A version of this essay was published by the Deccan Herald at https://www.deccanherald.com/opinion/the-end-of-the-european-century-3438618The frenetic activity recently around the Ukraine war has brought into sharp focus several things. One is the irrelevance of the United Nations. Two, the fact that Europe has in effect reverted to being a backwater in the scheme of things. Three, the US may have finally escaped from being a British “Imperial Fortress”. Four, it would be generally a good idea for Europe to bury the hatchet with Russia, as they usually lose wars with Russia. The United Nations, which is to say the “liberal rules-based international order” [sic] set up by the winners in World War II, may have reached the end of its useful life. The UN is going the way of its feckless predecessor, the League of Nations. There were resolutions and counter-resolutions at the UN and its Security Council, but none of it mattered. It signals the end of globalization, and the end of Europe's brief dominance. After Vladimir Zelensky made a spectacle of himself in Donald Trump's Oval Office (which may have been instigated by Keir Starmer and others encouraging Zelensky to, as it were, stand up to Trump), there was the remarkable, hastily organized summit in London to drum up support for Ukraine. Alas, it showed instead the relative impotence of western Europe: despite their brave words, they cannot defend Ukraine without US support. The participants were: Britain, France, Germany, Poland, Denmark, Sweden, Italy, Turkey, etc and Euro-grandees such as Ursula von der Leyen. It is unclear whether this motley crew can raise more than a few infantry brigades/squadrons of aircraft, and some munitions. Enough perhaps for a peace-keeping force after a standstill/ceasefire, but not for a defensive force if war were to continue.A major problem with Europe is that they are living off of old glory. There was no reason to include both Britain and France in the UN Security Council with veto power after WWII, except for misguided American generosity. But there is a much bigger problem: after a brief ‘European Century' (or to be precise, three or four centuries) of global importance, they are reverting to their natural, diminished state. The economic center of gravity of the world, according to McKinsey and The Economist, has moved decisively to Asia from where it was in the post-war era (somewhere in the Arctic Sea near Iceland around 1950 and 1960). The Industrial Revolution enabled European conquest, and this caused a break in the pattern of Asian prominence. The magisterial “Economic History of the World” by Angus Maddison for the EU showed how India was the biggest economic power in the world from 1 CE (where they started their study) up until the 1500s or 1600s. India and China dominated the world economy until European colonialism hollowed out both, especially India. Now the pendulum is swinging back. And with economic power comes military power, as well as influence. My contention is that Europe isn't really a separate ‘continent', but only an appendage to Asia, and it should be called “Northwest Asia” henceforth.A major reason for British power, apart from their guns, steel and ruthlessness, was their cunning use of far-flung ‘imperial fortresses' such as in Malta, Gibraltar, Bermuda, Halifax, St Helena, Mauritius, Singapore, etc from which they could project power around the world. Interestingly, they were able to gaslight the United States into being another such fortress despite formal independence. Whitehall has led Foggy Bottom by the nose. In effect, NATO has been the instrument for thisThe US now seems to have woken up, and is pushing back. Starmer was told by Trump that the best outcome is for the war to end and the misery to stop for Ukraine, despite loss of territory. In any case, territory in Europe has been very fluid, and they have been fighting interminable wars there such as the 30 Years' War, 100 Years' War, etc. Notably, the Crimean peninsula was ‘donated' to Ukraine by Khruschev, himself a Russian-speaking Ukrainian. There are age-old blood feuds in Europe. I realised this in the Soviet days when I had a study partner in grad school, a Ukrainian-American woman. By mistake I referred to her as a ‘Russian' and she was most offended. I think this is because western Europe has been fighting with Russia forever, based partly on race (Russians are seen as ‘tainted' by Asian blood) and religion (Russian Orthodox Church vs Catholics and other Protestants).Unfortunately for them, western Europeans have continually lost their wars to Russia: most notably, Napoleon and Hitler were decimated. It would be best for all concerned if the EU/NATO and Russia were to make peace; otherwise they will both end up dominated and turned into vassals by China. The AI-generated podcast from NotebookLM.google.com is here:792 words, 4 Mar 2025 This is a public episode. Lassen Sie uns zusammenfassen, was passiert. Patrick Theros returns to discuss the coming 2nd administration of President-elect Donald J. Trump in relation to the U.S. economy, the overthrow of Assad and the situation in Syria, the Russia-Ukraine conflict, Israel/Palestine, and the future of Europe. At the beginning of the conversation Amb. Theros explains what he thinks cost the Democrats the 2024 election. He makes the case that the Democrats failed to appeal what voters were most concerned about and threw too much money at political consultants who weren't able to lead the Democrats to victory. In this regard, Theros criticizes the approach of wonks. He also argues that a number of culture war issues (ie: woke, trans issues, etc.) did not resonate during this election & the Democrats did not do enough to explain to voters why Biden's economic policies were a long-term good. We then moved onto discussing the Trump's stated economic policies, particularly his plans for mass deportations of illegal/undocumented immigrants & tariffs. Theros argues that these two specific policies are at cross-purposes with each other. He also discusses Trump's tax cut plans. From there we move onto international relations and foreign policy. Theros gives his take on the Syria situation (the overthrow of Assad by Syrian rebels) as well as Israel and Turkey, both U.S. allies, could come into conflict over based on what is currently been reported about Israeli strikes there. We will discuss the dynamics influencing both Turkey's Erdogan and Israel's Netanyahu and how this could lead to some real geopolitical tumult in the region. Theros also offer his take on the Russia/Ukraine conflict, and offers what he believes is Trump's plan for ending the conflict and bringing about negotiations. We discuss EU and NATO's eastward expansion and how the approach of EU/NATO eastward expansion played into Putin's hands. However, Theros argues that Putin's amassing of military forces along the border and eventual invasion of Ukraine changed the paradigm. As much as one can criticize how NATO and the EU approached dealing with Russia in the past, Theros argues Russia crossed a line with its actions involving Ukraine in a way that cannot be rationalized by the EU/NATO eastward expansion discourse. This leads us into a conversation about the future of Europe and increased defense spending in Europe. In the course of our conversation Theros will also offer his criticism of populist politicians and express his concerns about the potential of the Trump administration to try and politicize the military. In the second segment of the show, Antiwar.Com newswire reporter Dave DeCamp returns to discuss the latest developments in Syria. As with others who have spoken on the program in the past few days, DeCamp cautions that we are in murky territory with how events will unfold in Syria going forward. We discuss recent reporting on Ukraine's assisting the HTS Syrian Rebels, delve into HTS and its leader Abu Muhammed al-Jolani, the Islamist nature of HTS, the best-case scenario for Syria under HTS rule, the weakening of Iran due to these events, thoughts on Trump's hawkish picks for his administration, and much, much more!

Deeper, it reflects chaos within EU/NATO as what strategy to implement now that Russia is defeating Ukraine and Trump-US may leave Europe holding the Ukraine war bag. Putin's reply to Macron was if he (Macron) says there's no longer any ‘red lines', then Russia has none as well, including use of nuclear arms if Russia's existence is threatened. Putin repeated his oblique suggestion again that the ‘west' may take western Ukraine, which never was part of the Slavic homeland. Third speech by Shumer ‘warned' Netanyahu was ‘out of control' and elections should take place in Israel, clearly a message from Biden. All 3 US wars (proxy or direct as in Yemen) all going poorly. Show concludes with another ‘3s': 3 economic reports in the US (CPI, PPI, and Retail sales) all showing a chronic inflation and emerging real economy slowdown developing.

Our prior episode on this the day of the "coup" was not allowed to publish. The people in Western countries need to get better "experts" unless their pure goal is to create non-sense and misinformation. It's become clear that peace was never the intent or strategy for the US and EU/NATO coalition. One point not discussed is that Russia now has a convient ground attack point via the Belarus position if they decide to move of Kyiv. Please don't forget the over million people who have been savagely murdered, and the countless women and children that have been brutally raped and will live with the scars of war forever. Please do not forget the people and children now enslaved because of this war, now being traded across the earth as a global commodity. They never were given a choice. Please take time to acknowledge the horrors of war, and the effects from the chaos of fleeing your home. Marche Blanche

We continue on our journey with PART 3 of my Ukraine Series... extrapolating on Oliver Stone's Ukraine on Fire Documentary. In this episode... I dive into the perspectives of President Viktor Yanukovych and one of the deadliest revolutions in history... The Maidan Revolution!   Many don't know much about the Maidan Revolution... or the specific events that led up to it... Yanukovych was handed a wounded economy from predecessor Viktor Yushchenko... important trade agreements and negotiations were needed to patch up the mess and get Ukraine back on track. However, negotiations weren't in favor for Ukraine through the lens of Mr. Yanukovych... leading to a pause in negotiations with the European Union. This led to the uproar of specific populations of Ukraine... the Western-Central Ukrainians and Neo-Nazi extremist organizations. Again... geographical divides existed... Eastern-Southern Ukrainians support Russia and saw the EU-NATO alliance more so as a threat rather than protection... These populations weren't protesting due to this pause in negotiations by Mr. Yanukovych.   I have discovered and quoted independent journalist + author Chris Kasper de Ploeg and his book Ukraine in the Crossfire quite often to support everything I state and cite in this episode involving the events leading to and during the euromaidan protests... I am also quoting and summarizing from key individuals interviewed from the Oliver Stone Documentary as well... I am simply summarizing and explaining to the best of my ability... not justifying or condoning. So don't flip out! If errors exist and important info is left out... feel free to send me some feedback which is always more than welcome.    The Recipe for Revolution runs deep... Revolving around MONEY... THE MEDIA... and SPECIFIC TECHNIQUES. Oliver Stone highlights that we have seen these repeatable steps and tactics in many other places around the world throughout history. We touch base on this recipe ten-fold in regards to the Maidan Revolution in this episode... and we will revisit this recipe in future episodes when we travel to other parts of the world involving almost identical revolutions.   The plot keeps thickening.    Enjoy. Or not.   Yours Truly. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/unveiledpatriot/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/unveiledpatriot/support

ICWA's Stavros Niarchos Foundation fellow Steven Tagle describes a military transfer at the port late last year and what it may mean for the future of European security. *Note: This episode mentions a Russian missile system purchased by Turkey.

In the aftermath of the United States' withdrawal from Afghanistan and the announcement of the AUKUS security pact between the U.S., United Kingdom, and Australia, the issue of European strategic autonomy is back to the forefront of security debates on both sides of the Atlantic. Europe remains divided on the role the U.S. and NATO should play in European security, with diverging opinions not only between, but also within member states. Some, following the lead of French President Macron, advocate for bolstering European defense, while others argue that a greater role for the European Union on security issues would detract from NATO. How have NATO and the EU collaborated historically? What are points of tension and areas for convergence between the organizations? What would be the implications of enhanced NATO-EU cooperation for relations between the U.S., EU, and other major geopolitical powers? On Wednesday, December 8, the Center on the United States and Europe at Brookings hosted an expert panel discussion to explore challenges and opportunities for EU–NATO cooperation.   Subscribe to Brookings Events on iTunes, send feedback email to events@brookings.edu, and follow us and tweet us at @policypodcasts on Twitter. How do we make sense of Turkey's recent turn against the West – after decades of Turkish cooperation and desire to be integrated into the European and wider Western community in terms of foreign policy? Dr. Oya Dursun-Özkanca's new book Turkey-West Relations: The Politics of Intra-alliance Opposition (Cambridge UP, 2019) interrogates the dynamics of the relationship between Turkey and the West, particularly the EU, NATO, and the United States. The compelling book develops a framework of intra-alliance opposition to explain this shift from Turkey's engagement with the West as a desirable ally to Turkey's increasingly hostility to the West after 2010. Moving beyond the power and personality of Erdogan, Dursun-Özkanca develops an analytical framework of the politics of intra-alliance opposition and provides a comprehensive and nuanced account of how and why Turkish foreign policy has changed within the transatlantic alliance. She offers three categories of intra-alliance opposition behavior: boundary testing; boundary challenging; boundary breaking. She deploys these categories to differentiate between the motivations behind the use of each tool – providing an analysis of Turkey that can also be exported to other cases. This extensively researched book depends upon extensive fieldwork and more than 200 semi-structured elite interviews conducted with government officials, diplomats, academics, officials, and journalists in Turkey, Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Cyprus, the UK, Germany, and the U.S. The book provides 6 case studies (Turkey's pragmatic foreign policy in the Western Balkans, the Turkish vote over the EU-NATO security exchange, the EU-Turkey deal on the refugee crisis, Turkey's energy policies, Turkish rapprochement with Russia in security and defense and Turkish foreign policy on Syria and Iraqi) that demonstrate the 3 categories. The book concludes three possible alternative futures for Turkey's relations with the West and the podcast includes an analysis of what the change in U.S. leadership (Biden-Blinken) might mean for Turkish-Western relations. Dr. Dursun-Özkanca is the Endowed Chair of International Studies and Professor of Political Science at Elizabethtown College. She has edited two books – The European Union as an Actor in Security Sector Reform (Routledge, 2014) and External Interventions in Civil Wars (co-edited with Stefan Wolff, Routledge, 2014) – and has a forthcoming book entitled The Nexus Between Security Sector Reform/Governance and Sustainable Development Goal-16: An Examination of Conceptual Linkages and Policy Recommendations, forthcoming by Geneva Centre for Security Sector Governance (DCAF) (London: Ubiquity Press). How do we make sense of Turkey’s recent turn against the West – after decades of Turkish cooperation and desire to be integrated into the European and wider Western community in terms of foreign policy? Dr. Oya Dursun-Özkanca’s new book Turkey-West Relations: The Politics of Intra-alliance Opposition (Cambridge UP, 2019) interrogates the dynamics of the relationship between Turkey and the West, particularly the EU, NATO, and the United States. The compelling book develops a framework of intra-alliance opposition to explain this shift from Turkey’s engagement with the West as a desirable ally to Turkey’s increasingly hostility to the West after 2010. This week on EURACTIV's Yellow Room, we are talking about Friday's summit, where the EU leaders are expected to discuss security and defence issues. During the first part of their meeting, they will be joined by NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg for an exchange of views on EU-NATO cooperation. Afterward, they will focus on the EU strategic autonomy and the EU's new and shiny work in progress - the EU Strategic Compass. To break down the components of the summit we are joined by EURACTIV'S Alexandra Brzozowski.  We are also talking about the findings of a research by Global Witness, an international NGO, on how the European Commission finances gas pipeline projects. The EU has spent more than 440 million euros to found these delayed or failed projects. To shed some light on what went wrong and what are the Commission's plans for the future we spoke with Frederic Simon, EURACTIV's energy and environment editor.

For more than seven decades the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) has been the most potent security organisation on the European continent, an embodiment of the transatlantic relationship, and a bulwark against any threat to states that form part of it. NATO is based on the principle that an attack against one or several of its members is considered as an attack against all. This is the principle of collective defence, which is enshrined in Article 5 of the Washington Treaty signed in 1949. Today, NATO has 30 member states, all on the European continent except Canada and the United States. After the end of the cold war in 1991 some doubted if NATO was needed any more, yet subsequent developments have shown that the organisation's tasks, whilst evolving, remain absolutely pertinent to the present and future realities. Most EU member states are also NATO members, but not all. But calls for closer EU-NATO relations have increased, with ideas on burden sharing where appropriate. Some have even called for the EU to take over all of NATO's responsibilities, but these calls are widely dismissed. Defining an optimal way for EU-NATO co-operation to develop is one of the many challenges facing the two institutions Given the changing nature of conflict, NATO has had to change too. For the future, hybrid warfare, cyberattacks, and violent non-state actors are as much likely to be the sort of threats NATO has to deal with as were the classic tank battles of the past. In this episode of Global Europe Unpacked, Will Murray speaks to Dr Jamie Shea – a professor in Strategy and Security at the University of Exeter and NATO's former Deputy Sec Gen for Emerging Security Challenges, well known as the organisation's spokesperson during the Kosovo war – about:why NATO is still relevant in 2021;how NATO is dealing with emerging threats;how NATO should handle a modern Russia;whether Georgia and Ukraine should be allowed to join NATO;what President Joe Biden means for EU-NATO relations; andwhether the EU's global ambitions are compatible with NATO.For more news analysis and commentary on the EU and its neighbourhood, visit commonspace.eu or follow us on twitter @commonspaceEU.

Podcast recorded on EURACTIV Staholder event organized in cooperation with MEP Eduard Kukan (EPP Group) entitled "NATO at 70: Cooperation with EU or lack thereof?" -------------- In April 2019, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization will celebrate its 70th anniversary. But as it reaches a mature age, the Alliance is a transformed body that faces not only external threats, but also many internal uncertainties. In many areas, the current agenda reflects earlier achievements, failures and obstacles. As the European continent faces multiple security threats, the two organizations need each other and face similar – if not identical – complex threats. In a changing strategic context, the EU itself is currently not able territorially defend all of its member states. NATO needs the EU’s contribution to the development of European defense capabilities. This discussion aims to identify and analyze the most crucial and promising areas of cooperation between the EU and NATO. Our panel of leading experts on NATO-EU cooperation will evaluate the state of responsiveness towards major challenges of hybrid threats and capability development, which is a backbone for a consolidated cooperation. What are the prospects of a strengthened EU-NATO cooperation in cybersecurity and strategic communication? How could the new EU initiatives potentially make a positive contribution to NATO? Why is the European public support dropping towards NATO, while it supports a strengthened European cooperation, even as growing costs and expenses for coordinated European defense multiplies? Is it the antipathy towards multilateralism, some surge in anti-American sentiments or a crippled credibility of NATO? And what can and should be done beyond what has been done in previous decades? PANELISTS: - Eduard Kukan, Member of the European Parliament (EPP) - Dalibor Pavolka, Ministry of Defence of the SR - Pavel Macko, Security Expert (Ret. Lt. Gen) - Tomáš Valášek (via video call), Director, Carnegie Europe MODERATOR: Lucia Yar, EURACTIV Slovakia -------------- If you liked our podcast, feel free to rate it, share it with your friends and subscribe to our channel. Nathan has always been my primary source of world news and I could literally talk to him indefinitely, asking more and more questions about what’s going on in the world. Like my previous guests, Nathan is one of those people that seems to just have a bottomless pit of knowledge, with a well-informed and well-thought-out answer to any question I can throw at him. If you’re like me, over the past decade you’ve probably heard the terms “Euro Crisis”, “Greek debt”, “austerity measures”, “EU” and “NATO”. If you’re also like me, you probably think you have some idea about what these terms mean, but if pressed, couldn’t give a detailed explanation of what they are and why anyone should care. What was the “Euro Crisis” and what actually caused it? What are the “EU” and “NATO”, how do they relate to each other and could one exist without the other? These are the two main questions I have been saving up for this episode of the podcast with Nathan. As I expected, Nathan dives deep into both questions in his usual way: precise, well-thought-out and entertaining. I really enjoyed this conversation with Nathan and I’m super excited to be able to share it with you today.
