Rational Exuberance: Why $3 Trillion in AI Investment is Mathematical Certainty, not Madness

Keen On Democracy

Play Episode Listen Later Sep 12, 2025 38:56

Today's $3 trillion investment in AI is not only rational and beyond inevitable - it's “predestined”. At least according to That Was The Week newletter publisher and techno-determinist Keith Teare. Exuberance is not only required, Keith argues, but absolutely essential in today's AI mad gold rush. And he's particularly critical of all skeptics - from traditional tech naysayers (like myself) to mainstream publications like The Economist - which are all a touch questioning of today's unprecedented boom. What if the $3 trillion AI investment tsunami goes wrong? The Economist asks. But for Keith, it can't possibly go wrong. The investment has already been made, he argues, and the resultant technology will inevitably benefit humanity. He envisions a world where AI adds $20 trillion to global GDP by 2035, where a kid in rural Africa with an Android phone can access the world's best AI, and where economic growth hits an unprecedented 20% annually. I think this type of teleological argument adds up to about $3 trillion worth of madness. But what do I know?1. The Scale Defense: $3 Trillion is Actually Small Teare argues the massive AI investment looks rational when measured against projected returns - $20 trillion added to global GDP by 2035, potentially creating $400 trillion in company value (at 20x multiples). His math: even if the investment seems huge, the predicted gains are exponentially bigger.2. AI's Business Model Advantage Over Previous Tech Booms Unlike the internet (which relied on advertising and attention-grabbing) or early TV (which devolved into reality shows), AI operates on subscriptions and API usage. Teare believes this model doesn't require undermining human outcomes to generate profit - making it fundamentally different from past transformative technologies.3. Individual Failures Don't Equal Systemic Collapse While specific companies (like Perplexity at $20B valuation) might fail, Teare argues the overall AI ecosystem is "failure-proof" because trained models retain their value even if companies go bankrupt. He compares it to the Channel Tunnel - the infrastructure survived financial collapse and eventually thrived.4. The "Western Suicide Wish" Cultural Diagnosis Echoing Elon Musk and Alex Karp, Teare sees Western civilization as increasingly "ashamed" of Enlightenment values - viewing humans as problems rather than solutions. He argues AI represents a return to human agency and innovation as answers to global challenges.5. Content Creators Face a Reckoning The decline of web traffic (8% this year) signals the end of advertising-based content monetization. Creators must either embrace quality/subscription models or find ways to integrate with AI systems through attribution and linking - but the traffic-based economy is dying.Keen On America is a reader-supported publication. Going Rogue With Caitlin Johnstone

He hung up a sign that said Secretary of War, snapped a picture for the socials, shut the door, took a swig of Jameson straight from the bottle, then sat down and fondled the revolver in his desk drawer like a little boy playing with his penis. Visions of cruise missiles danced through his head, aircraft carriers and nuclear submarines and tiny middle eastern bodies blown to bits by glorious inventory. Mushroom clouds flashed in his eyes as he caressed the trigger with an index finger. "They call me the Secretary of War," he said. "They call me the Secretary of War." He did not feel the robins in his chest or hear the red-winged blackbirds trilling in his hair. The electricity of the flesh was a stranger to him. Exuberance was a deadbeat dad who never called. Outside the Pentagon walls a cicada roared unnoticed and the grass sang ancient hymns to the sun god. People bustled in and bustled out, their minds buzzing with Palantir porn, their lips casting spells of Raytheon and ruin. Under the rubble of a far away building a child reached out a hand in the darkness. Her cries were silenced by gulps of whiskey in the office of the Secretary of War. Reading by Tim Foley.

In the midst of another all-time market high, Doug and Greg discuss the potential for a new cycle of exuberance driven by IPOs. They delve into the significant market cap of tech giants like Nvidia and Microsoft, the incredible impact of AI on GDP growth and economic resilience, and the opportunities for small and mid-cap stocks. They also cover trade agreements, the relationship between interest rates and valuation, and how rate cuts could affect the economy. Key Takeaways [00:16] - Is the IPO window about to open again? He began educating himself about things he had never thought to learn, and tapping his LinkedIn network to get intros to the smartest people in the industry. “If you imagine yourself on like the day of IPO, 99 percent of what you needed to know to get to that day, you didn't know on day one,” he says. “So, why not take 99 percent to 99.5 percent, and work on the thing you really want to exist, even if you don't know anything about it yet?”Chapters: (01:07) - Blake on Boom's beginnings (01:52) - Breaking the sound barrier (05:23) - Concorde's legacy (09:36) - Navigating regulations (12:08) - Boomless supersonic flight (16:48) - The test flight (20:11) - Day-of nervousness (24:26) - Carrying passengers (26:55) - Cost & wi-fi (30:19) - “No middle seats” (32:35) - Hard tech (36:48) - What if Apple made a plane? ·      Philippians 4:4 – Rejoice in the Lord always.  I will say it again, Rejoice!  ·      Why should I choose joy?  ·      Choose joy because God gives you hope. ·      Do people today think they can manipulate God?  ·      They realized they had blown their relationship with God.  ·      Do you ever think “I've blown my relationship with God?”  ·      Isaiah 35:1-2 – 1The wilderness and the desert rejoice; the steppe rejoices and the saffron blooms. 2She blooms and rejoices; Yea, joy and cries of joy. The glory of Lebanon is given to her, the splendor of Carmel and Sharon. Behold they see the glory of the LORD, the splendor of our God. ·      God does not give up on you.  ·      3All of you make strong discouraged hands and make firm knees that stumble.  ·      Romans 8:28 – For we know that God is working good in all things for those who love him and are called according to his purpose. ·      Heavenly Father, open my eyes.  Help me see where you are at work. ·      4Say to the hurried heart, “All of you, be strong and do not fear. Behold your God; vengeance comes.  God brings ‘the getting even;' and he saves you all. ·      5Then the eyes of the blind will be open; and the ears of the deaf will be open. 6Then the lame ram will leap and the speechless tongue will cry out. For water will burst forth in the wilderness, and torrents on the desert plains. 7The parched ground will be a pool; the thirsty ground as a pool of water. In the jackal habitat, a resting place, a home for reeds and rushes. ·      We are the Easter People! ·      God is the God of the unexpected.  ·      8And there will be a highway and a way, the way of the Holy, those called to it.  The unclean will not pass over it. He is to them walker of the way and the foolish will not wander on it. 9There will be no lions there and no hungry beasts will come upon it; They will not be found there, but the redeemed ones will walk. ·      Psalm 14:1 – The fool has said in his heart, “There is no god…”  ·      10And the ransomed ones of the LORD return; And they come to Zion with ringing cries. ·      And eternal joy is upon their heads. Exuberance and joy they attain. And they escape grief and groaning. ·      Revelation 21:2-4 - And I saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven, like a bride adorned for her husband. And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Behold, the dwelling of God is with me.  He will dwell with them and they shall be his people and God himself will be with them; he will wipe away every tear from their eyes and death will be no more, neither shall there be mourning nor crying nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away.   ·      Do you need some hope today? Our Heavenly Father has all you need.    LIFE GROUP DISCUSSION QUESTIONS  Starter:  Think about a time when you desperately needed hope.  How did you find it?  Discussion: 1.      Read Isaiah 35:1-2 2.      Imagine you are in exile in a foreign country.  What emotion would you feel as you hear these words? 3.      Throughout this passage, God is making dead space alive. For example, the desert gushes water and it rejoices.  What are modern dead spaces?  How does God make them alive. 4.      Read Isaiah 35:3-7 5.      The prophet brings a message of hope to the exiles.  How can Jesus followers today bring a message of hope? 6.      What is your reaction to God claiming vengeance as his business?  How does that make you feel? 7.      Read Isaiah 35:8-9 and Matthew 7:13-14. 8.      In your opinion, what are the parallels between these two passages? 9.      Read Isaiah 35:10 and Revelation 21:2-4 10.  What do you think will be your reaction to when you enter heaven?  How does this help you live with hope?

On this week's supersized episode to get you through the airport, Sonny Bunch (The Bulwark), Alyssa Rosenberg (The Washington Post), and Peter Suderman (Reason) ask if it's a controversy or a controversy that Blake Lively's costar and director, Justin Baldoni, seems to have orchestrated a virtual sliming of her in response to fears he was going to get called out for harassing her on the set of It Ends With Us. (You can read the whole New York Timesstory discussed in this episode via this gift link.) Then they review Emilia Pérez, Netflix's main awards-season contender and one of the most deranged movies of the year. But hey: at least it's not boring! If you enjoyed this episode, please share it with a friend!

ProShares' Hyman says 'rational exuberance' will keep driving the market

Simeon Hyman, global investment strategist at ProShares, sees "rational exuberance" on today's market, noting that the stock market is a little bit expensive but not dramatically above long-term normal forward earnings numbers, and he notes that expectations are reasonable, a little  high but reasonable. Further, he suggests that all-time low levels of leverage and little debt on the books of the Standard & Poor's 500 is "a significant risk offset" to the current worries that make investors nervous. Author Michael Sincere — who writes the Long-Term Trader column at MarketWatch — discusses his new book, “Help Your Child Build Wealth: A Parents' Guide to Teaching Children to be Successful Investors,” and then sticks around to discuss technical analysis and how he sees the market moving on from the election and through the change of administrations into 2025.

Last year, Elle shifted her financial education efforts into an official position with the UCLA financial wellness office, through which she delivered presentations and provided one-on-one coaching. Having a 75% position with the university required her to adjust how she managed both her time and money. Elle and Emily conclude the interview by sharing ideas for how the listeners can start helping their peers at their own universities with respect to their finances.

In this episode, Emily interviews Elle Rathbun, a 5th-year PhD candidate at UCLA. Elle shares her financial origin story of growing up in a low-income family, becoming a QuestBridge scholar during undergrad, and working for two years before matriculating at UCLA. During those years, Elle developed her financial acuity and prepared financially for grad school, including investing for retirement and saving up cash. This energy carried forward into grad school, where within her department Elle started a group to chat about money and created resources to help her peers navigate the financial aspects of their fellowship and UCLA's bureaucracy. Tune in to the next episode for part two of the conversation!

There are a lot of excellent writers and analysts in the fantasy industry. There are few that I hold in as high a regard as Adam (and not surprising he earned the FSWA's Fantasy Writer of the Year). He's a forthright human being with a tremendous intellect whose approach to analysis in this space differs from most. He's also an excellent fantasy GM in re-draft and dynasty formats.  Adam spends a lot of time examining results and dealing with broad themes of decision-making that help us become better fantasy players and fantasy analysts. https://youtu.be/2vT3XKaHfXI Topics The effects of fantasy manager exuberance and pessimism. Friends of the Rosary, Yesterday, we read another passage in the New Testament (Luke 5:33–39) showing the hypocrisy of scribes and Pharisees. They asked Jesus why he didn't encourage fasting among his followers. The Lord answered them, "Can you make the wedding guests fastwhile the bridegroom is with them? But the days will come, and when the bridegroom is taken away from them, then they will fast in those days." Christ Jesus is the bridegroom and the Church is the bride. He is the marriage of divinity and humanity, the wedding of heaven and earth, In him, we discover the most intimate union is achieved between God and the world. As Bishop Barron wrote, "Could you imagine people fasting at a wedding banquet? Could you imagine going into an elegant room with your fellow guests and being served bread and water? It would be ridiculous! The mark of the Christian dispensation is joy. Exuberance. Delight. God and the world have come together. What could be better news?" Ave Maria!Jesus, I Trust In You! Come, Holy Spirit, come! To Jesus through Mary! + Mikel Amigot | RosaryNetwork.com, New York

The market correction didn't start on Monday; it actually started in July at the markets' peak. Then markets began to steadily sell off until tapping the 20-DMA, and that's when markets fell sharply, as the unwinding of the Yen carry trade began to really happen. On Wednesday the market rallied right into the 100-DMA, and trapped-longs sold off with markets ending at their lows for the day. Sellers are now getting exhausted and sentiment is turning more bearish, which is what markets needed. Today: Pay attention to Bond prices (not yields); we expect them to move back to support a cluster of moving averages at about 4.1% on the Ten-year Treasury. Bonds are not quite oversold yet, so no entry point on bonds just yet. As the Fed begins to cut rates, that will exert downward pressure on yields, pushing bond prices higher. That's not going to happen overnight, however.   Hosted by RIA Chief Investment Strategist, Lance Roberts, CIO  Produced by Brent Clanton, Executive Producer ------- Watch the video version of this podcast: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NhhxNaLDDaA&list=PLwNgo56zE4RAbkqxgdj-8GOvjZTp9_Zlz&index=1 ------- Get more info & commentary:  https://realinvestmentadvice.com/insights/real-investment-daily/ ------- Visit our Site: https://www.realinvestmentadvice.com Contact Us: 1-855-RIA-PLAN -------- Subscribe to SimpleVisor: https://www.simplevisor.com/register-new -------- Connect with us on social: https://twitter.com/RealInvAdvice https://twitter.com/LanceRoberts https://www.facebook.com/RealInvestmentAdvice/ https://www.linkedin.com/in/realinvestmentadvice/ #MarketExuberance #ExuberanceReversal #InvestorSentiment #MarketBounce #MarketCorrection #Resistance #TrappedLongs #CarryTrade #MarginCalls #JapaneseYen #USDollar #MarketCaution #2024Election #InvestorCaution #NASDAQ #NASDAQcorrection #100DMA #20DMA #50DMA #Retest #SupportLevel #BondYields #BondPrices #FederalReserve #RateCuts #MarketBullishness #MarketCorrection #InvestingAdvice #Money #Investing

One month's employment report should not trigger market moves of this degree. It is easy to put all the blame for this on the exuberance of traders, but Federal Reserve Chair Powell's mantra of “data dependency” means investors will naturally elevate imprecise short-term data releases into the arbiters of US monetary policy.

(1/24/24) More questions are coming in about Bonds as yields continue to tick upward. NOTE: Day-to-day movement in yields has nothing to do with anything other than market dynamics. Over the long term, yields will reflect inflation, economic growth, wages, earnings, and activity in the economy. Short term, it's just noise. That being said, yields were very over bought (yields are the inverse of bond prices.) They are challenging that 50-DMA now. With the Fed slated to cut rates this year, yields will fall. Meanwhile, as the S&P has been doing fantastically, small- and mid-cap companies have remained range-bound, and international markets have performed similarly. So, all of the exuberance that's being expressed about markets currently could be a little "sus," because of a lack of participation in the markets.
