This episode features my conversation with drummer, Josh Trager.  Originally from Montreal and currently based in Toronto, Josh is an accomplished musician who established a professional career after studying at the Berklee College of Music.  At the age of 20, he was personally selected by guitar legend Frank Marino to join the band Mahogany Rush and held that position until 2005. Josh is best known as the drummer for the platinum selling Sam Roberts Band and has continued to record and tour with the band for 2 decades. In our conversation, we talk about how Josh discovered his passion for music and how his experiences at the Berklee College Of Music helped him adapt and establish his professional career.  We also talk about anxiety and how we can begin to change our mindset to overcome challenges we may be facing.  Photo by Daniel D'Souza Follow Josh: https://www.instagram.com/jtrager24/ https://www.facebook.com/joshtrager

The Groovy Guys are back with another confounding vinyl challenge series. This are about to heat up in the Groove Lounge, because we're taking on the Seven Deadly Sins. Each episode will tackle one sin. The Groovy Guys will each present a record from their collection and plead their case as to why it best fits the theme. At the end of each episode we will cast our votes - 3 pts for 1st, 2 pts for second, 1 Pt for third. We can't vote for our own pick. The pick with the most points wins that episode. And for our sins, we made the challenge a little harder by trying our damndest not to feature any artists that have been on the pod before. So sorry if you come here for the Beatles, Zeppelin, Stones, ACDC, KGLW or Sam Roberts Band. In episode one of this series, we're talking about GREED. The albums the Groovers have chosen are Metallica - Master of Puppets, Kiss - Destroyer, Notorious B.I.G. - Life After Death and Rage Against the Machine - Evil Empire. This week we welcome Jordan Sokel of PRESSING STRINGS. Pressings Strings lends credence to my feeling of never missing opening bands. I saw the band take an audience to a place they were not expecting to go, right to the merch table to purchase everything they could from the band.  Pressing Strings first formed in 2006 while Sokel was still in college. The band officially debuted in 2008 with their album, Where We Are, and now has a deep catalog that includes the albums Episodes (2010), Pressing Strings (2012), Life of a Tree (2013), Owe the Source (2015), and Settle In (2020) as well as two EPs, Most of Us (2016) and Morning Takes (2021). As Pressing Strings built up their impressive live show and paid their dues gigging, their fame was spreading throughout the entire Eastern Seaboard, leading to headlining venues across Maryland and Washington, DC and frequent festival appearances at Peach Music Festival, Firefly, Sweetwater 420 Fest, Floydfest, and more. Over the last decade, Pressing Strings has also toured and opened for the likes of The Beach Boys, Gov't Mule, Toad the Wet Sprocket, JJ Grey & Mofro, Rachael Yamagata, Neal Francis, The Toadies, Jerry Douglas, Sam Roberts Band, Michael Glabicki (Rusted Root), Rayland Baxter, and Junior Marvin of the Wailers. In addition to their touring success and amassing over 6 million streams, radio has also taken notice, with national AAA and public broadcasters across the U.S. eagerly embracing Pressing Strings and taking them to the top of their charts.PRESSING STRINGS - "And I For You"        OUT NOW!!!Thanks for listening!!! What stood out about Eric's story - aside from his tenures at entertainment powerhouses like Cirque du Soleil and Just For Laughs - was the lessons he learned from the record label (Grenadine Records) that he started in University and ran for six years. If he could go back in time, he said he wouldn't have been so strict with what the record label had to be. They were "after" two sounds, and it restricted their progress. In the early days, Sam Roberts Band's manager came to them, and even though they loved the songs that would eventually be on Sam Roberts' first EP, they decided to pass on it. It didn't fit what they were trying to create. How often do we try to make things fit with who we think we should be? And who we think we should be is many times influenced by others and not ourselves. Another key part of the conversation was Eric leaving Quebec to move to Vancouver for family reasons. He knew three people in Vancouver, was leaving a dream job and didn't know how his skillset would fit into Vancouver. He was even told that Vancouver is a "production town", not a content sales and distribution "town", and there are no jobs for you here. But Eric persevered and has gone on to launch "And Now Global", the Global VID Podcast and helps his hometown BIA program and facilitate the White Rock 5 Corners Buskers & Comedy Festival.Eric is the founder of Greater Vancouver's international TV/Digital distribution & development consulting company "And Now Global" and brings over 15 years of content sales experience with major brands Just For Laughs and Cirque du Soleil, where his primary focus has been on Foreign TV & VOD sales (over 4000 TV hours licensed in over 100 countries).Eric's LinkedIn profileAndNowGlobal.com

Join my conversation with Nuela Charles. The 3x JUNO-Award nominated Nuela Charles is an alternative/soul singer-songwriter known for her soulful vocals and captivating stage presence, solidifying herself as a Canadian music staple. Born in Kenya, raised in Switzerland, Canada and the Bahamas before settling in Canada, Charles' music is infused with her multicultural upbringing, giving a fresh and diverse flare to her sound. Accompanying her latest single "Space," is the addition of "Nerve" - a collaboration with Don Mills multi-platinum/diamond record producer Don Mills (Giveon, Snoh Allegra, Juice WRLD), Laura Welsh (Fifty Shades of Grey Soundtrack) and James Edgar, the track is another example of the sass and grit that spouts from Charles' impassioned stories and sound. The song has Bond-esque strings, courtesy of JUNO nominated producer/mixer Ryan Worsley who helped finish the production, that fill the chorus in tension and a throbbing bassline which provides a backdrop for the layered, harmonious vocals. Charles explains, "As a woman, there are many empowerment songs out there, but this one takes a more sassier approach saying – don't try me, don't test me". The track is highly empowering and rich in confidence. Charles has brought her distinct voice to various stages over the last several years - having performed notably at Reeperbahn Festival in Germany, making her UK debut in London, and making her US debut at the uber-coveted "It's A School Night" by personal invitation by tastemaker and KCRW radio host Chris Douridas. Over the last year, Charles shared the stage as direct support for some of Canada's musical icons – including Sam Roberts Band, Jann Arden and Stars. This week, we're joined by David Neiwert, the author of Red Pill, Blue Pill: How to Counteract the Conspiracy Theories That Are Killing Us, to talk about the heartbreak of losing a loved one to the QAnon cult--or down similar rabbit holes--and why it's so difficult to bring them back to the real world. This is something that social psychologists really need to figure out, because these conspiracy theories are ripping our society apart.    And then we welcome Rep. John Sarbanes (D-MD) to tell us about the comprehensive package of democratic reforms that he introduced in Congress, H.R. 1, the For The People Act. We talk about what this much-needed bill would do, and how he hopes his colleagues in the Senate might get it passed in the narrowly divided upper chamber.   PlaylistMaggie Lindemann: "Knife Under My Pillow"Jack Sheldon: "I'm Just a Bill"Sam Roberts Band: "All of Us"

"I Like The Way You Talk About The Future" With the U.S. Presidential election wrapping up, Alex admits the week-long process of declaring a winner left him feeling pretty drained. Although therapeutic remedies were manifold, he found the easiest way to calm his nerves was to talk to a Canadian. The Canadian in question? Sam Roberts. The Quebec-born singer/songwriter has just put out his new album All Of Us and in this conversation he talks to Alex about how he writes songs, why renting a cabin to be creative only results in doing cabiny things, the limitations of putting a new album out during a pandemic and what it's like being a misty-eyed middle aged dad. Thoughtful, funny and honest, Roberts is one of the most engaging guys around and his new album is one of the year's very best.

This week on The Richard Crouse Show Podcast we are joined by Sam Roberts who joins us via Zoom from his home in Montreal. His band, the aptly named Sam Roberts Band has been nominated for fourteen Juno Awards, they’ve won six, including Artist of the Year twice. They’ve been very busy since the world pressed pause back in March.  The band’s song ‘We’re All in this Together’ became an anthem of sorts for various promos featuring frontline workers and Canadians alike. They put the finishing touches on their new album and played a part in each and every charitable opportunity they could to help artists and Canadians across the board. Sam Roberts Band have a new album called ‘All of Us’, the first in 4 years Then, Ethan Lou is a journalist whose work has appeared in in the Globe and Mail, the Guardian, the Toronto Star, the Walrus and the Washington Post. He has broken stories about the Canadian spy agency’s secret briefing to parliament, the snubbing of Sri Lanka by the country’s prime minister and the possible non-depiction of the future King Charles on Canadian bank notes. This year was supposed to see the publication of his first book, "Once a Bitcoin Miner: Scandal and Turmoil in the Cryptocurrency Wild West" but the pandemic pushed that release date into next year… but he still has a book in stores right now. It’s called Field Notes from a "Pandemic: A Journey Through a World Suspended" and was inspired by two articles he wrote for MacLeans magazine after a January visit with his ailing grandfather in Beijing allowed him to witness the very earliest stages of a COVID-19,  a virus he says, will forever change the world as we know it. The book says that over decades, globalization has crafted a world painfully sensitive and susceptible to shocks such as this pandemic… and examines the virus's beginnings and how it spread and the unprecedented measures to contain it.  He also looks at past pandemics in other crises and how they shaped the world--and has an argument for why this one's different. "Field Notes from a Pandemic: A Journey Through a World Suspended" is a timely look at how the virus has transformed the world.

It’s a self titled record of sorts, that for lack of a better term is kind of a revealing moment in his career which has come with some high acclaim both here in Canada and the US and overseas. The music is expansive, thoughtful, full of huge catchy hooks that are at the same time beautiful and a really fun listen. He also unleashes some incredible guitar playing to boot.
