Ever wonder if that amazing speaker you saw present at that conference ever had a bad day? Or faced the same types of challenges that you face each day in the classroom? Or what if all those great ideas you've been collecting conflict with your colleagues' ideas about language teaching? In this episode, the one and only Joshua Cabral and I discuss how teachers can manage their expectations when deploying Comprehensible Input-driven classes. Specifically, we talk about how to walk the tightrope of being kind to yourself and working with what you have in front of you vs. blindly sticking to "what the research says." Also, we talk about how to interact with colleagues who may be what Joshua terms "legacy teachers" following a "legacy model" of teaching; that is, what we all did until we began to change our pedagogy, and what future teachers will refer to us as once the next big thing in language teaching unfolds.  Joshua is a blogger, a podcaster, an educational consultant, and an advocate for access to education and information both here in the United States and abroad. Send us a textIn this episode of Growing With Proficiency, The Podcast, we're diving into the essentials of comprehensible input (CI) for intermediate and upper-level Spanish learners. Teaching these levels can feel overwhelming when expectations are high, proficiency levels vary, and the curriculum demands keep piling up! But, as always, no estamos solos – we're in this together! In this first part of our three-part series on CI in the upper levels, I'm tackling two major challenges:Realistic Expectations: Language acquisition takes time, and today we're talking about what it means to set achievable goals based on ACTFL guidelines, focusing on how much exposure our students realistically get.Scaffolding for Mixed Levels: In any upper-level class, student proficiency can vary widely. We'll look at strategies to scaffold input and make CI accessible to everyone, from novice-high to intermediate-mid students.Stay tuned for Part 2, where we'll discuss the impact of curriculum overload and the challenges of messy student output. Plus, in our upcoming Spanish episode, we'll be joined by a special guest to talk about CI strategies for AP classes! I'd love to hear your questions for Part 3 of this series. Since the Qing Dynasty sent the first group of young children to America for study, Chinese students have always been fascinated by educational institutions of the West. Can you believe that? This is the first time that we talk about "tea culture" at TeaTime Chinese. 4,000 years ago, Shennong was poisoned whilst he was tasting different herbs. After accidentally eating tea leaves, he recovered from poisoning. From then on, people started drinking tea. In China, "Tu" and "Cha" are interchangeable, and are pronounced differently in different regions. Since the Tang Dynasty, drinking tea has become a daily habit for the Chinese people. Later on, tea went to other Asian countries, before it went to Europe. In Europe, people saw tea as a precious beverage. Today, young Chinese people have a preference for coffee. Tea remains in young people's lives in the form of milk tea. ◉ Read transcripts for free ◉ Become a Patron ◉ Visit merch store ◉ Find us on YouTube ◉ We are on LinkedIn ◉ We are on Facebook ◉ Find a Chinese teacher on italki and receive $10 ◉ One-time Donate

If we want to understand the political relationships between two countries, it is pivotal to understand what happened between them. Between China and Vietnam, there is a fascinating history. In this episode, we will go back to 2000 years ago, to see how Vietnam, this neighbor of China, was born. We will see that Vietnam was once under Chinese rule. Then, Vietnamese people through their rebellion fought back, and established their own nation. So in this episode, I cover some of the ideas behind the comprehensible input method, and then explore the input hypothesis from Stephen Krashen and how these ideas might benefit your language learning methods. As always, keep in mind we are all different and learn in different ways, but I think a lot of these points will be relevant to most of you. A potentially controversial topic for some listeners but an important one nonetheless: Is Comprehensible Input enough on its own? What about output, grammar and practice? Is there a role in the language acquisition class for these too? In this episode, I discuss my take on this argument and hopefully provide some thought-provoking questions for everyone to consider as we talk to colleagues who may teach in a very different to us. Teaching with a CI approach will only become more mainstream when rather than shouting from the corner, we discuss in the middle. Please let me know what you think! Keep in touch and share widely! The Emperor of Qin is one of the most important historical figures in Chinese history. The word "China" derives from the dynasty that he built, the Qin Dynasty. We will use 2 episodes to tell the story of Ying Zheng, which is his former name. In today's episode, we will turn our focus on his life before the establishment of the Qin Dynasty. During the Warring States Period, all 7 states were constantly attempting to conquer each other. Ying Zheng became king at the age of 13, launched his military operations when he was 30, eventually eliminating all 6 states within 9 years of time. However, it wasn't always easy unifying the 6 states. "Jing Ke's assassination of the Emperor of Qin" is passed on till this day, which tells the story of a warrior named Jing Ke, and his attempt to kill Ying Zheng.   ◉ Read transcripts for free ◉ Quizlet flashcards ◉ Become a Patron ◉ Our new merch store! ◉ Find us on YouTube ◉ We are on LinkedIn ◉ We are on Facebook ◉ Find a Chinese teacher on italki and receive $10 ◉ One-time Donate
