Ekali's Breakthrough: From Sleeping in the Van to Sampling Drake.   SUMMARY    Aaron Della Vedova chats with Nathan Shaw, known as Ekali, who is a music producer, DJ, and EDM trap-style artist. Ekali has worked with heavy hitters from his first song out of the gate which was picked up by Drake. He has worked with Skrillex, Zoo, and Wafia, to name a few. His journey to get to the top of the food chain in the music industry and that first confidence boost he got when Drake sampled one of his songs. Ekali's love of music started at a young age in Vancouver, Canada. When he was in elementary school a special teacher, Ms. Tomlinson, gifted him a violin that changed his life forever. In high school, he struggled academically and eventually dropped out to pursue music full-time. He joined a band but eventually felt creatively unsatisfied only playing bass.    In the early 2000s, electronic music began to gain popularity, especially in America. This is when the protagonist began to get interested in EDM and started making his own music. His first song was Unfaith, which Drake and Party Next Door sampled, giving him his first big break. He eventually hired an agent in Europe and went on four or five full European tours before becoming a well-known sought-after DJ and producer in America.  But it hasn't all been easy, fun, or pretty.      Ekali gets real about drugs, anxiety, and loneliness on the road as a solo artist, and what, or who, is the catalyst for him to course correct and move into the next phase of his career and life.     Tune in.  We hope you enjoy this open, honest conversation with the remarkably talented Ekali.   What we chat about:   0:01:55   A Journey from Vancouver to the Music Industry   0:03:20   Ekali's Musical Journey   0:06:32  Ekali's Breakthrough Moment and Early Career Experiences   0:11:09  From Touring in a Van to Making Lemonade Out of Lemons   0:14:06  Touring and Substance Abuse   0:16:34   Touring as a Solo Artist   0:20:19   Balancing a Rock Star Lifestyle with Self-Care   0:21:47   Social Anxiety, Solo Album, and Touring During COVID-19   0:25:29  Impact of the Pandemic on Musicians' Live Performance Income   0:27:25   Navigating Touring and Relationships in the Music Industry   0:28:39  Fiance, Touring Life, Marriage Plans, and AI Art   0:30:21   AI and Its Impact on the Arts   0:32:08   Use of AI in Art and Music Creation   0:33:47   Benefits of Utilizing Technology in Music Production   0:35:23   Exploring AI as a Creative Assistant and His Upcoming Music Project   0:41:04   Meaningful Tattoos and Decorating the Human Body   0:46:11  Upcoming Projects and Tour Plans   Quotes:   I kind of put myself in a box, and the type of music that I make isn't necessarily ideal for dance, which is what these events are all about. Like, really heavy trap and dubstep is really fun and there's a lot of high energy, but there's not as much groove as other genres of music.   There are Instagram accounts with hundreds of thousands of followers, and there are artists who just do AI art, and that's it. And to me, that's a little bit scary because it's sort of eroding the integrity of the art.  I don't think that there will ever be a replacement for human art, but I do think that it's going to make living and prospering off of your art even more difficult than it already is for people who are just beginning, people who are trying to get into the field.   And the environment you're in, it's just like I don't know. I'm sure she trusts you, but I know most women would be like, wow, my husband is traveling around the world surrounded by drugs, alcohol, and women. That's got to be stressful a little bit. Even if they feel completely comfortable and trusting of you, you know, that kind of probably eats at them a little. It would eat on anybody.    It like, at my peak, I was playing, I think, close to 150 shows a year, so it was very busy. And coming out of COVID my first tour back, I think I played about 30 dates on the tour, and that was over the course of two months, so it was show every other day. But I got burnt out real quick the past few years. I'm getting older, and I'm finding that I want to spend more time at home now, and luckily I'm able to have that luxury. I can afford to just play a show here and there and then spend more time at home with my loved ones and making music.   Connect with Ekali: http://www.ekalimusic.com YT:  @Ekali   IG: http://www.instagram.com/@Ekalimusic   Connect with Aaron: http://www.chatsandtatts.com Aaron IG: http://www.instagram.com/aarondellavedova Guru Tattoo IG: http://www.instagram.com/gurutattoo

We had the pleasure of interviewing Wrabel over Zoom video! The much-anticipated debut full-length album from Wrabel, ‘these words are all for you', will drop on Sept. 24 via Big Gay Records/Nettwerk, ushering into the world the next chapter from one of modern music's most celebrated, versatile, powerhouse songwriters and rising artists. Also today Wrabel has announced a short, intimate run of live dates, the nothing but the piano tour, which includes a stop at NYC's Le Poisson Rouge and an album release show at LA's The Regent Theater this late summer/early fall. Wrabel will also perform this Sunday (6.06) at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum as part of the OutLoud: Raising Voices festival. The new album is a refined, masterfully written and cathartically performed collection that is 11 years in the making. Whether it's on tracks like the Billboard-applauded “good”, the beautifully orchestrated “wish you well” (about the “tug of war” of letting go of past loves), the achingly reminiscent and sonically vast “london”, the hauntingly sparse “don't pick up the phone” or the new single “nothing but the love” (whose video drops today), ‘these words are all for you' showcases what has made Wrabel a go-to for heart-shattering slice-of-life songwriting about finding love, losing it, and discovering oneself throughout the journey.“I can't believe this is my debut album. It's been years in the making. The oldest song is around eight years old, and the newest, just a few months,” said Wrabel about the lifespan of the album's creation. “I poured everything into this record and I am just so proud of it. I feel so lucky to have been able to make it with people so close to me and as an independent artist on my own label partnered with Nettwerk. I always thought my first record would be a break-up record, since the first time I started making it it very much was. This album is filled with love. Hope. True stories and true feelings. I hope me sharing in this way helps even one person feel understood, feel better, feel like they're not alone, and it offers hope that love will come and bring the healing powers it holds.”The new video for “nothing but the love” (directed by Michael Thomas and featuring dancer Layne Willis) is gorgeously choreographed and feels like a spiritual reawakening. Watch HERE.Of the video, Wrabel said “Michael Thomas was such a pleasure to work with on this video. And Layne Willis, my goodness. I feel so lucky to have gotten to witness your incredible talent up close. This song is so close to my heart. The only song I wrote by myself on the record. With Michael's direction and Layne's emotive movement, we wanted to show that someone or something is showing me how to express myself, showing me the flow of expression. To mirror the love I am so grateful to have found.”Wrabel's resume speaks for itself. He has toured alongside and collaborated with P!nk, has co-writing/performance credits alongside the likes of Kesha, Marshmello, Celeste, Backstreet Boys, Ellie Goulding, Louis Tomlinson, Louis the Child, Wafia, Cash Cash, and more. He's released four previous EPs, has racked up 265 million streams across all DSP platforms, and his song “The Village” has become an LGBTQ+ anthem. Over the past few years, his  “knife-to-the-heart” (Idolator) songwriting has led to him becoming “one of Hollywood's finest songwriters for a decade” (American Songwriter), earned him a performance spot on the national NBC TODAY stage and had Billboard saying that Wrabel is “ready for his breakthrough”.We want to hear from you! We had the pleasure of interviewing Wafia over Zoom video! For L.A.-based singer/songwriter Wafia, the possibilities in pop music go way beyond escapism. Since breaking through as a featured vocalist on Louis the Child’s gold-certified smash “Better Not,” the Iraqi-Syrian, queer-identifying artist has brought a deep sense of purpose to her kaleidoscopic dance-pop, turning each track into a powerful conduit for self-discovery. On her new EP Good Things, Wafia shares her most impactful body of work yet, boldly detailing the end of a bad relationship and the life-changing transformation that followed. Hailed by VOGUE as “the 24-year-old, Muslim, Iraqi-Syrian, queer artist that is single-handedly shaking up the music industry with her ‘purposeful pop,’” Wafia has made waves for magnifying identifiable and idiosyncratic experiences in the form of alternative electro anthems rich with keen observation and lyrical power. With over 300 million worldwide streams, and widespread acclaim from the likes of W, LADYGUNN, NPR, PAPER, Teen Vogue, and more, Wafia is keenly aware of her position in life and is committed to empowering marginalized communities, at home and abroad, while also helping women of all shapes, sizes, and nationalities find themselves in her music. Through her unique art is distinctly personal, Wafia firmly believes creative gifts are meant to be shared and is passionately determined to create a positive environment that says all are welcome here.We want to hear from you! Laura and Sari have restored regular Morning Moments and introduce a different kind of Bucketlist item involving innovation in the kitchen. In Wifey's Weekly Words, the girls talk about body positivity. Loving yourself takes time, but accepting that there are many different body types should be now. Finally in Love, Lust or Lie, the girls center on timing and dating. It's perfectly okay to be selfish about what you are committing to but it's important to make it known. The songs of the week are Nights Like This by Loud Luxury and Better Not by Louis the Child and Wafia. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app

This week ,we sat down with FINNEAS, a producer and songwriter who is now making waves as a solo artist. He’s made smash hits with Khalid, Tori Kelly, Wafia, and of course his sister, Billie Eilish. Like FINNEAS says, “Sometimes these songs sneak out of me...This song is who I am, my brain, my mouth, and it’s only true if I’m singing it.” And he HAS been singing it. In 2018, FINNEAS released six singles, each with its own life, cover art, and emotion. His latest singles, College and Hollywood Forever, have been on repeat on my Spotify. On this episode, we talk FINNEAS's acting career, the confessional nature of his songs, his dynamic with Billie, and much more. You can check out FINNEAS on Spotify and buy tix for the upcoming '1 By 1' tour with his sister. Thank you to FINNEAS and his team for allowing this episode to happen, and I hope you enjoy this conversation as much as I did. Hailing from Brisbane, Australia, electronic-R&B singer-songwriter Wafia has already released two critically-acclaimed EPs and a collaborative EP in under three years. Her latest EP, XIII (when you're reading this in the voiceover just say 8), marks a maturity in her songwriting as she touches on the Syrian refugee crisis, embracing her sexuality, and dealing with heartache. We sat down with Wafia before her sold-out show at the Drake Hotel to discuss what it's like to tour the United States as an artist of Arab descent, how her music caught the attention of  Pharrell, and her favourite songs to make up and break up to.

As the leaves start to fall off the trees and that distinctive chill in the crisp autumn air returns, I am called to slow down and turn inwards. Autumn is represented by the medicine wheel direction of West and the colour blue (or sometimes black). In Ayurveda, autumn is represented by the Vatta (wind) dosha. May this melodic and emotive mix help to relax and create space for introspection. The title comes to me from what I could remember from a recent dream… [I remember being asked 2 questions. I cannot remember the 1st for the life of me. The 2nd involved making a connection between a canoe and a cave. I began my story explaining how reality was a sort of illusion and how physical journeys were actually more about the inner journey - what goes on inside someone. Henceforth, it matters not whether you are travelling in a canoe or sitting in a cave. A cave is a type of canoe. The journey is inside regardless.] "Remember, you only need to move a 1/4 inch in the direction of your dreams to start feeling better" - Don Ollsin Intro | Excerpt(s) from Calum MacDiarmid's "Worship" (inspired by Derry MacDiarmid's "Century of Insight") 01 | One Mile North - In 1983 He Loved to Fly 02 | Japanese Wallpaper - Breathe In (feat.
