It's a big day for Rosebud, as it's our 50th episode. No, we can't quite believe it either! We started Rosebud in September 2023 with Dame Judi Dench, and so we wanted to bring you another theatrical dame for our 50th show. And so it's with pride that we give you one of our greatest actresses, and an old friend of Gyles's, Dame Maureen Lipman. Maureen tells Gyles about her childhood, growing up in a close Jewish family in Hull. Maureen's mother used to encourage her to perform for her friends when they came over for drinks, and Maureen's gift for making people laugh was born. Maureen and Gyles talk about her drama school days, and the early part of her career, with Laurence Olivier at The National Theatre, at the RSC, and in film, in Up The Junction. They talk about the start of her relationship with Jack Rosenthal, whom she eventually married, and about what happened when Hugh Jackman announced, on stage, that he was too sick to do a Saturday matinee of Oklahoma. This episode is full of funny stories, revelations, and impressions. We recorded this live at The Orange Tree Theatre in Richmond, South-West London. At the end of the show there's a special treat, which is a remix of the legendary Rosebud themetune. Enjoy this. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

Her first acting job was with Dame Judi Dench; Cillian Murphy has called her a phenomenal actress; and she's married to the actor behind everyone's favorite prankster on “The Office.” The woman in question is none other than Emily Blunt, one of the most popular and versatile actresses in Hollywood today. But how did Emily's issue with stuttering as a child actually lead her toward a career in acting? What role did Emily play in helping an acclaimed actor move from co-star to brother-in-law? What was it like to have her husband direct her in the “A Quiet Place” movies? And how is it that Emily's resume now not only lists actress and singer, but also executive producer of a Western? These are just a few of the many questions we explore in this fascinating episode! A big thank you to Haley for her listener shout out! The Rich Zeoli Show- Full Episode (05/17/2024): 3:05pm- Rich opens the show on a somber note—friend, and frequent listener, Sid Weiss passed away earlier this week. 3:30pm- While appearing before the House Select Subcommittee on the Weaponization of the Federal Government on Wednesday, Michael Cohen's former attorney Robert Costello accused Cohen of lying during the Donald Trump “hush money” trial. Costello said that Cohen once told him: “I swear to God, Bob, I don't have anything on Donald Trump…I don't have anything on Donald Trump.” You can read more here: https://www.washingtonexaminer.com/news/justice/3004761/michael-cohen-lawyer-accuses-lying-trump-trial/ 3:40pm- Reacting to Michael Cohen's testimony in the Donald Trump “hush money” trial on Thursday, CNN legal analyst Elie Honig said Cohen had his “knees chopped out” from under him during cross-examination. 4:05pm- On Thursday, President Joe Biden asserted executive privilege—preventing the House of Representatives from acquiring audio recordings of an interview the president conducted with Department of Justice Special Counsel Robert Hur. In a letter to House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer (R-KY), White House counsel Edward Siskel reasoned: “The absence of a legitimate need for the audio recordings lays bare your likely goal—to chop them up, distort them and use them for partisan political purposes.” 4:15pm- The Wall Street Journal Editorial Board writes of President Joe Biden's assertion of executive privilege: “The privilege claim is bogus on two grounds. First, once a President waives a privilege right, it can't be reclaimed. Mr. Biden conceded that the interview wasn't privileged, and there's no legal basis to say that a recording is different from a transcript. Even if Mr. Biden had first claimed privilege over the interview, that wouldn't pass legal muster because the interview subject didn't concern his presidential duties or White House deliberations. It concerned his handling of documents while in the Senate, as Vice President, or as a private citizen. Mr. Siskel's claim that the goal is to protect the Justice Department's ‘law enforcement investigations' also doesn't work. Dame Judi Dench has played everyone from the writer Iris Murdoch to M in the James Bond films. But among the roles the actress is most closely associated, are Shakespeare's heroines and some of his villians. Amongst those roles are the star-crossed lover Juliet, the comical Titania and the tragic Lady Macbeth. Now she's reflecting on that work, and Shakespeare's work in Shakespeare: The Man Who Pays The Rent. The book is comprised of Dench's conversations with her friend, the actor and director Brendan O'Hea.For sponsor-free episodes of Consider This, sign up for Consider This+ via Apple Podcasts or at plus.npr.org.Email us at considerthis@npr.org.Learn more about sponsor message choices: podcastchoices.com/adchoicesNPR Privacy Policy

Oh, behave! Please welcome to the podcast stage Dame Judi Dench and her book "And Furthermore." Britain's most beloved actress regaled us with tales of every single goddamn play in which she's performed, her friendship with Harvey Weinstein, Shakespeare, wet kilts, her love of champagne, her feud on the set of "Tomorrow Never Dies," and staying loyal to British designers. Then we ponder the age-old question, "What's harder to do: DRAMA or COMEDY"?See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

It's Die Hard in a Bond reboot! In this episode, Phil, Liam, and guest Ben Rufus Green discuss the 1995 James Bond blockbuster GoldenEye and its many connections to the Die Hard franchise. They explore the premise of the film, its self-reflexivity, and the surprisingly high amount of ‘Die Hard DNA' present in the movie, which goes way beyond the historical connection between the newly-minted 007 Pierce Brosnan and original Die Hard director John McTiernan. After the dissolution of the Soviet Union, MI6 agent James Bond (Pierce Brosnan) uncovers a sinister plot led by rogue Russian operatives to use a Soviet-era orbital space weapon codenamed ‘Goldeneye' to launch an attack on London. In the process, Bond teams up with Natalya Simonova (Izabella Scorupco), a Russian satellite expert, in a globe-trotting race against time to prevent the strike. The boys discuss the continuity and multiverse aspect of the Bond franchise, share their favorite Bond films, and rate their favorite Bond actors, while also discussing the very particular qualities required to play this iconic role. They also go deep on the films' excellent villains, with particular attention paid to Alec Trevelyan (Sean Bean) and Xenia Onatopp (Famke Janssen), as well as its leading lady Izabella Scorupco, and the sturdy supporting cast that includes the likes of Robbie Coltrane, Joe Don Baker, Michael Kitchen, Gottfried John, Alan Cumming and Dame Judi Dench as M. As this is a Bond movie, fortunately the boys are already wearing their tuxedos, allowing them seamless entry into the ‘Die Hard Oscars', where awards are dispensed for ‘Exceptional Thief', ‘Dick of the Movie', and ‘Best Death. As always the conversation concludes with a Bond-centric edition of the ‘Double Jeopardy' trivia quiz! The 2001 romance drama, Iris, captures the life of novelist Iris Murdoch between flashbacks of her youth and her present-day battle with Alzheimer's. This movie's poignant and effective tug on the heartstrings is no doubt a testament to the stellar cast including Kate Winslet, Dame Judi Dench, Jim Broadbent, Hugh Bonneville, and Penelope Wilton. This film is melancholy, but it packs a punch in just over 90 minutes. Tune in to hear how it ranks out of all 46 Kate Winslet movies!WebsiteInstagramMerch Support the show
