Alexei Sayle has spent a lifetime finding humour in anger, absurdity and the systems that shape us. Raised in Liverpool by fiercely committed communist parents, his childhood was filled with politics, protest marches and unusual cultural influences - from Soviet cinema to family trips behind the Iron Curtain. In this episode of Full Disclosure, James O'Brien sits down with the comedian, writer and actor to trace the path from a rebellious schoolboy and struggling art student to the incendiary force at the heart of alternative comedy. Alexei recalls discovering his voice at the Comedy Store, forging lifelong friendships with Rik Mayall, Adrian Edmondson, Nigel Planer and the Comic Strip generation, and becoming known for a furious on-stage persona that often bore little resemblance to the man offstage. He reflects on success, creative reinvention and the strange experience of falling out of fashion before returning to stand-up with a more personal, contemplative voice. Alexei also discusses his lifelong political activism, the ideals he inherited from his parents, and the tension between wanting to change the world and recognising the limits of protest. It's a funny, candid and deeply thoughtful conversation about comedy, conviction, reinvention and the complicated business of staying true to yourself.Find out more about How I've Tried to Change the World: By Walking Down the Middle of the Street Shouting by Alexei Sayle here Full Disclosure is a Global ProductionListen or watch every Friday on Global Player, YouTube or wherever you get your podcasts.

Digital sovereignty is one of the most talked-about topics in European tech policy right now and according to Alexei Balaganski, most of the conversation is going in completely the wrong direction. In this episode, Matthias sits down with Alexei to challenge the assumptions behind the sovereignty debate, redefine what the term actually means, and lay out what organizations should really be doing about it. Key Topics: ✅ Why the "digital sovereignty" conversation has gone wrong — and what Alcatraz has to do with it✅ The only correct definition of sovereignty: can you keep operating when a dependency disappears?✅ Why sovereignty is just business continuity engineering — not a procurement decision✅ How sovereign Europe really is today: the numbers are worse than you think✅ Why "buy European" is a political preference, not a security strategy✅ Decentralization, crypto agility, and distributed storage as practical sovereignty tools

Bonus episode from the newsletter On This Day in Women's History! In the evening of July 16, 1918, the Romanov family went to bed as usual in Ipatiev House, where they were being held under house arrest. But they were awoken in the middle of the night, ostensibly so they could be moved to a safer location. The former Tsar Nikolai and the former Tsarina Alexandra went downstairs to the cellar with their four daughters and one son: Olga, Tatiana, Maria, Anastasia, and Alexei. They would never come up again. There are two ways to sign up for the newsletter: Patreon (https://www.patreon.com/user?u=83998235) Substack (https://bit.ly/4wpOe5h) Either way, the story about the historical woman is free, along with news about the podcast, and a place to share your recommendations for historical books, movies, shows, etc. If you sign up as a subscriber, you're also helping me keep this show going, and I'll send you bonus content each week as a thank you. We are back again with our second episode of our Tales from the Crypt of the Everflame series, DM'd by Nick! We start out by introducing a new PC, as Alexei joins the group, playing the character Maris. The original party of Jacob, Valeria, and THE Smegrun awaken from their first night on the road to the Crypt of the Everflame. The Smegrun's watch is interrupted by distant growls, phantom howls, and the creeping suspicion that reality itself is out to get him. The Smegrun rushes to wake the others, only to discover something truly baffling: inside Jacob and Valeria's tent is second tent. A tent‑ception. A structural mystery that Terrence immediately declares “a profound commentary on layered realities." After rousing the camp and finding nothing, the group settles back down... That is until the wolves return... along with a mysterious stranger. Can the newly‑formed party survive the night and continue their journey to light the Everflame? Will Terrence and The Smegrun uncover the secrets of the universe before breakfast? What sort of mysteries will the party encounter along the way? Only one way to find out! It's Marvel Monday and we're diving deep into Black Widow's past! ABOUT BLACK WIDOW Natasha Romanoff confronts the darker parts of her ledger when a dangerous conspiracy with ties to her past arises. AIR DATE & NETWORK FOR BLACK WIDOW July 9, 2021 | Theatrical Release / Disney+ CAST & CREW OF BLACK WIDOW Director: Cate Shortland Writers: Eric Pearson, Jac Schaeffer, Ned Benson Cast: Scarlett Johansson as Natasha Romanoff/Black Widow Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova David Harbour as Alexei Rachel Weisz as Melina Ray Winstone as Dreykov BRAN'S MOVIE SYNOPSIS The movies in 1995 with a normal family living in Ohio, including two young girls. One day, the dad comes home and is like it's time to go on a big adventure. They pack quickly get in the car and speed off just as the cops are starting to show up. Turns out, this isn't a normal family. It's Russian super soldier Alexei and his Black Widow operative wife. Natasha Romanoff and Yelena Belova pose as their daughters while they're working undercover. With valuable S.H.I.E.L.D. intelligence in hand, they flee to Cuba and Via montage, we see Natasha and Yelana being trained up by the Red Room become Black Widows. 21 years later, Natasha is on the run after violating the Sokovia Accords. She goes to a safehouse when at the same time, Yelena kills a rogue former Widow but is exposed to a synthetic antidote that frees her from the Red Room's chemical mind control. Hoping Natasha and the Avengers can help free the remaining Widows, Yelena sends several antidote vials to Natasha before going into hiding. While unknowingly transporting the vials, Natasha is ambushed by the mysterious masked person named The Taskmaster. After escaping, she reunites with Yelena and learns about what's still going on. Determined to destroy the Red Room, Natasha and Yelena free their ol papa Alexei from prison, hoping he knows where the Red Room leader is at. He directs them to their ol mama Melina, who lives on a farm. Although Melina secretly alerts Dreykov, Natasha convinces her to switch sides, and the two use advanced face-mask technology to exchange identities before being taken to the Red Room in the sky. Dreykov quickly realizes Natasha's disguise. Natasha discovers that every Widow is biologically unable to harm Dreykov because of a pheromone lock, so she deliberately breaks her own nose to sever her sense of smell and overcome the conditioning. Dreykov attempts to escape while the remaining Widows attack Natasha, but Yelena releases the antidote gas, freeing them from Dreykov's control. Natasha copies the locations of Widows stationed around the world from Dreykov's computer as the damaged facility begins to collapse. She rescues the remaining antidote vials and frees Taskmaster. Natasha gives the viral and the locations of the remaining widows to Yelena so she can rescue the others. Natasha goes to free the imprisoned Avengers. Cut to after Natasha's death, Valentina Allegra de Fontaine visits Yelena at Natasha's grave. Claiming that Clint Barton is responsible for Natasha's death, Yelena now has her next target. Best known for her provocative comedy ATTENBERG and the unnervingly satirical CHEVALIER, Athina Rachel Tsangari helped define what critics dubbed the “Greek Weird Wave,” alongside longtime collaborator Yorgos Lanthimos. A longtime filmmaking hero of host Alexei, he hailed her latest film, HARVEST, as one of the very best of 2025. HARVEST is a medieval tale of modernity swallowing up tradition, it stars Caleb Landry Jones and is shot by the now legendary Sean Price Williams. There's no greater honor to have Athina Rachel Tsangari join us in The Last Video Store while she was serving on the Melbourne International Film Festival's jury.
