Join us for Hammer's Hands of the Ripper, a 1971 British horror film released as the second half of a double feature with Twins of Evil. Directed by Peter Sasdy, produced by Aida Young, and written by L.W. Davidson from a story by Edward Spencer Shew. Making good use of the large Baker Street set at Pinewood Studios—left over from The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes—the production was denied permission to film its final scenes at St. Paul's Cathedral, so a replica was constructed instead. If the Pritchards' home and staircase look familiar, it's because Hammer's ever-resourceful set designers reused elements from The Curse of Frankenstein years earlier (see episode 2 of our podcast for more on that classic). Director Peter Sasdy, who cited Hands of the Ripper as his favourite film, also directed the original Adrian Mole TV series (both The Secret Diary and The Growing Pains), three episodes of Hammer House of Horror, and two other Hammer features: Countess Dracula and Taste the Blood of Dracula (the latter coming to the podcast later this year, hopefully). Most monumentally, he directed the legendary BBC sci-fi thriller The Stone Tape (definitely check General Witchfinders number 5—our third most popular episode to date!). Eric Porter stars as Doctor Pritchard. Renowned for his work in film, television, and theatre, he famously played Professor Moriarty opposite Jeremy Brett's Sherlock Holmes and Soames Forsyte in The Forsyte Saga. Angharad Rees plays Anna, the daughter of the Ripper. She appeared in Boon (take a drink), starred as Demelza in 28 episodes of Poldark, and, the year after Hands of the Ripper, featured in Under Milk Wood alongside Richard Burton, Peter O'Toole, and Elizabeth Taylor. She was made a Fellow of the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama, had a pub named after her in Pontypridd (sadly now a card shop), and founded a Knightsbridge jewellery company, Angharad. Pieces she designed were featured in Elizabeth: The Golden Age. Wikipedia also notes she was once in a relationship with Alan Bates, which we mention only to plug episode 35, where we talked about The Shout.Lynda "Nurse Gladys Emmanuel" Baron appears as Long Liz—a curious name choice considering Long Liz was an actual canonical Ripper victim. Here, she's depicted alive and well (at least initially), years after Saucy Jack's supposed demise. Baron appeared as a recurring character in both Coronation Street and EastEnders, and played three different characters in Doctor Who across three Doctors.Dora Bryan turns up as Mrs Golding, one of two clairvoyants in the film. You may know her from 50 episodes of Last of the Summer Wine, Boon (drink), or as Helen in A Taste of Honey (written by Jon's mum's mate Shelagh Delaney). She (Dora, not Shelagh) also appeared in both a Carry On and a St Trinian's.Lastly, Norman Bird pops up as the Police Inspector. If he looks familiar, it's because he had over 200 TV and 60 film roles. He was in Spywatch (as Mr Jenkins), Boon (drink), Woof!, Whack-O!, and Help! (with Stephen Mangan). He also did a stint in Jim Davidson's Up the Elephant and Round the Castle—only mentioned because Ross was convinced it was alongside Marina Sirtis, but IMDb says she was in just one episode?Anyway, back to Norman Bird. He appeared in The Adventure Game, Whistle Down the Wind, Steptoe and Son, Fawlty Towers, Please Sir!, and The Medusa Touch (on our long list since day one). He was Mr Braithwaite, the farmer, in Worzel Gummidge and voiced Bilbo in the 1978 Ralph Bakshi Lord of the Rings. Esperanza and Irwin look back at a true game changer on the East End. Before 1974, to get to eastern Long Island, you took the Long Island Rail Road, or drove. But the Jitney's original intent far more humble than shuttling people from NYC. In 1974 during the height of the Gas Crisis, founder Jim Davidson thought a series of small vans shuttling people between Southampton and Montauk was a niche to fill. Organically, as Jim's customers requested being taken back and forth to NY, the original business model changed, dramatically. So hop on, and enjoy a ride with us spanning 50 Years, and that metaphorically symbolizes the changes on the East End.
History is a lie agreed upon, and so is the present day when navigating the narratives of the internet's conspiracy crowd. But luckily we have a swathe of talking heads who are here to separate the wheat from the chaff, sift through the bullshit and amplify the white in the white noise. They are here to tell us the truth, no matter how unpalatable, bigoted and fallacious this might seem to reasonable or informed people. In the USA they have entire networks dedicated to distributing this modern day two minutes of hate. It can be highly lucrative to wind up the credulous and furious, and these outlets namely The Daily Wire, OAN, Rebel TV, Turning Point and others do very well and have directed more people to the right wing than a stewardess during a crash landing. These outlets can loosely be described as purveyors of news, in the same way that a dirty protest can loosely be described as an example of elegant home decoration. In the UK we have the propaganda Network GB News and Talk TV. They are very much the Robbie Williams to America's Justin Timberlake in this regard, the Jim Davidson to their Dave Chappelle or the Scunthorpe united to their Dallas Cowboys. Essentially they do the same thing but with wildly different standards of aesthetics and with far less talent, charisma, skill and panache. The main through-line is a mixture of right wing and far right politics and performative outrage deployed through the lens of conspiracy and faux anti government sentiment. But, as I believe Shakespeare once said, there are levels to this shit. If we think of Alex Jones and David Icke as top billing prize fighters slugging it out against the illuminati on a pay per view from Las Vegas, then people like Russel Brand, Laurence Fox and their ilk are a man killing rats with a hammer in a ring of hay-bales in the dimly lit back room of an abandoned warehouse in Kidderminster.

Army Sergeant Jim Davidson arrived in Vietnam in March of 1968 with the intensity of the Tet Offensive still at a fever pitch. Jim stepped into the 101st Airborne as a replacement troop and soon found out why that unit's casualty rate was so high. Jim was wounded three times, the last time by a booby-trapped grenade that left him hospitalized for weeks. Instead of going home, however, Jim was sent back to the fighting for a fourth time. Every day for 54 years since coming home, Jim was wondered why he survived when so many of his friends did not.
This 45 min segment was originally released as part of a longer RP Extra on patreon.com/reelpolitik. The original description is as follows: Geraint and Jack investigate politically incorrect British comedian Jim Davidson's new streaming service USTREME ("laugh like you used to") and the incredible comments of an elderly Geordie man called Kenny underneath virtually all their content.
Jim Davidson and Mike Price, two friends and experienced climbing partners, summited Mount Rainier on June 21, 1992. As they descended, a hidden snowbridge collapsed beneath Jim's feet and dropped him into a large glacial crevasse. Connected to Jim by the climbing rope, Mike tried to stop the fall but couldn't. In a heartbreaking conversation, Jim shares this painful memory with Ant - and how loss, resilience and the strength to survive has shaped not only that fateful day, but the rest of his life. Before Jim Davidson became a professional speaker, he was an environmental geologist and avid mountain climber. Nothing in his scientific background prepared him to become a motivational speaker, but he had a powerful story about a near-death experience while climbing on Mount Rainier, and people kept asking him to tell that story. Over time, he learned to up his game by focusing on his storytelling and stage skills. He watched other speakers, polished his story, and learned how to market and sell his keynote. In this episode, you'll hear how he leveraged each speaking opportunity and became a sought-after speaker on resilience and change management. Part 2 of our look at the 80s Jim Davidson vehicle Up the Elephant and Round the Castle and this week we also take a look at the supposed sequel Home James!, even though it was completely different and had no resemblance to the former.
This week we take a look at the oft forgotten 80s sitcom designed as a vehicle for the unbound comic talent of Jim Davidson, Up the Elephant and Round the Castle. It wasn't good then and it's even worse now but is there anything of value to be salvaged from it?
The "Reaching New Heights" series goes down under and sees Accelya's Jim Davidson catching up with Nadine Dawood Morgan, Head of Distribution and Payments in Qantas. Nadine has been with Qantas for 11 years and worked in various marketing and loyalty roles before taking up the Distribution top spot in December 2019. Nadine is an advocate for communication, collaboration, and engagement to increase NDC adoption. An airline can only create ambassadors to be its advocates outside when distribution has been fully adopted and understood internally. Qantas does this through a companywide educational project to ensure that sections such as sales, revenue management, and loyalty are ready, willing, and able to spread the good word.“For Qantas, being able to invest in and build the right technology means that we can look after our customers. ONE Order is the innovation that our industry needs and, at its core is a collaboration between all airlines and technology partners. It's really important and exciting, and also a massive feat", Nadine Dawood Morgan, Qantas. At times we get so caught up in distribution that we forget that the industry's objective is to get people traveling and connecting. As part of Qantas' 100-year celebrations, earlier this year, the airline released its ”I still call Australia home” 2022 campaign to showcase that travel is a fundamental part of Australian, and indeed any, culture. In this episode, you'll hear that:After launching NDC in Australia two years ago, Qantas is making tremendous headway in the rollout of its agency content and just went live in the US, UK, South Africa, and a number of European countries.A solid servicing capability and regular conversations with airline partners can help increase adoption across the board.ONE Order doesn't mean one airline, and collaboration will once again play a huge part in bringing the industry together and moving towards simplification and better customer engagement.Airline Voice Radio is available on your favorite podcast player such as Spotify, Apple Podcasts, and Google Podcasts. Accelya's Jim Davidson continues the "Reaching New Heights" series with Jiri Marek, Air Serbia's CEO. The airline is celebrating 95 years in operations this year, making it the world's eighth oldest carrier. In a career spanning more than 20 years, Jiri has worked in many airline roles such as sales, distribution, and ancillary revenue. Jiri is a firm believer that distribution needs to transform, but you'll have to listen to the podcast to see if he thinks a revolution or an evolution would work best. “There is always value in any business or airline. When you want to transform to something new, it's always better to build on what you already have, and what you already know, rather than completely cutting something out and starting completely new”, Jiri Marek, CEO, Air Serbia. One of the pandemic's long-lasting effects is the realization that airlines have to be more flexible and faster to react to opportunities. Air Serbia's demand changed from the typical winter and summer seasons to more last-minute sales with a reduced booking window of eight to ten days. In this reduced window, 80% of bookings happen in the last eight days; on some routes, this is even reduced to 72 hours. This means that planning becomes short-term, and capacity is adjusted based on a daily review of the booking developments per route. In this podcast, you'll hear about:Disciplines such as revenue management, e-commerce, and ancillary revenue are already benefitting from technology advances. What's missing is a technological bridge to bring those departments together to give users a better end-to-end retailing experience.Collaboration and best practice sharing will be the key to success in the future for the airline industry. The “new normal” is a quest for stability, but the market will always be volatile and dynamic. That's why it's better for airlines to be flexible and nimble rather than hoping for a stability that may never come.Airline Voice Radio is available on your favorite podcast player such as Spotify, Apple Podcasts, and Google Podcasts. Accelya CEO, Jim Davidson, starts a new Airline Voice Radio season called “Reaching New Heights” where he invites airline digital leaders to explore retailing transformation from various vantage points to inspire the industry's journey ahead. In this season premiere, Jim chats with Neil Geurin, Managing Director of Digital Customer Experience and Distribution Strategy at American Airlines. So, where is American Airlines on its retailing transformation journey? Its starting point is to simplify interactions with the customers to match, and eventually outdo, their purchasing and servicing experience with other successful retailing companies. “If we keep changing for the better consistently, sooner or later we'll get to a point where we feel really good about what we're offering to customers, and they'll feel good about how they're interacting with us.”, Neil Geurin, American Airlines. In this episode, you'll hear that:The industry has to move with the changing times and develop fresh, new technology that customers want to interact with. When customers get used to technological advances, they can't and won't snap back to how things were before the pandemic. After all, who would go back to using a non-smartphone after years of enjoying the latest mobile technology?Outdated technology and complex processes are holding the industry back. Legacy spaghetti is no longer the plat du jour, and airlines are rethinking their sales and servicing processes to simplify them and accelerate the change. We hope you enjoy this first episode in the “Reaching New Heights” season. We have some great airline leaders lined up for future podcasts, so stay tuned.
Accelya CEO, Jim Davidson, completes this Titans of the Industry series of Airline Voice Radio, where he has been engaging with airline leaders from across the globe. In this latest episode, Jim talks to Tamur Goudarzi Pour, Chief Commercial Officer at Swiss International Air Lines and Senior Vice President for Channel Management at the Lufthansa Group. Tamur speaks to the necessary transformation journey for Lufthansa Group and the industry, where he notes that the path doesn't just require NDC. Transformation needs to play out across the value chain, from search and inspiration up to fulfillment. Drawing from a Middle Eastern proverb, he notes that industry transformation will be “only as fast as the slowest camel”. At Lufthansa, Tamur tells us that the group isn't resting on its laurels, with a whopping 75% of its customers already having a digital booking experience. The airline group is looking to the B2B sector to achieve 100%. “How can we prepare for the future and at the same time we have to make decisions now? So actually, we are doubling down on NDC. We're doubling down on the whole offer and order question”, Tamur Goudarzi Pour, Chief Commercial Officer at Swiss International Air Lines and Senior Vice President for Channel Management at the Lufthansa Group. In this episode, you'll hear that:The airline is strengthening its offer and order strategy to prepare for the future.Airlines need an offer and order vision to do retailing the modern way in the interest of the customer. The industry needs to collaborate to show that this is not just a vision but that real customer benefits are on the way. This was the last episode in the special series of Airline Voice Radio. We have a few more surprises up our sleeves, so stay tuned, and we´ll be back very soon.
Accelya CEO, Jim Davidson, continues his Titans of the Industry series of Airline Voice Radio, where he engages with airline leaders from across the globe. In this third episode, Jim chats with Julio Toro, Copa Airlines' Chief Information Officer, about how the lack of openness has restricted innovation and has called for the industry to open up and be brave. After all, is it really better to buy the full suite?“I've even heard a supplier or provider tell me. “Yes, I can integrate, but I won't give you any guarantees it will work anymore”, Julio Toro, CIO, Copa Airlines. In this episode, you'll hear that:Airlines have a new appetite to move forward and do things differently. The lack of openness has stifled innovation from all types of players from new entrants to Big Tech. The industry is moving away from legacy platforms towards Offer and Order management, Settlement, ONE Order, and NDC.We have one more episode left to publish in this special series of Airline Voice Radio, so stay tuned.

Jim Davidson is a resilience expert and motivational speaker. From his 36 years as a high-altitude climber and expedition leader, Jim distills compelling stories and uplifting lessons about resilience and reaching one's goals. Jim's new book "The Next Everest: Surviving the Mountain's Deadliest Day and Finding the Resilience to Climb Again" is a harrowing tale of Jim's time on Mount Everest when a 7.8-magnitude earthquake released avalanches all around him and his team. Jim and I discussed: The events of that day when the earthquake hit Why being resilient is so important Why Everest is so popular How important self-awareness is on the mountains His career as a geologist Life lessons you learn on the mountain And much more... Jim Davidson My Take: The mountains are an amazing place, they can teach us so much about ourselves, give us lessons that we can take into the real world, and change our perspective on life. They can also be extremely unforgiving, ruthless, and grim. We must tread with caution and respect, and if we are lucky, the mountain will let us summit it. Support the Podcast

This week, we're tackling Romantic Suspense and reading one of our favorite books of 2020, Adriana Anders's Whiteout! We talk about all the things romantic suspense has to nail (ha!) to knock it out of the park, why we would literally never be characters in a book set in Antarctica, and the wild feeling of reading a romantic suspense about a virus during a pandemic. Also Sarah talks about how much she loves Adriana Anders's writing and recommends lots of backlist. Next week, we're back with an interstitial, and in two weeks, we're reading Sarah's favorite Sherry Thomas book —Ravishing the Heiress. Find it at Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Apple Books, or Kobo. Thank you, as always, for listening! Please follow us on your favorite podcasting app, and if you are up for leaving a rating or review there, we would be very grateful!Show NotesIt's tenterhooks, not tenderhooks. Apparently Jen needs more sleep, or else it's gonna be a real drag on future seasons of Fated Mates. Jen tweeted about Whiteout a lot, put it on our Best of 2020 list, and even made a meme about it last week. Reading a book about a virus during a pandemic is kind of wild! Jen and Sarah are not campers, but we support you. We do like reading books about people doing extremely cold outside things: Into Thin Air, Into the Wild, and a new book on Jen's TBR is The Next Everest by Jim Davidson.Let Sandra Brown explain romantic suspense to you, and maybe you'd like to read Jack Reacher if you're into that sort of thing. We learned some things about Antarctica and staying warm while reading this book: How cold did you say it was again? Why are frostbite and hypothermia so dangerous? How fast can you get hypothermia? What would really happen to a penis in super cold weather? What's the deal with the red puffy jacket? What was all that other gear Angel and Ford had? What are fat bombs?Do people really burn 6000 calories a day there? Can you really go 300 miles on foot? What is an ice core and why do scientists study them? Are ice tunnels real? Why is flying a plane in Antartica so dangerous? What about driving vehicles?Or swimming? There are mountain ranges in Antartica? What's the terrain like? Is that cravasee thing real? Can you really make a heater out of a tealight candle? Why are there seasons??What is Polar Night? Was it just a coincidence that you released this episode concurrently with the onset of Polar Night in Antartica?Outside of murdering people for their ice core samples, are people doing crimes in Antarctica? How accurate is the movie Arctic with Mads Mikkleson? How's Antartica doing in global climate change? Thanks to Amy, one of our listeners, we now know that Antarctica TikTok exists. The two ice stations in the book McMurdo and Vostok are real research stations, and actually there are way more of these stations than you'd think. Angel calls Ford the Iceman, but not that Iceman. If you want to read more about racism and greed in American pharmaceutical companies, you might be interested in Empire of Pain, Patrick Radden Keefe's new book about the Sackler family, about Pfizer and Moderna and the COVID vaccine, Henrietta Lacks, the Tuskegee experiments, medical colonialism, and the list goes on and on. Big Bad Wolf by Suleikha Snyder isn't a critique of big pharma, but it is a fierce critique of the American system of justice. Chekhov's Gun is an axiom by the playwright about how props on stage must come into the plot. You can still order the Fated Mates Best of 2020 pack from Old Town Books.
