The town of Elkin, NC, boasts only 4000 residents, but its downtown seems to resemble a town much larger than that. What looks to me like a downtown about half the size of my home town of Shelby, NC, turns out to be a good bit less populated than its footprint suggests. But making a bigger impression than expected is in keeping with everything I have experienced in this foothills town in the northwest part of the state — Elkin likes to punch above its weight. My first trip to Elkin was for the Reevestock Music Festival, created by the band Time Sawyer, whose members largely grew up there. It is a festival that garners national artists as well as regional favorites, and every time I returned, it came up a winner: well balanced, with enough star power but also plenty of pleasant surprises and new discoveries, plus it was almost intimate with its crowd of hundreds rather than thousands in attendance. Elkin remains a favorite destination for that festival alone, and now I can add to that list, with The Martha Bassett Show producing live events at the Reeves Theater for eight years running. Martha Bassett celebrates with guests and house band at the finale of The Martha Bassett Show 04/03/25Photo: Steel String Photography The Martha Bassett Show put on its 100th episode in April of this year, which seemed like the perfect time to trek up and take it all in. The show featured guests Liz Longley from Nashville, Hank Pattie & the Current from the Triangle region of NC, and a VA music artist who is best known for building guitars for stars like Eric Clapton, Gillian Welch, Vince Gill, Peter Rowan (and hundreds of others, famous or not), Wayne Henderson. I spoke with both Martha Bassett and Wayne Henderson while there, where we talked with Martha about the extraordinary nature of the show with collaboration amongst its guests a built-in feature, the ever-changing and now perhaps especially challenging landscape for the arts, and with Wayne about his world famous instruments as well as memories of Doc Watson, and current Grand Ole Opry member and client Marty Stuart. All of that and a lot more is here, including musical excerpts from The Martha Bassett Show on this episode of Southern Songs and Stories. The Young Fables are a duo from Nashville recommended to me by their manger. Their manager happens to be the husband of one of my favorite artists (Liz Longley), so thank you Patryk Larney! He sent me their catalog for review and I felt like I had been missing out for years. All three records are super strong efforts. When Patryk gave me a sneak peak at a film about the writing of one of the songs included in our session, "Daddy's Girl", I knew I had to talk to them. The audio for the songs needed help and I got it from Sean Morse from The Mission Recording Studio. That's why they sound significantly better than the rest of the session. Same recording device as the interview, just in the hands of someone who knew what to do with them.Songs included:Drive (L. Lizzie No interviews Ken Yates!Ken Yates grew up in the college town of London, Ontario and he is truly Canada's Next Top Model, by which I mean he is wonderfully talented, disarmingly nice, and from Canada, obviously. Ken is a Berklee College of Music graduate, and I took the opportunity to talk with him about that experience. Why would somebody choose to go to music school, what were you hoping to gain, and what did you actually get out of it, are questions that are fascinating to me, and Ken's answers were super interesting. One takeaway I learned from his stories of Berklee is that even some of the most talented musicians feel like they have no idea what they're doing. Ken's breakout 2016 album, ‘Huntsville,' earned him the Emerging Artist of the Year award at the Canadian Folk Music awards. It was not just a huge and competitive honor, but it was also a defining moment where Ken started getting categorized as a folk artist. Ken released a beautiful album, ‘Quiet Talkers,' in 2020, and instead of touring in support of that album, he had to do a bunch of covid-era online shows. I was impressed with how gracious and level-headed he seemed despite the crappy circumstances. This grace, perspective, emotional openness, and flexibility, are a big part of what makes his new album, ‘Cerulean,' so special. ‘Cerulean' came out in 2022 and it bridges the gap between folk and indie rock, between skepticism and hope, between the pain of losing someone and the possibility of embracing what you have. ‘Cerulean' has a distinct groove, features vocals from Americana stars like Kathleen Edwards, Liz Longley, and Katie Pruitt, AND some of the prettiest production I've heard all year.Advertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brands

Liz Longley, the Nashville based singer songwriter and boss babe extrodinaire,  join Sarah and Wilson on the podcast for an inspiring conversation. Liz's story is a beautiful reminder to us all that success comes from leaning into who we are. Today on the show Liz talks all about her journey as an indie/sometimes signed artist, what it was like growing up with parents who are also entrepreneurs and her new record Funeral For My Past, which was 100% supported by her fans, aka “Lizards,” after she left her record deal.Liz also tells us about how how her definition of what it means to “make it” as evolved and changed as she has grown through the years and how experience has helped her pivot and grow during the pandemic.Get ready to be inspired! Music at Three Pines: The Podcast

Nashville's own Liz Longley sat down with me to talk pandemic management, songwriting, and her musical background. If you have not heard Liz, she is one of the best singer songwriters out there--writing insightful songs performed with a voice that will "wow" you. Her range and expression--on top of those great songs--combined with her grace and genuine concern for her fans explains why her most recent Kickstarter for her 2020 Funeral For My Past album made her the fourth highest funded female artist in Kickstarter history. If you listen to her, you will understand why. I would encourage you to pick up several of her albums, but absolutely this most recent one. It is a keeper. https://www.lizlongley.com/

Also, some good news!   Don’t forget to back the Rainbow Rodeo Kickstarter!   Album of the Week: Daniel Romano -- How Ill Thy World Is Ordered   This is a stunning album, with dense prophetic lyrics. Romano’s delivery is eerie and damning, songs that speak truth to power with Dylan-esque poetry -- but none of his vagaries. This album has genuine power, an electrifying energy that will send chills up your arms. And it’s Romano’s 10th of the year. Clearly he’s not running out of steam. A pioneer of open tunings, and an artist who raised over $100,000 in three hours. This is episode 27 of Caffe Lena : 60 Years of Song . Thank you to Sarah for helping to select the songs and artists for this feature. Mary McCaslin drew influence from a wide range of artists like Joan Baez and Joni Mitchell to the Beatles and The Bee Gees. Regarded as a pioneer in guitar open tunings, Mary’s versions of The Beatles’ “Blackbird” and The Who’s “Pinball Wizard” are noted for her claw hammer banjo accompaniment. As a country-folk singer she worked totally outside of the Nashville sphere, singing of prairies and Old West images. She was less active in the 80’s, perhaps only writing a few songs, and not releasing much music. However, it was in 1986 when she stopped at the Caffe. Liz Longley needed to raise about $45000 to obtain access to masters of her latest album. Even though she’s not a household name, Liz managed to raise $120,000 by drawing on her personal connection with fans. In doing

Tuesday’s show was bound to sell out because Berklee forces arrived with a couple hundred students, faculty and alumni and because their very distinguished alums Gillian Welch and Dave Rawlings asked if their performance and award presentation could be nested in a special Roots show. That means a lot to us, and both parties pulled out the stops to create one of the finest and most meaningful shows we’ve ever put on. Liz Longley has a song with a chorus that starts “You’ve got that way…” and wow, so does she. Armed with an acoustic guitar and her cool, smoky and nimble voice, she took the stage for our first set. The songs have become hits for me from repeated listening to her debut album. “Memphis” and “Bad Habit” are new soul folk standards. “Skin And Bones” has a darker Appalachian edge. Then it was on to a very different voice in Sierra Hull, with her musically entwined new string trio and songs from her fascinating new Weighted Mind album. After the title track we heard the baroque and intricate composed interplay of “Queen of Hearts/Royal Tea” (thank you Berklee training) and the silk pillow of a song that is “Lullaby.” We were only one song into Maureen Murphy’s set when Photographer Tony whispered to me that we were experiencing the finest singer in the show’s history. There’s a case to be made. I’ve rarely seen so much refinement and technique mingled with so much power and passion. Murphy delivered four very different songs with a rocking, versatile quartet, but the capstone was her ode to her singing idol Lisa Fisher “How Can I Ease The Pain.” The song’s free form gave Maureen ample ways to shape and craft and massage and emote. It was simply breathtaking in its range of textures, from delicate to forceful. And she got to hit a classic money note in Martin Sexton’s “Smoke.” It would have been difficult to pack more musical range or magic into 20 minutes. I’ve been watching Gillian and Dave perform for twenty years, and it’s always riveting. Certainly, seeing the MCR logo behind them was extra inspiring and gratifying. They opened with spectral unison singing on “The Way It Will Be,” making the harmonies of “The Way It Goes” and “Miss Ohio” all the more bloom-like. When Berklee President Roger Brown presented the school’s American Master Awards to them (as individuals by the way not a group), he cited Dave’s harmonically rich and inventive guitar playing. And yes, that’s one thing I’ve always loved about it – close, dissonant intervals delivered with bebop command and a staccato attack, like Bill Monroe downstrokes on Eddie Lang’s guitar. And on this night I got to be about 20 feet from his shredding solo on “Red Clay Halo,” one of my favorite Gill and Dave songs. Their final number “Everything Is Free” includes the line “we’re gonna do it anyway, even if it doesn’t pay,” and that’s how GW and DR always sounded to me. Their old friend T Bone Burnett, who collected the night’s other Master Award, played amiable electric guitar strokes and sang a bit on that final tune before adding a whole new verse about a certain orange presidential candidate in the rollicking Nashville Jam on “I’ll Fly Away.”

Born and Raised in London, Ontario, Ken Yates moved to Boston to study songwriting at Berklee College of Music. It was there that he developed his skills as a songwriter, releasing his first CD, “The Backseat EP”, and received the opportunity to play a song for one of his biggest influences, John Mayer. Mayer even posted a full page blog about Yates’ ability as a writer stating, “Ken Yates wrote a song called ‘I Don’t Wanna Fall In Love’… this song moved me when I first heard it and still does today”. Yates’ EP received high critical acclaim, leading to a slew of online covers from fans. He has toured with many notable names including veteran singer/songwriter and mentor, Livingston Taylor, Sister Hazel, Peter Katz, and Liz Longley and has songs in heavy rotation on Sirius XM’s The Coffee House where he was nominated for The Coffee House Songwriter Discovery of the Year. In the short time since her graduation from Boston’s renowned Berklee College of Music, singer-songwriter Liz Longley has assembled an impressive resume. While best known for her stop-you-in-your-tracks voice, Liz has steadily developed a reputation as an accomplished songwriter, crafting intimately personal portraits through her music. In the past two years, Liz has taken home top prizes at some of the most prestigious songwriting competitions in the country, including the BMI John Lennon Songwriting Scholarship Competition, the International Acoustic Music Awards and the Rocky Mountain Folk Fest Songwriting Competition. New England named her the 2011 Female Performer of the Year, the Washington Post declared that Liz is “destined for a larger audience” and Dig Boston called her “a rising acoustic sensation.” Even John Mayer is a fan, calling her music “gorgeous, simply gorgeous.” Most recently, Liz’s music has taken center stage on a national level with numerous television placements and radio airplay. ABC’s critically acclaimed series NY Med featured Liz’s music throughout the first season, and the 2012 season finale of Lifetime’s Army Wives displayed her towering vocals in an epic grand finale song, “This Is Not the End.” Executives at SiriusXM caught wind of her captivating cover of Van ...

Part two does start, eventually after about 12 seconds, sorry about that but there were technical problems with this one. Apoc told us the tale of a Canadian Xmas followed by the mighty Matt Stevens with his Xmas address. A great track Fearless by ITTO fave Paul Liddell then Repeat by Tommy Eye (ft Matt Diaper), Odin the Great by Defy 4, Unravelling from Liz Longley, a tune from me which you can download for a £1 by clicking here. Sarah Griffin bought us close to the end with her brilliant tune poet and the whole chaotic festive jumble was bought to an end by The Lost Boys and their cracking tune I don't want to be a Christmas Single. That's it for this year, the next podcast will hopefully go live in a couple of weeks so keep checking all the usual places. The new website is close to being completed. You can now catch up with podcast 15 to the present day now with each episode having it's own little player. Have a look around as it will be the new permanent home very soon. Hope you have a great time over the holiday and I'll be back in the new year. BYE!

A hardworking young folksinger with an impressive pedigree -- educated at Berklee College of Music and co-winner of the 2009 Mountain Stage New Song Contest, among many other honors -- Liz Longley is particularly highly regarded for her personal, emotionally engaging songwriting. Longley has already opened for the likes of Nanci Griffith and Shawn Colvin, but she takes one of her highest-profile stages yet when she performs live at the Newport Folk Festival in Newport, R.I. Expect to hear songs from her brand-new album, 'Hot Loose Wire.'
