i’ve been thinking a lot about storytelling. i feel like i’ve been telling stories in one form or another forever. i mean, we all do. we play make-believe as kids but i do the exact same thing now. maybe we just call it “banter” or something instead. but we riff off each other and create worlds and fantasy. i think that’s so fun, and when you find someone you immediately banter with well, it’s just such a cool connection. or we run through scenarios in our heads but we call it “anxiety” and typically keep these stories to ourselves.so many things to share about storytelling but one thing i think is so interesting is that i think my interest in telling stories has been strengthened and nurtured in therapy. when you talk to your therapist you are telling them your story. and if you’re doing it like me, every small story comes with additional context and tangents and reflection and that’s even before i give them a chance to respond. and then further reflecting on particular moments and themes allows me to connect them to other moments and themes and all of a sudden you find yourself trapped in this spider web of a life story. actually, no - i’m the spider, and i’m not trapped at all. i bounce around carefully from thread to thread, weaving new lines, rewriting old memories, eating flies.and then every time you transition to a new therapist it’s a chance to tell your entire story over again. and you’re so excited about that part of it. maybe too earnest. you weave more bits and pieces of story together and each time you think you have a better understanding of who and why you are. sometimes i’m concerned that i’m overconfident in the work that i’ve done and my ability to communicate it. i’m wondering about the performance of it all. is the story i tell about me actually me right now or a me i aspire to? can it be both? believing that someday i could write a memoir seems laughable but i want to. would you read it? it’ll be so embarrassing but it feels necessary to share it all.i’m just a few weeks into a break from formal therapy right now, but i’m still storytelling. recently it’s been with friends. in the actual real friend world. which i’m enjoying. and opening up in these spaces feels like it means something totally different than it had in therapy. i’m grateful to therapy for helping me explore my own stories but right now i’m more excited about connections and mashups and crossover episodes with friends. excited about friend stories colliding with my own and for the impact to be meaningful for them and for me.DOWNLOAD/STREAM RECORDING00:00 (intro by omar)00:20 Barry “Posh Club” Barry02:52 Hectorine “Motel Song” Hectorine07:21 Screaming Females “Zoo Of Death” Singles Too10:51 Amy O “Blueberries” Shell13:35 Empath “Drunken Angel” Drunken Angel / The Other Side16:25 Anna Meredith “Killjoy” FIBS20:07 Brave Radar “Face The Light” Brave Radar in… It’s Honey’s World21:19 Warp “Abracadabra” Traffic Control23:45 Great Grandpa “English Garden” Four of Arrows26:22 Black Marble “Shoulder” Bigger Than Life30:31 Brazilian Wax “Unicorn” Still Rippin’33:46 Dress Forms “places” we don’t dig guitars35:27 Dry Cleaning “Sit Down Meal” Boundary Road Snacks and Drinks EP39:06 Olivia’s World “SuperValu” Olivia’s World42:06 Mikal Cronin “Apathy” Mikal Cronin44:43 tombo crush “gaze aversion” text me when you get home45:52 Noera “FMLA” Pearls48:51 Walrus “Cool to Who” Cool to Who53:08 hanu vu “Order” Nicole Kidman / Anne Hathaway55:43 TOPS “Echo of Dawn” Echo of Dawn / Seven Minutes57:53 yipee! “The Mall of America, MN” The Cheese Store, MO/The Mall of America, MN59:52 Eyelash “Eating Art” Demo62:10 Macho Blush “Healing Artist” User Guide64:55 Mikayla McVey “roommates” Desert Companion67:48 Vagabon “Water Me Down” Vagabon

https://www.premierguitar.com/artists/guitarists/matt-sweeney (Matt Sweeney) doesn't want to dazzle you with rock guitar. That's boring. That's lazy. At least to him. He wants to mesmerize you. “Really, that's the point of music: to get people's minds off of whatever and to hypnotize them a little bit,” https://www.premierguitar.com/artists/guitarists/matt-sweeney (Sweeney told PG in 2021). After beginning his Superwolves collaboration with Will Oldham, “that's when I thought, ‘Cool, I did the thing that I wanted to do. I can fingerpick now and I can play with a really great singer who is working in an idiom that I hadn't worked in before.' “I started playing with Will and that gave me the opportunity to keep developing the way that I was playing, because it went well with his singing. After a couple of years, that led to Will suggesting that we write songs together.” The audible opiate that Sweeney provides has also cast his spell over the works of Rick Rubin, Johnny Cash, Neil Diamond, Adele, https://www.premierguitar.com/artists/cat-powers-journey (Cat Power), Run the Jewels, Chavez, John Legend, Zwan (collaboration with Billy Corgan), Tinariwen, “Cowboy” Jack Clement, https://www.premierguitar.com/videos/the-big-5/billy-gibbons (Billy Gibbons), and Margo Price. And with every episode of hypnosis comes a trance-breaking snapback. Providing that rhythmic recoil is Sweeney's current foil, https://www.premierguitar.com/artists/ty-segall-and-emmett-kelly-no-filter-frenzy (Emmett Kelly). Both have worked with Oldham, but until now—in the current Superwolves line-up—never together. Kelly steps into the fold with an indie and outsiders Rolodex filled with names like https://www.premierguitar.com/artists/guitarists/ty-segall (Ty Segall), Angel Olson, Azita, Cairo Gang, Mikal Cronin, The C.I.A., Earth Girl Helen Brown, Magic Trick, Doug Paisley, and Joan of Arc. Sweeney sums up their guitar-nership with his typical, sly-and-dry snark: “What's important about the way me and Emmett play together is that we never talk about it [laughs]. It's true! He's like the best guitar player. He's a master at making everything sound better. We've both worked together—but mostly separately—with our singer Will Oldham, and it was his suggestion that we should all go out together [without bass and drums] because it should be good. But really, we've never had to talk about it, and we just play. It's been a lot of fun.” So, when PG's Chris Kies recently connected with Sweeney and Kelly, they were providing a guitar backdrop for a headlining set fronted by Bonnie “Prince” Billy Oldham at Nashville's Mercy Lounge, supporting Sweeney and Billy's 2021 release, Superwolves. While the conversation with both does cover their spartan setups, the meat of the message is how gear is a tool for storytelling, humility, and liberation. Oh … but Kelly does reveal a Japanese gem that takes a guitar signal and reanimates it into anime speech-like phrases! [Brought to you by https://ddar.io/XSE.RR (D'Addario XS Electric Strings).]
Ty Segall - "Harmonizer" from the 2021 album Harmonizer on Drag City. Wildly-prolific West Coast artist Ty Segall returned with his latest LP Harmonizer in early August. (Physical formats will be released via Drag City in October.) The album was co-produced and co-mixed by Cooper Crain, at Segall's own Harmonizer Studios in Topanga, California. Segall's wife, Denée, contributed vocals, lyrics, and album art, and the Freedom Band—bassist Mikal Cronin, drummer and percussionist Charles Moothart, guitarist Emmett Kelly, and pianist Ben Boye— assist on instrumentation. Ty returns to Seattle on February 6th, 2022, at The Showbox. Check out today's Song of the Day below, and revisit last year's Live on KEXP at Home below that. Will and Anurag discuss new releases by Mikal Cronin, Kim Gordon, and Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds, plus random North American banter.
It should be no surprise to anyone that the latest album by The Muffs, No Holiday, is the feature record of this month’s new release episode. Even without the tragic death of leader Kim Shattuck, this episode was bound to feature a handful of tracks from this release. But there was definitely no doubt after tearfully reading bandmate Roy McDonald’s story on Shattuck’s last months in the LA Times, and her desire to finish what is ultimately the band’s final record. It’s truly remarkable that this record even was finished, let alone as great as it is. This episode also features great new tracks by the likes of Jeffrey Lewis, Mikal Cronin, Guided By Voices, Mark Lanegan, and so many more. There’s also a plethora of email submissions by up and coming acts such as Uncle, Reverse, Taking On Water, Teenage Bubblegums, and Tio Rico. Of course, there’s brand new Rum Bar releases by The Dirty Trucker’s Tom Baker and The Speedways. After listening, please go purchase those tracks you enjoy!

THE TOUGH SHITS "Late Bloomer" Burning In Paradise Burger Records (2019) https://burgerrecords.11spot.com/the-tough-shits-burning-in-paradise.html The Tough Shits are a rock and roll band from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Their unique sound is a sonic missive to their garage forefathers, without being strictly, just another scuzzy rock band. Their musical influences are informed of: The Rolling Stones, KISS, Sam Cooke & The Clash. Their stylistic influences come directly from bands similar to the New York Dolls. They have shared past bills with touring bands like Jay Reatard, Redd Kross, Mikal Cronin, Meatbodies and every good band that’s passed through Philly.Philadelphia's perennial champions of cult rock anonymity, The Tough Shits remain, through line up changes, life mismanagement, and general personal turmoil, a band of brothers. Forever walking the line between celebration and self-loathing, the juvenile and the genuine, they combat their cynicism with open hearted enthusiasm for writing and performing their offbeat songs. Operating under the belief that the odds are stacked ever too high against any hope of success, they long ago learned the onlytrue path is to follow their own erratic muse, and above all, to make each other laugh in the face of failure. Their new album Burning In Paradise peels back the surface and reveals new dimensions of feeling and 'sad magic.'The Tough Shits’ first new album in 8 years “Burning In Paradise” is out worldwide on Burger Records on March 22, 2019! “The Tough Shits are so half-assed about being a ‘successful’ band that it's almost heroic. Though they rarely play outside Philadelphia and they have the self-promotional instincts of a pile of bricks, they've amassed a small but fervent cult of admirers drawn in by their genius-level pop hooks and infectious attitude of not giving a single fuck in the whole world.” -Chicago Reader

This time we really mean it. After 227 shows, plus some reruns, this is the very last broadcast of Eclectic Kettle. Recorded live at the end of November, Simon and Ben are in the studio together along with a great many returning cast members and friends. Join us as we recount our favourite Kettle moments, play some of our favourite tracks and acts from the history of the show, reflect on this whole thing, and encourage you to support BFF.fm in our 2018 Fundraiser! This one is also going out on Christmas Day, so welcome to the first and last Eclectic Kettle Holiday Special, I suppose? Feel free to shake some sleigh bells over the recording. And this show marks the 5th Anniversary of Eclectic Kettle (which we think would've been December 20th.) 5 years! Who'd ever have thought. Thank you to everyone who supported the show, listened, came on as a guest, Tweeted some snark… Simon and I are incredibly grateful to all our friends and family and BFF.fm community who supported making the show.Settle down in your favourite, snug festive spot by the fire. Have yourself an extra helping of Christmas Pudding. And please, once more with feeling, bask in the chaotic joy of Eclectic Kettle number 228 of 228. The music in this episode is really great, the banter is pretty good. The randos who we put on the air with us are tremendously entertaining too. We only blow out the levels some of the time. It meant a lot to record this, and even editing it for rebroadcast brought back the feelings. I hope you enjoy listening to it again. We love you. Good night. Enjoying the show? Start by forgetting all you think you know. Every day is Christmas when you're an LA Garage scene musician, and the songs are presents you can't unwrap quickly enough: they tear through them with reckless abandon, and like musical easter eggs, there always seem to be more in waiting, right around the corner. That same fertile musical playground encouraged the inception of Cory Hanson, who cut his teeth backing linchpin acts like Ty Segall and Mikal Cronin, and the first couple of releases by his act—Wand—only cemented that association. So of course Hanson did something next that no one saw coming. He scrubbed his entire approach. When fans are used to you spitting out two fierce records a year, contemplating a new release to the tune of Plum comes as a surprise. A retooled lineup, thoughtful variances, and shared songwriting duties confounded expectations further. But when the sunlight hits needle on vinyl here, the results are, well, noticeable. Join us as we pull back the curtain. Some additional steps for you to take: Check out the video for Plum Check out the video for Bee Karma Buy This Week's Vinyl on Amazon A Few Minutes With [**Broken Bells** - The High Road][4] A Current Affair [**Phoebe Bridgers** - Motion Sickness][5]
On today's episode I talk to musician Cory Hanson. Originally from Los Angeles, Cory began playing music professionally with Mikal Cronin and the bands, together PANGEA and Meatbodies. In 2014 he formed Wand with his former art school classmates Lee Landey and Evan Burrows, and they've gone on to record four albums: Ganglion Reef, Golem, 1000 Days, and their latest Plum (the last two were released on the wonderful label Drag City!). Last year, Drag City also released Cory's solo album The Unborn Capitalist from Limbo. All of these terrific! This is the website for Beginnings, subscribe on iTunes, follow me on Twitter.
Big business has intervened in Sean and Hayes being able to do the show the way they want to so they get MIKAL CRONIN to join them and fight corporations with music. This episode is sponsored by MVMT Watches (www.mvmtwatches.com/hollywood) and ZipRecruiter (www.ziprecruiter.com/first).

A garage is a pretty comfortable place for Mikal Cronin. He's been making rock music with his buddies since high school, especially with his longtime friend and collaborator Ty Segall. As he tells Marc, it's always been a DIY affair. Plus, Patrick Stickles from Titus Andronicus returns to get Marc up to speed on his new rock opera. The year was 1985. Orwell’s postscript. Fitting then that a record emerged from a band so maligned originally that they took to stealing sets from opening acts, so full of angst that to this day they try to reposition remnants of tales of violence at early shows, and who then might have known the result. Despite the fact that it kinda sounds like it was recorded in a burned-out warehouse, this record, nevertheless, is the lynchpin between The Velvet Underground and the shoegaze movement of England in the early 90s. Beneath all of the circumstance, buried in the gauzy haze of proto-shoegaze, pop songs and hooks with undeniable charm. This week we cover a wide variety of topics, like the Brothers Reid, the confluence between bands we can’t seem to separate in our minds, and the stilted, occasionally simplistic takes shared in reviews of records that are, in retrospect, the foundations for entire movements or scenes, not — hey! — unlike this week’s record, The Jesus And Mary Chain offering PsychoCandy. Buy "PsychoCandy" from Amazon Also, tune in as we weigh the question of ‘How Deadpan is Deadpan Enough?’ (Answer: we’re not sure), the efficacy of giant drumsticks in our A Few Minutes With segment (starring Hall and Oates), and the hilarious by way of spot-on Mikal Cronin video Turn Around — which lampoons Natalie Imbrulia’s 1997 hit cover of Torn. Confused? Don’t be. Grab the edge of your seat and join us as we wander down (and wonder about) memory lane. Wish that Shane had been able to join us, as I’m certain that he’d have plenty to spill on this one…

In this very special episode of the Based on Nothing podcast I am joined in studio by repeat guest and friend of the show Kelsey Degnan. Near the end of the episode I realized that I have been doing this podcast for over a year and it becomes a joyous and celebratory affair. The episode begins with a prayer and a state of the podcast address. We take LIVE calls from Karl Germanovich from the band Howlish, New York based comedian Alisha Delp, (who is coming to us live from a life or death battle with a mosquito) Michael Morrison, (who has scorching hot takes on Mad Men and Taylor Swift) and Rob Moden (host of the Orphan Black Clone Cast on the Nerdist network!) Kelsey and I discuss Brand New and how she recently confronted part of the band Seether over their blatant rip off of the Brand New song ‘Daisy’, a lost episode of the Based on Nothing spinoff Where’s The Brand New Album? podcast, summer music like Hop Along and their wonderful new record, American Football, Yuck, Mikal Cronin, Rilo Kiley, Colleen Green, summer vacations, Disney World wishes and curses, Podcastaway the movie, the great Dancing Epidemic of 1518 which is my favorite thing to ever be talked about on this podcast, and finally we go through the new Brand New news. Sorry for the little popping sounds, but also fuck it. Thank you to everyone who has been on or listened to this podcast over the past year. New episodes coming all through June/all summer/until the end of time.

This week on ye olde podcast we’re strong with indignation, curmudgeon, and wonder. First up, Prince’s “surprise” show in Baltimore last Sunday was billed as a “Rally 4 Peace”, but with millions in potential monetary donations to be generated, and only a “portion” of the proceeds going to charity, should “good vibes” really count as currency? We resurrect our fan favorite “Prince is a dick” segment to investigate.Next up, tune in as we review new records from power-pop wunderkind Mikal Cronin and Montreal’s masterful Patrick Watson. Both albums are two of the mostly hotly anticipated albums of 2015, but do they deliver the goods?PLUS!!! Are you a Dylan Fan? Ryan Adams? How about just a great song? If the answer is yes “The Jester and the Queen” by Chicago based singer/songwriter PM Buys is the track for you! See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
En este episodio, Milton Barboza comparte tres canciones tan frescas que podrían estar de venta en la Central de Abastos: la introspección de Them Are Us Too, el hiphop etéreo de Kehlani (con Chance the Rapper) y la intensidad de Mikal Cronin.
Tom does The Best Show from Los Angeles with an all-star panel! Jon Daly curses a few times, Lisa Jane Persky talks about Bea Arthur, Nick Thorburn gives Tom a present, Mikal Cronin discusses his new album, Rebecca Sugar talks about why she hired Tom for STEVEN UNIVERSE and Ian Jones-Quartey talks about Cal Tech! A fun one! And a SLIGHT WARNING: there is some PG-13 language used in this one!
Mikal Cronin is a musician now based in Los Angeles, California! Last time he and Dave talked, Mikal was living in San Francisco, where he'd lived for a long time. Dave had him back on the show to discuss his feelings about his music and himself after recording his new album, MCIII. The last time they talked, Mikal was frustrated and despondent about making music, and worried he couldn't do it. Now that he's made a new (incredible) album, he and Dave revisit his feelings on creating again. They also discuss wasting time, and focusing, and wasting too much time to focus. They had fun. Mikal's great. Follow @MikalCronin on Twitter!
Hayes and Sean are coming to you LIVE from UCB-Sunset in Los Angeles with house band MIKAL CRONIN. The guys chat about their time at the #SNL40 celebration and help audience members make the movie of their dreams. Then, they welcome young actors BEN RODGERS, DC PIERSON, DOMINIC DIERKES, and ERIC APPEL to audition for the new voice of Hollywood Handbook ads sometimes.
This week on the podcast I’m talking about books partially read… Listen for a reading of two poems by Ellen Kennedy, an afterward written by Jonathan Evison who wrote The Revised Fundamentals of Caregiving, and shout outs to authors Joan Didion and Junot Diaz. If you like it when I talk about books you might also like listening to the smart lit-cast Literary Disco, hosted by former Boy Meets World kiddie crush Ryder Strong/Shawn Hunter. ——Songs: “Am I Wrong” (2014) by Mikal Cronin, “Soldier Baby of Mine” (1965) by the Ronettes, “A Picture Of Our Torn Up Praise” (2007) by Phosphorescent——shytrying.tumblr.com
Hayes and Sean start off the show talking about their love of French films with a French documentary crew in-studio and do a segment where they explore how different music can change the tone of a movie scene. Then, the guys bring in the first person signed to their record label, Mikal Cronin, for a special musical episode where they talk about Neil Young and Leonardo Da Vinci's adventures. Also, is Engineer Cody stealing cable from the Earwolf studio? Tune in to find out.
Our guests this week are Brad Stevens, Boyd Vico and Deanna Rooney. Brad and Boyd talk about writing for the White House Correspondence Dinner, their experience on the Howard Stern Show and other fun things like this knife mishap clip. Jonah Raydio will be in Portland, Oregon May 10 for the Bridgetown Comedy Festival with Lance Bangs, Hutch Harris from The Thermals and live music from Mikal Cronin. Learn more about your ad choices. Mikal is a wildly prolific songwriter and musician based in San Francisco, and also just about the sweetest man who ever lived. He and Dave talked growing up, and working hard, and procrastinating, and a fear of "never getting your shit together". Dave could relate. Also, Dave is more screwed up than Mikal. They figured that out.

[12/2/2019 note: When I uploaded this episode eight years ago, it contained an audio error that cut off the last several seconds. It has bugged me ever since. So, I went back a couple weeks ago and completely remixed, remastered, and recreated the episode from scratch. I got married a month ago, and these songs were the soundtrack of my wife and I's first year together. They will remind me of that time forever, and I am glad the episode is finally complete.]2011 is almost over, and oh my goodness where did the time go?! The past twelve months were filled with all kinds of good things for me on the life front, and much like last year, there were SO MANY crucial rock n' roll records released and a bunch of killer shows that damaged my eardrums even further. EPISODE #38 of Random Old Records cuts away all of the extra padding and somewhat clever soundbytes and presents an hour of my personal favorite songs of 2011 with no interruptions! You'll hear all the songs I've been raving about since January, including heavy hitters like "Gold Sneakers" by Wax Idols, "Weekend" by Smith Westerns, and "Into Black" by Blouse. You'll hear heavy-duty psychedelic blowouts from The Paperhead, Thee Oh Sees, and The People's Temple, and perfect pop from Dum Dum Girls, Colleen Green, and The Babies. Woah, is it really October already?! Judging by the clock at the bottom right of my computer screen and the flannel shirt wrapped around my torso, it must be. Where has all the time gone? It seems like April was only a few minutes ago, and now the year is damn near over. I've been to a bunch of shows, crossed a couple of folks off my live bucket list (New York Dolls, Wanda Jackson), and spent probably a few grand on records, and what do I have to show for it? Slightly more damaged eardrums and a whole buncha physical media that will be a real pain in the ass to lift if I ever move into a new place, I reckon. Seriously though, 2011 might have already topped 2010 as one of the best music years since the mid-90s, and it's not over yet!Random Old Records Podcast #36 is out now, and it's loaded with just over an hour of jams, starting off with the raging opening salvo from Let's Wrestle's new LP, "In Dreams Part II." It sounds so much like the aforementioned mid-90s that you'd swear that 15+ years of godawful over-produced mainstream rock didn't kill good music after all and that the kids really and truly are alright. The kids really ARE alright, even though their space phone zombie walks and Twitter posts suggest otherwise. Forget about the waves of whiny bedroom folk and trendy corporate "garage rock" wannabes, there's real and VITAL rock n' roll still being cranked out by the truckload all over the world. No better example can be found than the second track on this here podcast, a sizzling blast from the brand new 10" LP from smooth punk titans Bare Wires, who continue their unparalleled streak of insta-classic bangers with "Sweet Little Stranger." That nasty fuzz and snarling vocal might just lift you out of your plush computer chair, Mr. Internet cynic!Elsewhere, you'll hear the lead-off single from the Strange Boys' highly anticipated new LP out in a few weeks, which finds the Austin garage rockers moving even closer to that Exile On Main Street vibe, another perfect 80s pop jam from the new Dum Dum Girls album, some delightfully evil synth punk from Swedish noise terrorists Black Bug, a fuzzed-out Beach Boys homage from Moonhearts mainman Mikal Cronin's debut solo nod on Trouble In Mind, some obnoxious analog oscillations from California's Blasted Canyons, some dusty reverb rock from Texas teenagers Fungi Girls, and a catchy beach-pop latecomer from the former Mika Miko members in Bleached. Random Old Records #36 finishes up with 18 or so minutes of classic mid-90s indie rock from Material Issue, Hazel, The Spinanes, and Sebadoh, who I'll be glad to cross off that live show bucket list in a couple weeks. Bakesale was released 17 years ago, and if that's not enough to make a guy feel old, I don't know what does. In between the tracks, you’ll hear a series of spooky inserts from “Death Of A Doll,” an episode of Inner Sanctum Mysteries originally aired October 18th, 1948. Right in time for Halloween, it will send a chill up your back!Don't forget to SUBSCRIBE to Random Old Records via Apple Podcasts, Google Play, or RSS.
