In this episode, I talk to Dr Oliver Double. Dr Double is an academic and was previously an accomplished stand-up comedian who regularly played the circuit and created Sheffield's longest running comedy club, The Last Laugh. Since 1999, he has been based at the University of Kent School of Arts, teaching and researching comic and popular performance.  He has written several books and has helped to establish The British Stand Up Comedy Archive (BSUCA).  Dr Double is also the regular compere of the Funny Rabbit Comedy Club performing at the Gulbenkian Theatre, Canterbury.  I first saw Dr Double at the Edinburgh Fringe in 2015 where he interviewed Jo Brand and Alexei Sayle for his Talking Comedy series.  I visited the Bristol Slapstick Festival in 2023 where Double was a guest of Robin Ince talking about the books of Monty Python.  In 2023, I visited twice the BSUCA, where I watched Double compere a Funny Rabbit Comedy night, and I am very proud to say that the comedians' interviews featured in my podcast are being added to the Archive collection.  Thank you so much for listening to my podcast, if you like what you hear, please subscribe and I hope you enjoy the interview. Nostalgia Interviews with Chris Deacy

It was a pleasure this week to interview Olly Double, Reader in Drama and Head of Comedy and Popular Performance at the University of Kent where he has been based since 1999. We talk about how his work in stand up emanates from his time as a Drama student in Exeter. Olly grew up in Lincolnshire where his father was an Education Officer and we learn why as a child Olly was frightened of ‘Scooby Doo’ and ghosts as well as what his reaction was when he had a ‘Dr. Who’ book signed by Tom Baker. The conversation moves on to discuss the difference between public profile and personal personae with celebrities, especially in the case of those who have been discredited, and we learn about Olly’s nostalgia for the music of old TV themes. Olly shares his thoughts about working in Higher Education and why he sees himself as an anti-hierarchical person in a profession which is quite hierarchical. He tells us why he’s someone who is uncomfortable with unearned respect and about how he is on a journey like his students, just at a different level. Pop music had a massive influence on Olly when he was growing up, e.g. when watching The Boomtown Rats on ‘Top of the Pops’, and we learn why he’s into synth music and Dead Kennedys. Olly also reminisces about the time when he queued up in the rain for, and missed the beginning of, 'Planet of the Apes', as well as about how 'The Omen' made him rethink what he’d grown up believing in the Church of England. In the final part of the interview we share our experiences of going to see Jim Davidson on stage, which leads to a wider discussion about prejudice and politics, and we learn whether Olly is a looking back or a looking forward type of person. Please note: Opinions expressed are solely those of Chris Deacy and Olly Double and do not necessarily represent the views or opinions of the University of Kent.

Jonathan Sayer of Mischief Theatre, classicist and stand-up Natalie Haynes and Dr Oliver Double of the University of Kent attempt to answer an eternal question: why is the unfortunate mishap hilarious - so long as someone else is falling off the ladder?Damien Hirst has just announced that he is scaling back business activities, including laying off 50 staff, to focus on making art. This news coincided with a recent report into the value of Hirst's work, which found that the artworks he sold at auction in 2008, had plummeted in value when resold. Art market journalist Georgina Adam explains what this all might mean for the artist. Andre Aciman, whose first novel Call Me By Your Name, was turned into an Oscar winning film, discusses his latest novel Enigma Variations, which charts the life and loves of one man from adolescence through adulthood. In the first in an occasional series looking at the way the way in which the arts can positively impact on people's mental well being, Stig Abell talks to Laura Freeman about her book The Reading Cure in which she describes “the chaos, misery and misrule of an anorexic's thinking”, and how she overcame it. Aged 24 she read Charles Dickens's Christmas Carol and describes how continuing to read about food in fiction gave her the inspiration to start enjoying food again and became the pathway to a fuller and richer life. In his uncompromisingly frank humour he took on organized religion, government, jingoism, capitalism, the death penalty, war, and sexual mores. But he was eventually destroyed by the battle he fought with the US justice system. The comedian, Ray Peacock nominates Lenny Bruce as his great life as he regards him as a pioneer in stand-up. Along with expert Dr Oliver Double and presenter Matthew Parris they uncover a controversial life. To illustrate the life of Lenny Bruce this programme does play some audio which some listeners may find offensive. The producer is Perminder Khatkar.
