In this episode of Hearts of Oak, I welcome back Todd Bensman as he prepares to join the administration to tackle immigration challenges. Todd shares insights on the dramatic shifts in border enforcement since the Trump administration, including the decline in daily crossings and the need for increased deportations amid legal and infrastructure hurdles. We discuss the complexities of federal agency coordination, strategies against drug cartels related to the fentanyl crisis, and the role of tariffs to encourage Mexican cooperation. As Todd transitions to a policy advisor role, he reflects on navigating the political landscape within the Republican party while aiming for meaningful immigration reforms that balance national security with economic factors. Todd Bensman is an investigative author of the 2023 book OVERRUN, How Joe Biden Unleashed the Greatest Border Crisis in U.S. History (Posthill Press/Bombardier Books) and also America's Covert Border War: The Untold Story of the Nation's Battle to Prevent Jihadist Infiltration (Posthill Press/Bombardier Books, February 2021).   The two-time National Press Club award winner, a former journalist of 23 years, currently serves as the Texas-based Senior National Security Fellow for the Center for Immigration Studies (CIS), a Washington, D.C. policy institute for which he writes, speaks, and grants media interviews about the nexus between immigration and national security. He frequently reports from the southern border, traveling widely inside Mexico and in Central America. He has testified before Congress as an expert witness and regularly appears on radio and television outlets to discuss illegal immigration and border security matters.   He writes about homeland security and terrorism subjects for Newsweek Magazine, Homeland Security Today, The New York Post, The Daily Mail, Townhall, The Federalist, the Investigative Project on Terrorism, SpyTalk, The Daily Wire, The National Interest, and other publications. He serves as a Writing Fellow for the Middle East Forum and also teaches terrorism, intelligence analysis, and journalism as a university adjunct lecturer.   For nearly a decade prior to joining CIS in August 2018, Bensman led counterterrorism intelligence for the Texas Department of Public Safety's Intelligence and Counterterrorism Division and its multi-agency fusion center. Before his homeland security service, Bensman worked as a reporter for more than two decades, covering national security after 9/11 as an investigative staff writer for major newspapers.   Contact Todd at news@toddbensman.com and sign up for his newsletter to receive alerts when new columns and reports publish. According to Newsweek Magazine, during a recent interview with NBC News’ Kristen Welker, President Trump spoke about the state of the Democratic Party and said, "I can't name one Democrat, I mean, I look at the Democrats. They're in total disarray. They have a new person named Crockett. I watched her speak the other day. She's definitely a low IQ person. And they said she's the future of the party." In response, Texas Democratic Congresswoman Jasmine Crockett wrote on X: "For you to be in charge of the WHOLE country, you sure do have my name in your mouth a lot. Every time you say my name, you're reminding the world that you're terrified of smart, bold Black women telling the truth and holding you accountable. So keep talking..."Steve Harvey Morning Show Online: http://www.steveharveyfm.com/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, the first female elected head of state in an African nation and Nobel Peace Prize Laureate joins Mike Shanley to discuss the role of aid donors, localization, and women and development. This episode was recorded live at the Society for International Development-US Annual Dinner on 13 November 2024.   BIOGRAPHY: Internationally known as Africa's “Iron Lady,” President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf is a leading promoter of peace, justice and democratic rule. She grew up in the Liberian capital of Monrovia, where she married and had four sons. President Johnson Sirleaf later moved to the United States where she earned an accounting degree from the Madison College of Business and a Masters Degree in Public Administration from Harvard University's Kennedy School of Government. In her efforts to bring justice to her people in Liberia, she has spent more than a year in jail at the hands of the military dictatorship of General Samuel Doe and had her life threatened by former President Charles Taylor. She campaigned relentlessly for Taylor's removal from office and played an active and supportive role in the Transitional Government of Liberia as the country prepared for elections in October of 2005. President Johnson Sirleaf was a presidential candidate in the 1997 Liberia general election where she finished second in the field of 13. Before that, she served for five years as Assistant Administrator and Director of the Regional Bureau for Africa of the United Nations Development Program as Assistant Secretary General of the United Nations and was the first woman to lead the United Nations Development Project for Africa. She served as the Chairperson of the Governance Reform Commission of the National Transitional Government of Liberia until she resigned in March 2004 to accept the nomination of the Unity Party of Liberia as the party's leader. In November 2005, President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf was elected President of Liberia and became the first woman to lead an African nation. In the elections she defeated popular world-class soccer star George Weah with an impressive 59.4 percent of the vote. In October 2007, President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the United States' highest civil award, for her personal courage and unwavering commitment to expanding freedom and improving the lives of people in Liberia and across Africa. And in 2010, as the only female and African Head of State, President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf was named by Newsweek Magazine as one of the World Top Ten Leaders.   LEARN MORE Thank you for tuning into this episode of the Aid Market Podcast. Countdown with Keith Olbermann

SERIES 3 EPISODE 55: COUNTDOWN WITH KEITH OLBERMANN A-Block (1:44) SPECIAL COMMENT: The obvious problem with John Kelly going on the record and saying yes, I heard Trump say quote “I need the kind of generals that Hitler had” is that a huge number of his supporters will applaud it. And the obvious problem with Jeffrey Goldberg of The Atlantic quoting those who were there as Trump was told the cost of the funeral he'd offered to pay for, for a murdered U-S soldier named Vanessa Guillen, and Trump screamed “It doesn't cost 60-thousand bucks to bury an effing Mexican!” is that even MORE of Trump's supporters will applaud THAT. Because the real, disgusting, nauseating truth behind the revelations in the Goldberg Atlantic piece is that it touches the third and FOURTH rails of Donald Trump's America: many of his people believe whoever is in charge SHOULD be supported by and in fact kept in power by “the kind of generals Hitler had.” The antisemites in the Trump cult love it. And the ones who aren't antisemites just authoritarians love it even if they're queasy about the antisemitism. And the ones who aren't antisemites or authoritarians but have always secretly believed the word “Democracy” was just another brand name or FLAVOR love it because it posits a kind of America not just where MIGHT makes RIGHT, but where ONLY might makes right. And if there is anybody missing from the Trump Coalition of Evil, anybody who ISN'T inspired by “I need the kind of generals that Hitler had” they are certainly covered by “It doesn't cost 60,000 bucks to bury an effing Mexican” because if violence and militarism are the Trumpian third rail, racism and specifically anti-Hispanic racism are the FOURTH rail. MEANWHILE:19% of Republicans think if Trump loses he should just seize power (28% of Mormon Americans). The latest great polling numbers for Kamala Harris? In July she was getting less than half of voters under 35. She's now getting 60% And it sounds ridiculous: Ex-Flamenco Correspondent and Trump concierge judge Aileen Cannon as Attorney General?  Honestly - how much more could she do for Trump than Merrick Garland has? B-Block (26:29) THE WORST PERSONS IN THE WORLD: Jeremy Peters of The New York Times says on MSNBC (with help from Katy Tur) that Kamala Harris is not as clear in her speaking as is Trump. Newsweek Magazine isn't certain if that photo of Trump in a Pittsburgh Steelers 100 pounds lighter and 40 years younger MIGHT BE A FAKE. And Trump's own campaign can't spell "Steelers" - and in a very Freudian way. C-Block (36:05) THINGS I PROMISED NOT TO TELL: More of my atypical World Series previews: Why I'm adopting ex-Yankees manager Ralph Houk's attitude towards the team he, like I, grew up with: "Piss on the Yankees."See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Before writer-director Philip Kaufman brought Tom Wolfe's best-selling book to the big screen in 1983, astronauts in movies were often just alien hunters or asteroid chasers. But under Kaufman's direction, spaceflight became a deeply human endeavor, focusing on inner strength rather than external threats. This 80s flick, which runs for over three hours and features an unconventional structure, tells the story of test pilots like Chuck Yeager and Gordon Cooper as they break the sound barrier and America ventures into the “Space Race” with Russia. Kaufman himself described it as “the longest movie ever made without a plot.” So get ready to take flight and orbit Earth as Tim Williams and guest co-hosts Jeff Atkins, Ben Carpenter, and Darby Mirocha discuss “The Right Stuff” from 1983 on this episode of the 80s Flick Flashback Podcast. Here are some additional behind-the-scenes trivia we were unable to cover on this episode: Some were concerned that when this film was released it would help propel John Glenn, then a U.S. Senator from Ohio, into the Presidency. Newsweek Magazine had a cover story about it. Although Glenn ran for President in 1984, he lost the Democratic nomination to Walter Mondale. It is a thrill and honor to have John Ferak return to the show with this amazing update! Updated 5th Anniversary Edition Including Exclusive Interview with Steve Avery In 2016-17, while working for the USA TODAY NETWORK's Wisconsin Investigative Team, author John Ferak wrote dozens of articles examining the murder case against Steven Avery, who had already beaten one wrongful conviction only to be charged again with the murder of Teresa Halbach in 2005. This case captured global attention through the Netflix documentary "Making A Murderer." In this anniversary edition of WRECKING CREW: Demolishing the Case Against Steven Avery, Ferak not only lays out in meticulous detail the post-conviction strategy of Kathleen Zellner, the high-profile, high-octane lawyer fighting to free Avery but also includes a new "Five Years Later" section. This update provides fresh insights and developments in Avery's ongoing legal battle. Additionally, this special edition features an exclusive epilogue: a November 2023 interview with Steven Avery. For this book, Zellner, arguably America's most successful wrongful conviction attorney, granted Ferak unprecedented access to the exhaustive pro bono efforts she and her small suburban Chicago law firm have invested in a man she believes to be wrongfully ensnared by Manitowoc County's unscrupulous justice system. This anniversary edition offers new revelations and a comprehensive look at a case that continues to stir public debate and demand justice. "John Ferak is an investigative journalist who is trying to figure out who committed the murder. He takes all of my evidence, expert opinions and theories and really examines them in detail. [Making a Murderer] touched on some of my investigation and expert experiments but not in as much detail as the book. The series explores many collateral matters, while the book zeroes-in on suspects and motives for the murder, which was not a focal point in the series.” —Attorney Kathleen Zellner, interview with Newsweek Magazine "Whatever you thought you believed about this infamous case, get ready to change your mind or be more convinced than ever. … Fascinating." —New York Times bestselling author Steve Jackson "If you're planning to binge-watch Making a Murderer 2 over the holidays, order John Ferak's new book Wrecking Crew, too. Definitive chronicle of criminal justice corruption in Manitowoc County." —Michelle Malkin, host of Michelle Malkin Investigates on CRTV.

"Challenge the status quo!" The executives we work with shout this from rooftops with their teams. "Business as usual" means a slow decline toward irrelevancy. The reality is that a business that isn't growing in some way is in decline and shrinking the value it's bringing to the world. And "growth" doesn't always mean revenue, profit, and headcount. Growth in rate of change; growth in technical capabilities; growth in integration; growth in project management skills. These are all forms of valid growth too. "Growth" also means that some things do stay the same to create stability. While we tend to encounter leaders who NEED and WANT growth, their everyday habits reward compliance — until sh*t hits the fan. Listen in to Wally's lessons as a longtime CEO to reward challenging the status quo now. The full blog post can be found here: https://stefaniekrievins.com/challenge-the-status-quo-business-as-usual-is-dangerous-with-wally-brant/. About Wally Brant and Indiana Oxygen Wally Brant is the CEO and owner of Indiana Oxygen Company, a 108-year-old, four-generation, family-owned company.  Indiana Oxygen manufactures and distributes industrial, medical, and research laboratory gases and related welding and safety equipment and has branch stores/production facilities in fourteen (14) Indiana cities and two (2) in Ohio. Its online subsidiary, weldingsuppliesfromioc.com, has consistently been voted top welding supply online store by Newsweek Magazine each of the past five years.  Online sales account for 25% of Indiana Oxygen's total annual revenue, which exceeds $90 Million.    A graduate of Purdue University, Wally served seven (7) years in the U.S. Air Force as a Navigator on a B-52 Combat Crew, flying missions in S.E. Asia during the Vietnam War.  He later served in the Air Force Reserves, attaining the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.  In 1982, Wally was named CEO of Indiana Oxygen Company.  He is a recipient of numerous awards, including the “Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year” and is a “Purdue University Distinguished Graduate.”  In 2018 at the age of 68 Wally graduated from the University of Notre Dame with his MBA Graduate Degree.

You read that right! Too often we thing when we struggle, have stress and anxiety, there is something WRONG with us! That we might have a mental illness…but what if it was actually something else entirely? Dr. Sasha Heinz is not only BRILLIANT, she will help you see things in a completely different way! We start out by talking about self-compassion, but we quickly turn into a conversation like I've never had before. I'll be forever changed from it.  Dr. Heinz talks about how we, as women, as moms, are socialized to prioritize other's needs - ok, nothing new here…but she goes on to talk about how when we feel threatened, we revert back to our survival instincts of fight or flight BUT women, move into “tend and befriend”. It's a completely different way of responding to stress than men.  Here's the best part! We can evolve past this! We are just stuck in a developmental stage as adults and with some internal work, we can be free of these disempowering behaviors! We can become people who consider others' opinions but aren't ruled by them.   There is so much more in this episode I know you'll love! A native of Hong Kong, Henry Wong has lived in the U.S. since attending high school at St. John's Preparatory School in Minnesota. He attended Penn State University as a Biology major, and worked in a neurology lab at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. In 1990, his hobby took over, and he founded the trendsetting record store An die Musik in Towson. It was the first in the nation to sell CDs without the long cardboard boxes and the first to establish listening stations for any disc in the store, earning them such attention as an article in Newsweek Magazine. He also established partnerships with organizations that contracted him to sell CDs during their performance, including the BSO and Baltimore Opera Company, and in DC with the Kennedy Center, Blues Alley and many Embassies. In addition, he staged regular CD signings and live performances and refreshments in the retail store.Reacting to changes in the retail music industry, he moved the business to Mt. Vernon in 1997, and added live music presentations under the moniker An Die Musik Live. The venue is an intimate listening room on the second floor of an historic Baltimore townhouse, located in the heart of the Mt. Vernon Cultural District. Voted several times as one of the top 100 jazz venues in the world by Downbeat Magazine, An die Musik Live has presented over 4,500 shows.Long before the current pandemic, Wong has had to innovate and re-engineer the business in response to economic and social challenges, including increased competition by big box retailers, 9/11, music downloading, the housing market bust, and Baltimore's civil unrest. By always operating as part of the community—and in service to musicians—people have rallied around his efforts to remain a vibrant part of Baltimore's arts scene. His latest innovation is adapting his business to live streaming concerts. He has relied on friends, consulted tech industry leaders, and recruited Peabody Institute sound engineering graduate students to create the model and continually improve it. But it's more than just a way to remain open for business—he encourages audience members to add donations to further help the artists. In addition, he has been consulted by other arts organizations who are navigating the same challenges.Image creditCreators & Guests Rob Lee - Host Henry Wong - Guest The Truth In This Art, hosted by Rob Lee, explores contemporary art and cultural preservation through candid conversations with artists, curators, and cultural leaders about their work, creative processes and the thinking that goes into their creativity. Also, Rabbi Leder explains how hugs help us demonstrate trust, express empathy, and affirm each other's humanity.(00:31:18) Death as a teacher. Despite Rabbi Leder's long experience of dealing with the dying and their grieving relatives, he admits that only the experience of looking at his own father's body made him finally realize that he, too, was going to die. As a mourner rather than a rabbi, he reveals how his experience of bereavement changed his life for the better and helped make him a better husband, father, and human being.(00:38:57) The transmigration of the soul. Rabbi Leder shares his stories of witnessing the sense of peace that comes over the dying as the energy of the soul leaves the body and is transformed into an unknown but continuing force.(00:53:01) The indefinable nature of God. We discuss the meaning of God's ‘ I Will Be Who I Will Be' statement to Moses, and Rabbi Leder points out that the phrase is deliberately vague since the true nature of divinity and cosmic justice is just too powerful and complex for human beings to understand. (01:04:38) Gratitude. Rabbi Leder encourages us to count our blessings and keep going until we reach a hundred! In particular, he reminds us to be grateful for even the smallest of things and celebrate all the abundance and beauty in our lives.

On November 10, 1975, a storm passed over Lake Superior. Initially thought to be a minor weather disturbance, it soon turned into a gale, complete with 100-knot winds, 35-foot rogue waves, and heavy snow. When the ore carrier SS Edmund Fitzgerald was caught in the worst of the weather, she made for Whitefish Bay, Michigan, before vanishing off radar without a single distress call. On this episode, we're discussing the unique dangers of Great Lakes shipping, as well as taconite ore, Gordon Lightfoot, and one of the strangest shipwrecks we've ever come across. With everything going on in the world recently, we've likely all thought to ourselves at some point, "Is humanity lost?" You are not alone if the news makes you feel like everything is hopeless, and it's fair to wonder if collective and individual hope in empathy, compassion, and humanity will ever be restored. As we move forward past the darkest days of the COVID-19 outbreak, many people are still searching for hope, inspiration, and answers to some big questions like: How do you regain access to empathy? Or what truly matters in life in the end? And I can't think of a better person to explore these questions with than my guest today, Rabbi Steve Leder. He is a graduate of Northwestern University and was ordained at Hebrew Union College, and he currently serves as the Senior Rabbi of Wilshire Boulevard Temple in Los Angeles. He's also a writer and the author of several critically acclaimed books, including his best-seller, More Beautiful Than Before: How Suffering Transforms Us, and his latest book, For You When I'm Gone: 12 Essential Questions to Tell a Life Story. His compassionate voice and words of wisdom have earned Rabbi Leder recognition as one of Newsweek Magazine's ten most influential rabbis in America — twice. In this revealing conversation, we explore his views on humanity, death, religion, and what makes a good life well-lived.Rabbi Leder shares his interesting thoughts on why people leave the church, what he believes to be the true single source of evil, and how we can all get back to living in alignment with our values and also how to create a powerful curation of beliefs and stories to share with others he calls your ethical will. There are so many good nuggets to take away from this conversation, so I hope you're in a position to jot down Rabbi Leder's words of wisdom today. You can find Rabbi Steve at: Website | InstagramIf you LOVED this episode you'll also love the conversations we had with Bishop Michael Curry about the role of love in faith and life.Check out our offerings & partners: My New Book Sparked | My New Podcast SPARKEDVisit Our Sponsor Page For a Complete List of Vanity URLs & Discount Codes.Ritual: Committed to creating the purest, most effective formulations for everyday health, and sharing every ingredient, source & scientist behind our products. My guest this week is criminal defense attorney Joel Schwartz. He is the attorney who represented Russ Faria in the case that has become an NBC 6 part series ratings darling titled, "The Thing about Pam" starring Rene Zellweger (as Pam Hupp) and Josh Duhamel (as Joel Schwartz). Joel has written the book Bone Deep that takes readers through the perfect storm of miscalculations and missteps that led to an innocent man's conviction—and recounts Schwartz's successful battle to have that conviction overturned. Joel has been speaking to sold out audiences all over the nation that can't get enough of this story. He has appeared on Dateline NBC, 60 Minutes, CBS Morning News, CNN, Fox News and countless local television news affiliates. Joel went to undergraduate and law school at the University of Texas, Austin. He has a bit of an entrepreneur streak in him. While he was an undergraduate at UT, he created the popular "Men of Texas" calendar that landed him on the cover of Newsweek Magazine. After finishing law school, Joel headed to Hollywood to be an actor. He came home to St. Louis for a visit, and never went back to Los Angeles. He said he would give law a try for a year, and now 33 years later he is Principal Partner in the nationally respected Law Firm of Rosenblum, Schwartz, and Fry. On top of all of that, he has his own band, JFB, where he is the lead guitarist and singer. Joel is a family man with a wife and 3 kids who has a passion for making a difference with everything he goes to do. Joel is the criminal defense attorney you would want fighting by your side if you find yourself in a nightmare. In a perfect world, there would be a criminal defense attorney cloning machine making 100's of Joel Schwartz clones. He is definitely one of the good guys! --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app
