It's bath time! The much-maligned, much-anticipated, larger-than-life bath is finally here!!! This is a chapter of water and sass, as the Sea Folk and Andoran nobles alike get a taste of what Queen Elayne Aes Sedai is going to be like. Our Winter's Heart sections are some of the juiciest writing we've had in a while, as a lovely treat between chapters. We also discuss the connection between hot water, magic, and civilization, debate if shoes are evil, wonder about salt water baths, and realize that this podcast is sponsored by inherited wealth. The closer we inch towards January 20 and the end of Trump's reign of terror, the more unhinged the orange man becomes. I'll have the latest news on his scorched earth tactics. Congress is still paralyzed, and the government will officially shut down tonight if they can't come to a funding deal before midnight. We're all hoping for better things with a Biden presidency, but we progressives can't get complacent. We must push him to recognize the progressive wing of the party. To that end, Roots Action has launched NoHoneymoon.org to push progressive priorities. He wrote "Bernie Sanders and Our Winter of Progressive Discontent" at Common Dreams to explain our position.

This is the strongest Sydney market we have recorded in the five years we have been conducting our quarterly sales surveys. Greater Sydney has 67 suburbs with rising buyer demand, compared with 18 six months ago. Our Winter 2019 survey pinpointed the bottom of the Sydney trough and this Autumn 2020 survey provides strong evidence of the market revival, showing just how much has changed since the middle of 2019. The number of suburbs classified as declining markets has dropped from 66 suburbs six months ago to 12. The suburbs with growing sales activity are spread across 22 municipalities in the Greater Sydney area, but it is clear that the greatest uplift is being felt at the upper end of the market and that the revival is not evenly distributed. The leading LGAs in terms of the number of growth suburbs are the Northern Beaches, Sydney City and Inner West municipalities. An exception is the Blacktown LGA, which is showing healthy signs of revival. But other outer-ring regions – such as Penrith, Liverpool, Camden and Campbelltown – have only small numbers of growth markets, with sales levels generally remaining at moderate levels. And there are still several locations which we continue to classify as "danger" markets. So the Sydney story heading into 2020 is one of recovery - but buyers need to be aware that this recovery is not universal across all areas and do their research. Our Winter podcasts continue, with or without the snow. This week, we fill our Winter topics up first with the long history of snowmen. We then address the recent viewpoint of some that snowflakes aren't unique (spoiler alert: they are very unique). And finally, appropriate for our winter months, which are dark and cold, we look at the Danish hygge lifestyle. Hygge (pronounced hue-guh, not hoo-gah) is a Danish word used when acknowledging a feeling or moment, whether alone or with friends, at home or out, ordinary or extraordinary as cozy, charming or special. The undefinable feeling of hygge is a way to find moments to celebrate, acknowledge and break up the mundane or harsh. By creating simple rituals without effort {such as brewing real tea with a little china cup every evening, to stopping at the flower shop every week} the Danes see both the domestic and personal life as an art form and not a drudgery to get away from. We then apply hygge to our US lifestyles. Join us, won't you, for this fun and informative, ad-free, and free-in-general, HolidayMoons podcast! [School of Movies 2020] Our Winter commissions season begins with this cult classic fantasy from 1988. Largely dismissed at the box office, Willow found a home market of kids who grew up wearing out their VHS copies, and will still talk of it today with misty-eyed affection. This was one of those movies that kept me going between the hibernation of Star Wars and the emergence of Lord of the Rings. While this is easily passed off as a Hobbit lite or an attempt to siphon Star Wars’ space fantasy into conventional fantasy, what we talk about here are some arresting hidden depths, and how charmingly it manages to pull off its magic trick. Our Winter 2018 cover story, “The Investment Gap that Threatens the Planet,” takes a detailed look at investments in discovering and developing new solutions to address climate change. It finds that such investments are woefully low and have even been falling in recent years. The article concludes that philanthropists are particularly well-suited to bridging this investment gap in the market. On this related podcast, David Johnson (@contrarianp), senior editor of Stanford Social Innovation Review, interviews Sarah Kearney (@swoodkearney) and Scott Burger (@burgersb), who co-authored the article along with Fiona Murray and Liqian Ma. Kearney is the founder and executive director of PRIME Coalition, a public charity that empowers philanthropists to inject charitable capital into market-based solutions to climate change. Burger is a doctoral candidate in the Institute for Data, Systems, and Society at MIT and the technology investment advisor to the PRIME Coalition.                   They discuss why we need to continue developing new solutions to climate change in addition to harnessing existing solutions, why agriculture—one of the largest sources of greenhouse gas emissions—gets so little investment compared to other sectors, and why the venture capital industry in the United States is not in the business of solving social problems. “Most [venture capital] funds are in a race to go first for the next Instagram,” Kearney says, “but no one wants to go first for the grid capacity energy storage company or industrial waste heat-to-electricity conversion company that might take longer and cost more and have uncertain exit options than the 10-year venture fund structure can afford.” Additional resources: The Investment Gap that Threatens the Planet A New Vision for Funding Science 10 SSIR Articles on Climate Change Solutions @swoodkearney @burgersb https://ssir.org/podcasts/entry/bridging_the_climate_change_investment_gap
