Nathan Shaw is the Executive Director and Founder of Vindeket Foods in Fort Collins, and Benjamin Jewell is the Chairman of the Board.  Vindeket is a non-profit organization that was originally founded under the umbrella of Serve 6.8, a ministry aligned with Timberline Church.  Vindeket is a food rescue - they take in near-expired and after best-by packaged foods as well as small or non-standard shaped fruits and vegetables from grocers, food pantries, farmers, and distributors - and distribute it through their retail location and their network of nonprofits.  40% of all created food is wasted in the United States, and Nathan is on a mission to structurally change the food system and rescue more and more food from landfills.  The Vindeket story started over 10 years ago, when Nathan began dumpster diving as a way to stretch his budget.  He was soon overwhelmed with the quality and quantity of food that was destined for the landfill, and hosted community dinners and filled friends' freezers to try to divert this channel that was turning food into waste.  Not long after, Nathan connected with Ben, who carries a strong business background, and together the pair, along with a small board, minimal staff, and maximal volunteers (over 150!), have grown the operation to rescue nearly 2,000,000 pounds of food in 2023! This is an inspiring journey already, and it seems certain to unfold into something far greater as the seasons go by.  Vindeket has recently launched a campaign called Root Bound - seeking funding and skills and connections in pursuit of their next (and larger) location.  We love to talk about win-win-win-win solutions at LoCo Think Tank, and Ben and Nathan share the same everybody wins mentality.  This was a super-interesting topic I knew very little about, and you're sure to be inspired, as I was, by my conversation with Nathan Shaw and Ben Jewell of Vindeket Foods.  Episode Sponsor: InMotion, providing next-day delivery for local businesses.   Ekali's Breakthrough: From Sleeping in the Van to Sampling Drake.   SUMMARY    Aaron Della Vedova chats with Nathan Shaw, known as Ekali, who is a music producer, DJ, and EDM trap-style artist. Ekali has worked with heavy hitters from his first song out of the gate which was picked up by Drake. He has worked with Skrillex, Zoo, and Wafia, to name a few. His journey to get to the top of the food chain in the music industry and that first confidence boost he got when Drake sampled one of his songs. Ekali's love of music started at a young age in Vancouver, Canada. When he was in elementary school a special teacher, Ms. Tomlinson, gifted him a violin that changed his life forever. In high school, he struggled academically and eventually dropped out to pursue music full-time. He joined a band but eventually felt creatively unsatisfied only playing bass.    In the early 2000s, electronic music began to gain popularity, especially in America. This is when the protagonist began to get interested in EDM and started making his own music. His first song was Unfaith, which Drake and Party Next Door sampled, giving him his first big break. He eventually hired an agent in Europe and went on four or five full European tours before becoming a well-known sought-after DJ and producer in America.  But it hasn't all been easy, fun, or pretty.      Ekali gets real about drugs, anxiety, and loneliness on the road as a solo artist, and what, or who, is the catalyst for him to course correct and move into the next phase of his career and life.     Tune in.  We hope you enjoy this open, honest conversation with the remarkably talented Ekali.   What we chat about:   0:01:55   A Journey from Vancouver to the Music Industry   0:03:20   Ekali's Musical Journey   0:06:32  Ekali's Breakthrough Moment and Early Career Experiences   0:11:09  From Touring in a Van to Making Lemonade Out of Lemons   0:14:06  Touring and Substance Abuse   0:16:34   Touring as a Solo Artist   0:20:19   Balancing a Rock Star Lifestyle with Self-Care   0:21:47   Social Anxiety, Solo Album, and Touring During COVID-19   0:25:29  Impact of the Pandemic on Musicians' Live Performance Income   0:27:25   Navigating Touring and Relationships in the Music Industry   0:28:39  Fiance, Touring Life, Marriage Plans, and AI Art   0:30:21   AI and Its Impact on the Arts   0:32:08   Use of AI in Art and Music Creation   0:33:47   Benefits of Utilizing Technology in Music Production   0:35:23   Exploring AI as a Creative Assistant and His Upcoming Music Project   0:41:04   Meaningful Tattoos and Decorating the Human Body   0:46:11  Upcoming Projects and Tour Plans   Quotes:   I kind of put myself in a box, and the type of music that I make isn't necessarily ideal for dance, which is what these events are all about. Like, really heavy trap and dubstep is really fun and there's a lot of high energy, but there's not as much groove as other genres of music.   There are Instagram accounts with hundreds of thousands of followers, and there are artists who just do AI art, and that's it. And to me, that's a little bit scary because it's sort of eroding the integrity of the art.  I don't think that there will ever be a replacement for human art, but I do think that it's going to make living and prospering off of your art even more difficult than it already is for people who are just beginning, people who are trying to get into the field.   And the environment you're in, it's just like I don't know. I'm sure she trusts you, but I know most women would be like, wow, my husband is traveling around the world surrounded by drugs, alcohol, and women. That's got to be stressful a little bit. Even if they feel completely comfortable and trusting of you, you know, that kind of probably eats at them a little. It would eat on anybody.    It like, at my peak, I was playing, I think, close to 150 shows a year, so it was very busy. And coming out of COVID my first tour back, I think I played about 30 dates on the tour, and that was over the course of two months, so it was show every other day. But I got burnt out real quick the past few years. I'm getting older, and I'm finding that I want to spend more time at home now, and luckily I'm able to have that luxury. I can afford to just play a show here and there and then spend more time at home with my loved ones and making music.   Connect with Ekali: http://www.ekalimusic.com YT:  @Ekali   IG: http://www.instagram.com/@Ekalimusic   Connect with Aaron: http://www.chatsandtatts.com Aaron IG: http://www.instagram.com/aarondellavedova Guru Tattoo IG: http://www.instagram.com/gurutattoo

Nathan Shaw is is a foreign policy and international relations expert and one of my favorite people in the world to talk to. Nathan hosts the Envoy podcast on which he rounds up and dives deep into world events from a foreign policy and international relations perspective. Nathan has always been my primary source of world news and I could literally talk to him indefinitely, asking more and more questions about what’s going on in the world. Like my previous guests, Nathan is one of those people that seems to just have a bottomless pit of knowledge, with a well-informed and well-thought-out answer to any question I can throw at him. If you’re like me, over the past decade you’ve probably heard the terms “Euro Crisis”, “Greek debt”, “austerity measures”, “EU” and “NATO”. If you’re also like me, you probably think you have some idea about what these terms mean, but if pressed, couldn’t give a detailed explanation of what they are and why anyone should care. What was the “Euro Crisis” and what actually caused it? What are the “EU” and “NATO”, how do they relate to each other and could one exist without the other? These are the two main questions I have been saving up for this episode of the podcast with Nathan. As I expected, Nathan dives deep into both questions in his usual way: precise, well-thought-out and entertaining. I really enjoyed this conversation with Nathan and I’m super excited to be able to share it with you today. We live in the “selfie generation”; with a prevailing attitude that it’s all about me.  This perspective is absent of the idea of that we exist to make a difference in the world, that we don’t just exist for ourselves. An entrepreneurial mindset in rooted in having a strong sense of purpose.  What is purpose?  Our guest, Nathan Shaw describes it this way, “Passion is purpose revealed”. Having been raised the way (and time) I have been, I was particularly interested in one project that Liferay is involved in. So I took the opportunity and spoke with Nathan Shaw, Principal Consultant at Liferay, about one of Liferay's (literally) most colorful clients, who luckily has has agreed to be a topic in this podcast. With this, you get an impression of how a highly visible and intense project is structured and what's happening behind the scene. And you'll see a site that doesn't really look like your classic portal. Who am I talking about? Sesame Workshop. We talked about * what your kids think of your work when you're always looking at the Sesame Street while pretending to work. * how Sesame frequently releases new content to the site - having fresh content and topics every so often is quite a task for the editorial team. * Big parts of what have been custom for Sesame geting into the product now (in 6.1), namely staging, versioning and branching (improved from the version 6.0 implementation). * Sesame being in the process of upgrading a high-traffic, high profile site from 5.1 to 6.1 * the server infrastructure as well as some of the software background (e.g. Alfresco, GSA) * how is the site built - e.g. how much is stock, how much is custom? How is it all built? * We close with a discussion about how people do find Liferay and learn about the product and the company. You'll find this episode - and make sure that you don't miss any of the future episodes - by subscribing to http://feeds.feedburner.com/RadioLiferay with your favourite podcatcher or itunes. Something else... Radio Liferay now has its own landing page at www.liferay.com/radio. So if you want to recommend this podcast to somebody, this is where you should point them to. Also, I'd like to get more of your feedback: Do you feel this is valuable? Whereever you get the podcast - if there's an opportunity to rate it please do so - e.g. itunes currently does not have enough votes to display an average . Also, please provide feedback to the episodes so that I can balance the next topics and adjust them a bit more to your interest. You can do that on my blog or on twitter. I do have a long list of community contributors that I'll contact in the next weeks to prepare some more recordings and mix them with the Liferay Employees as this whole program is not purely about the company people. Feel free to suggest more interviewees and topics though. Thank you!
