Worldy tries its best to stay topical and comment on current events with music - if that sounds cringe, meh - don't worry we don't really pull it off. The records spin. It's raging wildfires in Los Angeles, California and our hearts break for the tragedy - there and also everywhere in the world suffering is ongoing without help or aid. We do what we can and play some 60's folk rock from when LA was a different place - where Laurel Canyon was an artist refuge, at least until Charles Manson. I also have some new Japanese comps - ‘Fishmans' and ‘Pacific Breeze 3 from label favs Light In The Attic' and Dom comes to the Cafe Atlas Obscura armed with new releases. Un trabajo a destajo en donde aprendió el funcionamiento de la industria de la música comercial, co-escribiendo decenas de canciones de todos los estilos, las cuales eran grabadas por bandas ficticias de estudio o artistas emergentes que aspiraban a convertirse en estrellas del pop.(Foto del podcast por Matthew Kloss)Playlist (Todas las canciones de “Why don’t you smile now” salvo donde indicado;(sintonía) LOU REED “I’m waiting for the man (demo mayo 1965)” (Words and Music)THE PRIMITIVES “Sneaky Pete”LOU REED “Merry-go-round” (single 1962)SPONGY and THE DOLLS “Really really really really really love”THE ALL NIGHT WORKERS “Why don’t you smile”ROBERTHA WILLIAMS “Tell mamma not to cry”THE J BROTHERS “Ya running, but I’ll getcha”BEVERLEY ANN “We got trouble”RONNIE DICKERSON “Oh no don’t do it”THE PRIMITIVES “The Ostrich”THE ROUGHNECKS “You’re driving me insane”THE BEACHNUTS “Cycle Annie”JEANNIE LARIMORE “Johnny won’t surf no more”THE SURFSIDES “Little Deuce Coupe”THE HOLLYWOODS “Teardrops in the sand”THE HI-LIFES “Soul City”RONNIE DICKERSON “What about me”THE BEACHNUTS “Sad, lonely, orphan boy”THE HI-LIFES “I’m gonna fight”LOU REED “Heroin” (demo mayo 1965)” (Words and Music)Escuchar audio

Playlist;LOU REED “The power of the heart” (2008)KEITH RICHARDS “I’m waiting for the man” (The power of the heart; a tribute to Lou Reed)STEVE HUNTER “Sweet Jane” (The deacon speaks, 2024)LUNA “Satellite of love” (single 2023)LOU REED “Foot of pride” (live 1992)Versión y Original; BOB DYLAN “Foot of pride” (inédito 1983)JOHNNY CASINO “Eight miles high” (adelanto del álbum “High Stone”)THE BEVIS FROND “Focus on nature” (Focus on nature, 2024)EELS “Time” (adelanto del álbum “Eels time!”)THE LIMBOOS “Hangin’ up” (Off the loop, 2024)Escuchar audio
Not to be outdone by Elon Musk funding Gina Carano's lawsuit against Disney, Peter Thiel has offered to back my litigation against Light In The Attic charging full price for a bent-corner copy of Les Rallizes Denudes' ‘Cittá 93'. It seems a little unnecessary, to be honest. If not the equivalent of blowing up an ant hill with a nuclear bomb, than at the very least exploding a gopher hole with a GBU-43/B Massive Ordnance Air Blast. Maybe you don't think that's a helpful analogy and I can't help but be curious what sort of weaponry credentials you possess that are SO MUCH MORE impressive than mine. This is the sort of dispute that can only be settled by someone with more money than god trying to sue you out of existence over a slight real or imagined (in this case, absolutely imagined but I've got a long list of real ones, too).
Romi's birthday episode for 2024 is a compilation album of old songs covered by (somewhat) new musicians. From the good, the bad, and the Iggy, what they all have in common is that they're under the Light in the Attic record label. So let's dive into "Light in the Attic & Friends"! Episode 111 Before and After Ambient, Part 2 Playlist Midori Takada, “Mr. Henri Rousseau's Dream” from Through The Looking Glass (1983 RCA Red Seal). 高田みどり (Midori Takada) is a Japanese composer and percussionist. She was a key figure in the Japanese ambient movement of the 1980s. Composed, performed, produced, Marimba, Gong, Cowbell, Recorder, Wood Bell, Ocarina, Tam-tam, Midori Takada. She performed all of the instruments on this album. The album was not immediately popular but seeded the nascent ambient movement that was growing in Japan at the time. Midori Takada, “Trompe-l'œil” from Through The Looking Glass (1983 RCA Red Seal). 高田みどり (Midori Takada) is a Japanese composer and percussionist. She was a key figure in the Japanese ambient movement of the 1980s. Composed, performed, produced, Marimba, Gong, Cowbell, Recorder, Wood and clay Bells, Ocarina, Tam-tam, Cola Bottle, Reed Organ, Midori Takada. She performed all of the instruments on this album. Brian Eno and Harold Budd, “Their Memories” from The Pearl (1984 Editions EG). Composed by Brian Eno, Harold Budd; produced by Brian Eno and Daniel Lanois. David Behrman, “Interspecies Smalltalk Scene 2” (1984) from Leapday Night (1987 Lovely Music). Composed, produced, and computers by David Behrman; violin, Takehisa Kosugi. "Interspecies Smalltalk" (1984) is an interactive piece originally commissioned by the Cunningham Dance Company. Yutaka Hirose, “Light Which Shakes Quietly” from Nova+4 (2019 WRWTFWW Records). Bonus track on this reissued album that dates from 1986. Composed , Arranged and Computer by, Yutaka Hirose; Synthesizer, Jun Tohyama. Takashi Kokubo, “A Dream Sails Out To Sea - Scene 3” (2019 Light In The Attic). Originally released in 1987, this track was part of the new wave of Japanese ambient music. By that time, Kokubo was already reknown for his synthesizer skills on a part with Isao Tomita. He turned to sound design and ambient music and has been instrumental in addition to creating such sounds as the nationally-used mobile phone earthquake alert and credit card payment jingles. Yoichiro Yoshikawa, “Nube” from Cyprus (1988 Eastworld). Original sound track of Japanese TV program. Yoshikawa was already a reliable session musician when he acquired one of the first Phophet-5 synthesizers in Japan. He quickly became a go-to composer for television and other purposes, such as soundscapes for museum exhibitions. Tetsu Inoue, “Low of Vibration” from Ambiant Otaku (1994 Fax +49-69/450464). Before I met Tetsu around the year 2000, I was fascinated by music such as this which had all of the elements of ambient music—slow and forming harmonies, spatial rhythms rather than beats, and a sustained energy throughout—without sounding at all like something out of an Eno production. Produced and performed by Tetsu Inoue. Kenji Kawai, “Ghostdive” from Ghost in the Shell (Original Soundtrack) (1995 RCA). An ambient work from the popular movie soundtrack.Composed, Performed, Produced, Arranged, Keyboards, Instruments, Kenji Kawai; synthesizer, Hironori Houki. Analog Tone Engineering and Realization, Recordings Of The Dead, Shortwave, Field Recordings Made During Periods Of Highly-charged Paranormal Activity, Korg MS 10, Korg MS 20, Korg MS 50, Roland System 100 Synthesizers, Home Built Analog Synthesizers, Tape, Loops, Chris Troy; Digital Audio Graphs, Granular Synthesis, Microwave Communications, Psycho-acoustics, Tape, Loops Otari MX 5050 loops, Rod Modell. Experimental Audio Research, “Automatic Music (For Oscillator, Ring Modulator & Filter Clusters)” from Pestrepeller (1999 Ochre Records). UK release, limited to 1000 copies. Engineer, Serge Modular Music System, Sonic Boom (Pete Kember). Some interesting modular synthesizer ambience. John Foxx and Harold Budd, “Raindust” from Translucence + Drift Music (2003 Edsel Records). Composed, produced, and performed by Harold Budd, John Foxx. John Foxx and Harold Budd, “Some Way Through All the Cities” from Translucence + Drift Music (2003 Edsel Records). Composed, produced, and performed by Harold Budd, John Foxx. Pete Namlook, Tetsu Inoue, “Ethereal Being” from 2350 Broadway 4 (2007 Fax +49-69/450464). Composed, produced, and performed by Pete Namlook, Tetsu Inoue. Recorded at Bretton Hall, New York and Klanglobor Hödeshof. Tetsu was an endless collaborator. Here he and the wondrous Pete Namlook wove some ambient magic. Tetsu Inoue, “Kaze” from Inland (2007 Fax +49-69/450464). Written, performed and produced by Tetsu Inoue. This was his post-glitch faze, which brought together, strangely enough, element so his earlier ambient work and glitch music for computers. Masuko Shinji, “Woven Music for Blue Steppe” from Woven Music (2011 Jagjaguwar). All music, vocals and guitar, 増子真二 (Shinji Masuko). This is a project by Masuko, who sometimes works with the Boredoms. It has a characteristic high but sustained energy level that flirts with the outer reaches of the ambient music concept. Caroline Park, “Grain 5” from Grain (2011 Private Chronology). This is a cassette release by Park, often known her for generative composition work and electronic improvisations based on parameters that she defines. Recorded, performed, and mixed between May 2010 and January 2011 in Los Angeles and Boston. Sarah Davachi, “First Cadence” from Antiphonals (2021 Late Music). Composed, Recorded, Performed, Mellotron (bass flute, recorder, oboe), Tape Echo, Sarah Davachi. A recent ambient work by this contemporary experimenter. In the background: An example of ambient music from the program Droneo by Henry Lowengard, which produces self-generating ambient music on a smart phone. “Droneo 1.5 vanDelay and Ape,” (5:25). Opening and closing sequences voiced by Anne Benkovitz. Additional opening, closing, and other incidental music by Thom Holmes. See my companion blog that I write for the Bob Moog Foundation. Welcome back to Artbeat Radio! On this episode of Art Beat Radio, EPI student Greco will interview drama instructor Imani. Imani and her students are currently working on a movie based on Shel Silverstein's books "Where the Sidewalk Ends" and "A Light in the Attic," so we will hear Greco ask Imani questions about this process. Thanks for listening and tune in next time! For more information about our organization, please visit our website www.ableartswork.org Audio Transcription: (Please listen on Podomatic or Spotify to view the full transcript) *Intro music by Artbeat Radio staff* Music, stories, and more! You're listening to Artbeat Radio, a program of Able ARTS Work. Morgan: On this episode of Art Beat Radio, EPI student Greco will be asking drama instructor Imani some questions about a movie the EPI students are working on. Greco (asking about the music choice in the movie/play): Imani, tell me about the music and play on the computer Imani: So, some of the songs that I picked were like songs that either made me feel a certain type of way, or I knew off the top of my head that they would be good songs that went with the action in the movie. Um, some of them were my favorite songs. And then you'd also be very surprised with key words like happy, or something angry, or whatever what google or YouTube will bring up for you. So, I found this playlist of 79 instrumentals that everyone knows but no one knows the name of and then I went through all of them and there was a lot of songs on there that just made me laugh or like, provided some kind of reaction and when I started watching some of our edits back I thought that they would be good matches for our videos. So there's a lot of those that I picked. Greco (asking about the Silverstein poems chosen for the movie/play): Imani, what do you like about the poem? Imani: They were always poems that really resonated with me as a kid, and I thought they would be a good jumping off point with introducing our clients to acting stuff. So I, I felt like they were important because they resonate and they're written for children, but they also resonate with adults as well. They have a lot of different stories and meanings to them, and I thought that that could be a cool way to create a show. Greco (asking about the poems that were chosen to be a part of the movie/play): How did we chose those poems? Imani: We kind of just went one by one through each poem. I asked everyone: how did they feel about it; did it create a reaction for them; did it bore them; did it make them excited. And that's kind of how we did our selection process and ended up with 18 to 20 that we have. We wanted to make sure that we had a collection of ones that brighten people's spirits but also like, made people think as well. Which I really expressed was important to me that the students do because, you know, it's always great to have like a happy thing, or you know, sometimes a sad thing, but I also want to have things in there that make people think or that make people question like life and even the show. And so, we made sure to incorporate all of those things. Greco (asking about Imani's experience with filming and how she taught her students about filming): How did you learn to film; how did you teach me and my peers? Imani: Honestly I kinda just want to laugh and cry both at that question. Um, I'm an actress so like, I know what it's like to be on set and film movies; the only situation is I'm used to being in front of the camera and not behind it. So this whole process has been a learning experience for me and my students. We've both been kind of in the trenches together just like, figuring things out as we go, and they've had a chance to learn how to do things with the camera and so have I simultaneously. So, we're just, we're sticking it out together right now. Greco (asking what was the most fun part of this whole process of creating the movie): What is the most fun for you? Imani: I think watching my students like open up and getting to portray different characters. I know a lot of people were really nervous when they first started this process and didn't really trust me or trust how it was gonna go, and thought that it would be really hard. But everybody seems to be having a lot of fun as they go along, and they like getting the chance to play different people. And they've had a pretty fun reaction to seeing themselves on screen. So, I like being able to give them that. Greco & Morgan: Thank you ladies and gentlemen from EPI! *Outro music by Artbeat Radio staff* We hope you enjoyed this episode of Artbeat Radio. There's Nothing That Cannot Beat Me", 没有打不倒我的东西,真是个让人哑然失笑的标题。除此之外,喜欢考古冷门音乐的厂牌 Light In The Attic 再次出现在节目中。这张收集夏威夷冷门迷幻民谣的合辑 "From These Shores", 也为我们呈现了这片岛屿在旅游风情之外的模样。 曲目单: (01:14) Beat Happening - Indian Summer (04:59) Enjoyable Listens - Lust (07:47) NoSo - Parasites (13:41) 表情银行 MimikBanka - 今夜,开窗通风 (17:48) Glockenwise - Dia feliz (21:36) 坂本慎太郎 - Like A Fable (26:01) Denny Guy - Say You'll Be With Me (30:01) Alice Wise - Kaimu Sun (33:51) Saya Gray - IF THERE'S NO SEAT IN THE SKY (WILL YOU FORGIVE ME___) (38:24) Bill Ryder-Jones - And Then There's You (42:51) Super Napkin - Nothing's Wrong It's Always Wrong (50:27) The Brkn Record - Break the Chains (52:57) Shay Hazan - Remove the Talk (56:25) Ava Rocha - Patrya → 选曲/撰稿/配音/制作/包装:方舟 → 主题音乐:Yu Su → 题图作者:Matt Moloney, 来自 Unsplash → 题图版式:六花 → 私信/合作联络: 微博/网易云/小宇宙/汽水儿 @线性方舟 → Key Change 随便听歌的分号《KC Jukebox》 → 《周末变奏》WX听友群敲门群主:aharddaysnight

If you're a dreamer, a wisher, a liar, a magic bean buyer, or you just hate doing dishes and taking the garbage out, you'll surely find something to relate to in our episode on celebrated author, illustrator, poet, and all-around Renaissance Man Shel Silverstein. Though WHERE THE SIDEWALK ENDS was first published in 1974, long before we were even born, Silverstein's groundbreaking poetry collection was a staple in classrooms, on library shelves, and at bedtime throughout our childhoods, along with later volumes A LIGHT IN THE ATTIC and FALLING UP. Award-winning author Elissa Brent Weissman joins us for a look at how writing for young readers has changed in the decades since we were young readers ourselves. Then we discuss Uncle Shelby's salacious origins (far outside the realm of children's fiction) and have a heated debate about what his massively popular children's book THE GIVING TREE is really about. Finally, we dive back into Silverstein's poetry to share which pieces still strike a chord with us. Revisit Hungry Kid Island, get reacquainted with Ridiculous Rose, and fire up the Homework Machine one last time, because we've got some flax golden tales to spin in the latest episode of When We Were Young — the only podcast that 10 out of 10 tree stumps agree makes them happy. for this week's episode, i attempt (and fail) to get to the bottom of why John Salley's searing 2011 interview with Ed Asner for the latter's inexplicably short-lived "Game On!" series is not mentioned in either thespian (or in Saley's case, thespian-basketball player's) Wikipedia entry. Even stranger, "Game On!" is not currently available via any streaming service. Shouldn't there be streaming provider devoted to this sort of thing, kind of like Light In The Attic? Maybe they could take this up — it would surely reach a more savvy audience than the Black Angels covering Roky Erickson. I don't know if this is a million dollar idea, but it's absolutely a thousand dollar idea and who amongst us couldn't use an extra thousand dollars. There's some music this week as well, mostly because John Salley's interviews are pretty short. STAND BACK AND LEARN, DAVID SUSSKIND.
Frederik - Se Jokin Minulla On (1975) The Locomotion in Finnish. Alice Babs - Been To Canaan (1973) Pretty Purdie and the Playboys - You've Got A Friend (1971) Carole King - Child of Mine (1970) Design - I Feel The Earth Move (1973) The City - Now That Everything's Been Said (1968) From the great Light In The Attic website: By the mid-‘60s, King's marriage to Gerry Goffin, with whom she'd written many of those wonderful hits, had hit the rocks. A divorce loomed, and King all but retired to raise their two daughters. She headed west to Laurel Canyon in ‘67, taking the children with her, and made the previously unlikely move of joining a progressive folk-rock band. King formed The City with future husband Charles Larkey on bass and Danny Kortchmar on guitar and vocals. With King on piano and vocals, they created a folk-rock sound that pre-empted the singer-songwriter boom of the ‘70s. Produced by Lou Adler and featuring Jimmy Gordon on drums, The City's sound is deep and soulful, imperfect but passionate. And the songs, with King writing or co-writing all but one, are as exceptional as you'd expect and as widely covered as her factory work. “Now That Everything's Been Said” was a hit for American Spring [Ed: That was the band that Brian Wilson produced, featuring his wife Marylin and his affair d'couer, his sister-in-law Diane.], “A Man Without A Dream” was tackled by The Monkees, and “Hi-De-Ho (That Old Sweet Roll)” was a hit for Blood, Sweat & Tears. Central to the album's appeal is King's own stirring reading of her track “Wasn't Born To Follow,” covered masterfully by The Byrds for the Easy Rider soundtrack. King had been used to a life on the sidelines, and her stage fright left the trio unable to tour the LP which adversely affected their fortunes. That, plus some behind-the-scenes distribution problems, meant the album was quickly deleted, and it remained so for the next thirty years–partly at King's request. Even so, its failure was a surprise to those concerned. “I was 26 when Now That Everything's Been Said was released in 1968,” King says of the album. “[We] expected it to zoom to the top of the charts within, at most, a few weeks. Individually and together, we optimistically imagined the album's success as if it had already happened. Danny and Charlie kept telling each other, 'It's a great album. The City is gonna be Number 1 with a bullet!'" Frances Yip - I Feel The Earth Move (1973) The Isleys - It's Too Late (1972) From one of my favorite pages, Wilson and Alroy's Record Reviews: Their review of Brother, Brother, Brother (two stars out of five) This is the kind of thing you can do when you own your record company: the Isleys turn over half the running time to three Carole King covers ("Brother Brother," her then-current hit "Sweet Seasons," and a ten-minute version of "It's Too Late"). All of which are calming and pretty but not particularly moving, similar in style to Givin' It Back but not quite as rough. Those numbers are complemented by some funkier tunes more reminiscent of Get Into Something, including the single "Pop That Thang," "Love Put Me On The Corner," and the propulsive "Work To Do." More than anything, this is transitional, pointing out the direction that was to pay off far better commercially and artistically starting with the next studio album. The younger crop of Isleys played most of the instruments again but still received no producing or arranging credits. Carol Burnett - It's Too Late (1972) Jerry Butler - So Far Away (1972) Daffi Von Cramer - Locomotion (1972) Lone Kellerman - Kom An Baby (1977) Mike James Kirkland - It's Too Late (1973) Nora Aunor - Sweet Seasons (1972) Known as "The Grand Dame of Philippine Cinema" for her contribution to the Philippine film industry. Aunor has released more than 360 singles and recorded more than 200 songs and over 50 albums. She has notched more than 30 gold singles and with an estimated gross sales of one million units, Nora's cover of "Pearly Shells" (1971) is one of the biggest-selling singles in the Philippines. Due to a botched cosmetic surgery in Japan while endorsing a cosmetic surgery clinic based in Shinagawa and Makati, her vocal cords were damaged and she cannot sing due to paralysis of her left vocal cords. Peter Nero - Jazzman (1975) Rita Coolidge - One Fine Day (1979) Carole King - Pierre (1975) Marlena Shaw - So Far Away (1972) Vikki Carr - So Far Away (1971) Carpenters - One Fine Day (1973) The City - Snow Queen (1968) The City - I Wasn't Born to Follow (1968) The Counts - Jazzman (1974) The Lettermen - You Make Me Feel Like A Natural Man (1970) Tiiti - Sata Kettaa (1979) Carole King - Time Gone By (1979) The Anita Kerr Singers - You've Got A Friend (1973) Stanislaw Sojka - You've Got A Friend (1979)

We’re back. The weather is beginning to turn. We’re almost there. Welcome to the September edition of the Transmissions podcast. On this episode, we sit down with three legends of independent music: psychedelic singer/songwriter Robyn Hitchcock, Giant Sand leader Howe Gelb, and Steve Wynn of the Dream Syndicate. Since emerging in the ‘80s, they’ve amassed incredible catalogs, and they’re all still making vital and poetic records. We spoke earlier this month at HOCO Fest, a multi-day festival in Tucson, Arizona. Sitting down at the KXCI studio at Hotel Congress, the three riffed on their years making music, how their sounds have evolved over the years, and what a lifelong commitment to making art looks like. But first, our conversation with Matt Sullivan of Light in the Attic Records, one of our longtime favorite reissue labels. We spoke live at Gold Diggers in East Hollywood as part of our Talk Show series – a set of live conversations centered around the worlds of music, art, film and beyond. LITA has released records by Rodriguez, Betty Davis, Lee Hazlewood, Jim Sullivan, Serge Gainsbourg, and has launched expansive archives like the Native North America and Japan Archival projects. How did Light in the Attic get started? Live on stage at Gold Diggers, Sullivan explained it all.
On this episode of the Light In The Attic podcast we visit the offices of Mojo Magazine in London, UK, to chat with Jenny Bulley (Reviews Editor), Ian Harrison (News Section & Back Section, Buried Treasure), Danny Eccleston (Senior Editor), and John Mulvey (Editor). Since 1995, Mojo Magazine has been a constant in the lives of music fans the world over. In the pre-internet days, we found ourselves driving around our home cities, going form news stand to news stand to find the latest issue. So many incredible reissues, new albums and new artists were discovered in these hallowed volumes. Back issues still bear repeated readings and are coveted till this day (the photo is just a portion of Matt Sullivan's collection). It was an immense pleasure to sit down with them and ask them about the history of the magazine, how issues are put together, as well as what they're currently listening too. Produced and Recorded by Matt Sullivan Edited and Mixed by Patrick McCarthy Learn more about Mojo Magazine and subscriber here.
Sometimes Random Old Records takes a lot of work to put together, but this one fell together smooth and easy. I guess it makes sense that the general vibe of EPISODE #67 is nice and laid back as well, coasting on twanging guitars, harmonies both cheesy and transcendent, pounding pianos, burbling electric organs, lots of woah oh's, shout-outs to comic book characters, and real-deal emotions. That's just a long-winded way to say that you will hear classic pub rock from Brinsley Schwarz and Eggs Over Easy, new excitement from Greg Ashley, The Golden Boys, and Lavender Flu, and a cherry-picked selection of raw and rare private-press soul and psychedelic rock from some amazing compilations. Tune out of the insanity of the world for an hour and dive into some adventurous and soothing jams!Don't forget to SUBSCRIBE to Random Old Records via iTunes, Google Play, or RSS. To celebrate the release of Zeenith by Zuider Zee, an album Uncut hails as an ‘unearthed treasure trove', Jason Barnard speaks their singer songwriter Richard Orange to discover more jewels from his back catalogue. Morgan released a handful of blues and roots albums as an artist before branching out as a producer. He’s worked with John Oates of Hall & Oates and actor Kevin Costner among many others. Once upon a time a very rich beer brewer had a son and locked him away in the tippy top floor of his mansion. He didn't let him play with other boys or girls. He didn't let him out into the sunlight. He didn't eve let him exist in any official records. No, this boy was a secret, but one day, he would make himself known. This is the story of the Monkey Faced Boy of Lemp Mansion, but it's not the only one of its kind. Join us this week as we explore the hidden history of hidden rooms and the unfortunate souls allegedly hidden within them. From Monster of Glamis Castle in Scotland; to the Chuas of Gujarat; the newly horrifying disappoint rooms of aristocratic America; we will explore hidden places and practices and the people for whom they were created. Join us on a ride along with Mark Lightcap, guitarist of forgotten 90s band Acetone, as he tells us all about a Los Angeles that no longer exists and the band that disappeared along with it. In Los Angeles in the 90s, Acetone crafted a sultry California sound in their garage. They released an EP on Vernon Yard and two LPs on Neil Young's Vapor and toured with Spiritualized, Mazzy Star, Oasis, and The Verve. While their velvet sound remains absolutely beloved by figures in that scene, nowadays Acetone is surprisingly unknown. Probably one of the greatest mysteries of the music world, the story of Jim Sullivan remains just as fascinating and baffling as it was back in 1975. On this edition of the show (a classic that we've dug up from a few years ago), we have the pleasure of speaking to Matt Sullivan (strangely enough, absolutely no blood-relation to Jim Sullivan), who is the founder and co-owner of Light In The Attic records. LITA Records saw its first seeds sewn in a little basement apartment in Fremont, Seattle, back in 2001, and has since provided us with some fantastic re-issued gems. A spiritual and introverted man, Jim was known to simply sit by the beach and take in the scenery of the water and stars at night. His wife recalls times when they would sit by the seaside in Malibu, wondering “what it would be like to be up there.” Alas, it comes as no surprise that his lyrics were deep and reflective, with heavy hints of yearning for a quiet country life. Songs of long and lonely highways, looking up into the Sun, wondering about UFOs; reflections on his deceased older brother and the funeral procession; inspiration drawn from trippy and mysterious movies about curses and sacrifices. Tapping into this man’s mind by listening to his music has definitely always been a trip down the rabbit hole for anyone present. Fast-forward a few years to early 1975. Not everything had been going according to plan – the music wasn’t quite picking up as expected, and Jim and Barbara’s marriage had begun to fall apart. In a last bid to make something of himself, Jim picked up some of his belongings, packed his guitar, and hit the road with $125 in his pocket. Headed for Nashville, he had hopes of picking himself back up there. However, he never made it to Nashville. Apart from a final call to his wife from Santa Rosa on March 5th (about 900 miles into his journey), none of Jim’s friends or family ever heard of him again. His car and all his belongings were found. Jim, however, completely disappeared. To this day, we still don’t know what happened to him. For more visit: wotrradio.com
Episode #24: Independent labels have long been at the forefront of bringing great music to the public, especially lost gems and overlooked greats that went out of print or were never pressed on any other format than vinyl. Today we talk reissues with the labels Yep Roc and Light in the Attic, as well as talking to one of the bands whose output is receiving the reissue treatment: seminal pub rock band Eggs Over Easy. Yep Roc's General Manager Billy Maupin discusses reissues in general, and Light in the Attic's Matt Sullivan gives us the scoop on tracking down enigmatic folk musician Sixto Rodriguez, and more! Just got home from work, and it's so warm and muggy and gross that the outside feels like the inside of a sewer. YUCK! Luckily, Random Old Records Podcast is back with a brand new episode containing 58 minutes and 7 seconds of chilled-out jams that feel like a blast of sweet A/C to the face. You can download it for free HERE.Episode #52 starts off with some recent blissed-out ballads from the likes of Martin Courtney, Salad Boys, and The Lavender Flu, then flows into two sizzling sets of 60s sunshine pop and soft psych. You'll hear the brooding and tense "Her Name Is Melody" from Adrian Pride (a pseudonym for tripped-out troubadour Bernie Schwartz), recently featured on the Nuggets: Hallucinations comp re-released on Record Store Day 2016. You'll also hear the fuzzed-out "Bad Dream" from the heavily mustachioed Dick Domane, included on Pet Records' essential Mystic Males collection, and the chiming folk-rocker "Leaving It All Behind" by The Toads, included on Pet Records' also essential It's Zimmerman's World LP (and a whole lot more from Pet Records since they are AMAZING and you need everything they ever put out). This one took a lot of time to put together, just to ensure a solid sequence of good vibes from front to back. I hope everyone enjoys it! I've been busy cataloging and organizing my 7" collection for the first time in many years, so July's episode will feature an hour of top jams culled from my racks of 45s! In the meantime, make it your goal to seek out the fantastic debut DOUBLE LP from The Lavender Flu, entitled Heavy Air. It features former Hunches guitarist Chris Gunn going long and weird on a sprawling set of suburban loner back porch pop with a crew of guests. If you're sick of checking out the latest and greatest bands only to find out you can hum all of the chord changes before the first song finishes, then you need it immediately. Every time you think it's gonna zig, it zags. Every time you get lulled into some delicately picked melancholy, everything goes pear shaped. It is just lovely! If you follow Random Old Records on Facebook, you know that episode #48, the first new episode of Random Old Records Podcast in TWO YEARS, was posted to Soundcloud back in February. This isn't just a temporary thing. ROR IS BACK! Expect to see a brand new episode every second day of the month from here on out. The reasons I quit and came back are convoluted and not very exciting, so I'm not going to go into great detail. The main takeaway is that my podcast host Mevio went out of business two years ago and took down everything I had online, and it's taken me a long time to get the time to fix that mess the right way. Below this post you will see a box to subscribe to my brand new mailing list. Since the venues to freely advertise something like a podcast are drying up (lookin' at you, Facebook!), signing up to the ROR mailing list is the best way to keep up. The ONLY time you will get an email from me is when a new episode is posted. That's it! Put your email in, click Submit, and you'll be the first to know when (and where) the next episode drops! While I'm on the self-promotion kick, you will notice that there is a new "Podcast Archive" post below this one. This will contain links and info for past episodes of Random Old Records. I'm slowly going through my files and re-uploading everything, and this will keep track of the process. There are a bunch already posted, with more coming soon! Now that all the boring babble is finished, let's get to the JAMS! Random Old Records Podcast #49 features an hour's worth of killer tracks, The spotlight this time is bruising, heavy, noisy punk rock from the likes of Mystic Inane, Life Stinks, Cows, and Whatever Brains, plus the chillest of chill jams by Mac Demarco, Mild High Club, and Greg Ashley, and a bit of rare 70s rock n' roll from Morningstar and Sugluk! It's been about six months since I last did a podcast, and over a year since I did these with any regularity, but a funny thing happened several weeks ago. I had figured returning to podcasting would be damn near impossible at this point. I hadn't done them monthly in forever, so where the hell was I gonna start?! I think I've bought and listened to something like three hundred records in the past year, and all of them are worthy of your attention in some way. So, I sat down and made a list, and by the time I was done I had filled both sides of a piece of paper and started writing more names in between the cracks. The simple theme of Random Old Records #45 is "things that blew my freakin' mind since the last one."To be more specific, this episode features music that is slightly bent, cracked, or mutilated, with nothing much resembling standard pop, rock, or punk music. You'll hear freaky prog-folk from original Vertigo label acts Cressida and Tudor Lodge, blown-out punk noise by Flipper, Running, Obnox, and Sector Zero, and plain ol' weirdness by E.T. Habit, MX-80 Sound, and Captain Beefheart. Hope you all enjoy!Don't forget to SUBSCRIBE to Random Old Records via iTunes, Google Play, or RSS. If you like the show, please rate it and write a review!
