R.J. Stewart spent more than 20 years as a writer and producer in Hollywood. He got his first break writing for the NBC romantic-detective drama, Remington Steele that starred Pierce Brosnan and Stephanie Zimbalist.  He's best known for developing, writing and producing Xena: Warrior Princess (starring Lucy Lawless), once the highest-rated television show in syndication.  Among his other Hollywood credits are movies like The Rundown, starring Duane “The Rock” Johnson, Major League 2, starring Charlie Sheen, and the TV series Cleopatra 2525. He's also worked on projects with Kevin Costner, Rebecca De Mornay and James Garner.Recently, R.J. published the terrific post-apocalyptic thriller, Crazy Hawk, which I've read and can tell you is a fantastically action-packed dystopian western set in an inhospitable American future. I love to talk TV and I really enjoy every exchange with Susan and Sharon, otherwise known as the 80s TV Ladies. When their podcast, 80s TV Ladies, launched, they invited me to be a guest. It was a blast and over the last two years, the two podcasts have furthered a shared exploration of how women have been represented on television and the impact that representation has had on society as a whole and females, of all ages, in particular. Like Advanced TV Herstory, their show features interviews and analyzes the work of women both in front of and behind the camera. Our podcasts aim to help listeners understand how our culture shapes the television shows we watch and, in turn, how those shows shape our culture. Listen in on this engaging and informative look behind the scenes as we discuss the motivations, joys, and challenges of creating podcasts that highlight the contributions of women in television. 80s TV LADIES   Contacts Website – 80s TV Ladies - https://www.80stvladies.com/  Website – 134 West - https://134west.biz/  Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/80sTVLadies/ Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/80stvladies/ YouTube - https://www.youtube.com/@80stvladies  Patreon - https://www.patreon.com/80sTVLadies   Awards 2024 Women in Podcasting, Nominee in Entertainment – VOTE at https://womeninpodcasting.net/80s-tv-ladies/     2024 Webby Award – Best Indie Podcast   2023 People's Choice Podcast Awards - Best Art, Best TV & Film, Best Female Hosted    MENTIONS   Podcast Episodes 80s TV Ladies (24 May 2023) – Advanced TV Herstory w/ Cynthia Bemis Abrams, Part One - https://www.80stvladies.com/episode/episode-201-welcome-to-season-2-advanced-tv-herstory-w-cynthia-bemis-abram-part-1   80s TV Ladies (31 May 2023) – Advanced TV Herstory w/ Cynthia Bemis Abrams, Part Two - https://www.80stvladies.com/episode/episode-202-advanced-tv-herstory-aw-cynthia-bemis-abrams-part-two   Wiser Than Me with Julia Louis-Dreyfus (11 Apr 2023) – Jane Fonda on Female Friendships - https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/jane-fonda-on-female-friendships/id1678559416?i=1000608248297   Shows Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Cagney and Lacey, China Beach, Designing Women, Extraordinary Attorney Woo, Grey's Anatomy, Lou Grant, My So-Called Life, Murphy Brown, Remington Steele, and Scarecrow and Mrs. King    People Annie Potts, Barney Rosenzweig, Diane English, Eilish Zebrasky, Eugenie Ross-Leming, Geena Davis, Jean Smart, Juanita Bartlett, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Linda Bloodworth-Thomason, Melissa Roth, Neema Barnette, Sergio Perez, Sharon Gless, Shonda Rhimes, Stephanie Zimbalist, and Tyne Daly    Books  Backlash: The Undeclared War Against American Women by Susan Faludi - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Backlash:_The_Undeclared_War_Against_American_Women    Lou Grant: The Making of TV's Top Newspaper Drama by Douglass K. R.J. Stewart - Crazy Hawk: A Post-Apocalyptic Thriller. This is episode 696 of Teaching Learning Leading K12, an audio podcast. R.J. Stewart, the author of the post-apocalyptic thriller, Crazy Hawk, is best known for developing, writing and producing Xena: Warrior Princess (starring Lucy Lawless), once the highest-rated television show in syndication.   He started out as a teamster for nine years and a fledgling stage actor, until he got his first break, writing for the NBC romance detective drama starring Pierce Brosnan, Remington Steele. It would parlay into a 22-year Hollywood career that includes writing credits for movies The Rundown, starring Duane “The Rock” Johnson, Major League 2, starring Charlie Sheen, and television's Cleopatra 2525. He also worked on projects with Kevin Costner, Rebecca De Mornay and James Garner.  Stewart was born in Brooklyn, New York, but has lived most of his life in the American West. His youth as the son of an Air Force sergeant was spent across six states and Greece, Italy, and Germany. His American family roots trace back nearly two centuries.  He has spent thousands of hours riding a trail horse and likes to collect historical documents specializing in 18th century history.  Stewart graduated from Florida International University.  He lives on a San Diego County horse ranch with his wife of 51 years, Kat O'Connor. Various horses and dogs have been kind enough to share their ranch with R.J. and Kat, including Danny, a beautiful palomino who inspired the creation of the buckskin character in Crazy Hawk, his first novel.  For more information, please see www.hovartus.com.  Awesome conversation! I am a big fan of the Xena series and Remington Steele! It was so cool to talk to their creator. So much to learn! Crazy Hawk is an awesome adventure story! You need to read this novel! “It wasn't nearly as traumatic for me as I was expecting it to be. I was a little concerned about how I would transition from having to get up and having that routine to creating a new one.” - Sharon   Welcome to another edition of Real Retirement Stories - a series of Take Back Retirement. Our hosts Stephanie McCullough and Kevin Gaines chat with Sharon Johnson. After an illustrious 22-year career as an executive assistant at ABC Television, Sharon didn't slow down—instead, she switched gears and found a new calling co-hosting the 80s TV Ladies Podcast. Join in to hear her incredible journey from the bustling world of television execs to the equally dynamic realm of podcasting, where she revisits iconic 80s TV shows with a modern feminist perspective. Sharon's story is a testament to the transformative power of embracing change and finding joy in unexpected places.   Sharon originally envisioned her retirement as a time for travel and catching up on missed TV series, but life had other plans. Through her podcast, she rekindled her love for classic 80s shows like "A Different World," gaining fresh insights into the progressive roles women played both in front and behind the camera. Sharon also shares her serendipitous entry into the television industry in the mid-90s, working for an independent production company, and how those experiences shaped her understanding of TV production and storytelling.   Whether you're intrigued by the behind-the-scenes workings of TV production or the fresh perspectives that come with retirement, Sharon's story is a celebration of staying active, engaged, and ever-curious. Don't miss this inspiring episode filled with nostalgia, wisdom, and the boundless opportunities that come with retirement.     Key Topics: Sharon's Original Plan for Retirement (04:07) 80s TV Shows and their Portrayal of Women (06:29) TV Industry Changes and Experiences of Women Behind the Camera (11:35) Retirement Concerns and Health Insurance Planning (17:27) Retirement and Transition from Office to Remote Work During COVID-19 (22:01) Analyzing Programs such as Grey's Anatomy and Remington Steele (25:56) Retirement Planning, Identity, and Transition (37:37) Stephanie and Kevin's Wrap-Up (43:13)     Resources: 80s TV Ladies Podcast     If you like what you've been hearing, we invite you to subscribe on your favorite platform and leave us a review. We start with the question "Which Rice is the right Rice?" Then, it's on Remington Steele. It's aged well. Was well ahead of its time. A commercial for American Airlines turns us to the 1984 Presidential Election and look back at the Democratic National Convention, which began less than a week after the All-Star Game in San Francisco. While Mondale was chosen as the sacrificial lamb vs. President Ronald Reagan, out in front of the Moscone Center protestors were calling on the government to recognize the AIDS epidemic. Unfortunately, it really took until Magic Johnson announced he was HIV positive on November 7, 1991. I've got a 1992 card that commemorates his announcement. We then turn to the Golden Age of Serial Killers, 1970-1999. And no state had more prolific serial killers during these years than my beloved home state of California. With nods first to predecessors the Zodiac Killer, Ted Bundy, and others, I then give you my top-5 serial killers from the 1980s. Even if you live on the second floor, it might be a good idea to lock your windows tonight.

You'll feel like a fly on the wall as she speaks...and shares her memories of how she changed Hollywood forever for other women. She is a true trailblazer and someone who redefined what being female in the film industry meant! I am so grateful she agreed to tell her stories on the show. For Janet's website click here! “They said I could do whatever I want. So I thought, I'll write a boy-girl detective show that kills this stupid genre.” – Glenn Gordon Caron, creator of MoonlightingSome walk by night, some fly by day… Susan and Sharon cross paths with legendary writer, director, producer and creator of the classic 80's series Moonlighting for a rollicking conversation about David, Maddie, Ms. DiPesto – and everything in between!Moonlighting ran from 1985-1989. It starred Cybill Shepherd and a then-unknown Bruce Willis and would become a landmark classic of 80s television. Tasked with making “one of those boy-girl detective shows” Caron agreed on the condition that he could do whatever he wanted. What he – and as it turns out, we – wanted, was Moonlighting. Glenn Gordon Caron has been a force in television for over four decades, since his first job on Taxi – followed by a stint on Remington Steele -- before going on to create the seminal 80s romantic comedy/detective series Moonlighting. Caron later went on to create the long-running Patricia Arquette show, Medium. Moonlighting is now streaming on Hulu.THE CONVERSATION300 SONGS in 66 episodes – the MANY hurdles of getting the music rights for Moonlighting for the Hulu broadcasts.Glenn's first pilot turned out to be for a little actor named… James Stewart.Steven Bochco asked Glenn to come work on his new show, then called Hill Street Station: “I said no – this is never gonna go.”On the crazy tone of Moonlighting: “I'm showing the episodes to my youngest child, who's fourteen. He's come to believe that I'm mentally ill.”Cybill Shepherd signed on to Moonlighting -- after reading only half the pilot! On casting the role of David Addison: “I brought Bruce Willis in to audition eleven times. They rejected him ten times.”The role of David Addison's brother was originally written for… David Lee Roth?!GETTING PAST THE CENSORS: ABC censors wouldn't allow David & Maddie to say “frig”. But “fig”? Um, Okay.On being a maverick: “I was young and arrogant and didn't care about my reputation. I would live to regret that.”So, join Susan and Sharon – and Glenn – as they talk Aaron Spelling, Pierce Brosnan, Peter Peter Bogdanovich, 100-page scripts, directing Orson Wells – and getting kicked by nuns!AUDIOGRAPHY Watch Moonlighting on Hulu.Check out the Moonlighting fan website, DavidandMaddie.com Susan's new play Confidence (and the Speech) has just been published!
