I met Dr. Nina Shah on an MMRF trek through Iceland with myeloma patients, caregivers, doctors, and researchers. She shortly after became my doctor while I did an experimental CarT trial and through the process became a friend. She is currently Global Head of Multiple Myeloma Clinical Development and Strategy at Astrazeneca where she seeks better treatments and ultimately a cure for myeloma patients like me. I hope you enjoy this conversation about innovation and leadership.
Kathy Giusti, founder of the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation (MMRF) and a two-time cancer survivor, opens up about her first diagnosis and the life-changing conversation with her primary care doctor. She reflects on the overwhelming "age of information," which often leads patients to more questions than answers, and shares her strategies for dealing with the loss of control that comes with a cancer diagnosis. Kathy also talks about the importance of identifying what truly matters, placing personal priorities in plain sight as daily reminders. She delves into the potential next breakthrough in multiple myeloma research, her success in engaging patients in MMRF's direction, and offers heartfelt advice for families on when and how to tell children about a cancer diagnosis, as well as other important points through the cancer journey, drawing from her own deeply personal experiences. Host of FOX Business Network's The Claman Countdown, Liz Claman is joined by Kathy Giusti, the founder of The Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation (MMRF) and Faculty Co-Chair of The Harvard Business School Kraft Precision Medicine Accelerator. Giusti shares how her background in pharmaceuticals and her own cancer diagnosis inspired the creation of her foundation. Each year, the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation (MMRF) hosts its Laugh for Life event, which aims to educate, empower and inspire individuals to raise awareness and funds for multiple myeloma research. Ahead of its even, CURE spoke with Tina Rettig, a caregiver for her husband,d who was diagnosed with multiple myeloma in 2010. Tina serves as a co-chair for the event, which will be held on May 6, help to fund groundbreaking research initiatives like the MMRF’s most recent Direct to Patient Registry, a cornerstone of its CureCloud (https://themmrf.org/2019/10/multiple-myeloma-research-foundation-mmrf-launches-groundbreaking-direct-to-patient-registry/) . “One of the big takeaways from (Laugh for Life) is the information that we put out there…(It raises) money, and money leads to research, and research leads to testing new treatments that can be approved,” Rettig said. “And there's no one treatment that fits everybody. So it's important that we have different levels of treatment, and that you can (live with) this disease.” In addition, we spoke with Andrew Marcelle, and his father, Peter, who was diagnosed with multiple myeloma in 2016. Marcell will be receiving the “Spirit of Hope” award at this year’s event for his work in fundraising for the MMRF. “It's such a big organization and there's so many people involved with it…(receiving this award) is very humbling and I'm excited for the event,” Marcelle said. After helplessly watching his friend, Anita, pass away from Multiple Myeloma (a form of blood cancer), Eric Gelber decided to do something about it. He has raised more than $1.3 million for the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation by running numerous ultra-marathons around the country. In 2016 Eric completed his most epic adventure by running 200 miles around NYC’s Central Park. Eric and I discuss his relationship with the MMRF, the “200 Mile” documentary, and how he finds the strength to keep moving forward. In 1996, Kathy Giusti was a business executive with a one-year-old daughter at the peak of her career when she was given a death sentence. She was diagnosed with multiple myeloma, a rare and fatal cancer, and told she had three years to live. Determined to live long enough so her daughter would remember her, Giusti quit her job and founded the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation (MMRF) with her identical twin sister. More than 20 years later, Giusti is in remission and under her leadership, the MMRF has driven 10 new approved therapies, tripling patient lifespans. And thanks to Giusti, there has been more progress in multiple myeloma than any other cancer in recent history. Giusti also serves as the co-chair of the Harvard Business School Kraft Precision Medicine Accelerator where she is fighting all cancers and changing the world of medicine.
