Send us Fan MailFinancial Advisor Tim Russell, CFP®, Rev. Drew Gysi, and Tyler Rutherford explore how our deep-rooted value of independence can subtly shape, and sometimes distort, our faith, especially when it comes to money and self-sufficiency. While financial independence can be a wise and biblical pursuit, we discuss how it can quickly become an idol when it fuels pride, fear, or isolation. Ultimately, we point to a better model: not independence, but faithful, God-centered living within a community marked by humility, generosity, and responsible interdependence.See the show notes here!Subscribe to "Life in the Markets" PodcastBuy our new book: The Good StewardWealth Management from a Biblical WorldviewStewardship Seminars from a Biblical WorldviewLearn more at: StewardologyPodcast.comSchedule a Personal Stewardship Review at: StewardologyPodcast.com/ReviewGet in touch with us at: Contact@StewardologyPodcast.comor call us at: (800) 688-5800Send us episode ideas! A new paper from RAND-affiliated complexity researcher Kyle A. Kilian and Future of Life Institute risk analyst Richard Mallah, published May 20 through the Center for AI Risk Management and Alignment (CARMA), gives executives something that has been missing from enterprise AI governance until now: a six-test diagnostic for evaluating whether the AI committee you stood up actually governs, or whether it just looks like it does. The paper's load-bearing concept is performative adaptivity. Governance that meets monthly, ratifies charters, and updates risk registers without the structural properties to detect a new AI risk in time to respond. The authors argue this failure mode is more dangerous than no oversight at all, because it consumes the organizational energy that would otherwise build real protective capacity. In this episode, Harrison walks through:Who CARMA is and why the RAND + Future of Life Institute pedigree mattersThe four continuous governance functions every AI committee needs (Sensing, Evaluation, Response, Learning)All six diagnostic tests (Independence, Transparency, Durability, Accountability, Authority, Scope Adequacy)Where The 7 Levels of AI Proficiency comes in, because structurally sound governance fails when the operators are under-proficientThree things to do with this paper this weekFull article with citations: launchready.ai/insights/ai-governance/performative-ai-governance-six-tests-carma-2026Take the free 7 Levels of AI Proficiency assessment at assess.launchready.aiThank you for tuning in!Harrison PainterExecutive AI ConsultantSetting the Standard for AI Readiness

Why Superintelligence Won't Cure Cancer

Your Undivided Attention

One of the most common arguments you hear from company executives racing to develop super-intelligent AI is that it will cure cancer. It's an incredibly powerful and seductive promise.  If superintelligent AI really can cure cancer, then anyone who stands in the way of it, anyone who wants to slow it down — even because of its serious risks — is essentially letting people die. In fact, the biggest risk would be going too slowly. But what if a superintelligent AI isn't actually capable of solving cancer in the way it's been described? What if we're being sold a false promise to justify a dangerous race? That's exactly what our guest this week argues is happening. Dr. Emilia Javorsky is a physician, public health researcher, and director of the Futures Program at the Future of Life Institute. She's worked across scientific research, clinical trials, tech startups, and AI policy.   Emilia recently wrote a paper titled “How AI Can and Can't Cure Cancer,” in which she argues that the promise of superintelligence curing cancer falls apart under scrutiny.  Emilia lost a parent to cancer, so her criticism of this promise comes from a place of real concern, not cynicism. It also comes from her belief that AI can be really revolutionary for medicine, if we build it the right way. Your Undivided Attention is produced by the Center for Humane Technology. However, this paper does not include any methodology for arriving at this claim. Emilia stated that we have yet to cure any complex, chronic disease in humans. However, we have been able to cure Hepatitis C, which is considered a complex infectious disease, and we have managed to effectively cure some types of Leukemia Correction: Tristan incorrectly paraphrased a quote from Charlie Munger about incentives. The actual quote is “The basic rule of incentives is you get what you were owed for. So if you have a dumb incentive system, you get dumb outcomes."     Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. It's Wednesday, April 15th, A.D. 2026. This is The Worldview in 5 Minutes heard on 140 radio stations and at www.TheWorldview.com.  I'm Adam McManus. (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Jonathan Clark British street preacher criminally investigated for Gospel proclamation A pastor in Britain has suffered months of criminal investigation for street preaching. Police arrested Pastor Dia Moodley for his Christian speech in Broadmead, Bristol last November. He faced arrest previously in 2024 for simply commenting on Islam and transgender ideology.  Pastor Moodley is considering legal action against the police with the help of Alliance Defending Freedom International. He said, “I merely preached the Gospel to all people out of love for God and my neighbor. For the police to suggest I cannot do this in areas where Muslims are present sets a very dangerous precedent for free speech.” Two European courts ruled against abortion mill buffer zones European countries have tried to ban pro-lifers from helping pregnant women entering abortion mills. However, Evangelical Focus reports two courts in Europe have now ruled against such so-called “buffer zones.” A court in Germany ruled that pro-lifers did not break the law by displaying religious images near an abortion mill. Similarly, a court in Vienna, Austria ruled that peaceful prayer near abortion mills cannot be banned.  Besides these “buffer zone” laws, pro-lifers in Europe have also faced violent attacks in recent years for their peaceful demonstrations.  Court awards arrested pro-life activist $1 million In the United States, a Christian pro-life activist secured a one million dollar settlement against the Department of Justice last week. Back in 2022, federal agents raided the house of Mark Houck, a volunteer with 40 Days for Life. Authorities arrested him at gunpoint in front of his family. This happened after he protected his young son from an angry abortion escort.  With the help of 40 Days for Life Institute of Law & Justice, Mark challenged the actions taken by the DOJ under the Biden administration.  Listen to comments from Shawn Carney, CEO of 40 Days for Life. CARNEY: “Be not afraid. Go out. Peacefully pray to end abortion. This is a huge victory for free speech. It's a huge victory for all Americans who want our right to speak our minds peacefully in a law abiding way, without fear of our own government.” The early church prayed in Acts 4:29, “Now, Lord, look on their threats, and grant to Your servants that with all boldness they may speak Your word.” Alabama public school students allowed religious education Alabama recently authorized public school students to receive religious instruction during school hours.  Republican Governor Kay Ivey signed the Alabama Released Time Credit Act into law last Wednesday.  Alliance Defending Freedom commented, “Parents have the right and responsibility to guide the upbringing and education of their children. … [The law] respects parents' educational decisions, allowing public school children to be briefly excused from school to receive free, off-campus religious instruction taught by private charitable organizations.” 2 million new Americans engaged with Bible The American Bible Society released the first chapter of its 16th annual State of the Bible report last week. The report documented the rise of people who are curious about the Bible, known as the “Movable Middle.” They now account for 28 percent of the population, an increase of nine million people since 2024.  This segment of the population appears to have primarily come from those who were formerly disengaged with Scripture. And the disengaged have shrunk by five million adults over the last two years.  Christian astronaut glorifies God upon Artemis II re-entry Artemis II splashed down in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of California last Friday. The four NASA astronauts on board completed a 10-day mission, flying around the moon and back to earth. Forty-nine-year-old Victor Glover was one of the astronauts on board. He gave glory to God after the successful mission.  Listen. GLOVER: “When this started on April 3rd, I wanted to thank God in public, and I want to thank God again. Because even bigger than my challenge of trying to describe what we went through -- the gratitude of seeing what we saw, doing what we did, and being with who I was with -- it's too big to just be in just one body.” Psalm 19:1 says, “The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament shows His handiwork.” Adam McManus: “A Great Awakening is one of the best films I've seen in 10 years!” And finally, on a personal note, I just came from having seen the Christian film A Great Awakening which documents the unique relationship between Benjamin Franklin, a deist, and English preacher George Whitefield. I was deeply moved by the film, and cried at a number of places. If you've not yet seen it, get your tickets today, because it's only in the movie theaters, across the nation, through tomorrow, Thursday, April 16. The Practice of Equanimity: Cultivating a Heart Big Enough to Hold Everything

Ep. 229 (Part 2 of 2) | In part 2 of our What is Real Greatness Series podcast with Margaret Cullen, author of Quiet Strength, Margaret continues to enlighten us about equanimity: its power, its wisdom, and its practice. She relates some of the history of equanimity—first considered a supreme virtue in Stoicism, then passed on to Sufism and Judaism—and explains that throughout time, equanimity (and humility) have always been an integral part of people who have made a true difference in the world. Margaret talks about how humor can break the spell of our trance (“when we lose equanimity, we get caught in a trance, believing in something that has us prisoner—humor breaks the spell”), and, in the spirit of “The Serenity Prayer” (“Grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, courage to change the things I can, and wisdom to know the difference”), she encourages us to make peace with what we can realistically do and let the rest go.While Part 1 of this dialogue focuses on the power of equanimity in relation to the big picture and what is going on now politically, in Part 2 Margaret looks at practicing equanimity in personal relationships and in our individual lives. She marvels at Thoreau's equanimous approach to his own death, and shares that she has found forgiveness to be the most important equanimity tool in relationships. “We reclaim our wisdom when we say ‘I'm sorry,'” Margaret explains. Margaret's deep and nuanced understanding of the power and practice of equanimity is inspiring and illuminating, and bringing this virtue to our attention as a pragmatic tool we can use is also incredibly timely, leaving us with a sense of hope and empowerment. Send us Fan MailFeeling guilty about money is not automatically a bad thing. God gave us a conscience to alert us when we are living outside of His design. Guilt can be a grace if it leads us toward repentance, restoration, and wiser stewardship. However, we live in a fallen world. Sometimes we carry more shame than we should. Other times, we fail to feel guilt when we should. When it comes to financial decisions, emotions often run deep. For nearly five decades, our team has been counseling families through their finances since 1978. We understand that financial failure is rarely just about dollars and cents.See the show notes here!Subscribe to "Life in the Markets" PodcastBuy our new book: The Good StewardWealth Management from a Biblical WorldviewStewardship Seminars from a Biblical WorldviewLearn more at: StewardologyPodcast.comSchedule a Personal Stewardship Review at: StewardologyPodcast.com/ReviewGet in touch with us at: Contact@StewardologyPodcast.comor call us at: (800) 688-5800Send us episode ideas! Ep. 228 (Part 1 of 2) | In part 1 of our second What is Real Greatness Series podcast, Margaret Cullen, author of the newly published book Quiet Strength: Find Peace, Feel Alive, and Love Boundlessly Through the Power of Equanimity, explains there is far more power in the virtue of equanimity than we may have thought. Because equanimity is associated with non-reactivity, people often confuse it with a neutral sort of feeling, a dampener of emotions, when actually, equanimity allows us to expand our capacity to feel; it widens our tolerance and empowers us to be comfortable with change. “Equanimity is big enough to include our broken, despairing hearts,” Margaret says. “We can hold a vision of equanimity that is completely inclusive of the human experience.” Practicing equanimity allows us to deepen our love—for the world and for others—without becoming attached.Margaret shares practical ways we can access equanimity—ways we can achieve conceptual clarity or a “wedge of spaciousness” when a moment has been hijacked by out-of-control emotions; how we can learn to turn directly and fully to what is arising in the moment; and how we can unhook from reactivity by not taking things too personally. “How can we respond heroically to the times we live in?” co-host John Dupuy asks. Margaret shares what she has learned teaching military units and special forces to cultivate equanimity—equanimity can save lives—and describes a compassion cultivation training program that has been established for police officers in California. Takeaways from this discussion may have important, powerful, timely effects on your life—and all of our lives; as John put it, “Never before have we had such a need for the medicine Margaret brings us.” Recorded January 14, 2026.“How do we care about this world that is in so much trouble without feeling overwhelmed? Anthropic vs. the Pentagon: The High-Stakes Fight Over Military AI—and Autonomous Weapons

Global Dispatches -- World News That Matters

Earlier this week, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth held a high-stakes meeting with Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei and, according to several news reports, delivered an ultimatum: either Anthropic drops the safety guardrails built into its AI model, Claude, or it faces potentially punishing consequences—including invoking the Defense Production Act to effectively seize Claude, or banning Anthropic outright by declaring the company a "supply chain risk." At issue are Anthropic's terms of service for Claude, which prohibit the model from being used to develop or deploy lethal autonomous weapons systems—so-called "killer robots" that can identify and strike targets without meaningful human oversight. The Pentagon wants a free hand to potentially use Claude to develop these systems; Anthropic wants to prevent Claude from doing so. The outcome of this dispute is highly consequential—potentially even for the future of humanity. So-called swarms of drones and other military hardware could operate autonomously, coordinating among themselves to kill with impunity. The Pentagon worries that if it doesn't develop these systems, China might. Anthropic considers these systems an ethically abhorrent line it does not want to cross. Joining me to discuss the details of this clash between a leading AI company and the Pentagon is Anna Hehir, head of Military AI Governance at the Future of Life Institute. We kick off with a discussion of how AI systems are already integrated into the U.S. military, before turning to a longer conversation about the vast implications of whether Anthropic complies with the Pentagon's ultimatum. We also discuss how this incident illustrates the need for international agreements on lethal autonomous weapons systems, including a potential treaty now being hashed out at the United Nations.

Daniel begins by asking Ram Dass to help us understand why people aren't happier. Ram Dass discusses the suffering that arises from clinging to sense experiences, our strong attachment to our identities, and awakening to the realization that there is no absolute reality.Daniel asks, practically speaking, how a person can begin to change. Ram Dass explores how real change comes from within, not from external circumstances. We can embrace the delight of simplicity and learn how to quiet our minds.Ram Dass provides an example of the power of meditation. He and Daniel discuss entering the space behind thought and how the intellect is a terrific servant but a terrible master. Ultimately, it's better to be identified with our being, rather than our knowing or doing. The Ram Dass community gathers regularly to engage in meaningful discussions about the podcast. We really don't understand that in that simplicity lies a space in which one can plumb one's own depths of being and appreciate that who you are is an entity that has taken birth, that is passing through a series of experiences, all of which are useful in order to awaken to one's deeper self.” – Ram DassSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Margaret has spent more than four decades studying and teaching mindfulness, compassion, and emotional resilience. She is also a fellow of the Mind & Life Institute and an advisor to the Global Compassion Coalition. In this thoughtful conversation, we explore the often-misunderstood quality of equanimity — the capacity to meet life's joys and challenges without becoming overwhelmed, reactive, or emotionally shut down. We discuss: • What equanimity really is (and what it is not) • How equanimity works alongside mindfulness • Why suppressing emotions increases suffering • How emotions move through the body when we don't interfere with them • The role of “feeling tones” in emotional reactivity • Staying emotionally engaged without burnout • Practicing compassion while maintaining boundaries • Finding inner steadiness in an increasingly turbulent world The episode concludes with a gentle guided equanimity meditation, offering listeners a direct, experiential way to cultivate calm, clarity, and emotional balance.

Episode 88 The U.S. government is considering an executive order that could severely limit each state's ability to protect its residents, so Haley and Dani take a closer look at why this is a serious threat to safety – especially for kids. A.I. is developing at a rapid rate, and it's essential that we don't repeat the same mistakes we made when previous technological leaps were made. At the dawn of the internet, smart phones, and social media, protection for the most vulnerable was a low priority when compared to profit and innovation. We need to speak up now before lawmakers and Big Tech create another accountability shield like Section 230. *DONATE to NCOSE to join this movement: https://EndSexualExploitation.org/Donate  *Read the letter that over 20 organizations signed urging the President NOT to sign this executive order: https://ifstudies.org/blog/mr-president-its-time-to-put-kids-first-in-ai-policy  *A.I. Accidental Gods
Dance of the Spiritual Warrior: Balancing Love and Power with Jamie Bristow

Accidental Gods

What does it mean to (re)orient our entire culture around the power of love?  To answer this, we have to understand the nature of love and of power and how both of these have many meanings in our culture, some of them essential to moving forward - and some of them so toxic they turn the entire concept into a poisoned cue. This week's guest is friend of the podcast, Jamie Bristow. We spoke to him back in episode #274, recorded at the start of this year, and there, we consider what it was to be a Spiritual Warrior in our times - a concept to which Jamie has given the past 16 years of his life. Jamie is someone who lives and breathes at the intersection between spirituality - specifically Buddhism - and international policy in the realm of what is still called sustainability but which must, now, be shifting towards systemic change. For eight years, he was clerk to the UK's All Party Parliamentary Group on Mindfulness and director of the associated policy institute, the Mindfulness Initiative, where he helped to introduce mindfulness to a number of other parliaments around the world. In 2023, he joined the Inner Development Goals team to lead on public narrative and policy development, emphasising the inner skills and qualities needed for a sustainable transition. His work includes influential reports such as Reconnection: Meeting the Climate Crisis Inside Out and The System Within: Addressing the inner dimension of sustainability and systems transformation. He is an associate of Life Itself, The Climate Majority Project, Mind & Life Institute and Bangor University and now is working with Professor Rebecca Henderson on an initiative which is currently called the ReWeaving Project and it's in this area that we focussed our attention. There are many ways these conversations go. Often, I'm exploring a particular body of work and am asking questions to which, broadly, I have a sense of the answer - 'tell me about [x] that is squarely in your field'.  Sometimes, though, I'm talking with someone I know well enough, and where we share enough of a common grounding, that I can ask questions to which I don't know the answer. Where we can find the places where our Theories of Change meet but perhaps don't overlap, and explore the fertile, liminal spaces of uncertainty.  Jamie is one of these people and this was one of those conversations - where we explored love and power and game theory and how we get from where we are, through a nexus of power that is arrayed firmly around the Dark Triad of Narcissism, Psychopathy and Sadism (and I know that's slightly different to other Dark Triads that have Raw Cunning as the third one and sadism as an afterthought, but I think the cunning is in there with Psychopathy and the Sadism is, as we're seeing around the world, an essential part of the performative power-over that the wounded egos need to tell themselves they're safe). Anyway - we explored all the things that matter - and still only scratched the surface. So Jamie will definitely be coming back for another conversation, but in the meantime, here we are, delving deep into what it is to be human, and to be striving for emergence into a new, generative, kin-centric and flourishing system at this moment of total transformation. Faith on the Frontier of AI: A Conversation with Medlir Mema

Today, we're bringing you what we think is one of the most important conversations we could be having right now. We're talking with our friend and scholar Medlir Mema about artificial intelligence—and what it means for people of faith. Now whether you're already fascinated by AI, cautious, or ready to turn this episode off, this episode is for everyone. Medlir makes the case that AI is a human issue. A spiritual issue. And that it's urgent for people of faith to be asking how we can create an AI future that reflects the best of humanity.Medlir is the Head of the AI Governance Programme at the Global Governance Institute in Brussels, a Professor of International Relations at Brigham Young University Idaho, and is leading Organized Intelligence, a new initiative supported by the Future of Life Institute and Faith Matters. In this episode, he explains why he sees AI as an era-defining shift—less like the next tech milestone and more like the discovery of fire. It's a moment, he believes, that could fundamentally reshape how we live. We talk today about the ways AI is already changing jobs, relationships, trust, and even our sense of identity. And while Medlir is clear-eyed about the risks, this conversation is about clarity and opportunity. He believes that we have a real chance right now, to join the conversation with our deep values and even perhaps our theological frameworks, to ensure that AI actually helps us re-center on what truly matters and stay grounded in what it means to be human. We hope this episode is a call to pull up a seat to the table, and help shape what comes next.Learn more and follow Organized Intelligence at organizedintelligence.ai We're so excited to tell you about a new Faith Matters initiative called Organized Intelligence, supported by the Future of Life Institute. Our first gathering will take place November 4-5 in Salt Lake City, where you'll hear from scholars, creatives, technologists, and religious leaders. This gathering is for curious minds, and we would love to see you there! Go to organizedintelligence.ai to RSVP.

The Spiritual Practice of Speaking Up: A Conversation with Cynthia Winward & Susan M. Hinckley

Faith Matters

We sometimes reduce “faith-promoting” stories to those tidy endings—where miracles show up just in time, doubts vanish, and testimony replaces tension. But sometimes growth begins when the script falls apart. For Susan Meredith Hinckley and Cynthia Winward, these stories are nourishing a faith that looks like trust and transformation.  Susan and Cynthia are co-hosts of the At Last She Said It podcast and authors of a new book with the same title. They came to this work from different paths. For Cynthia, the Church just worked. She thrived—until her life took a turn at 40 and her certainty unraveled. For Susan, the discomfort was quieter. She says the Church always fit like an “itchy sweater”—a subtle, persistent misfit that kept her silent. But over time, what had become a “crisis of silence” became a call to speak up.For the past six years, Susan and Cynthia have been inviting women into conversations that began as honest exchanges between friends about big ideas and the real tensions of belonging to a church they both love and feel challenged by. What they've learned is that talking about hard things can be its own kind of faith practice—a way to bring your whole heart to your faith and your community, a way of being known. In this episode, they share practical wisdom for navigating Sundays when belief feels messy, offer a compass for making decisions when clarity is out of reach, and explore how using our voice can help transform hard things into a source connection with each other and a more intimate relationship with a God who loves us without conditions. We hope this conversation expands your imagination for what spiritual strength can look like—and invites you into a faith that's honest, evolving, and a true seedbed for growth. We're so excited to tell you about a new Faith Matters initiative called Organized Intelligence, supported by the Future of Life Institute. Our first gathering will take place November 4-5 in Salt Lake City, where you'll hear from scholars, creatives, technologists, and religious leaders. This gathering is for curious minds, and we would love to see you there!
