In this episode, Wendy speaks with social psychologist and contemplative researcher Paul Condon. Paul's work integrates psychological theory with the Buddhist contemplative tradition, looking at meditation through the lens of attachment theory. This conversation covers many topics, including: his long interest in the intersection between Buddhism and psychology; measuring compassion in the real world; meditation's effects on prosocial behavior and relating to suffering; barriers to compassion; the relevance of vulnerability and safety to compassion; understanding secure and insecure attachment; shifting our attachment style: how contemplative practice can help develop our secure base; security as adaptability; limitations of viewing meditation as self-help and individual effort; the relational starting point of meditation; open vs. closed secular contexts; identifying a caring moment or benefactor; the power of mental simulation; changes he's noticed from practice; and what these practices can offer in our current moment as a society. We all value kindness. But showing it isn't always easy. Buddhists recognized this problem long ago and developed what may be the world's first and best tool for cultivating compassion: meditation. While most people in the West see meditation as a technique to reduce stress and anxiety, that's only part of the story. Join Dave and his guests Buddhist Lama Trungram Gyalwa Rinpoche, meditation teacher Sharon Salzberg, and psychologist Paul Condon to learn more about how and why meditation is a key to kindness.

Doctor Who: the World Enough and Time podcast

Episode 14 sees Andy and Alex together again in NZ and takes us all the way back to 1963-64 and the groundbreaking debut of Doctor Who's deadliest foes: the Daleks! They recall what it was like seeing the story for the first time in 1990 and how it compares almost 30 years later. As ever they explore crucial aspects of the plot, such as: Where are all the farmer Daleks?; Why do neutron bombs take 23 days to deploy?; And what exactly are anti-radiation gloves? They also decide that the story should be known as The Dead Planet, worry about the morals of the Doctor and Barbara, and are most impressed that Ganatus pre-empts the ending of Warriors of the Deep some 20 years early. Elsewhere they welcome the Cailleach as she prompts them to consider previous Hall of Fame votes, and Alex challenges Andy to a tough backwards quiz. All this, the glorious Tom Petty theme tune to the Amazon original drama The Romanoffs anthology series, and very little diddling about. With shout-outs to Pip Madeley and Elton Townend Jones. This episode is dedicated to Doctor Who fan and lovely human being Paul Condon. Thank you lovely listeners.

This is a special edition of Reality Bomb remembering a special person: Paul Condon, who died late last week. Paul was brilliant, funny, thoughtful, mischievous and kind. He was a much-loved Doctor Who fan and we're paying tribute to him by presenting two interviews he did: the first (from episode 048) was recorded the day after Jodie Whittaker was cast as Paul explained who Jodie Whittaker was and what to watch of her work. The second is a Gallery of the Underrated from episode 047 as Paul explains why he thinks Delta and the Bannermen should get more love -- and offers a mind-blowing interpretation of what actually happened in that story. Paul Condon was the best of Doctor Who fandom. And he will be missed.
