It is the 90th anniversary of the establishment of Social Security; amazingly, some recipients over the age of 150 are apparently still receiving benefits (!). Could there be a clue here on how to help shore up the fund? Just sayin... Nvidia earnings are on the way; Meta has and a 20-day winning streak, not one down day for the pat6 20-trading days. Its performance as one of the Mag-7 stocks is what has helped, in part, keep markets elevated. The market defies more negative news because retail investors continue to step in and “buy the dip.” In our recent Bull Bear reports, we discussed the push by retail investors, but looking at retail sentiment is quite remarkable. Since the pandemic, retail investors have never been this bullish on the stock market. Such is amazing, given that their mailboxes are not being stuffed with government stimulus checks.” Retail investors are expected to become more bullish about increasing equity exposure when markets rise. However, the more extended markets become, the more confident investors are about increasing speculative risk. Simeon Hyman, global investment strategist at ProShares, sees "rational exuberance" on today's market, noting that the stock market is a little bit expensive but not dramatically above long-term normal forward earnings numbers, and he notes that expectations are reasonable, a little  high but reasonable. Further, he suggests that all-time low levels of leverage and little debt on the books of the Standard & Poor's 500 is "a significant risk offset" to the current worries that make investors nervous. Elle shares her financial origin story of growing up in a low-income family, becoming a QuestBridge scholar during undergrad, and working for two years before matriculating at UCLA. During those years, Elle developed her financial acuity and prepared financially for grad school, including investing for retirement and saving up cash. This energy carried forward into grad school, where within her department Elle started a group to chat about money and created resources to help her peers navigate the financial aspects of their fellowship and UCLA's bureaucracy. The market correction didn't start on Monday; it actually started in July at the markets' peak. Then markets began to steadily sell off until tapping the 20-DMA, and that's when markets fell sharply, as the unwinding of the Yen carry trade began to really happen. On Wednesday the market rallied right into the 100-DMA, and trapped-longs sold off with markets ending at their lows for the day. Sellers are now getting exhausted and sentiment is turning more bearish, which is what markets needed. Today: Pay attention to Bond prices (not yields); we expect them to move back to support a cluster of moving averages at about 4.1% on the Ten-year Treasury. Bonds are not quite oversold yet, so no entry point on bonds just yet. As the Fed begins to cut rates, that will exert downward pressure on yields, pushing bond prices higher. (1/24/24) More questions are coming in about Bonds as yields continue to tick upward. NOTE: Day-to-day movement in yields has nothing to do with anything other than market dynamics. Over the long term, yields will reflect inflation, economic growth, wages, earnings, and activity in the economy. Short term, it's just noise. That being said, yields were very over bought (yields are the inverse of bond prices.) They are challenging that 50-DMA now. With the Fed slated to cut rates this year, yields will fall. Meanwhile, as the S&P has been doing fantastically, small- and mid-cap companies have remained range-bound, and international markets have performed similarly. So, all of the exuberance that's being expressed about markets currently could be a little "sus," because of a lack of participation in the markets. Just imagine what you can learn from an elite coach for professional NFL and NHL players! Here's Coach Tim Adams (search all the socials for him as @CoachTimAdams) and in this episode of OneSharpSword, we reveal something that our respective teams didn't even know we were dreaming up. Starting as many do, with meager means in a small town then moving and growing up in Colorado, joining the AirForce, and then blowing out his knee twice, Tim found that he could help others elevate their skills. He said that Curiosity (yayyyy - a pet word of mine) and Exuberance allowed him to seek out some of the highest level coaches out there and learn from them, thereby elevating his ability to help others. After a life upheaval, he did a full on retooling, shedding what no longer belonged in his life. (Such parallels for me in his story, which is why I wanted him on the program and why we're working on a project together.) He said that originally, lack was his driving force. Now, he feels called. I call that listening to the whispers and being pulled from your heart. Tim looks at the Somatic Emotional bridge and sees where high achievers can experience more in their lives. And in our discussion, we noted that “more” sometimes means living more simply. He spoke of the traumas that some people have endured and I noted that we're all exposed to microtraumas throughout the day. His point was that we don't have to get to chaos in order to make a change. Shortcuts? Sure - doing the right work IS the shortcut. For self care consider these three steps: 1) Stop and listen. Just… listen. 2) Walk! Get outside and move. Feel the sense of your body in locomotion. 3) Connect with your body. Connect with nature. Connect with someone else. (Even though they are strutting around still talking about at least 2 more hikes and no thoughts about a cut anytime soon. - USD lowest level against a basket of currencies since April 2022 (also showing that expectations are for a Fed to chill out) ---10Y Treasuries - Down from triple top near 4.10% to 3.8% Retail Sales - Total retail sales in June increased a weaker-than-expected 0.2% month-over-month (Briefing.com consensus 0.5%), yet May sales were revised up to 0.5% (from 0.3%). Excluding autos, June retail sales also increased a weaker-than-expected 0.2% (Briefing.com consensus 0.3%) following an upwardly revised 0.3% increase (from 0.1%) in May. After accounting for the upward revisions to May sales, the June results were roughly consistent with expectations. (Briefing) The key takeaway from the report is that control group sales, which are used in the computation for personal spending in the GDP report, were up a solid 0.6%, leaving them far afield of an economy in recessionary distress. - Motor vehicle and parts dealer sales increased 0.3% month-over-month following a 1.5% increase in May. - Gasoline station sales declined 1.4% month-over-month after declining 2.1% in May. - Building material and garden equipment and supplies dealer sales dropped 1.2% month-over-month after increasing 1.4% in May. - Food and beverage store sales decreased 0.7% month-over-month after being unchanged in May. - Nonstore retailer sales jumped 1.9% month-over-month after increasing 0.7% in May. - Food services and drinking places sales rose 0.1% month-over-month after increasing 1.2% in May. - Electronics and appliance store sales increased 1.1% month-over-month following a 2.1% increase in May.
