Today's podcast covers what went on in Corrie between the 14th and the 18th October 2024 (Episodes #11,387 - 11,392) It's another extra-long show this week, but not because of another lengthy Michael rant about the scheduling - nope, this time it's because we've got a murder mystery on our hands (and unlike the Lauren one back in the Spring, this time somebody's actually been murdered!). Yep, Joel turned up dead in a sack on Monday's visit to Weatherfield, and there are plenty of characters with the motive and the opportunity to have done him in. Did Mason do it as payback for Joel's treatment of Betsy? Did God-fearing Dee-Dee go Old Testament on his arse? Or maybe it's just what at this point seems to be the most obvious suspect, DC Kit Green. There are still plenty of clues still to be revealed in flashbacks, but we try to piece together all the evidence so far. Joel's not the only character we had to wave bye-bye to this week either, as Stu hangs up his whites and heads of for a new life in Germany - and not even Yasmeen seems that bothered by it! We've also got more drama at the Platts (with no sign of Gail!), a trip to A&E for Sam, and yet another 'the Winter-Browns are poor' story. It wasn't all gold, but on the whole, we thought it was a pretty decent week! Up next on the podcast, we take a look at why Shelley King and Julie Hesmondhalgh are teaming up for a good cause, and finish off the show with some of your thoughts on the early ITVX uploads in The Kabin. SANDY McGREGOR on MR BATES VS THE POST OFFICE First broadcast on FAB RADIO INTERNATIONAL at 19:00 on January 28th 2024 We don't often deal with all that much outrage in the generally cosy world of VISION ON SOUND, where often the most controversial opinion I make is about whether a fifty year old television series is still acceptable for modern viewing, how certain shows came to be wiped, or disagreeing with my guests as to whether certain TV shows can be considered to be absolute rubbish or not, or whether we should, perhaps, only award that dubious accolade to anything produced in the last ten years or so. Equally, we don't often consider much in the way of modern or recent television to come under what we loosely call our watching brief. And yet, because a certain recent ITV television drama has been causing a lot of discussion, and indeed outrage, I felt that we couldn't really ignore it for twenty years in the hope that it might become worthy of our attention. So, having already borrowed - and devoured - his copy of the book THE GREAT POST OFFICE SCANDAL by NICK WALLIS, I invited SANDY McGREGOR back onto the show to have a chat about the implications of the recently broadcast powerful four-part drama series MR BATES VERSUS THE POST OFFICE, the story of what has been called one of the biggest miscarriages of justice in British History, written by GWYNETH HUGHES and directed by JAMES STRONG, which starred TOBY JONES alongside MONICA DOLAN and JULIE HESMONDHALGH as some of the “little people” doggedly and determinedly pursuing justice by taking on the POST OFFICE in a two decade battle to clear the names of over five hundred of his fellow sub-postmasters in a story which, finally, largely because of the broadcast of this production, has rightly been front and centre in the news agenda. And whilst neither of us can claim any insights or personal involvement with the story, other than having taken a keen interest in it, and reading rather a lot about it, as well as discussing the series itself, our discussion does try to consider the power of television to occasionally make great positive changes happen, so we do briefly consider some of the – surprisingly few - other TV shows that can claim to have actually changed lives, and wonder just why it is that an important news story such as this somehow failed to make the same kind of impact in documentary form as it managed to as a drama series, and whether in future, that might be the only way any of us are likely to get the rest of the population to take much interest in some of the important things that are happening but which remain largely ignored. PLEASE NOTE - For Copyright reasons, musical content sometimes has to be removed for the podcast edition. All the spoken word content remains (mostly) as it was in the broadcast version. Hopefully this won't spoil your enjoyment of the show.

This week, Jacki and Lyle discuss a subject that has gripped the nation as a result of a truly extraordinary drama series which aired on ITV earlier this month - Mr Bates vs The Post Office. Starring Toby Jones, Monica Dolan and Julie Hesmondhalgh among other, this exceptional dramatisation of the Horizon IT scandal, otherwise known as the British Post Office scandal, depicts one of the biggest miscarriages of justice ever witness in the United Kingdom. Hundreds of sub-postmasters were wrongly prosecuted for theft, false accounting or fraud as a result of the flawed Horizon accounting system, created by IT juggernaut Fujitsu. Incidentally, as is discussed in this episode of the podcast, this system is still in use today. Jacki and Lyle analyse the impact the ITV drama has had on the ongoing campaign for justice for the victims of this scandal, led by the inspirational Alan Bates. Jacki asks how it was only when this drama was broadcast that the government started to take notice, and why the Post Office didn't act when the crisis was first discovered. Lyle then discusses the involvement of Paula Vennells, former Post Office CEO who has recently handed back her CBE after a petition for her to do so garnered over a million signatures, and current Liberal Democrat leader Ed Davey, who was Minister for Postal Affairs in the coalition government and refused to meet with Alan Bates in 2010. Jacki and Lyle finish by discussing the lack of leadership within the Post Office and the effectiveness of the response to the outpouring of support from the British public in light of the excellent ITV drama.Head over to ITVx to watch the brilliant Mr Bates vs The Post Office: https://www.itv.com/watch/mr-bates-vs-the-post-office/10a0469/10a0469a0001Artwork by DimosoMusic by Lyle FultonGet in touch via lyle@dimoso.com or info@dimoso.comMore information at www.dimoso.com and www.therestispr.comFollow us on Twitter - @TheRestIsPR Hosted on Acast. On our latest podcast, we talk about the episodes of Corrie shown in the UK between the 30th November and the 1st December (Episodes #11121 - 11126). Before we get onto that, though, we chat for a while about our trip to London last weekend, when we attended a live Q&A and book signing with Corrie legend Julie Hesmondhalgh! Not only did we have a chance to talk with her and her husband, Corrie writer Ian Kershaw, but we also got to chat with her mate Connie Hyde, who played Gina Seddon between 2017 and 2019 - who as you might remember was a bit of a favourite character of ours back then! Up next is the Street Talk segment, where we have a natter about what went on in Weatherfield in the past week. Christmas came early to No. 5 on Friday, ahead of Bernie's imminent sentencing - and trust Chesney to come and pour cold water over the festivities by bringing round a woman from child protection to investigate Joseph's mysterious bouts of sickness! Also this week, we're introduced to Ed and Ronnie's dad Sarge, who seems like a fun character - though of course you can't be part of the Bailey clan at the moment without immediately hitting secretly broke Ed up for some cash and making his gambling problems spiral even further! Elsewhere on the cobbles, Lauren and Sabrina make amends, Asha continues to be ignorant of Nina's problem with her Isla obsession and opportunity comes knocking on Ryan's door. There's a very, very truncated feedback section at the end of the podcast this week (sorry - tired!) but before that, we take a look at the latest Corrie news in The Kabin, including catching up with how Ellie's getting on in Strictly - could we have the show's first winner from Weatherfield in a few weeks? We've got a real treat for fans of Classic Corrie on ITV3 this week in our bonus podcast. Like many of us, actress Georgia Taylor has been wallowing in nostalgia with some of the episodes from the late 90s recently, so we thought it would be fun to have a chat with her about what it's been like revisiting some of the Battersbys' early days from January 1998. Georgia tells us how it's been, seeing those scenes on the Red Rec for the first time in over 20 years, reflects on her time working alongside Corrie greats like Liz Dawn, Julie Hesmondhalgh and Roy Barraclough, and shares which storylines from that era have gripped her the most second time around.

Welcome to Over the Rainbow, an LGBTQ+ podcast dedicated to queer education and queer representation. Hosted by Rachel Keighley (she/her).   Episode 11: Trans representation on TV with Julie Hesmondhalgh (she/her) and Annie Wallace (she/her): In this episode Julie and Annie Wallace talk about trans representation on TV. Julie was the first person to play a trans character on a British soap and shares her story playing Hayley Cropper on Coronation Street. Annie is the first trans person to play a trans character on a British Soap and currently plays Sally St. Claire on Hollyoaks. They share their stories and really delve into the progress we have made over the last 20 years or so, in terms of trans representation and trans visibility both in the media and wider society. We talk about the shift we see in authentic representation and the amazing opportunities for trans people to tell their stories through the medium of art. However, this journey is far from over, so we also talk about where this representation needs to go in the future, and the parts Julie and Annie play in that journey through their characters and real life activism.   Information, support and resources: Press for Change: http://www.pfc.org.uk Trans Media Watch: http://transmediawatch.org Mermaids UK: https://mermaidsuk.org.uk Sparkle: https://www.sparkle.org.uk Trans Creative: https://transcreative.uk   People you should follow: Annie Wallace: https://twitter.com/anniewallace Julie Hesmondhalgh: https://twitter.com/juliehes Charlie Martin: https://www.instagram.com/gocharliem/ Munroe Bergdorf: https://www.instagram.com/munroebergdorf/ Travis Alabanza: https://www.instagram.com/travisalabanza/ Tyler Luke Cunningham: https://www.instagram.com/tylerlukecunningham/   More information on this podcast: Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/_overtherainbowpodcast/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/overtherainbowpodcast13   Music: Find Your Way Beat by Nana Kwabena

In this episode, Jeannette speaks to Maggie Watts, who is fighting to raise awareness of pancreatic cancer and get more funding for research and treatment. She has done so with great success. To the point where people like the actress Julie Hesmondhalgh, who played Hayley Cropper in Coronation Street, Joey Barton the footballer, the DJ Stephanie Hirst and Lorraine Kelly joined her campaign. Today, thanks to her efforts and those of other campaigners this cancer attracts more funding, but there is still a lot to be done.   Maggie explains how her husband and family embraced the time he had left and shares some of the many lessons she learned then. Lessons and skills that stayed with her and have continued to drive her forwards. Maggie and Jeannette also talk about how to tackle difficult conversations, how having a clear purpose, a positive mindset and never giving up means you can achieve incredible things in life.   KEY TAKEAWAYS There is still not enough awareness of pancreatic cancer and research into the disease is woefully underfunded. The survival rates for pancreatic cancer are low, partly because of delays in diagnosis. GPs frequently miss pancreatic cancer, so you need to be aware of the symptoms (** see our list of symptoms below) You may have to actively ask your doctor to consider pancreatic cancer as a potential cause of your symptoms. There is a tendency for doctors not to look at your symptoms in totality to treat each one individually – don´t be afraid to remind your doctors of your full list of symptoms. Being able to challenge in a respectful yet effective way is an important skill. The medical team are the experts, but it should never stop you from doing your own research and discussing what you have found with them. Don´t be afraid to challenge if something doesn´t feel right. There are mechanisms available that you can use to force change using the political system. Twitter is a good way to gain momentum for a campaign and find influencers and celebrities who will get on board. Ideally, you need someone who has a high profile to get involved to keep the momentum going. Tenacity, a positive mindset, and pulling together as a team really does enable you to beat the odds and get the exposure your cause needs. You only fail when you stop. Keep yourself in good shape, if you don´t you will burn out and have to stop your campaign. You need to embrace life, none of us know how long we´ve got on this earth. Hope is contagious, it drives people on to find solutions and ways of coping even in seemingly impossible situations. Pancreatic cancer used to only get 1% of funding. Now, thanks to Maggie and her fellow campaigners it gets 3%.   BEST MOMENTS ‘Change doesn´t happen unless people have a voice’ ‘Whatever life throws at me now, mostly it’s sortable or doable´ ´If you've got something, whatever it is that you want to achieve, figure it out as you go along and don't let people cast any doubt in your mind´   VALUABLE RESOURCES Brave, Bold, Brilliant podcast series   ABOUT THE GUEST   Maggie Watts is a Pancreatic Cancer Advocate, campaigning for more awareness and more funding of Pancreatic Cancer.   For the last 10 years Maggie has campaigned for more awareness and more funding for pancreatic cancer as a result of losing her husband, Kevin  to the disease and discovering that survival rates hadn't improved at all in the 40 years prior to his death. Kev's mum had also died of pancreatic cancer exactly 40 years earlier (aged 27) and nothing had changed whatsoever in all of that time.   This was a shock to Maggie and also unbelievable and unacceptable that nothing had changed in all of that time - after Kev died it became a mission of hers (and also a coping mechanism for grief) to see what she could do to raise awareness.  Maggie started a Government e-petition and took to social media to try and find 100,000 people to sign - to try and become eligible for a Parliamentary Debate.     With the support of many around her, including some high profile media and sports personalities such as the actress Julie Hesmondhalgh, the BBC radio presenter Stephanie Hirst and footballer Joey Barton, Maggie was successful in achieving her goal and went to Parliament for the debate which was one of the most highly attended backbench debates ever.   Maggie continues to tirelessly champion the cause for Pancreatic Cancer, through her Hope is Contagious Campaign, to make this world a better place and provide hope for Pancreatic Cancer sufferers and their families.   GUEST RESOURCES Hope Is Contagious – Maggie´s pancreatic cancer awareness website PancreaticCancer.org.uk PancreaticCancerAction.org Pancreatic Cancer Research Fund – pcrf.org.uk PancreaticCancerAction Scotland   ABOUT THE HOST   Jeannette Linfoot is a highly regarded senior executive, property investor, board advisor, and business mentor with over 25 years of global professional business experience across the travel, leisure, hospitality, and property sectors. From the boardroom tables of ‘big’ international business to the dining room tables of entrepreneurial start-ups, how to overcome challenges, embrace opportunities and take risks, whilst staying ‘true’ to yourself is the order of the day. ** Spotting the Early Signs of Pancreatic Cancer and Helping to Raise Awareness   9,000 people die every year with pancreatic cancer, in the UK. Early diagnosis is essential and greatly improves survival time.   The main symptoms of pancreatic cancer are:   Indigestion that does not respond to normal medications Pale and/or smelly/oily stools that do not flush easily Upper abdominal pain Mid back pain – in both sexes, at about the point a lady´s bra strap would sit Fatigue Unexplained weight loss Pain on eating Diabetes that is not associated with weight gain Jaundice   You may have just one, or several of these symptoms.   Early diagnosis greatly improves survival times. So, go to the doctors early and don´t be afraid to politely challenge doctors and ask for a scan if symptoms persist.   If your symptoms persist actively, ask your doctor about whether it could be pancreatic cancer. This cancer is often missed or misdiagnosed, so asking your doctor the question helps to prompt them to explore things more.   Please keep an eye out for the signs in yourself and your loved ones.   Also, please support Pancreatic Cancer month, which is November and World Pancreatic Cancer day, which is the 19th November.   Sharing the Hope Is Contagious  website and any pancreatic cancer tweets and posts on social media takes moments, yet it helps a lot.                   See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

We've reached the end of June, which means we're already halfway through Corrie's 60th year, and as is our annual tradition, our bonus content for this week is a reflection on last six months in Weatherfield. Well, we say say that, but it's actually more like four and a bit months in Weatherfield and six for us, as the global pandemic we've faced has meant that, like the rest of the world, Corrie's had to make a fair few changes to its 2020 plans. We start off by sharing our thoughts on how well the show has responded to life in lockdown, before chatting about some of our highlights and lowlights of six months on the Street. From the hard-hitting drama of the Geoff and Yasmeen coercive control story to the renaissance of the the Alahans and the cosy nostalgia of the 10,000th episode, there's been a lot to like so far in 2020, and we're cautiously optimistic about the direction things are heading for the anniversary celebrations in December. We round off the discussion with a chat about some of the podcast highlights of 2020, including our interviews with Julie Hesmondhalgh and Kevin Kennedy, the chance to take part in a Zoom quiz with the cast, and an increased focus on vintage Corrie thanks to us finally getting around to getting our hands on some 60s and 70s episodes.

A few months ago, writing an email to a colleague that starts 'I hope you are safe in these extraordinary times' would have been an unusual thing to do, but it very quickly became 'the new normal'. January is a month of resolutions and fresh starts, of gyms and diets. This week Ian McMillan and guests tackle the language of Wellbeing and Self-Care. Poets are not generally known for their physical prowess, but in George Szirtes new collection 'Thirty Poets Go To The Gym' (Candlestick). What happens when famous poets from Lord Byron to John Berryman and from Emily Dickinson to Elizabeth Bishop try to get into shape? What are the strongest influences on the ways we chose to live our lives? Does taking care of someone meaning letting them take care of themselves? These issues are at the heart of Kendall Feaver's new play 'The Almighty Sometimes', starring Julie Hesmondhalgh. Julie discusses her role with Ian, and also examines what wellbeing means to an actor. The poet Melissa Lee-Houghton won the Somerset Maugham Award for her debut collection 'Sunshine' (Penned in the Margins), an intensely personal collection dealing with her experience of abuse, addiction and mental health issues. Melissa discusses how she protects herself when publishing such personal work. Producer: Cecile Wright Presenter: Ian McMillan.

After the very British flavours of the Cornetto Trilogy: Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz and The World's End, director Edgar Wright has made a very American heist movie. Baby Driver tells the story of a young getaway driver who listens to music constantly to sound track his great escapes and combat tinnitus. The cast includes Kevin Spacey, Jon Hamm, Lily James and Jamie Foxx, but as Kirsty Lang found out, music is the big star. She spoke to the director about car chases, Star Wars and of course killer tracks. In the first of a new Front Row series, Hooked, in which actors, singers and writers discuss their current cultural obsessions, actor Julie Hesmondhalgh reveals her love for Manchester, poet Tony Walsh, and Oasis.Earlier this month the artist Sam Durant gave the rights to his controversial artwork, Scaffold, to the Dakota community in Minneapolis. The artwork had been bought by the Walker Art Centre in Minneapolis but after its installation in their sculpture garden there were protests from the local Native American community who said the work trivialised the hanging of 38 Dakota men by the US Army in 1862 - the largest mass execution in US history. Spotlight starring Mark Ruffalo, Michael Keaton and Rachel McAdams and directed by Tom McCarthy tells the true story of the Boston Globe's Pulitzer Prize winning "Spotlight" team of investigative journalists, who in 2002 shocked the world by exposing the Catholic Church's systematic cover-up of widespread paedophilia perpetrated by more than 70 local priests. It has six Oscar nominations, including for Best Picture, Best Director and Best Original Screenplay. Booker prize winning novelist Howard Jacobson's new novel, My Name is Shylock, is a retelling of Shakespeare's Merchant of Venice - part of a series of Shakespeare-inspired novels by well known writers to mark the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare's death. Jacobson challenges the traditional anti-Semitic interpretations of Shakespeare's most performed play. Academy Award winning director of The Great Beauty Paolo Sorrentino's new film Youth stars Harvey Keitel and Michael Caine, and is set in an elegant hotel in the Swiss Alps. Fred, a composer and conductor, is now retired. Mick, a film director, is still working. They look with curiosity and tenderness on their children's confused lives, Mick's enthusiastic young writers, and the other hotel guests, all of whom, it seems, have all the time that they lack. Wit is a Pulitzer Prize winning play by American playwright Margaret Edson which opens at Manchester's Royal Exchange with former Coronation Street star Julie Hesmondhalgh. It portrays the final hours of Dr Vivian Bearing, a renowned expert on the work of 17th-century poet John Donne, and who is in hospital dying of ovarian cancer. Edson's first, and only, play, it was inspired by her experience of working on a cancer ward. And Electronic Superhighway, a landmark exhibition at the Whitechapel Gallery in London that brings together over 100 artworks to show the impact of computer and internet technologies on artists from the mid-1960s to the present day.
