Brian Cox and Robin Ince kindly open the door for each other as they step into understanding altruism asking why humans have evolved to help each. Joining them to explore the human tendency to be kind is evolutionary biologist Steve Jones, psychologist Matti Wilks and comedian Jo Brand. Starting with the animal kingdom we probe the biological underpinnings of why organisms might act to help others at an energetic cost to themselves and where this fits alongside the theory of evolution. We explore how the development of human societies has necessitated altruistic behaviours and how these manifest in our modern lives. Matti introduces the idea of moral circles as we ask why are we more generous to some people than others. We explore how children feel about being kind to those close and far away with some surprising recent findings and finally consider what can encourage more altruistic behaviour.Producer: Melanie Brown Exec Producer: Alexandra Feachem Assistant Producer: Olivia Jani

This episode features a conversation Nick Oldridge, co-founder of Climate Science Breakthrough, a project working to translate the hard data of climate change into emotional, shareable, and actionable formats. It was recorded in November 2023.Nick is an advocate for climate awareness and is an ambassador for Zero Hour, a campaign in support of establishing the UK's Climate & Ecology Bill. He dedicates himself to narrowing the divide between the general public and the complexities of climate science. Nick applies his background in marketing to his work in environmental advocacy, bringing this experience to bear in his efforts to convey intricate climate issues to a diverse audience.Motivated by a pressing need to broaden the public's grasp of climate science, in 2023, Nick co-founded Climate Science Breakthrough alongside climate communications lab, Utopia Bureau, and is focused on initiating a societal transformation that accelerates climate action. Recent videos in the Climate Science Translated series include contributions from comedians Jonathan Pie, Nish Kumar, and Jo Brand.Amongst other things, Nick and I discussed the rationale behind Climate Science Breakthrough's work bringing together climate scientists and comedians to create viral climate content, what makes comedians a useful vehicle for this kind of information in the first place, and the value that marketing minds can bring to the climate context. From the optimal strategy to finding your true love, to how to fix a wonky table in the pub, thinking like a mathematician can help you in some very unlikely situations. They discover how mathematical thinking can help answer some truly out of this world questions as well: how much soup would it take to fill the solar system? What would happen if you shrink Jupiter to the size of a house? Not problems we'd encounter in every day life maybe, but all questions sent to Randall Munroe for his "What If?" series of books. Life at Death's Door. Radio documentary. When it comes to death, we are bad consumers. Because we don't plan ahead, because we don't talk about it, we are in a state of shock and exhaustion. We don't question, we don't shop around and it makes us very vulnerable potentially. This award winning audio documentary deals with our universal attitudes to death and dying. The first episode, in two parts, is narrated by the magnificent Brian Blessed. The following episode, also in two parts, is narrated by the fabulous Jo Brand.

In this episode, we look at some of the incredible ways we can commemorate our dead and find out how we can conduct our own unique funeral celebrations, to better reflect the lives our loved ones have lived. Narrated by Jo Brand. What drives us to wear black, have a wooden coffin and to give our loved ones what we consider to be a “dignified” funeral at staggering expense? Before Queen Victoria, we used to bury our own – now it is almost the exclusive domain of the funeral industry and with an average funeral costing £3,500, perhaps it's time we looked for alternatives?

Lynne Segal and Susie Orbach in conversation Feminist writer and activist, Lynne Segal, discusses her recently published Out of Time: The Pleasures and Perils of Ageing with psychotherapist, psychoanalyst, social critic and writer Susie Orbach - author of many celebrated books, amongst them Bodies and On Eating, and recently co-edited Fifty Shades of Feminism, with Lisa Appignanesi and Rachel Holmes. In her autobiography Making Trouble (2007), Segal described herself as ‘a reluctantly ageing woman', and mused about the need for ‘a feminist sexual politics of ageing'. Out of Time is her answer to these issues. Fears of ageing, Segal argues, are fed to us from childhood in stories and fairy tales full of monstrous, quintessentially female, figures. She confronts the simplistic attributions of generational blame frequently named as causes of the economic crisis, the growing erotic invisibility for ageing women as well as the expectations of gender and ageing that inevitably constrain ambition and political engagement.  Out of Time also examines the representation of ageing in the work of other writers (many of them feminists) including Simone de Beauvoir, Alice Walker, Adrienne Rich, Philip Roth, Diane Athill, Joyce Carol Oates, John Berger, Grace Paley, Jo Brand, Jacques Derrida and John Updike.
