This Sunday on Vintage Classic Radio's "Sunday Night Playhouse," we kick off with a special Lux Radio Theatre presentation of "A Little Bit of Heaven," which first aired on December 30, 1940. This heartwarming episode tells the story of Mary, a young girl with a powerful imagination that transforms her difficult life in a New York tenement into a fantastical world of wonder and joy. The episode starred Gloria Jean as Mary, along with notable performances by C. Aubrey Smith, Robert Stack, and Margaret Lindsay, who each brought to life the vibrant characters populating Mary's world. Following this delightful tale, we continue with another Lux Radio Theatre classic, "Death Takes a Holiday," originally broadcast on March 22, 1937. This thought-provoking drama explores what happens when Death decides to take a break from his duties to understand human emotions better, particularly to grasp why people fear him so intensely. Fredric March reprised his film role as Death, joined by an impressive cast including Kay Hammond as Grazia, the woman who catches Death's interest, and Leslie Banks, who portrayed Duke Lambert, host to the enigmatic guest who turns out to be Death himself. Join us for these captivating stories from the golden age of radio, brought to life by a stellar cast.

Eight movie reviews today, Punch it. Body blow body blow. #1(Bedknobs and Broomsticks 1971)As always for me, this one looks so very much better than it is. Don't get me wrong it's got murder she wrote and Witches, but it still puts me to sleep in the middle sadly. #2(Death takes a holiday 1971) Gee whiz V did not love the dialogue here, not wrong, yet for me it kinda added to the oddness of the whole twilight zone package. At least Brad Pitt is not doing a terribly racist accent in this adaptation of the timeless tale where the grim reaper takes some time off to see what love is, oh the back log. #3 (The autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman 1974) Great movie where Cicely Tyson takes us from slavery to the civil rights movement when she is put into what I can only describe as “really bad makeup” Great director here is John Korty who directed Star Wars……..The Ewok Adventure in 84. #4(1900 1976) Omg this movie! It is long, intense, great, and unwatchable at times, unless you like real onscreen animal torture, we'll get into it. French guy from Green Card is here as well as Taxi Driver, Dominique Sanda (Janice from Damnation alley), and the sacred fluids guy from Dr. Strangelove Sterling Hayden. #5 (Tracks 1976) The movie where Dennis Hopper kisses weird. Hopper and the guy from quantum leap are on a train, (Cylon Q leap guy, not Enterprise captain one)Rad N trippy director here is Henry Jaglom. #6 (The getting of Wisdom 1977) Early film from director Bruce Beresford (Tender Mercies, Breaker Morrant, Driving Miss Daisy) Here we have too much mean sass at this school. It's a coming of age type thing that introduces Austrian Hero Laura Tweedle, played here by Susannah Fowle. #7 (Patrick 1978) Freaky Telekinesis patient is totally brain dead, but he spits. Susan Penhaligon plays Kathy who scores a weird job in this movie that the internet told me was an underrated classic, it is not. #8 (Who'll stop the Rain 1978) Nick Nolte is back from Nam, and he has to help his buddy who doesn't know shit about smuggling drugs. Tuesday Weld plays Marge who is caught in the middle. Is this movie good? Find out with us. Thanks for listening.

He went on to become a soldier and joined the Royal Army Medical Corp and went to training in Lichfield. He inadvertently became top recruit due to a negligent discharge by a colleague. He was based in Aldershot and his experience was full on. His medical training set him up for life. He transferred from the RAMC to the Royal Military Police and was immediately posted to Northern Ireland with 176 Provost Comp. At the conclusion of his tour to Northern Ireland he was posted to Colchester to serve 156 Provost Company and the larger-than-life Staff Sgt Sam Appleyard. Having arrived in Colchester he served with Staff Sgt Sam Appleyard and remembers L/Cpl Paul Lon who was killed in action. At the conclusion of his service Mick joined Hertfordshire Police and served in Hitchin and the regime was very structured and standards were very important to him and the rest of the team. During a fit of peak Mick walked away from the job and went travelling !Having run out of money he returned to the UK and whilst driving through Hertfordshire he decided to call into the headquarters and ask for his old job back. Unbelievably they took him back into the fold. Mick thrived on proactive operations and formed a relationship with members of the British Transport Police whilst conducting operations at the local train stations. He transferred to the BTP and started at Kings Cross. As an officer Mick was one of many who dealt people who died by suicide. He recounts a tragic time in Cyprus when he was called to a head on RTC where the occupants of the vehicles were seriously injured and resulted in fatalities. He felt that he had failed at the scene( which he hadn't). and was advised that he was too emotionally attached to the incident. This advice assisted through his career until the emotional baggage became too overwhelming.Mick was having issues in the workplace that meant he went off sick. He found the senior management of BTP and Occupational Health as being underwhelming. He was accused of working outside of the job and the bullying tactics got the better of him. Mick has now retired and undertakes medical training including FREC 3 training and would welcome a meeting with the senior management from BTP Hosted on Acast. "Yours Truly, Johnny Dollar" is a classic American radio drama series that originally aired from 1949 to 1962. It is often considered one of the best and longest-running detective shows in the history of old-time radio. Created by writer Jack Johnstone, the series followed the adventures of Johnny Dollar, an insurance investigator known for his dedication to solving insurance-related cases and his distinctive catchphrase, "Yours Truly, Johnny Dollar."The show typically featured a format known as the "expense account" format, where Johnny Dollar was portrayed as a freelance insurance investigator. Each episode began with Johnny receiving a phone call from an insurance company, assigning him to investigate a suspicious insurance claim or loss. He was then sent to various locations across the United States (and sometimes abroad) to unravel the mysteries surrounding the claims. One unique aspect of the show was its narrative structure. Johnny Dollar's investigations were presented in a flashback format, where he would detail the events of his investigation to the insurance company's accountant, explaining how he spent the money allocated for the case. This storytelling device allowed for a first-person narrative style that drew listeners into the mysteries and the life of the investigator.Throughout the series, Johnny Dollar was portrayed by several talented actors, including Charles Russell, Edmond O'Brien, John Lund, Bob Bailey, and Mandel Kramer. Each actor brought their own distinctive style to the character, contributing to the show's longevity and popularity."Yours Truly, Johnny Dollar" is celebrated for its well-written scripts, engaging mysteries, and the charismatic character of Johnny Dollar himself. It combined elements of crime drama, suspense, and adventure, making it a beloved radio program during its heyday. The show's memorable theme music and Johnny Dollar's sign-off, "Yours Truly," became iconic elements of the series.

Death Takes a Halliwell" Episode aka Wooooow, during Black History Month?! The Shadow was one of the most popular radio shows in history. The show went on the air in August of 1930 and stayed on until the early 50's "Who knows what evil lurks in the hearts of men? The Shadow knows!" The opening lines of the "Detective Story" program captivated listeners and are instantly recognizable even today. Originally the narrator of the series of macabre tales, the eerie voice known as The Shadow became so popular to listeners that "Detective Story" was soon renamed "The Shadow," and the narrator became the star of the old-time mystery radio series, which ran until 1954. A figure never seen, only heard, the Shadow. along with his lover and partner Margot, was an invincible crime fighter. He possessed many gifts which enabled him to overcome any enemy. Besides his tremendous strength, he could defy gravity, speak any language, unravel any code, and become invisible with his famous ability to "cloud men's minds." Learn more about your ad choices. Harry McGraw is back in a hot mess of an episode that is redeemed by Adam West and Levar Burton! Plus, Bridget and TJ's friendship is in jeopardy over TJ's secret interests.
Each story started with a phone call from an insurance executive, calling on Johnny to investigate an unusual claim. Each story required Johnny to travel to some distant locale, usually within the United States but sometimes abroad, where he was almost always threatened with personal danger in the course of his investigations. Johnny's file on each case was usually referenced as a "matter," as in "The Silver Blue Matter" or "The Forbes Matter". Later episodes were more fanciful, with titles like "The Wayward Trout Matter" and "The Price of Fame Matter" (the latter featuring a rare guest-star appearance by Vincent Price as himself). Johnny usually stuck to business, but would sometimes engage in romantic dalliances with women he encountered in his travels; later episodes gave Johnny a steady girlfriend, Betty Lewis. Johnny's precious recreational time was usually spent fishing, and it was not uncommon for Johnny's clients to exploit this favorite pastime in convincing him to take on a job near good fishing locations. His past was rarely mentioned, but Dollar in one episode described himself as a four-year US Marine veteran who then worked as a police officer for a decade before changing careers to insurance investigation. Yours Truly, Johnny Dollar, was a very popular radio show which usually started with a phone call from an insurance executive, calling on Johnny to investigate an unusual claim. Each story was recounted in flashback, as Johnny listed each line item from his expense account. The episodes generally finished with Johnny tallying up his account and traveling back to Hartford, CT, where he was based. Most of the expense account related to transportation, lodging, and meals and served to transition between scenes, but no incidental expense was too small for Johnny to itemize, as in "Item nine, 10 cents. Aspirin. I needed them." Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

With all of the headlines about the pending death of writing at the hands of artificial intelligence like ChatGPT, I thought it would be useful to talk about the value of reading and writing and how we inspire kids to do both. My guest to help explore these issues is Sharon Lynn. Sharon teaches writing at UAT, a technology university where the students and faculty are very familiar with chat bots. She and I discuss strategies for engaging students and her own experience writing and finding a publisher for her wonderful new book, Death Takes a Bath: A Cotswolds Crimes Mystery. More information about Sharon and her book can be found at www.TalkingAboutKids.com.
