Did you know two years after Paul Revere's famous ride, there was a second ride made by a teenaged woman?  That's right. On April 26, 1777, 16-year old Sybil Ludington rode 40 miles throughout the night to alert and rally American militiamen to participate in a planned attack organized by her father, Col. Bloom Energy Corporation (NYSE:BE) On April 14, 2026, Reuters reported that Bloom Energy will supply Oracle with up to '2.8 gigawatts' of fuel cell capacity under an upgraded deal, which shows rising power demand due to artificial intelligence. The corporations have already signed for an initial 1.2 gigawatts… Bloom Energy manufactures and installs power production platforms based on solid oxide fuel cells. Bloom Energy Server turns conventional low-pressure natural gas or biogas into electricity using an electrochemical method that does not include combustion. 4. This episode I am reading from Jeffrey Keene's book 'Fire in the Soul: Reincarnation from Antietam to Ground Zero' I had never given reincarnation much thought, nor had I ever seen a psychic, but both of these elements came together one Halloween night. That one night was to change my outlook on life and my way of thinking forever. That evening started a progression of puzzle pieces floating into place. As each piece gently touched down, it added to a picture, a portrait that reinforced a strong case for reincarnation. My story weaves a tapestry of mystery and history, of love and the horrors of warfare. The journey was and still is a wondrous one, sometimes funny but at other times sad and physically painful. I force my beliefs on no one. I only ask that the readers open their minds to their own experiences, to take a good look at the world around them. As for me, I have no choice but to believe in reincarnation. I lived the story, and every word is true. Join me on an amazing journey through the eyes of two people: one a Georgian, the other a Connecticut Yankee. Similarities between the two go far beyond coincidence. They think alike, look alike, and even share facial scars. Their lives are so intertwined that they appear to be one. Half of this equation, Jeffrey J. Keene, a retired Assistant Fire Chief from affluent Westport, Connecticut. The other half, John B. Gordon, Confederate General, Army of Northern Virginia, died January 9, 1904. I would be lead into a 10-year travel odyssey that included the battlefields of Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia, and Georgia as well as the library of Congress. Gathering information from official records, wartime reports and even love letters, I uncovered many parallels between my own life and that of General Gordon. Unexpectedly a trip to the emergency room on my thirtieth birthday with facial pain that mimicked a wound General Gordon received 115 years before at the battle of Antietam when he was thirty years of age. My hospital visit was more than a decade before I first heard his name. September 11, 2001 would start a new chapter in my life, literarily. In 2007, I was summoned to an online Reincarnation Forum dedicated to Children's past lives. I was called in to aid in verifying a child's information because of my knowledge of Fire Department operations and equipment. In less than a week, from the information given to me by the mother, on and off the forum, I discovered the boy was relating a lifetime of a New York City firefighter who perished in the events of September 11, 2001. After hearing his story, I call the young boy, The Phoenix. Bio Jeffrey J. Keene was born in Danbury, Connecticut in 1947 and grew up in the town of Westport, CT, attending Staples High School. He joined the Air Force following his graduation in 1965. Following basic training, Keene specialized as a medic. While serving in Texas, Alabama, Florida, and New Jersey; he rose to the rank of sergeant, and received an honorable discharge in 1969. After returning to Westport, Keene joined the town's fire department in 1976. In his thirty five years in the fire service, Keene studied Fire Science at Norwalk State Technical College and attended Delaware State Fire School, where he progressed to the Fire Instructor level. One of the state's first Hazardous Materials Technicians, he also developed a Mock Crash Program to educate local high school students on the dangers of drinking and driving, gaining recognition for his efforts from Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD). Jeffrey Keene was a decorated firefighter and an Assistant Fire Chief with the Westport, Connecticut Fire Department (retired 2003) Asst. Chief Keene spent his last fifteen years as a shift commander and was charged with the development and implementation of Standard Operation Procedures for the department. An accomplished Civil War researcher and speaker (having visited most of the major battle sites in the North and South) he has lectured on Civil War topics to groups ranging from elementary students to peer experts. Mr. Keene makes a strong case for reincarnation in his book titled Someone Else's Yesterday. Through years of research and travel, he has amassed compelling evidence of a former life during the American Civil War; that of Confederate General John B. Gordon. We hope everyone had a Merry Christmas last week, and looks ahead with hope for improved conditions for the new year. To get in right frame of mind, what better than to drop back into this special edition around Christmastime 2022, when we drop in on quite an experience for Overdrive Executive Editor Alex Lockie out at the Danbury, Connecticut, stop on the Wreaths Across America convoy tour from Maine down to Arlington National Cemetery for the big central wreath-laying event. As with this year's Wreaths event, it was but one among thousands around the country at veterans' cemeteries designed to pay respect to those who've served the nation. Lockie there in 2022 met Hampton Roads Moving and Storage owner-operator Steven Meyer and his 1998 Freightliner FLD, pulling a custom wrapped Kentucky trailer of his own design and dedicated to honoring distinct individuals. Together, through Meyer's narration their histories chart a story of achievement, of sacrifice, and ultimately of elemental things about human nature. "According to a study by The Roundup, 84 percent of customers say that they are deterred from companies with poor environmental practices, and 62 percent 'always or often' specifically look for products that are sustainable. That is why Newsweek is proud to partner with Statista for the seventh time to present America's Most Responsible Companies 2026, highlighting 600 companies that are taking action each day to uphold their social responsibility.  This ranking is built on an evaluation of company CSR/ESG or sustainability reports, financial reports, history of lawsuits and 2024 top polluter indexes from the Political Economy Research Institute. Additionally, over 30 KPIs were researched from the three areas of ESG—environmental, social and governance performance. Companies included in this ranking are American Tower (AMT), Ingersoll Rand (IR), Las Vegas Sands (LVS), NVIDIA (NVDA), and Tapestry (TPR )." End quotes The top five companies in the ranking are NVIDIA (NVDA), Mastercard (MA), Palo Alto Networks (PANW), Ecolab (ECL), and T-Mobile (TMUS). ------------------------------------------------------------- December 2025 Sustainable Stock and ETF Picks (2) As renewable energy companies make gains, this article reviews some top companies in the sector. The article is titled Top 7 companies offering digital transformation solutions for renewable energy on azbigmedia.com. It's by Eric Kelly. Here are some of his comments. "1. DXC Technology (DXC) builds Distributed Energy Resource Management Systems – DERMS for short. What that means in plain English: software that can juggle thousands of solar panels, wind turbines, and batteries at once. Their renewable energy digital services do real-time forecasting and balancing. When a cloud covers a solar farm, the system already knows and has adjusted before anyone notices a flicker. They use predictive analytics to figure out what's going to happen hours or days ahead, which matters when you're trying to keep the lights on for millions of people. 2. Siemens Energy (ENR.DE) Their Omnivise Digital Solutions covers pretty much everything – from the moment you build a power plant to the day you tear it down decades later. They make distributed control systems that pull data from every sensor, every turbine, every transformer, and show it all in one place. What's interesting is their edge computing for substations. Instead of sending all data to some central cloud and waiting for instructions, the processing happens right there on-site. Milliseconds matter when you're managing a grid. Siemens is also deep into green hydrogen tech. They're working on projects in over 100 countries and their equipment generates about half the world's electricity. 3. Schneider Electric (SU.PA) built EcoStruxure. It connects hardware, software, and services to optimize energy use in buildings, factories, and grids. Their new One Digital Grid Platform uses AI to manage planning, operations, and asset management all in one place. The AI automatically catches when the digital model of a grid doesn't match reality – like when someone forgot to update the system after installing new equipment. Sounds simple, but that kind of mismatch causes real problems. 4. ABB (ABBNY) make robotic systems for manufacturing solar panels, complete instrumentation packages for solar and wind plants, and the smart grid systems that tie it all together. Their battery storage solutions are particularly interesting. BESS-as-a-Service means companies can use battery systems without buying them outright. For industrial users trying to cut electricity costs during peak hours, that's huge. You get energy independence without the capital expenditure. ABB supplies converters for the world's biggest offshore wind farms and generators for hydroelectric plants. 5. GE Vernova (GEV) is the spinoff from General Electric that focuses purely on power generation and grid management. They generate about 25% of the world's electricity through their installed base of 2200 GW worth of equipment.  Their Grid Orchestration Software uses AI to predict demand, optimize energy flow, and integrate all those distributed resources we keep talking about. Their Advanced Asset Performance Management system pulls data from information systems, operational systems, and engineering models to help people make faster decisions. GE Vernova partnered with Amazon Web Services to accelerate cloud migration and bring generative AI into energy infrastructure. 6. IBM Energy and Utilities (IBM) brings Watson and AI expertise to energy. Their Maximo platform manages assets, and Watson handles the heavy data analytics. They're using AI to forecast renewable energy production, optimize maintenance schedules, and manage distributed resources. IBM is also experimenting with quantum computing for modeling complex energy systems. Their blockchain platforms enable peer-to-peer energy trading – imagine selling excess solar power from your roof directly to your neighbor. They build digital twins that simulate how turbines, transformers, and entire grids will behave under different conditions. 7. Accenture (ACN) isn't selling hardware or software directly. They're consultants who help energy companies figure out their entire digital transformation strategy. Sometimes the problem isn't technology – it's knowing which technology to use and how to implement it without disrupting your business. They work with industry leaders on IoT, Big Data, AI, and cloud solutions. Their approach covers operational excellence, asset management, customer experience, and decarbonization. Renewable energy digital services from Accenture include predictive maintenance for wind and solar farms, platforms for managing virtual power plants, and real-time carbon emission monitoring. They also help companies integrate ESG principles into operations and reporting." End quotes. ------------------------------------------------------------- December 2025 Sustainable Stock and ETF Picks (3) This next article is titled Zacks Industry Outlook Highlights Bloom Energy, OPAL Fuels and FuelCell on finance.yahoo.com. It's by Zacks Equity Research. Now, some quotes from the article. "1. FuelCell Energy (FCEL) Based in Danbury, CT, the company makes ultra-clean, highly efficient power plants that can run on fuels like renewable biogas and natural gas, producing electricity with far less pollution and fewer greenhouse gas emissions than conventional fossil-fuel plants. In September 2025, the company announced its fiscal third-quarter results. The company reported a loss of 95 cents per share, which improved 45% year over year. The company's top line also improved 97% year over year to $46.74 million. The Zacks Consensus Estimate for FuelCell Energy's fiscal 2026 sales implies an improvement of 21.5% year over year. The consensus estimate for fiscal 2026 earnings implies 51.3% growth year over year. The company currently carries a Zacks Rank #2 (Buy). 2. During the third quarter, the company produced renewable natural gas of nearly 1.3 million Metric Million British Thermal units (MMBtu), which was up 30% year over year. The Fuel Station Services segment sold, dispensed, and serviced an aggregate of 38.9 million GGEs of transportation fuel for the three months ended Sept. 30, 2025, reflecting an increase of 1% year over year. The Zacks Consensus Estimate for the company's 2025 sales implies an improvement of 21.8% from the previous year's reported figure. The estimate for 2025 earnings implies 128.6% growth from the previous year's reported figure. The company currently carries a Zacks Rank #2. 3. Bloom Energy (BE) Based in San Jose, CA, the company generates and distributes renewable energy. On Oct. 28, 2025, Bloom Energy announced its third-quarter results. It reported earnings of 15 cents per share against a loss of a cent in the year-ago quarter. The company's top line also improved 57.3% year over year to $519 million. The Zacks Consensus Estimate for 2025 sales implies an improvement of 28.6% from the previous year's reported figure. The consensus estimate for 2025 earnings implies 92.9% growth from the previous year's reported figure. The company currently carries a Zacks Rank #3 (Hold)." The article is titled Prediction: This AI Infrastructure Stock Could Hit a $500 Billion Valuation by 2032 on fool.com and is by Thomas Niel. Here are some quotes from Mr. Neil's article. "Arista Networks (ANET) A top provider of cloud networking solutions for end-users such as AI data centers, the company has already benefited greatly from this trend. Already a strong performer over the past five years, its shares may be in for further outsized price appreciation in the years ahead, as the AI growth trend persists. How Arista benefits from the AI buildout Arista Networks has been in business for over 20 years, becoming a billion-dollar business around 10 years ago. Still, it's only been over the past three years that the company experienced a sustained growth resurgence. The reason for this is hardly a mystery. In late 2022, ChatGPT launched, sparking the start of the genAI growth trend. Soon after, tech companies, especially the largest names in the space, began to deploy hundreds of billions of dollars into building out their AI infrastructures. With this booming surge in demand, it's no surprise that Arista Networks has benefited from a big jump in demand for networking hardware, like switches and routers, as well as the software used to power them… This rapid revenue growth has brought with it a correspondingly high rate of earnings growth… Next stop $500 billion? Plans of a flex lane on I-84 in Danbury could be in Fairfield County's future. The Connecticut Department of Transportation announced the flex lane plan this week, which would open certain non-driveable lanes for cars for short periods to alleviate traffic. Josh Morgan says based on how it goes in Danbury, this is a plan the DOT is looking at for the I-95 corridor, specifically in Greenwich Stamford, Bridgeport and Fairfield. I'm Stacey Simms and every other Friday I bring you a short episode with the top diabetes stories and headlines happening now. XX Cornell researchers have developed an implant system that can treat type 1 diabetes by supplying extra oxygen to densely packed insulin-secreting cells, without the need for immunosuppression. The system could also potentially provide long-term treatment for a range of chronic diseases. This lab has produced previous implantable devices that have proved effective in controlling blood sugar in diabetic mice, but they can only last so long. "It's the proof of concept. We really proved that oxygenation is important, and oxygenation will support high cell-density capsules," Tempelman said. "The capsules are immune protective and last for a long time without having some kind of fouling of the membrane. The body never likes it when you put a foreign substance in. So that's the engineering in the Ma Lab, to look for materials and coatings for the materials that are immune protective, but also don't invoke excess response from the body because of the material." The next step will be to implant the system in a pig model, and also test it with human stem cells. The researchers are interested in eventually trying to use the system for implanting different cell types in humans for long-term treatment of chronic diseases, according to Tempelman, who is CEO of Persista Bio Inc., a new startup she founded with Ma and Flanders that is licensing these technologies. https://medicalxpress.com/news/2025-08-implant-diabetes-oxygenating-insulin-cells.html XX Mayo Clinic cancer research may be big news for T1D. After identifying a sugar molecule that cancer cells use on their surfaces to hide from the immune system, the researchers have found the same molecule may eventually help in the treatment of type 1. Cancer cells use a variety of methods to evade immune response, including coating themselves in a sugar molecule known as sialic acid. The researchers found in a preclinical model of type 1 diabetes that it's possible to dress up beta cells with the same sugar molecule, enabling the immune system to tolerate the cells. The findings show that it's possible to engineer beta cells that do not prompt an immune response   In the preclinical models, the team found that the engineered cells were 90% effective in preventing the development of type 1 diabetes. The beta cells that are typically destroyed by the immune system in type 1 diabetes were preserved.     https://newsnetwork.mayoclinic.org/discussion/mayo-clinic-researchers-find-sugar-coating-cells-can-protect-those-typically-destroyed-in-type-1-diabetes/ XX A daily pill may be as effective in lowering blood sugar and aiding weight loss in people with Type 2 diabetes as the popular injectable drugs Mounjaro and Ozempic, according to results of a clinical trial announced by Eli Lilly on Thursday morning.   The drug, orforglipron, is a GLP-1, a class of drugs that have become blockbusters because of their weight-loss effects. But the GLP-1s on the market now are expensive, must be kept refrigerated and must be injected. A pill that produces similar results has the potential to become far more widely used, though it is also expected to be expensive.   Lilly said it would seek approval from the Food and Drug Administration later this year to market orforglipron for obesity and early in 2026 for diabetes. https://www.nytimes.com/2025/04/17/health/pill-glp-1-eli-lilly.html XX Use of diabetes technology has dramatically increased and glycemic control has improved among people with type 1 diabetes (T1D) in the US over the past 15 years, but at the same time, overall achievement of an A1c level < 7% remains low and socioeconomic and racial disparities have widened. These findings came from an analysis of national electronic health records of nearly 200,000 children and adults with T1D by Michael Fang, PhD, of the Department of Epidemiology, Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, Baltimore, and colleagues. The study was published online on August 11, 2025, in JAMA Network Open. Use of continuous glucose monitors (CGMs) increased substantially from 2009-2011 to 2021-2023, from less than 5% in both children and adults to more than 80% and over half, respectively. While A1c levels did drop over the 15 years, just 1 in 5 children and slightly over a quarter of adults achieved a level < 7%. The average A1c level stayed above 8%, with ethnic minorities and low-income patients seeing the smallest gains.       https://www.medscape.com/viewarticle/diabetes-tech-use-rise-a1c-reductions-still-lag-2025a1000lc9 XX Inflammation may predict how well people with diabetes respond to depression treatment, and the effects differ dramatically between type 1 and type 2 diabetes. Diabetes and depression often appear together. Indeed, depression is more than three times more prevalent in people with type 1 diabetes (T1D) and nearly twice as prevalent in people with type 2 diabetes (T2D). When they appear together, treatment for depression can vary widely. In a new study, researchers from the German Diabetes Center (DDZ), the Research Institute of the Diabetes Academy Mergentheim (FIDAM), and the German Center for Diabetes Research (DZD) investigated how inflammation in the body relates to improvement in depression symptoms in people with T1D and T2D. The researchers combined data from three previous German randomized clinical trials that aimed to reduce elevated depressive symptoms and diabetes distress in people with type 1 or type 2 diabetes. Diabetes distress is characterized by feelings of overwhelm, frustration, guilt and worry about diabetes management and its potential complications. A total of 332 participants with T1D and 189 with T2D who had completed both a baseline and 12-month follow-up examination were included in the present study. Measures included depression using the Center for Epidemiological Studies Depression scale (CES-D), blood tests for 76 inflammatory biomarkers, and symptoms broken down into cognitive-affective (e.g., feeling hopeless), somatic (e.g., poor sleep, fatigue), and anhedonia (loss of pleasure) clusters.   After adjusting for factors like age, body mass index (BMI), diabetes duration, cholesterol, and co-existing illnesses, the researchers found that in patients with T1D, higher baseline inflammation was linked to smaller improvements in depression. Inflammation seemed to be more connected to physical/somatic symptoms in T1D patients. In those with T2D, higher baseline inflammation was linked to greater improvements in depression. For these patients, the effect was strongest for cognitive-affective and anhedonia – so, emotional and motivational – symptoms.   The researchers weren't sure what caused the difference between T1D and T2D, but they suggest it might be due to the different forms of immune activation seen in each condition. That is, autoimmune processes in type 1 and metabolic inflammation in type 2. https://newatlas.com/health-wellbeing/inflammation-diabetes-depression-treatment/ XX Parents of children diagnosed with type 1 diabetes suffer an income drop in the years following the diagnosis. The impact is more pronounced in mothers, especially mothers of children diagnosed in preschool years. And these findings come from a European study.. not the US. Previous research has shown that parents of children with type 1 diabetes are at increased risk of stress-related symptoms and may need to reduce their working hours. "In our study, we observed reduced parental work-related incomes in the years following the child's type 1 diabetes diagnosis. The drop was larger in mothers than in fathers. Since mothers earned significantly less than fathers in absolute terms, even before the child fell ill, the relative drop in mothers was 6.6% the year following diagnosis compared to 1.5% in fathers. We further note the greatest impact on work-related incomes in mothers of children diagnosed at preschool age," says Beatrice Kennedy, physician at the Endocrine and Diabetes unit at Uppsala University Hospital and Associate Professor of Medical Epidemiology at Uppsala University, who led the study. This is a huge study, builds on data from national population and health registers and the Swedish Child Diabetes Register (Swediabkids). The study includes the parents of more than 13,000 children diagnosed with type 1 diabetes in Sweden in 1993−2014, as well as more than half a million parents in the general population who have children not diagnosed with diabetes.   The researchers observed that the maternal pension-qualifying incomes (a composite outcome including work-related income and societal benefits) initially increased after the child's diagnosis. This was attributable to mothers applying for the parental care allowance from the Swedish Social Insurance Agency. The parental care allowance was intended to compensate for disease-related loss of work-related income and contribute toward disease-specific costs.   When the research team investigated long-term effects in mothers, they found that the pension-qualifying incomes gradually decreased after eight years, and had not recovered by the end of follow-up − 17 years after the children were diagnosed. https://www.news-medical.net/news/20250811/Mothers-face-greater-financial-impact-following-childe28099s-type-1-diabetes-diagnosis.aspx XX The U.S. Department of Justice has reached a settlement with Metro Nashville Public Schools after allegations that the district violated the Americans with Disabilities Act.   The parents of a student at the Ross Early Learning Center requested that the school monitor their child's glucose monitor. Investigators found the school refused to do so, despite the child's Type 1 Diabetes diagnosis.   As part of the settlement, MNPS agreed to change its policies to allow the use of these devices, ensure trained staff can monitor them throughout the entire school day and at school activities, and improve communication with parents. https://www.wsmv.com/2025/08/12/metro-nashville-public-schools-settles-allegations-it-discriminated-against-students-with-diabetes/ XX Modular Medical has unveiled Pivot, its next-generation insulin patch pump technology aimed at simplifying diabetes care. The company announced its new pump for “almost-pumpers” at the Association of Diabetes Care & Education Specialists (“ADCES”) Conference in Phoenix, Arizona this weekend. It aims for Pivot to target adults with a user-friendly, affordable design.   Modular Medical's current pump, the MODD1, won FDA clearance nearly a year ago. It features new microfluidics technology to allow for the low-cost pumping of insulin. The system has a reservoir size of 300 units/3mL. Users can monitor the pump activity with their cell phone and do not require an external controller. The pump uses a provided, single-use, disposable battery.   The company announced recently that it validated its insulin pump cartridge line for human-use production in the U.S. Days later, it reported the first human use of the MODD1 pump.   Now, it has taken the next steps with the debut of a next-gen pump, set for FDA submission in October.   Modular Medical also gamifies diabetes care The company also said ADCES is the place where it will showcase the first playable level of its new Pivot pump gamified trainin module. Level Ex, a developer of medical games, develops the module.   Modular Medical said gamification offers a way to make medical training more effective and efficient while improving information retention. Given the complexity in pump uptake, the company hopes to provide an easy way to bring its technology to clinicians and patients.   The company expects to have training modules available at the same time as the pump's planned launch in 2026.   “Level One is free because diabetes mastery shouldn't come with a price tag,” Sam Glassenberg, CEO of Level Ex, said. “Modular Medical is breaking barriers too – bringing pump therapy to more people through smart, accessible design. Together, we intend to make diabetes management simpler and more inclusive.   “People learn best through play – and we believe they want to learn about insulin pumps the same way. In Level One, players aren't just mastering diabetes management through gameplay – they're asking to ‘play' with pumps: to explore how they work, understand their benefits, and build confidence before using them in real life. The company highlighted its plans for commercial transformation in the U.S. and expansion in international markets, alongside addressing competitive challenges and regulatory impacts. While optimistic about growth in Outside the U.S. (OUS) markets, Tandem is navigating a more competitive landscape domestically. We have entered into the pharmacy channel with Mobi only. And so as Mobi's been building up volume, we're getting experience and we're really learning and understanding what pharmacy offers to us. And the proof points have proved out the thesis I said earlier, which is it can really reduce that barrier for patients, is the out of pocket cost. And so we've decided to accelerate our strategy and where we were starting just with Mobi, we are now moving t slim supplies into the pharmacy channel, and that will kick into gear in the fourth quarter. So as people are looking at the cadence of sales for the remainder of the year with this reframing, many folks are seeing what looks like a a might be an outsized fourth quarter and and having trouble understanding those dynamics. We'll be adding the tSIM supplies to those contracts. We also have more coverage. We will have it in the coming weeks effective this year, so we will be increasing that 30% rate before the end of the year. And then, obviously, everyone's in the same cycle right now already negotiating and discussing their 2026 coverage. And so 30% is the floor.   We do expect to continue to grow that coverage in the coming years, and ultimately have a much broader access. Absolutely. It's an exciting technology that allows for us to have an infusion set that extends the wear time from three days to up to seven days. So we're able to use that as part of an independent infusion set, which would then be used with the t slim and with the mobi pump today. But we're also using that same technology as part of the site that's used for mobi when you use it with a tubeless cartridge. So next year, we will launch Mobi in a patch configuration.   It uses the same pump that's available today, but by using a modified cartridge, you're able to wear it as a patch pump. So one of the things we announced on the call is that we're using this extended wear technology as part of that site. So what it allows you to do is to change the portion that you wear in your skin separate from the timing of when you change the insulin cartridge. So it allows for that extended wear time, reduction of burden to the patient, which is especially important for higher volume insulin users as we expand into type two. So from here, we will launch the extended wear site next year along with we'll do a separate regulatory filing for the cartridge portion for Mobi that includes this extended wear technology as a predicate device. So that's another filing that we'll need to do, but we have the clearance today for the independent infusion set, but we'll file another five ten k for use of the extended wear technology as part of the tubeless Mobi feature. https://za.investing.com/news/transcripts/tandem-diabetes-at-canaccord-conference-strategic-shifts-and-market-focus-93CH-3834464 XX MannKind today announced a significant regulatory submission and a large financing agreement with Blackstone. The company submitted its lead inhaled insulin product for expanded FDA approval and secured $500 million in funding, it said.   First, the Danbury, Connecticut-based company announced that it submitted a supplemental Biologics License Application (sBLA) for Afrezza, its inhaled insulin product, in the pediatric population.   MannKind Director of Medical and Scientific Engagement Joanne Rinker, MS, RDN, BC-ADM, CDCES, LDN, FADCES, told Drug Delivery Business News at ADA 2025 that a submission was on the way for children and adolescents aged 4-17 years old. Further data shared at ADA found Afrezza both safe and effective in that age range.   Afrezza is a fast-acting insulin formulation delivered through an inhaler device. MannKind engineered the mechanical inhaler device to slowly bring powder into the lung. A small compartment opens for the insertion of the insulin cartridge, then the user closes it. The only other component is a mouthpiece for the sake of cleanliness. Then, the inhalation takes just two seconds. It requires no electronics or extra components.   The company expects a review acceptance decision early in the fourth quarter of 2025.   “The submission of our supplemental Biologics License Application (sBLA) for Afrezza in pediatric patients is a meaningful milestone for MannKind and people living with diabetes,” said Michael Castagna, CEO of MannKind Corporation.   Additional funding provides a significant boost for MannKind MannKind also announced a strategic financing agreement with funds managed by Blackstone worth up to $500 million. The financing provides MannKind with non-dilutive capital to advance its short- and long-term growth strategies.   This senior secured credit facility includes a $75 million initial term loan funded at closing. It then has a $125 million delayed draw term loan available for the next 24 months. Finally, it features an additional $300 million uncommitted delayed draw term loan available at the mutual consent of MannKind and Blackstone.   The facility bears interest at a calculated SOFR variable rate plus 4.75% and matures in August 2030.   “This strategic financing significantly increases our operating flexibility and provides us substantial access to non-dilutive capital on favorable terms, complementing our strong cash position,” said Castagna. “The funding will support the expansion of our commercial team in preparation for the anticipated launch of the pediatric indication for Afrezza, if approved, continued pipeline advancement, potential business development opportunities, and general corporate purposes. Medtronic Diabetes — soon to be MiniMed after its planned separation from the medtech giant – said in the post that the new sensor specifically designed for its own systems is called “Instinct.”   “Get a sneak peek at what's coming next: the Instinct sensor,” the business unit's account wrote. “Made by Abbott, the Instinct sensor is designed exclusively for MiniMed systems. We'll share more details about the Instinct sensor when it's commercially available.”   The sensor, built on the Abbott FreeStyle Libre platform, reflects “the power of the partnership,” Abbott EVP, Diabetes Care, Chris Scoggins, told Drug Delivery Business News earlier this year.   Medtronic and Abbott — two of the largest diabetes tech companies in the world — announced a year ago that they entered into a global partnership pairing Abbott continuous glucose monitors (CGMs) with Medtronic insulin delivery systems.   The partnership aims to collaborate on a system based on Abbott's FreeStyle Libre CGMs with Medtronic's automated insulin delivery technology (the latest generation being the MiniMed 780G) and smart insulin pen systems, such as the InPen system.   Read more about Medtronic, Abbott and the rest of the diabetes tech industry in our free Diabetes Technology Special Report. Medtronic's systems previously used its own CGMs, such as the Guardian 4 and the Simplera platform, and the company intends to continue using those systems as part of a comprehensive CGM portfolio. Under the companies' agreement, the systems would be sold exclusively by Medtronic — including the Abbott CGM.   The companies brought the partnership a step further in April when Medtronic announced the submission of an interoperable pump with the Abbott sensor technology to the FDA. If there was any passage in the Bible that appears to be a contradiction from what we read in other books of the Bible, it is James 2:24, which states: You see that a person is justified by works and not by faith alone. This verse seems to contradict what Paul wrote in his epistle to the Ephesians: For by grace you have been saved through faith; and this is not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; not a result of works, so that no one may boast (2:8-9). So which is it? Is salvation a gift from God that can be received apart from anything we do, or is salvation something you have to work hard at keeping? In the 1980s these questions were popularized and brought to the forefront of theological discussions had in many homes and churches. At the heart of these discussions was the question: What does it means to believe in Jesus? Zane Hodges wrote his book, Absolutely Free arguing that nowhere in the Bible does it teach that belief in Jesus for eternal salvation requires a person to repent of his/her sins. Hodges went as far to say that a person can be a Christian and at the same time not love God. In response to Zane Hodges book, John MacArthur wrote The Gospel According to Jesus; in his book, he argued that true salvation involves a lifelong commitment to Jesus, which is the evidence of true biblical belief. Those who agreed with Zane Hodges labeled the teachings of people like John MacArthur as Lordship Salvation. Those who agreed with John MacArthur labeled the teachings of people like Zane Hodges as Easy Believism. Far from being a modern controversy, the argument between Hodges and MacArthur was simply an old theological debate dressed in newer garb. I do not have the time to give a history lesson as to what led up to Hodges and MacArthur duking it out in the form of books, but you should know about the idea if you just believe and say a prayer, that you will be saved. There is a theological stream that led to language you are probably familiar with, such as: Ten said Yes to Jesus! Or you may have had someone in your life encourage you to repeat a prayer, for if you just say the words, you can be saved just so long as you believe the words to be true in your mind. In 1763, a well-known Scottish author and pastor named Robert Sandeman (17181771) arrived in Danbury, Connecticut. His central teaching was that bare assent to the work of Christ alone is necessary for salvation. In other words, Sandeman argued that simply believing in Jesus was enough to be savedyou didnt have to follow Him or demonstrate love for Him. In Sandemans view, requiring evidence of love or a changed life made works a necessary part of salvation, which he firmly rejected. By the time Sandeman set foot in Connecticut, his writings and ideas had already spread widely through American churches. Ezra Stiles, who befriended Sandeman and would later become president of Yale University, remarked, I believe he has sown a seed in America which will up and grow, though I have no apprehension of any great ill effect.[1] Sandemans doctrine, which came to be known as Sandemanianism and is now often labeled easy-believism, was more than a theological curiosityit ignited debate and concern that ripple through the church to this day. What academic circles now call Free Grace Theology became the very ground upon which Zane Hodges and John MacArthur sparred. The warnings of giants like John Wesley (an Arminian) and Andrew Fuller (a Calvinist), echo through history: Sandemanianism, they cautioned, might lull the church into a shallow faith, one that confuses mere intellectual agreement with living trust. Its legacy remains, challenging and shaping the contours of American evangelicalism across generations. My hope today is not that you are more informed, but that you are more grounded in the Bible. At the end of the day, it doesnt matter what I think; what matters is what does the Bible have to say about it! So, let us turn to our text this morning to find out. A Grounded Faith is an Active Faith (vv. 14-17) James askes a question in verse 14, What use is it, my brothers and sisters, if someone says he has faith, but he has no works? Can that faith save him? He then gives us an example of what a faith devoid of works looks like in real-time: If a brother or sister is without clothing and in need of daily food, and one of you says to them, Go in peace, be warmed and be filled, yet you do not give them what is necessary for their body, what use is that (v. 15)? What is James getting at in these verses? He is picking up on what He said in 2:1-13 and forcing us to take a long, hard look into the mirror of Gods word to examine our hearts. If you say that your faith is in Jesus as the One who died for your sins and rose from the grave, then how can you pass by a brother or sister who shares your faith in Jesus who is in need and do nothing to help that person? Genuine faith will result in genuine, although not perfect, love for those who share in your faith in Jesus? Just so you know, James is not the only one who asks this question. The apostle John had some things to say about a faith grounded in Jesus being an active faith: Beloved, lets love one another; for love is from God, and everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God. The one who does not love does not know God, because God is love. By this the love of God was revealed in us, that God has sent His only Son into the world so that we may live through Him. In this is love, not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son to be the propitiation for our sins (1 John 4:7-10). Where on earth did John and James get their understanding of genuine faith from? They both got it from Jesus, who said, I am giving you a new commandment, that you love one another; just as I have loved you, that you also love one another(John 13:34). Again, John wrote in his epistle, This is His commandment, that we believe in the name of His Son Jesus Christ, and love one another, just as He commanded us. The one who keeps His commandments remains in Him, and He in him. We know by this that He remains in us, by the Spirit whom He has given us (1 John 3:23-24). But, John and James are not the only ones who understood that a faith grounded in Jesus was an active faith, for the apostle Paul wrote: For by grace you have been saved through faith; and this is not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; not a result of works, so that no one may boast. For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand so that we would walk in them (Eph. 2:8-10). Listen, salvation is the free gift of God made available through His Son that you cannot earn or work for. However, when you are genuinely saved by Jesus, you are then born again (John 3:1-21). When you are born again you go from being spiritually dead, to being made spiritually alive with Jesus (Eph. 2:1-6). The evidence that you are alive with Christ is a faith that is living! In the words of Paul, and in light of our salvation that is from God, you are to walk in a manner worthy of the calling with which you have been called... Paul did not stop there, he continued: walk in a manner worthy of the calling with which you have been called, with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love (Eph. 4:1-2). The clearest sign of being born again is a life transformeda faith that is alive, first in love for God and then in love for others. This is why Jesus described a coming day of judgment, when all people will be separated into two groups: the sheep on His right and the goats on His left. The difference between them will be revealed in how they responded, with love and compassion, to those in need. Jesus will say to the sheep, Come, you who are blessed of My Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world. For I was hungry, and you gave Me something to eat; I was thirsty, and you gave Me something to drink; I was a stranger, and you invited Me in; naked, and you clothed Me; I was sick, and you visited Me; I was in prison, and you came to Me (Matt. 25:34-36). Those who ignored the brother or sister who was hungry, thirsty, need shelter, needed clothing, was sick and needed care, or was in prison... will hear these words: Depart from Me, you accursed people, into the eternal fire which has been prepared for the devil and his angels.... Truly I say to you, to the extent that you did not do it for one of the least of these, you did not do it for Me, either. These will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life (25:41, 45-46). A Grounded Faith is a Sacrificial Faith (vv. 18-26) When it comes to what read in James and what we read in Pauls letters, Timothy Keller said when looking at something with only one eye, you lose depth perception. To appreciate something for what it really is, you need two eyes. Why? Because each eye is looking from a slightly different perspective at the same object, and as a result you see it better.[2] The problem with Robert Sandeman, Zane Hodges, and Free Grace Theology is that they are only looking at Scripture with one eye, and in doing so, their sermons and books suffer from a distorted theological depth perception problem. Do you want to know one way you can make sure you have both eyes open? Have one eye on the text you are reading and the other on the rest of Scripture. James is not saying works first then faith later; what he is saying is that a faith that has generated new life in God is a faith that acts on the belief it rests in. To say you believe is easy; to act upon your belief is evidence that you believe. This is James point in verse 18, But someone may well say, You have faith and I have works; show me your faith without the works, and I will show you my faith by my works. Let me share an illustration from our family that may help you understand what James is saying here. Recently our family went on an Alaskan cruse; we probably never would have gone on a cruise during this season in our lives had it not been for my mother and step-father inviting us to go with them with all expenses paid on our behalf. Not only was the cruise paid for, but all of our travel expenses were paid for too! The package that my mother and stepfather paid for included all of our meals, and that the cruise line provided a medallion that we could either wear around our neck, or our wrist, which functioned as a pass for just about everything, including anything we wanted to eat or drink. We were told that we could order anything we wanted from an app on our phones that was synced to our medallion and that a server would deliver the food to us no mater were we were. All of it was paid for and I did not have to do a thing to earn it. However, my belief that was true was evidenced by acting upon the gift that was bought and paid for on my behalf. The difference between my experience on the Alaskan cruise and being born again, is that with my salvation came a new nature that involved a heart change. So what happened when I genuinely believed the gospel of Jesus Christ? I received the promise of Ezekiel 36:26, I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you; and I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh. I received the circumcision of the heart promised in Deuteronomy 30:6 that frees me up to Love God with all my heart and all of my soul, so that I may live. Here is how the NLT translates this verse: The Lord your God will change your heart and the hearts of all your descendants, so that you will love him with all your heart and soul and so you may live! James is saying that if you really believe what you say you believe, then the evidence that you really do believe will be seen in your actions. But James is not just talking about acting in light of what you believe, no... he is talking about something more than intellect and actions. Notice what he says in verse 19, You believe that God is one. You do well; the demons also believe, and shudder. Do you see what James is doing here? The demons do not have a theological problem when it comes to their intellect, but they do have a heart problem! The fruit of genuine belief that involves the mind and heart are actions that reveal that a spiritual resurrection has taken place and that you have gone from death to life. Faith without action reveals a deeper issuea problem of the heart. If faith shows no signs of life, it isnt truly alive. To illustrate this, James points to two powerful examples from Scripture: Abraham and Rahab. Both demonstrated their genuine belief in God not just through words, but through courageous acts of obedience. They trusted God so completely that they were willing to risk everything, proving that living faith always moves us to action, even when it requires sacrifice. Conclusion Consider Abrahams journeya life seasoned with trials and tests, both by circumstance and by his own choices. For years, Abraham and Sarah hoped and longed for the promise of an heir to become their reality. Miraculously God fulfilled His promise to the elderly couple and when we reach the dramatic moment in Genesis 22 that James refers to, God commanded Abraham to do the unthinkablesacrifice Isaac. Abrahams faith had been forged in the furnace of experience. He was finally able to trust God, even when the command seemed impossible to understand. When Abraham, Isaac, and their servants arrived at the mountain, Abraham told his servants, Stay here with the donkey, and I and the boy will go over there; and we will worship and return to you (Gen. 22:5). Despite the looming test, Abraham expressed confidence that both he and Isaac would return. This conviction shows that Abrahams faith wasnt just a matter of wordshe truly believed that God was both good and powerful enough to raise the dead if necessary. James continues in verse 25, In the same way, was Rahab the prostitute not justified by works also when she received the messengers and sent them out by another way? The messengers were spies that Joshua sent into Jericho to assess what they were up against. When the king of Jericho learned that the spies were in Jericho, he searched for them, but Rahab hid them. Before she helped them escape undetected, she said to them: I know that the Lord has given you the land, and that the terror of you has fallen on us, and that all the inhabitants of the land have despaired because of you. For we have heard how the Lord dried up the water of the Red Sea before you when you came out of Egypt.... When we heard these reports, our hearts melted and no courage remained in anyone any longer because of you; for the Lord your God, He is God in heaven above and on earth below. (Josh. 2:9-11) The evidence that she really did believe what she said about the God of the Hebrews is seen in her hiding the spies and then helping them escape at great personal risk to herself. Abraham was told to sacrifice his son, but he did not have to because God provided a sacrifice in place of Isaac. Many years later, the Son of God would climb up to the top of Golgotha out of obedience to His Father to die for sins we are guilty of. Jesus died to redeem and make you new for good works, which God prepared beforehand so that we would walk in them (Eph. 2:10). Rahab hid and protected the spies when there was no law requiring her to do so. In so doing, her life was not only spared, but God had a greater purpose she could not have been aware existed, to include her great grandchild being King David, and from David would come the promises King of kings, the Lord Jesus Christ. So, I leave you with a few questions: What is your Isaac that God is asking you to place upon His altar of sacrifice and why have you been reluctant to do so? What is your Jericho that God is asking you to forsake, and why have you been reluctant to let it go? Remember that God is asking these things of you because He is both holy and good. You say that you believe God to be so, therefore trust Him by obeying Him. Christian, God loves you and He ultimately intends good for you. For I was hungry, and you gave Me something to eat; I was thirsty, and you gave Me something to drink; I was a stranger, and you invited Me in; naked, and you clothed Me; I was sick, and you visited Me; I was in prison, and you came to Me (Matt. 25:34-36). Those who ignored the brother or sister who was hungry, thirsty, need shelter, needed clothing, was sick and needed care, or was in prison... will hear these words: Depart from Me, you accursed people, into the eternal fire which has been prepared for the devil and his angels.... Truly I say to you, to the extent that you did not do it for one of the least of these, you did not do it for Me, either. These will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life (25:41, 45-46). A Grounded Faith is a Sacrificial Faith (vv. 18-26) When it comes to what read in James and what we read in Pauls letters, Timothy Keller said when looking at something with only one eye, you lose depth perception. To appreciate something for what it really is, you need two eyes. Why? Because each eye is looking from a slightly different perspective at the same object, and as a result you see it better.[2] The problem with Robert Sandeman, Zane Hodges, and Free Grace Theology is that they are only looking at Scripture with one eye, and in doing so, their sermons and books suffer from a distorted theological depth perception problem. Do you want to know one way you can make sure you have both eyes open? Have one eye on the text you are reading and the other on the rest of Scripture. James is not saying works first then faith later; what he is saying is that a faith that has generated new life in God is a faith that acts on the belief it rests in. To say you believe is easy; to act upon your belief is evidence that you believe. This is James point in verse 18, But someone may well say, You have faith and I have works; show me your faith without the works, and I will show you my faith by my works. Let me share an illustration from our family that may help you understand what James is saying here. Recently our family went on an Alaskan cruse; we probably never would have gone on a cruise during this season in our lives had it not been for my mother and step-father inviting us to go with them with all expenses paid on our behalf. Not only was the cruise paid for, but all of our travel expenses were paid for too! The package that my mother and stepfather paid for included all of our meals, and that the cruise line provided a medallion that we could either wear around our neck, or our wrist, which functioned as a pass for just about everything, including anything we wanted to eat or drink. We were told that we could order anything we wanted from an app on our phones that was synced to our medallion and that a server would deliver the food to us no mater were we were. All of it was paid for and I did not have to do a thing to earn it. However, my belief that was true was evidenced by acting upon the gift that was bought and paid for on my behalf. The difference between my experience on the Alaskan cruise and being born again, is that with my salvation came a new nature that involved a heart change. So what happened when I genuinely believed the gospel of Jesus Christ? I received the promise of Ezekiel 36:26, I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you; and I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh. I received the circumcision of the heart promised in Deuteronomy 30:6 that frees me up to Love God with all my heart and all of my soul, so that I may live. Here is how the NLT translates this verse: The Lord your God will change your heart and the hearts of all your descendants, so that you will love him with all your heart and soul and so you may live! James is saying that if you really believe what you say you believe, then the evidence that you really do believe will be seen in your actions. But James is not just talking about acting in light of what you believe, no... he is talking about something more than intellect and actions. Notice what he says in verse 19, You believe that God is one. You do well; the demons also believe, and shudder. Do you see what James is doing here? The demons do not have a theological problem when it comes to their intellect, but they do have a heart problem! The fruit of genuine belief that involves the mind and heart are actions that reveal that a spiritual resurrection has taken place and that you have gone from death to life. Faith without action reveals a deeper issuea problem of the heart. If faith shows no signs of life, it isnt truly alive. To illustrate this, James points to two powerful examples from Scripture: Abraham and Rahab. Both demonstrated their genuine belief in God not just through words, but through courageous acts of obedience. They trusted God so completely that they were willing to risk everything, proving that living faith always moves us to action, even when it requires sacrifice. Conclusion Consider Abrahams journeya life seasoned with trials and tests, both by circumstance and by his own choices. For years, Abraham and Sarah hoped and longed for the promise of an heir to become their reality. Miraculously God fulfilled His promise to the elderly couple and when we reach the dramatic moment in Genesis 22 that James refers to, God commanded Abraham to do the unthinkablesacrifice Isaac. Abrahams faith had been forged in the furnace of experience. He was finally able to trust God, even when the command seemed impossible to understand. When Abraham, Isaac, and their servants arrived at the mountain, Abraham told his servants, Stay here with the donkey, and I and the boy will go over there; and we will worship and return to you (Gen. 22:5). Despite the looming test, Abraham expressed confidence that both he and Isaac would return. This conviction shows that Abrahams faith wasnt just a matter of wordshe truly believed that God was both good and powerful enough to raise the dead if necessary. James continues in verse 25, In the same way, was Rahab the prostitute not justified by works also when she received the messengers and sent them out by another way? The messengers were spies that Joshua sent into Jericho to assess what they were up against. When the king of Jericho learned that the spies were in Jericho, he searched for them, but Rahab hid them. Before she helped them escape undetected, she said to them: I know that the Lord has given you the land, and that the terror of you has fallen on us, and that all the inhabitants of the land have despaired because of you. For we have heard how the Lord dried up the water of the Red Sea before you when you came out of Egypt.... When we heard these reports, our hearts melted and no courage remained in anyone any longer because of you; for the Lord your God, He is God in heaven above and on earth below. (Josh. 2:9-11) The evidence that she really did believe what she said about the God of the Hebrews is seen in her hiding the spies and then helping them escape at great personal risk to herself. Abraham was told to sacrifice his son, but he did not have to because God provided a sacrifice in place of Isaac. Many years later, the Son of God would climb up to the top of Golgotha out of obedience to His Father to die for sins we are guilty of. Jesus died to redeem and make you new for good works, which God prepared beforehand so that we would walk in them (Eph. 2:10). Rahab hid and protected the spies when there was no law requiring her to do so. In so doing, her life was not only spared, but God had a greater purpose she could not have been aware existed, to include her great grandchild being King David, and from David would come the promises King of kings, the Lord Jesus Christ. So, I leave you with a few questions: What is your Isaac that God is asking you to place upon His altar of sacrifice and why have you been reluctant to do so? What is your Jericho that God is asking you to forsake, and why have you been reluctant to let it go? Remember that God is asking these things of you because He is both holy and good. You say that you believe God to be so, therefore trust Him by obeying Him. Christian, God loves you and He ultimately intends good for you. State lawmakers approved sweeping regulatory changes during the 2025 legislative session to replace the antiquated Transfer Act with new release-based cleanup regulations. When the new regulations take effect March 2026, it will be the culmination of years of collaboration between key stakeholders, including CBIA member companies, the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection, and Department of Economic and Community Development. “It had to be a partnership between the business community and state agencies to get this done,” says CBIA's Pete Myers. Myers and Robinson+Cole's Emilee Mooney Scott joined the CBIA BizCast to break down the regulations and why the shift will have a positive impact on the state's economy. Mooney Scott said conversations around replacing the Transfer Act have been ongoing since she joined Robinson+Cole in 2011. She said the Transfer Act required filings and costly environmental investigations when owners tried to transfer ownership of their property. “An enormous amount of time and money goes into that evaluation,” she said. She added that the process is onerous and inefficient and “chills economic development and real estate transactions.” Under the new regulations, Mooney Scott said contamination must be investigated and remediated when a release occurs. “So, if you kick over a drum—it occurs today, or when a past release is discovered,” she said. “There's no particular requirement to go out and prove a negative.” Connecticut based the new regulations in part on a similar system already in place in Massachusetts. “We're a different state than Massachusetts,” Myers said. “But it was certainly a roadmap that we wanted to follow. “How can we be similar to states around us, but yet still be more competitive in those states around us?” Myers said the updated regulations will help promote economic development, particularly in cities and downtown areas. “You're going to see a tremendous amount of sites become available in our downtowns, like Waterbury and Danbury, that are now available for economic development,” he said. Myers and Mooney Scott said it was important that the state and the regulated community keep making the program better. Because of that, the working group that's been part of the effort to create the new regulations will continue to provide input into the program. “We've been building this shiny new vehicle, but we won't really know how it drives until we take it for a spin,” Mooney Scott said. “And we're not taking it for a spin until March 1. So, it is a huge relief that there is this feedback mechanism in place to evaluate how it drives.” As businesses prepare for the new system, Mooney Scott plans to do a video series with Robinson+Cole to help them understand the regulations. Mooney Scott and Myers encouraged businesses who are either working through the Transfer Act or planning to use the new release-based cleanup regulations to share their feedback through CBIA's E2: Energy & Environment Council. “Members of the business community can be a bit reluctant to raise their own hands and say, I am having this problem,” Mooney Scott said. “E2 can take that feedback and pass it up in a way that helps the individual members.” “It's a tremendous resource to have access to people like Emily and the rest of our members,” Myers added. For Mid-Atlantic folks, think of U.S. 50 traffic from Annapolis to the 301/50 split… for everyone else just imagine trying to exit a large parking lot on July 4th.There's no bridge to the islands, so anyone hoping to get their car over there collects in Woods Hole, in a parking lot the size of a small Walmart. This is the hub of: No bridge/ this is the only way to get your car over there.So in the older times of madness, when just showing up at the Woods Hole Terminal before noon got you over to an island by the end of the day… congratulations. Now you're stuck with 1980s or '90s technology, it's hot as ****, and your kids have been bored with travel Yahtzee since ****** Danbury. (I should mention there was the occasional dreaded Steamship employee blocking entry, waving a white handkerchief and shouting, “We're full!”) Cars wrapped maddeningly around the old terminal. Station wagons and minivans rumbled, coughing black smoke. Wheels neared edges that dropped into the harbor. A bewildering ballet.After an hour in standby your brain begins to decide you're starting to get close. Only to be quickly routed into a line snaking under the ****** bridge on the far end that surely would take four hours to return from.And it amazingly it worked out pretty well for us standby folks.Tempers occasionally spilled over. No smartphones then—so the most interesting thing you could access in the car was the radio and the hazard lights. By Davy Crockett In 1889, "Old Sport" Peter Napoleon Campana (1836-1905) returned home to Bridgeport, Connecticut, after his four-month trip to California. His celebrity status had increased because of news stories across the country about how he beat up the unscrupulous race manager, Frank W. Hall (1860-1923). During his ten-year ultrarunning career thus far, he had competed in at least 42 races, including 24 six-day races. As he did each summer, Campana took time away from racing, but frequently made appearances at local sporting events, including foot races. New book! As I researched for these podcast episodes, I realized that I had enough content for an entire amusing and interesting book. This episode previews chapter eight of the book. Parker (1853-1926), took a bet to walk from Hartford, Connecticut to New Haven, Connecticut and back, 72 miles in 26 hours. He walked with a young man, Fred Robertson. They finished at Dwight Mitchell's Saloon in 24.5 hours. “There was quite a crowd in the saloon awaiting the coming of the pedestrians. Conspicuous among them, both on account of his appearance and his senile garrulity, was Old Sport Campana. This old, broken-down warhorse wanted to bet he could cover the distance in sixteen hours. Then he took several turns up and down the long room to show his skill as a pedestrian.” He found no takers of his bet. Parker and Robertson received quite an ovation. Campana published a boxing challenge to the world. “I, Napoleon Campana, alias Old Sport, hereby challenge any man in the world 61 years of age, to fight to a finish, London prize ring rules, for the sum of $500 a side. If this challenge is not accepted, I claim for myself the title of champion of the world.” No one took up the wager, so he must have become the champion boxer of the world. He next issued a challenge to race any man over 60 years in a 100-mile race. Campana was actually 52 years old. It would not have been a fair race. It September 1889, Campana announced that he was in training for his “farewell race in America,” a six-day twelve-hours-per-day race to be held at the Polo Rink in New Haven, Connecticut. Would it really be the last race of his career? He was asked how he made a living. He replied, “I don't work for a living young feller.” He demanded $250 from the race manager, James L.
