March 27th: Andre Thomas Kills (2004) There are some cases in which you can watch as a person descends into a deeply dangerous mental state. One that might cost someone their life. On March 27th 2004 a man took the lives of 3 individuals. A man who, from the time he was a young boy, showed clear signs of a worsening mental state and became more and more dangerous as the years went by. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Andre_Thomas, https://www.tdcj.texas.gov/death_row/dr_info/thomasandre.html, https://www.texastribune.org/2023/03/07/texas-death-row-andre-thomas/, https://www.cbsnews.com/news/andre-thomas-execution-delayed-texas-death-row-inmate-cut-out-his-eyes/, https://www.texastribune.org/series/trouble-in-mind/, https://apnews.com/article/crime-sherman-houston-texas-70e9d83619c02b2e2e5b42dd007e38d9 Learn more about your ad choices. Live at Largo, it's LOVE AT LARGE. The Alan Rudolph movie that feels vaguely like Trouble in Mind, transplanted to a 1990s Portland, with an added hitchcock-ian "wrong man" story, that is also a screwball comedy, and Tom Berenger talks like Beetlejuice, and there's a cameo even more insane than Divine in TiM. So what did we think of it? Well, perhaps one of us was more into it than the other, but the only way to truly unlock that secret, you gotta listen to the dang episode you nonce! Singer/songwriter Bob Gibson was a defining figure in the folk music revival starting in the late 1950s, but a crushing dependence on heroin and other drugs sank his career, his marriage and many of his long-time friendships.Gibson — who wrote songs like “Abilene” and “There's a Meeting Here Tonight” that were performed by artists such as Peter, Paul and Mary, The Limeliters and Simon and Garfunkel, as well as The Byrds, The Smothers Brothers and others — hit rock bottom in the late '60s.The Road Down“I left the business in '66,” Gibson wrote in his autobiography, I Come for to Sing. “It seemed to me working in clubs, being on the road, being in show business and around musicians caused me to use drugs. I thought if I got away from that, everything would be fine.”To that end, he spent almost three years in a country hideaway with his young family trying to get clean, but ultimately, he wrote, the hiatus failed its mission. The early 1970s found Gibson relocating again, this time to the West Coast, commuting for occasional gigs in clubs in Chicago and Los Angeles. “I was just hanging in,” he wrote, “doing the same set of songs, and I wasn't writing or learning.”Enter ShelBut then he reconnected with an old friend — writer/artist Shel Silverstein — who helped “in jarring me out of this,” Gibson said. “Shel would come up there and we'd write songs.”Meanwhile, what he called “a classic music business snafu” torpedoed his last major label release, so in 1974 — re-energized by the songs he had written with Shel — Gibson started one of the country's first-ever artist-owned record companies. In those days, his new Legend Enterprises label was a novel approach to making records.Bob's Funky In The Country was its first release, recorded live at the legendary Amazingrace Coffeehouse in Evanston, Ill., near Chicago.Buoyed by a rave review in Billboard magazine, the album gave the fledgling label a fine start, but it was quickly undermined by Gibson himself: The first stop on the road to promote his new album was a few months in rehab. By the time Bob was ready to travel again, the momentum had moved on.The SongA highlight of that lovely album — “Two Nineteen Blues” — is built around Gibson's imaginative reworking of several long-standing blues motifs. His chorus (“I'm going down to the river / Gonna take along my rocking chair”) comes from well-known versions of “Trouble in Mind” as sung by everyone from folkie Cisco Houston to soulful Sam Cooke to country's Johnny Cash. And the song's hook (“Gonna lay my head down on some lonesome railroad line / And let the two-nineteen come along and pacify my mind”) has even deeper blues roots. No less an authority than the great Jelly Roll Morton said “Mamie's Blues” — from which the line comes — was “no doubt the first blues I heard in my life. Mamie Desdunes, this was her favorite blues. She hardly could play anything else more, but she really could play this number.”Desdunes (sometimes written Desdoumes) was a well-known singer and pianist in “The District,” as New Orleanians called the area now generally remembered as “Storyville.”What's in a Name?Blues historian Elijah Wald notes the old song's title is often given as “2:19 Blues,” as if referring to a train time; however, jazz historian Charles Edward Smith recalled Morton explaining that the 219 was the train that “took the gals out on the T&P (Texas and Pacific railroad) to the sporting houses on the Texas side of the circuit.”Despite all its lyrical borrowings from blues antiquity, “Two Nineteen Blues” is unmistakably a Bob Gibson creation. He brought to it a completely new melody and fresh lyrics brimming with his trademark sass and winking understatement. For example, Bob sealed the deal in a final verse that finds his antagonist in a small-town jail, where: I hit the judge and I run like hell And the sheriff he's still askin' ‘round ‘bout me.Our Take on the TuneFor folks who know The Flood only from its studio albums, this is the first tune they may have ever heard from the band. That's because this rollicking composition was what the guys played on the opening track of their very first commercial album nearly a quarter of a century ago now. And speaking of names, because of a design error, the song was erroneously listed on that inaugural album as “Rocking Chair,” a name it has retained in the Floodisphere ever since.A lot changes in a band over the decades, but good old tunes — under whatever name — are like cherished letters from home. Here's a version from a recent rehearsal. This is a public episode. If you would like to discuss this with other subscribers or get access to bonus episodes, visit 1937flood.substack.com

The indie filmmaker Alan Rudolph ("Choose Me", "Trouble in Mind") makes his first appearance on the podcast. His 1999 film, originally written for his mentor Bob Altman to direct but ended up in his hands some years later. That film is"Breakfast of Champions" and, after 25 years, is returning to theaters. The film was adapted from the unadaptable novel by Kurt Vonnegut, and stars Bruce Willis and Albert Finney. In this special conversation, Rudolph reflects on his year as Altman's assistant director and his career at large. "Breakfast of Champions" tells the story of a fictional town in the mid west that is home to a group of idiosyncratic and slightly neurotic characters. Dwayne Hoover is a wealthy car dealership owner that's on the brink of suicide and is losing touch with reality. https://youtu.be/SaOQbpBJ6t0 Carrie Rickey is a film journalist and author. Her new book is a biography of the French New Wave filmmaker Agnès Varda called "A Complicated Passion: The Life and Work of Agnès Varda" (W.W. Norton, 2024). Over the course of her sixty-five-year career, the longest of any female filmmaker, Agnès Varda (1928–2019) wrote and directed some of the most acclaimed films of her era, from her tour de force "Cléo from 5 to 7" (1962), a classic of modernist cinema, to the beloved documentary "The Gleaners and I" (2000) four decades later. She helped to define the French New Wave, inspired an entire generation of filmmakers, and was recognized with major awards at the Cannes, Berlin, and Venice Film Festivals, as well as an honorary Oscar at the Academy Awards. In this lively biography, former Philadelphia Inquirer film critic Carrie Rickey explores the complicated passions that informed Varda's charmed life and indelible work. Rickey traces Varda's three remarkable careers—as still photographer, as filmmaker, and as installation artist. She explains how Varda was a pioneer in blurring the lines between documentary and fiction, using the latest digital technology and carving a path for women in the movie industry. She demonstrates how Varda was years ahead of her time in addressing sexism, abortion, labor exploitation, immigrant rights, and race relations with candor and incisiveness. https://youtu.be/DwECtUfablw
Grammy-winning Southern roots rock duo Larkin Poe (sisters Rebecca and Megan Lovell) join us to chat about their creative process and their exciting forthcoming album, Bloom. PART ONE:'Tis the season! Scott and Paul chat about the classic Halloween songs. Is it time for a modern day resurgence of spooky music?PART TWO:Our in-depth conversation with sisters Rebecca and Megan Lovell, known to the world as duo Larkin PoeABOUT LARKIN POE:Blues-based rock duo Larkin Poe is comprised of multi-instrumentalist sisters Rebecca and Megan Lovell. The Georgia natives began their career as an acoustic trio with their sister Jessica in 2004. That year they appeared on A Prairie Home Companion and won the Prairie Home National Teen Talent Competition. In 2008, the Lovell Sisters' song “Distance” won the John Lennon Songwriting Contest grand prize in the country genre. That same year, their song “Time to Grow” received honorable mention in the International Songwriting Competition. After an impressive indie career that included two albums, as well as appearances at Bonaroo and the Grand Ole Opry, the Lovell Sisters disbanded. Rebecca and Megan reemerged as a duo pursuing a new sound that was steeped in the electric blues rather than acoustic and bluegrass music. Between 2010 and 2013 they released five indie EPs, two collaborative albums, and a live DVD. They released their debut album as a duo in 2014 and gained attention with the standout track “Don't.” In 2016 they reissued their debut studio album under the title Reskinned, which included new tracks such as “Trouble in Mind.” With the 2017 album Peach, Megan and Rebecca took the production reigns and continued to build a following. The next year's Venom & Faith reached #1 on Billboard's Blues Album chart and earned the sisters their first Grammy nomination. Their sixth studio album, Blood Harmony, garnered another Grammy nomination, which resulted in their first Grammy win in 2024. Larkin Poe's latest album is called Bloom and is set for release in January of 2025.

In times of trouble in mind and spirit, the Bible doesn't usually explain to us our situation or even the details of God's plans. The Bible does tell us, however, continually who God is. And to trust Him. Namely, that He is the way. He is truth. He is life.
Emilio, Madeline, and Julian welcome their first guest Anthony Hollock for a “Close-Up” on the life and work of the one and only Divine. For the final episode in their “Perceptions of Sanity” cycle, the group look at Divine's career-spanning collaboration with John Waters with a focus on Multiple Maniacs, Pink Flamingos, Polyester, and Hairspray, while making some stops along the way to discuss turns in non-Waters films such as Lust in the Dust and Trouble in Mind. Hear them trace the arc of Divine's initial bombast to later subtlety, with myriad reactions along the way. Plus, why does Anthony feel like he's lived in a John Waters movie? What record does Pink Flamingos set for Julian? And who in the group was a “hair-hopper”?

“The idea of ‘chasing the panther' is that the panther serves as this metaphor for art, and so it's something that you chase after even thought it is in some ways very, very dangerous, and I think Carolyn would say that is one hundred percent the story of her life, chasing art.” That's writer and filmmaker Gregory Collins explaining the title to his very first collaboration, Chasing the Panther: Adventures & Misadventures of a Cinematic Life, written with the noted independent film producer Carolyn Pfeiffer, who as a young woman found herself swept up in the roiling waters of the French New Wave and Italian film scenes of the '60s and '70s. Together, Gregory and Carolyn have written a vibrant coming-of-age memoir telling the origin story of one of the film industry's first female executives—a woman once dubbed a Hollywood “mini-mogul” by The Wall Street Journal. As the head of Alive Films and Island Alive, Carolyn produced a number of influential films, including “Stop Making Sense,” “Koyaanisqatsi”, “Kiss of the Spider Woman,” “Trouble in Mind,” “Far North,” and “The Whales of August.” An accomplished screenwriter and producer in his own right, Gregory's films have premiered at the Malawi International Film Festival, and at the Sarasota and Seattle film festivals. He has taught producing and screenwriting at Penn State University and has served as the director of development of Burnt Orange Productions, at the University of Texas at Austin. Join us at the front end of this episode, as Carolyn and Gregory discuss how they worked together, and share some wild stories about Carolyn's experience on the frontlines of French New Wave cinema, Fellini's Rome, and Swinging London—and then stay with us after the break, as we visit with Gregory and examine the ways he has shifted his focus as a writer from the screen to the page. On this episode of the Caught Red Pawdcast, Jesse tells the story of Andre Thomas. Since a young age, he had voices in his head that ultimately drove him to do the most horrific act. The main question throughout his trial was his competency. "There are times when the mind is dealt such a blow that it hides itself in insanity." NOTE: This interview was recorded in April 2022, so all mentions of time reflect that period. Today, I am so happy to annnounce my interview with veteran actor Simon Jones, star of The Real Thing, Trouble in Mind, Waiting in the Wings, The Gilded Age, and so many more shows. Tune in today to hear some of the stories of his long career, including: a murderous slip-of-the-tongue by Angela Lansbury, the role that Lauren Bacall refused to play correctly, an ungracious invite from Joan Collins, his family connection to Daniel Craig, the rivalry between Rex Harrison and Claudette Colbert, how he knocked his teeth out during My Fair Lady, an alcoholic backstage ritual during Farinelli and the King, the young actor that Lawrence Olivier wanted to punch, the oddness of rehearsing with Nicol Williamson, a cryptic answer from Tom Stoppard, running the theater company TACT, the many reunions involved in The Gilded Age, his strange experience with Covid, and so much more. You won't want to miss this episode with a delightfully funny gentleman of the theater.
What makes theatre such an important part of building connections -- both in school and out of school? And how can theatre help foster imagination and self-awareness as part of a strong STEM/STEAM program? Meet Selah Theatre Project's Founding Artistic Director, LaTasha Do'zia. Latasha is a visionary artist and entrepreneur who uses the arts to help build a stronger, kinder, and more creative community. As a teaching artist, LaTasha has used theatre as a tool for teacher development, private business communication, counselor training, mental health intervention, and social justice movements. In 2021, LaTasha was appointed by the Governor to serve on the Virginia Commission for the Arts,. It has been my privilege to lead professional development workshops on multicultural picture books and STEAM connections with LaTasha. We are co-teaching at Shenandoah University, where we explore bringing multicultural picture books to life. Full show notes.[02:07] We talk about LaTasha's personal adventure in learning and how she reached a place where she owns and operates her own theatre company. "I discovered theater when I was six years old," LaTasha says. "My mother said that I was too dramatic and I needed to put that energy somewhere." We've said this before on the podcast, but books have an amazing power to provide windows, mirrors, and sliding glass doors for children (and adults) as they navigate establishing their identities and figuring out who they are in the world. If you haven't read it yet, I strongly encourage you to check out Dr. Rudine Sims Bishop's seminal work on the subject. At [04:27], we learn that LaTasha's favorite book from her childhood that also served as a mirror was John Steptoe's Mufaro's Beautiful Daughters. We delve deeper into the creation of LaTasha's Selah Theatre Project, which she started 11 years ago. LaTasha offers a sneak peek at the new season, which includes What the Consitution Means to Me, Trouble In Mind, Macbeth, Akeelah and the Bee, and Guess Who's Coming to Dinner? [06:51] "We do 8 productions a year and it's a mixture of youth theater, teen theater, and community theater," she says. "We focus on diverse voices as much as possible. And diversity comes in so many ways. It's not just racial, it's also socioeconomic, it's also learning based. There's so much diversity in our group and we're very proud of that. We're small but mighty."[16:58] I have been fortunate enough to work with LaTasha to help teachers and librarians unlock strategies for connecting multicultural picture books with STEAM for more engaged learning. Writing for the Los Angeles Review Erica Charis-Molling says this of Rancourt's Brocken Spectre: “Much like the phenomenon after which the collection is titled, the search for answers is part ghost hunt and part investigation of an illusion. Through the eyes of these post-AIDS-epidemic poems, we thoughtfully look at the ways the virus is both a thing of the past and very much present.” Read the whole review here. If you want to know more about what Tonya Harding (who was banned for life from the US Figure Skating Association) is up to these days, here's a pretty great article. Short answer: she's chopping wood, sending Cameo vids, and raising a son with her 3rd husband. Watch Harding become the 2nd woman (and first American) to land a triple axel in competition (1991 US Nationals) here around the 0:50 mark.
