay, MXR 01 Digital Reverb, MXR Digital Delay, Johannes Schmoelling; Prophet 5, Prophet 600, Prophet 1, E-mu Custom Programmable Synth, Moog Custom Programmable Modular Synth, MTI Synergy, Sequenced by the PE Polyrhythmic Sequencer, Compulab Digital Sequencer, Syntec Custom Digital Drum Computer, Electronic Drums Simmons Drum Modules, Effects Quantec Room Simulator, Roland SDE 3000, Electronics Hill Multi-mixer, Chris Franke; Yamaha DX 7, Yamaha YP 30, Jupiter 8, Jupiter 6, Prophet 5, PPG Wave 2.2, Sequenced By Pe Polyrhythmic Sequencer, EEH Cm 4 Digital Sequencer, PE Custom Trigger Selector, DMX Oberheim Digital Drum machine, Edgar Froese. 8:43 Herbie Hancock, “Earth Beat” from Future Shock (1983 Columbia). In addition to the DMX, this track includes evidence that Garfield Electronics Dr. Click Rhythm Controller was a much-needed rhythm device for wrangling the otherwise incompatible signals prior to the introduction of MIDI a few years later. Craig Anderton wrote the following about Doctor Click in an article in Keyboard from 1983: "Doctor Click is not a keyboard instrument, not a drum machine, and not a signal processor: What it does is synchronize and interface these three families of devices together. Not only can it interface to existing sync tracks, it can build up click tracks from incomplete click tracks, and even create sync and/or click tracks which are referenced to a live musician." Hancock masters Dr. Click on this album. Fairlight CMI, Yamaha GS-1, Yamaha CE-20, Dr. Click Rhythm Controller, Herbie Hancock; DMX Drum Machine, Synare Electronic Drums, Memory Moog Programming, Michael Beinhorn; Bass, Bill Laswell; Bata, Daniel Ponce; Turntables – Grandmixer D. ST. 5:09 Herbie Hancock, “Hardrock” from Sound System (1984 Columbia). The sound of the Oberheim DMX digital drum machine as used by Herbie Hancock. This album was his follow-up to the album Future Shock on the DMX made a famous appearance in the song Rockit, which was unusually a top-selling hit for Hancock. The DMX is played here by non-other than Bill Laswell. Note that Simmons electronic drums are also being played on this track by Anton Fier, but I think you can tell the difference. Bass, Drum Machine DMX, Tape, Bill Laswell; Bata, Daniel Ponce; Simmons electronic drums, Sound Plates, Cuica, Anton Fier; Guitar, Henry Kaiser, Nicky Skopelitis; Fairlight CMI Programming, Will Alexander; Fairlight CMI, Rhodes Chroma, Apple IIe, Yamaha DX7, Emu 4060 Digital Keyboard, Herbie Hancock; Synthesizer (XMD), Rob Stevens; Turntables, D. St; Written-By, B. Laswell, D. Showard, Herbie Hancock. 6:10 Davy DMX, “Bonus Beats” from One For The Treble (Fresh) (1984 Tuff City). Davy DMX when he first met the Oberhheim DMX digital sampling drum machine. He is also known as David Franklin Reeves, Jr. Here is a bonus track of only drum machine and turntable. 1:47 Davy DMX, “One For The Treble (Fresh) (Instrumental)” from One For The Treble (Fresh) (1984 Tuff City). Davy DMX when he first met the Oberheim DMX digital sampling drum machine. Another track from that same 12-inch. 7:31 Movement MCS Drum Computer John Foxx, “Pater Noster” from The Garden (Virgin 1981). This album was produced after Foxx left Ultravox. It is another example of the MCS Drum Computer. This track only features Foxx on synthesizers, voice, drum programming, and a manually struck Tom Tom. 2:30 Roland El Escuadrón Del Ritmo, “Las Cucarachas” from Back Up: Mexican Tecno Pop 1980-1989 (2021 Dark Entries). I discovered this wonderful collection of Mexican synth-pop tracks, some never before heard, and immediately dug-out a track using a drum machine. This track is from 1982. In this case, the drum machine is the Roland Compu-Rhythm CR-78, which was a transitional analog device with analog drum sounds and digital control for programming patterns. 3:44 Nahtabisk, “La Dama De Probeta” from Back Up: Mexican Tecno Pop 1980-1989 (2021 Dark Entries). Another hidden gem from Mexico. This track is from 1984 and features the Roland drumTR-606 Drumatix. The TR-606 featured PCM-encoded sounds of real drums. This small device, that ran on batteries, helped define the sound of early techno. 3:20 E-mu Joe Mansfield, “Drumulator (Instrumental)” from Drumulator (2014 Get On Down). This is a track featuring the sounds of the E-mu Drumulator that was sold from 1983 to 1985. It had twelve, 8-bit sampled sounds of real drums and at about $1000 was more affordable that drum machines like the Linndrum and Oberheim DMX. It was created on the heels of the sample synthesizers they made under the Emulator name. It also had a relatively short life so few recordings from the time were made. This demo is an example of what could be done with the Drumulator and Herbie Hancock took a liking to it prior to switching to the Oberheim DMX. 2:02 Richard Souther, “Uncharted Waters” from Innermission (1986 Meadowlark Records). Music and realization by Richard Souther. Includes synthesizers from Roland, PPG, Sequential Circuits, and Casio. He also used both the Linn 9000 and E-mu SP-12 drum machines, which are both heard on this track. You can clearly hear the Linn 900 and its distinctive snare and bass sounds, while the E-mu, which was built around the circuits in the company's popular keyboard samplers, provided some of the more unusual, even exotic, percussion sounds. 3:23 Alesis Slant, “Sheep” and “Ducks” from Hive (1989 These Records). This amazing group, although short-lived, was a British experiment in rock with noise elements that included Cris Cheek, Philip Jeck, Sianed Jones, and Osian Tam. Cross used an Alesis HR-16, which is showcased in the second of two tracks, “Ducks.” I think that is probably the same drum machine in the first track, “Sheep” so I thought this represented some good contrast in the way that the sound could be treated. This had 49 digital samples of drums that could be programmed in real-time by playing the velocity sensitive drum buttons. Double Bass Julia Doyle; Guitar, Cabasa, Engineer, Co-producer Maciek Hrybowicz; Keyboards, Accordion, Synthesizer DX7; Piano, Clarinet, Voice, Marimba, Goblet Drum Darabouka, Tambourine, Bells Agogo Bells, Sampler Cassette Samples, Flute Souffara, Rattle Seed Pod Rattles, Performer Emax, Alesis HR-16, Breath Rhythms, Face Slap, Mixed By, Co-producer Cris Cheek; Turntables, Radio Philip Jeck; Violin, Piano, Vocals, Organ, Fife, Viol Viola Da Gamba, Harmonium, Claves, Performer Emax, Breath Rhythms, Mixed By, Co-producer Sianed Jones; Voice Osian Tam. 4:31 Closing, Linn LinnDrum Mikel Rouse, “Quorum part 2” from Quorum (1984 Club Soda Music). It was inevitable that a composer would create an extended piece of music using only the Linn Linndrum. Mikel Rouse was that person. Listen to the hypnotic patterns of this work. From the composer's notes: “Quorom is a piece for LinnDrum machine (or 18 percussion players) in 9 parts running approximately 1 hour and 45 minutes in length. Though the sequence of parts 1 through 9 must be maintained, the parts may be divided into sections, or run continuously. Themes are produced through the synchronization of the 3 generators, 3-5-8, and their complimentary factors yield counterthemes. Power series are then applied to produce harmonic contrasts from the original themes. Thematic material is developed through multiple variation techniques (circular permutations, accents through superimposition of an additional component, natural growth through the summation series). I decided to undertake the programming myself and, with the aid of Jim Bergman, successfully completed the programming in about 5 hours. I would like to stress that all programming was done through the step-by-step process provided in the operator's manual for construction “songs” from “patterns”. No special treatments or extensions (including cassette interfaces) were required.” Such was the versatility of the Linn Linndrum. 11:16   Background Sounds Volti, “Corazón” from Back Up: Mexican Tecno Pop 1980-1989 (2021 Dark Entries). Mexican electro-pop group. This track is from 1986 and features unknown drum programming. vocals, synthesizer, Lyndell Brookhouse; bass, synthesizers, drum programming percussion, Eddie Rubello; Backing Vocals, Katie Taylor; Congas, Edgar Herrera; Piano, Vincent Kenis; Timbales, Pedro Ortiz. 3:45. Adams and Fleisner, tracks “a1, a2, b1, b2, b3” from Modern Digital Recorded Drumcomputer Rhythm Tracks (1983 Break Records). I think this track of library digital drum samples from the Netherlands was made with the Drum Computer MCS II (or Percussion Computer) from Movement Computer Systems, a rare British made-drum machine circa 1983. It had an integrated CRT monitor and had an orange (or black) case. It used 8-bit samples of drums and featured 14 voices and programmable patterns. Opening: Opening and closing sequences voiced by Anne Benkovitz. Additional opening, closing, and other incidental music by Thom Holmes. For additional notes, please see my blog Noise and Notations. There are dozens of drum machines that dot the history of electronic music. For an encyclopedic list of almost every drum machines ever made, and there were dozens of variations and models up until around 1985, check-out the excellent books by Alex Graham, a UK-based drum machine collector and specialist.

Avantgardistische Elektronika und frickelige Klangexperimente. ## NOKO 143 - Deutsche Amouren This is a lovely overview of the fantastic german dilettantes pop cassette underground from that golden epoch between punk rock and good computers. crammed full of minimal human played electronic synth punk that sounds like it was made today, and in some cases tomorrow! the result is a clutch of a bizarre, fuzzy, minimal tunes straight from some murky U-Bahn to Kassette Himmel. 1. On the third episode of the Post-Punk Podcast music industry veteran and contributing editor Thomas Thyssen joins Editor in Chief Alex Baker for an interview with Clan of Xymox founder and frontman Ronny Moorings. During the interview, we look back on 40 years of the band, beginning with their rare Demo EP Subsequent Pleasures, and discuss how with the help of Dead Can Dance's Brendan Perry, Clan of Xymox were signed to 4AD. Throughout the interview, we delve further into Clan of Xymox's 4AD years. During this time, they would release their classic 1985 self-titled debut album, which features the fantastic single A Day, and Stranger, both remixed by John Fryer into dancefloor hits as the and its follow-up Medusa. In light of Clan of Xymox's recent release Peel Sessions on vinyl, we also discuss the two recording sessions for John Peel's radio show, which, as legends goes, is how the Genre 'Darkwave" was coined. For the first time in decades, these Peel recordings are finally available on vinyl and digital formats through Dark Entries. George Horn remastered all songs at Fantasy Studios. Eloise Leigh designed the sleeve, taking inspiration from Vaughn Oliver's iconic designs for 4AD. A 2-sided insert with archival photos and notes from Ronny and Anka recounting their experiences recording at the BBC studio. Пластинка называется «Some Funkettes». The Temptations «Papa Was A Rolling», «Chameleon» Херби Хенкока и «Do It Anyway You Wanna» от проекта People’s Choice. В него войдут выпущенные в августе песни "Cyr" и "The Colour of Love". Smashing Pumpkins 'Shiny And Oh So Bright, Vol. 1 / LP: No Past. No Future. No Sun." вышла в 2018 году, а в 2019-м Корган выпустил сольный релиз "Cotillons".

He is originally from New Jersey and grew up exploring New York and taking trips to Pennsylvania where he was exposed to goth rock and other alternative genres. His journey from a kid growing up in New Jersey to joining Honey Sound System and founding Dark Entries in San Francisco are his unique qualifications for being an authority on DIY enterprises. In this interview session, we will explore not only his story, but Josh's perspectives on the importance of having a DIY mentality, his life in San Francisco, and how his experiences have shaped what he does today. Club Room: Backstage sees Anja Schneider ditching the turntables in favour of a microphone as the lauded DJ, renowned talent scout and trailblazing label owner of Sous Music gets to grips with the opinions of industry heads as they discuss the most pressing issues effecting the electronic music right now. Red Axes are Dori Sadovnik and Niv Arzi. Born and raised in Tel Aviv the duo have honed their adventurous, genre-blending sound for the best part of the last decade, following the likes of Daft Punk, Justice and Boys Noize as creative bridges in the cultural gap between the ever expanding world of electronic music and the post-punk world of rock n roll as they bring an alternative edge to the often all too functional world of house and techno. Having just released their third album, ‘Red Axes' on Dark Entries, Anja made the time to speak to Dori about the experience of releasing an album during a global pandemic, how the creative process works within a band, and Red Axes series of acclaimed ‘Trips' documentaries.

Hey - this is subscriber's preview of an hour conversation with Martyn Goodacre - he's a Quiet legend. More short fiction from me coming soon. I'm writing about jackals of Baalbek, they're hungry to lose their fleas. You probably know Martyn Goodacre's photographs - THAT photo of Kurt Cobain, with the bleach bowl cut and the eyeliner. His pictures have graced the covers of many many magazines, and I'm lucky to have written stories in the same publications. The podcast is also available on iTunes, Spotify and many other platforms. Click here for those links. When I heard Martyn was doing an exhibition of his early photos at Das Gift in Berlin, I wanted to publish a book around it. It was his first exhibition, and also his first book. It's my first photobook. In record time (about 2 weeks), we turned around this 68 page book. It's got a velvet laminate, and feels like rubber. The photos are DOPE. You can buy it here. The book is limited to 100 editions, with a hand-printed belly band that I stayed up for a few nights making. It's laid out by Anne-Cathrin Saure, who's based in Berlin, and also laid out Cold Lips 02, and our first book, Dark Entries by Richard Cabut. The radical photobook, which is A5 landscape, is called WHOS F****N PLANET - for reasons which are explained on the podcast. The book catalogues his exploits in South London, shadowed by punk - squatting at the Fire Station on the Old Kent Road, which hosted the first London gigs for Psychic TV, Jesus & Mary Chain, and many more. He later turned his lens on horse travellers, and the New Age movement. The book features photos of Billy Bragg, Madness, and stars of the underground scene. It's a radical autobiographical photobook with the most enlightening introduction written by Goodacre. For me, this is the story of free land before the Criminal Justice Act (1994). We recorded this conversation after the opening night in Neukölln, Berlin. Pre-covid. It is edited by Sebastian Bowden.I'm going to be posting a new short story soon - so stay tuned. Stay safe. And enjoy the words.x Kirsty Allison To hear more, visit kirstyallison.substack.com

Earlier this month it was announced that Sepehr would be releasing his debut album via Josh Cheon's renowned label Dark Entries. That in itself provides a very telling introduction as to how excited we are to bring you this mix. Based in San Francisco he is an eclectic, forward thinking producer who weaves and wanders between acid, techno, house and all out psychedelia. The city has educated him well, teaching him the rights and wrongs and he has evolved into a musical powerhouse along the way. Previous appearances have seen him release music via EON, Legwork and Trippy Ass Technologies. He has also previously released on Dark Entries in the form of the "Body Mechanics" EP. A moody acid driven affair which worked wonders in the club. His new album sees him pay homage to his Iranian heritage, channeling the sounds and ideas prevalent on 70's records and their spirit. He reinvents the music for a new age.

Raised in small town Indiana on a musical diet of 80s synth pop and punk rock, Noncompliant soon found barnyard raves and warehouse techno parties and (as DJ Shiva) quickly became a fixture of the fabled 90s Midwest USA rave scene. Two decades and a name change later, she is at the top of her techno game. Mixmag named her one of 2017’s Top 20 Breakthrough DJs. She owned a packed and sweaty Boiler Room during Movement Detroit, turned in mindblowing mixes for Slam Radio, Discwoman, and Resident Advisor, and quaked some of the world’s most respected dance floors like Smartbar Chicago, Amsterdam’s DeSchool, Concrete in Paris, and Berlin's legendary Berghain. Her festival appearances include Unsound, Red Bull Music Festival Paris, Movement Detroit, and Whole United Queer Festival. As a producer, her releases and remixes on labels like Valence, Argot, Flash, and Dark Entries have pounded sound systems worldwide, with her tune “Women’s Work” landing on Fiedel’s official Berghain 08 mix and on his label Fiedeltwo. At her core, she is a die-hard techno fan with a deep love for music and a drive to continue honing her craft as a DJ and producer in order to share her favorite music with people on dance floors everywhere. From his adopted home of Berlin, DJ and journalist John Loveless runs his party and label Hot Concept. The roving party, where he also acts as resident, has seen him share the booth with a diverse range of artists, and has since evolved to include a label arm, which he launched in May of this year with an EP from Beigean. As a radio host he holds a residency at Lichtenberg's community-led platform Cashmere Radio, inviting the likes of Cormac, Daniel Avery, Karen Gwyer and Dark Entries boss Josh Cheeon to join him on his 'Display Resolution' show. Musically his monthly shows, and his DJ sets, explore offbeat house, psychedelic techno, heartfelt disco, outsider pop, transient ambience and, in his own words, "quite simply, whatever else works". Off the back of his inaugural label release, we invited him along to give us a glimpse into what John Loveless is all about...

The Hacker has long been turning out essential electro sounds that show off his mastery of his synths. But November will see him reveal another side when he releases analog album Le Théâtre des Opérations on Dark Entries. It finds the Frenchman indulge his love of EBM, techno and wave music and cook up a rugged, gritty and raw selection of tracks that joins the dots between Jeff Mills and Front 242, Dopplereffekt and Drexcyia. It’s arresting and unpredictable from start to finish. Happily, the live artist and producer indulges all those passions and more on this blistering one hour mix. It explores every facet of electro, from squelchy and dark to smooth and grooving. It’s a history lesson, really, that takes us through the musical adventures of The Hacker as well as electro at large. Turn it on, turn it up and turn yourself on to a master of the form.

Honey Soundsystem is an American creative collective that has become hugely influential in the decade since they formed. As DJs both solo and as a team, the San Fran foursome has more than made its mark with an eclectic sound that draws on the diverse backgrounds of the musicians, performers and designers involved. They also host their own parties—famed for fantastic art installations as well as carefully curated headliners from all across the musical spectrum—and run plenty of labels between them, including HNYTRX and most famously Dark Entries, which has poured many attention on Patrick Cowley with a series of resurrected releases. Very much setting their own agenda, then, the group does just the same with their two hour mix for us. It is a fresh offering that rolls through a bouncing selection of well polished house and techno. Clean and tinged with a stylish sense of retro-futurism throughout, there are nods to darker synth wave sounds and colourful disco vibes that will keep you coming back for more.

Shock World Service 064: Float A Boat(Rory Bowens) 2/5/16 London United Kingdom http://www.shockworldservice.com/ 1. D-Day - Float A Bort Beautiful mis-spelled dream pop from Japan. Taken from their 'Vale of Promises' release on that most elegant of formats, the Flexi-Disc. 2. Henri Texier - Amir Avant-Garde Jazz Vocal beauty from the French double bass player. 3. Stockton's Wing And Steve Cooney - Ice Fields I found this one in my Dad's 7" box on a trip home to Ireland last Christmas. The B-side of 'Skidoo' a popular didgeridoo led reel that ended up the Irish charts. This track, 'Ice-Fields' allegedly was recorded by Stephen Cooney on location at the Irish Arctic Expedition 1981 using a wind harp. 4. Bill Nelson- Sleeplessness Taken from Chamber Of Dreams (Music From The Invisibility Exhibition), a collection of backing tracks from his experimental multi-disciplinary performance project. The source material for these backing tapes came from the archives of the Echo Observatory. Bill Nelson's expansive back catalogue is endlessly interesting. One of Britains great avant-pop eccentrics, he suggests on the liner notes that “Musicians owning this album, might enjoy sketching their own ideas over these tracks in the privacy of their own home”. 5. Operating Theatre - Eighties Rampwalk (Fanning Session) Operating Theatre was Irish composer Roger Doyle's new wave band/ theatre troupe collaboration with Olwen Foure. Discovered this one on the excellent Strange Passion: Explorations In Irish Post Punk DIY And Electronic Music 1980-1983. Check it out if you haven't already 6. Unknown Artist - Veni L'amou (Come My Dear) Recorded by Alan Lomax in Blanchisseuse (Tunapuna-Piarco), Trinidad in 1962. Session notes say "Recording of the above tunes was made at the home of Mrs. Jean Eustache Stoute from 8 p.m. on May 2nd until early next morning.” 7. Wally Badarou - Endless Race Grab Badarou's Echoes album. 8. Makoto Matsushita - I Know Taken from his album 'First Light'. The broken English lyrics only add to the feeling of a relationship breakdown. 9. Mgqashiyo Ndlovu - Siyalivum'icala I know absolutely nothing about this one except from the caption on YouTube which reads "Zulu Music (South Africa)" 10. Bagarre - For Your Pleasure Really weird spoken word Italo-Disco tune. A lot of the joy of Italo comes from the often awful vocals and this is a prime example of that. 11. Vanity 6 - Make Up Prince Rogers Nelson & Denise Katrina "Vanity” Matthews RIP 12. Lives of Angels - Imperial Motors Taken from their Elevator To Eden album, lovingly reissued by Dark Entries a couple of years ago. Imperial! 13. Cleaners From Venus - The Jangling Man Beautiful stuff from UK home recording pioneer Martin Newell. What I love about the Cleaners From Venus catalogue is that all the tunes are unabashedly massive pop tunes and the lo-fi element doesn't feel in any way stylised, but rather just them doing their thing. 14. Slowdive - Crazy For You (Alternative Demo Version) The balearic sound of Slowdive. 15. Kath Bloom, Loren Mazzacane - When Your Dreams Come True Taken from their Restless Faithful Desperate album. Heartache. 16. Mense Reents - This Is The Way First heard this one a recording of a Donal Dineen set from Electric Picnic a few years back, a name most Shock World Service listeners are undoubtedly familiar with. The sad euphoric feeling of the tune is the quality I most enjoy in music.

(English) Steffi does not do things by halves, and this unwavering commitment to growing and challenging herself as a producer, DJ and label head has kept her at the forefront of contemporary dance music since the mid 90s. Born in the Netherlands, a move to Berlin led to an enduring residency at the city’s emblematic Berghain/Panoramabar, an experience that has translated effortlessly to the international clubs and festivals – big and small – at which she has long been a staple. As a producer, Steffi has an extensive discography that takes in albums, singles and remixes – solo and in collaboration – released by respected labels including Ostgut Ton, 3024, Dark Entries, Ed Banger and Because Music. Steffi’s long-running labels Klakson and Dolly continue to release a distinct blend of electro, breaks, Chicago and Detroit house and techno to this day. In recent years, Steffi’s tireless search for new ground has been made tangible in a permanent move to Portugal where, with Virginia, she founded the label, studio space and creative hub Candy Mountain. Candy Mountain(Steffi/Virginiaが運営するレーベル・スタジオ・クリエイティブハブ)で収録しました。 Interview(English): ーWhere did you record the DJ MIX? At the Candy Mountain Headquarters ーPlease let us know about the concept of DJ MIX? I always do something not dance floor related when I make a dj mix so I can put in tracks that dont get to see the daylight during dj sets. this time I decided to do a uptempo techno-ish mix as I havent done one of those in ages and I felt like it for a change so I took a selection of some new amazing stuff and a few older ones that I love. ーPlease let us know about the future activities (gigs and works etc) At the moment I am touring my new live show to promote my new album The Red Hunter that came out last Monday. I will take a little break in January and then come back fully rested for new projects. we have just set up a new project called Candy Mountain. Candy Mountain is a label, studio space and creative hub. The studio sits in the middle of nature. artists can live and work under the same roof with zero distractions in a tranquil environment. The perfect space to work and also connect with the local scene in here in Portugal. So we are finetuning everything so we can kick off receiving more people in 2023 and get the creative vibe going.
