We welcome back to The Mulligan Stew and the Podcast Edmonton's Nuela Charles. The last visit was just before the 2018 Junos. She had one of her 3 Juno nominations in her sights. Her self-titled 4th album was released Friday. It's the best yet. Always impressed with her work ethic, passion for the writing and creating of her music, and the honesty with which she takes us through the process. We've included three tracks in the Podcast Heavy Worthy Don't get It Check out the rest of the Nuela Charles album. It's engaging and engaging!! It's about Nuela, her journey, and the power of being yourself. Nuela was born in Kenya and raised in Switzerland, Canada, and the Bahamas, before settling down full-time in Edmonton, Alberta. I asked Nuela if the influences of those countries could be found in her music but she surprised me by saying “I'm a rock/pop artist. I grew up on rock. That's what I like' She has also shared the stage as direct support for some of Canada's musical icons including Sam Roberts Band, Jann Arden, and Stars. Additionally, she has been nominated for multiple awards including three JUNO Awards for Adult Contemporary Album of the Year. This year the SOCAN Foundation announced Nuela as a winner of the second annual Her Music Award. Nuela has amassed over 4 million career streams to date, and placements on hit shows such as Jane the Virgin, Tiny Pretty Things, House of Lies, The Order and Finding Carter.
The topic of this week's show is Building The Story and joining me on the show is Juno-nominated musician Nuela Charles!Nuela and I had a great chat about how to effectively build your story as an independent musician. And how, sometimes, no matter how much planning you do, it can often just come down to timing and luck. Like, sometimes it's just about which way the wind is blowing. This is a really great talk and I hope you enjoy it!FRESH CONTENT LINKSNuela recommends: Amber Mark - Bliss Jen recommends: Wet Leg's debut album SOTWNuela Charles - Awakening Learn more about Nuela at nuelacharles.comAnd learn more about Fritz Media at fritzmedia.ca
Alternative / Soul artist & three time juno nominee Nuela Charles takes us behind her new single Awakening! “Awakening” is as much about the evolution, as it is about the arrival. That feeling of “I'm here. This is me. Take it or leave it,” said Nuela Charles. “It's about re-awakening that fiery spirit within, that we can diminish for the sake of others sometimes.” Not only do we dive behind this amazing track, but also into what it was like to be named a winner for the 2nd annual Her Music Awards, getting to perform in Spain during a recent songwriting trip, and much more!! On episode 34, Ben Plotnik from the JUNO Award winning string quartet, The Fretless, joins me to talk about their latest, collaborative album “Open House”, released on October 22nd, 2021. "Open House" is a 10 song album and the first project that sees The Fretless feature vocals on all the tracks and in such a prominent role. Working with artists like Celeigh Cardinal, Nuela Charles, The Bros. Landreth, Dan Mangan and more. We talk about the process of interpreting and re-arranging songs from Bruce Cockburn, Steely Dan, Feist, and Alessia Cara - to name a few - for the the fiddle/viola & cello, and what they needed to do in order to clear the songs for publishing on the album.A supergroup of celebrated solo artists, The Fretless has been creating a singular and signature sound that dares to expand the idea of what a string music quartet can be—transforming fiddle tunes and folk melodies into intricate, beautiful, high-energy arrangements that have quickly gained a dedicated following and accolades from around the world. Within what appears to be a simple construct — two fiddles, a viola, and a cello — The Fretless has created a sound that is distinctly rich, multi-layered, and uniquely percussive. This tonal quality is pushing traditional music to new heights, producing a completely fresh approach to Folk music. If you have music you would like us to hear, or have a great release day rollout plan you want the world to know about, send an email with your EPK and release plan to: contactreleaseday@gmail.comThank you so much for listening, and Welcome to Release Day!Theme music composed by Evan Denley.Reference Links:The Fretless website - https://www.thefretless.com/Decolonial Clothing - https://decolonialclothingco.ca/No Sleep Til Sudbury Podcast with Brent Jensen: https://nosleeptilsudbury.libsyn.com/Release Day Spotify Playlist - https://open.spotify.com/playlist/0GbiC5YorhQObK1n3FndhJ?si=l0sbbP1ARnaWaDbFRVzpEwRelease Day Website - https://releasedayseries.com/"Release Day," an ongoing series where we sit down with Canadian musicians of all genres to discuss their latest releases from singles to albums, and their strategy behind releasing it to the world.https://releasedayseries.com/https://twitter.com/ReleasedaySrshttps://www.instagram.com/releaseday_series/

Join my conversation with Nuela Charles. The 3x JUNO-Award nominated Nuela Charles is an alternative/soul singer-songwriter known for her soulful vocals and captivating stage presence, solidifying herself as a Canadian music staple. Born in Kenya, raised in Switzerland, Canada and the Bahamas before settling in Canada, Charles' music is infused with her multicultural upbringing, giving a fresh and diverse flare to her sound. Accompanying her latest single "Space," is the addition of "Nerve" - a collaboration with Don Mills multi-platinum/diamond record producer Don Mills (Giveon, Snoh Allegra, Juice WRLD), Laura Welsh (Fifty Shades of Grey Soundtrack) and James Edgar, the track is another example of the sass and grit that spouts from Charles' impassioned stories and sound. The song has Bond-esque strings, courtesy of JUNO nominated producer/mixer Ryan Worsley who helped finish the production, that fill the chorus in tension and a throbbing bassline which provides a backdrop for the layered, harmonious vocals. Charles explains, "As a woman, there are many empowerment songs out there, but this one takes a more sassier approach saying – don't try me, don't test me". The track is highly empowering and rich in confidence. Charles has brought her distinct voice to various stages over the last several years - having performed notably at Reeperbahn Festival in Germany, making her UK debut in London, and making her US debut at the uber-coveted "It's A School Night" by personal invitation by tastemaker and KCRW radio host Chris Douridas. Over the last year, Charles shared the stage as direct support for some of Canada's musical icons – including Sam Roberts Band, Jann Arden and Stars.
