Today, Danny is joined by the singer-songwriter, producer, screenwriter and journalist Geoff Deane. He was the front man of the new wave band The Leyton Buzzards and the original front man of Modern Romance. Geoff wrote for other artists, including Divine, who he toured with and wrote "You Think You're a Man" for. As a writer, Geoff contributed to The Face and Arena magazines and co-wrote several TV shows including Birds of a Feather, Tonight with Jonathan Ross and the film Kinky Boots. His memoir, “From Mohair Suits to Kinky Boots” is a best seller. Danny and Geoff discuss his upbringing in multi-cultural Hackney, his musical influences, the role art, fashion and film played and how it all influenced the way society evolved. If you can´t get enough of these podcasts, head to https://www.patreon.com/DannyHurst to access my exclusive, member-only, fun-filled and fact-packed history-related videos. KEY TAKEAWAYS Hackney was working-class, and rents were low, which drew in each wave of new immigrants and made it culturally rich. At the age of 9 Geoff´s mum entered him into a talent contest at the Hackney Empire. Musicians have always broken-down social barriers e.g. David Bowie and homosexuality. Surprisingly, blending rap with salsa resulted in Modern Romance making it big in America. Ay Ay Ay Moosey was written as a thank you to his cousin Moose. Geoff will try anything, including working as a nightclub singer in Spain. You are never too old to explore new creative avenues. Today, it´s easier for musicians to get exposure, but the level of competition makes it harder to have a long career. Unlike music, comedy demands a response. BEST MOMENTS “Stay away from bad women and stay out of the desert.” “Building vertically instead of horizontally eradicated everything that was good … no community.” “There´s a jar full of Amy Winehouse’s fag ends.” “It must have been quite subversive at the time, not liking the Beatles.” “The relationship between skinheads, suedeheads and black people was kind of like an uneasy alliance.” “That buzz has been going on all my life.” EPISODE RESOURCES https://www.instagram.com/geoffdeane Geoff´s Book - https://www.amazon.co.uk/Mohair-Suits-Kinky-Boots-Clothes-ebook/dp/B0D9W6RP7P Geoff´s son´s music - https://www.tiktok.com/@gotaloudmouth HOST BIO Historian, performer, and mentor Danny Hurst has been engaging audiences for many years, whether as a lecturer, stand-up comic or intervention teacher with young offenders and excluded secondary students. In this episode of Out of the Clouds, host Anne Mühlethaler interviews André Anderson, an author, educator, and the founder of Freedom and Balance art college. Anne first encountered Andre during his impactful TEDx talk at Hackney Empire in London and was immediately drawn to his innovative approach to storytelling.André tells Anne about his journey from a creative child who loved making imagery, writing stories and dreaming of his own media empire to becoming a self-published author and community storyteller. He explains how his first book "Ultra" — written in just 12 days on his Blackberry — opened unexpected doors and taught him the principle that "the more you create, the freer you become."Their conversation also explores André's groundbreaking project "Authors of the Estate," for which he transformed his Northwest London council estate into a publishing house. Andre explains how this initiative challenged negative narratives about his community by empowering residents to author their own stories. He likens this work to the tradition of oral historians in West Africa (called griot), highlighting how storytelling serves as both cultural preservation and a political act. André also mentions "Chalk Hill," the second book that followed "Authors of the Estate" in his publishing journey.Anne and André discuss the etymology of words like "author" and "education," as André explains how understanding their roots has shaped his approach to creativity and teaching. André also explains how his art college, Freedom and Balance, creates environments for people to discover their unique creative language through play. He shares his realization that facilitation is about asking powerful questions rather than providing all the answers, describing his role memorably: "I am Gandalf, and all of my tools, or all of my magic, is tools of play."Anne and André delve into the importance of aspirational play for adults in an increasingly AI-driven world, with André suggesting that play might be the most distinctly human activity that cannot be replaced by technology. They examine how imperfection, vulnerability and the willingness to make mistakes can become powerful educational tools and discuss André's project "Love Letters for My Peoples," which uses love as a framework for creativity and connection.Throughout the conversation, André shares his philosophy of "heart work" — creative work that incorporates strands of one's authentic self — and reflects on the importance of process over product. André even makes a compelling comparison between his "Authors of the Estate" project and Nas's seminal album "Illmatic," referring to it as his defining work that fans always want to hear again. The episode concludes with André's thoughtful responses to Anne's closing lightning round questions, revealing his deep connection to creativity, his appreciation for his mother's early support of his creative pursuits and his belief that happiness comes from knowing the world has heard you.A profound conversation about reclaiming narratives, finding freedom through creativity and the transformative power of play. Happy listening!About André AndersonFreedom & Balance is an Art College for the artist in everyone. Laugh Tracks Legends of Comedy with Randy and Steve

What better way to celebrate St. Patrick's Day -- and the 200th Episode of Laugh Tracks Legends of Comedy -- than by turning the spotlight on Ardal O'Hanlon, a masterful Irish stand-up comic and television star. Launching into a late 1980s Dublin scene that didn't have much comedy, Ardal had a solution! With a couple of college mates he started a comedy club, then went on to win a "New Act of the Year" award at the Hackney Empire comedy competition in 1994. A long tv career followed with Ardal playing everything from a child-like priest to a superhero to a detective investigator in the recent "Death in Paradise". He has also dabbled in stage and voice acting, and he still finds time to work the standup stages of the UK. As always, find extra clips below and thanks for sharing our shows! Want more Ardal? Ardal's big break came in 1995 when he was tapped for a key role in the British sitcom "Father Ted". Playing the child-like Father Dougal McGuire, Ardal was a fan favorite. https://youtu.be/bZ4XdqQrT20?si=0kaD5mCDc8XXOqaE After his initial series "Father Ted" had concluded it's run, Ardal took a left turn for his next show -- starring as George Sunday -- a simple man who in reality is Thermoman from the planet Ultron. High concept? Yes. Very funny? Absolutely. https://youtu.be/ZimdnUvfs0I?si=dhAisyQ6MKg2cV0r While he has become a television star with many series under his belt, Ardal continues to perform standup to the delight of fans. This is a fine bit from the BBC Comedy Roadshow a few years back. https://youtu.be/8LrY-Usdc54?si=-VM-Ib19rP0Q4TUf
