"December 23, 1981. Burke County, North Carolina. After leaving an office Christmas party, 19-year old Rhonda Hinson begins her drive home, but her car is soon discovered in a ditch on Mineral Springs Mountain Road about a half-mile from her residence. Rhonda's body is lying outside the vehicle and it turns out she was fatally shot by someone who fired a bullet which passed through the car's trunk and the driver's seat before it penetrated her heart. An eyewitness reports having seen an unidentified man near the vehicle's driver's side door shortly before Rhonda's body was discovered, but he cannot be identified. During the holiday season of 1981, Rhonda Hinson, a recent high school graduate and clerical worker, attended her first company Christmas party. After leaving the party around midnight, Rhonda began her 10-mile drive home. At 1:00 AM, her mother, Judy Hinson, awoke with a premonition that something terrible had happened to her daughter. Rhonda’s car was found just half a mile from her home, with the driver’s door open and Rhonda lying dead nearby. She had been killed by a single bullet from a high-powered rifle, which had penetrated her car and struck her heart. Initially considered a random act of violence, the investigation later suggested that Rhonda may have been targeted by someone she knew. In the weeks leading up to her death, Rhonda exhibited uncharacteristic behavior, such as asking her father to accompany her on trips and expressing concerns about dating a married man. Witnesses reported seeing suspicious activity on the night of her murder, including a blue Chevrolet with two white males and a dark blue Trans-Am near the crime scene. One witness, under hypnosis, recalled more details about the vehicles and a potential suspect. Despite the passage of time, Rhonda’s mother maintains her room exactly as it was, cherishing memories of her daughter. A $20,000 reward is still being offered for information leading to the resolution of the case. Mark and Amy break down the Unsolved Mysteries segment and dive into the entire story. We have a special winter episode this week with two eerie winter crimes. Lauren takes us back to the winter of 1998 where a Missouri family disappears without a trace. There was no sign of Susan Brouk or her two children, and the Brouks didn't take their winter coats or snow boots and it was below freezing. After the family is discovered murdered about half a mile from their home, investigators began the search for who could commit such a heinous crime. Kenzie covers the unsolved case of Rhonda Hinson who was murdered coming home from a company Christmas party. Investigators seem to think it's a lost cause and will never be solved, but the family is still holding out hope 40 years later. On December 22nd, 1981, 19-year-old Rhonda Annette Hinson headed to an office Christmas party. In the early morning of the 23rd, she was found about a half mile from her home lying outside her car on the should of the road. The police determined that Rhonda had been shot by a high-powered rifle that went through her trunk, back seat, and into the driver's seat. Join Mike and Morf as they discuss the baffling death of Rhonda Hinson. Witnesses came forward the descriptions of cars seen near Rhonda's car. Police had to figure out if these were people involved in Rhonda's death or people who stopped to see what was happening. What clouded the waters even more was that it was revealed that Rhonda was not supposed to come home that night, and only a few people knew of her change in plans. The police looked closely at Rhonda's boyfriend, Greg, and a friend named Mark, whose girlfriend said she saw Rhonda's sweater in his car before Rhonda was killed. That sweater was later found in Rhonda's car. 41 years later, two big questions remain. What exactly happened in the death of Rhonda Hinson, and who was involved? December 22, 1981, 19-year-old Rhonda Hinson left her first company Christmas party and she would never make it home that evening, or ever again. Rhonda would be found in a ditch, her body near her car, which was only roughly a half of a mile from her home, with a single gunshot wound. ...because what we hear a lot of on this episode are people talking out both sides of their mouths.Erin kicks things off with the decades old unsolved mystery of the disappearance of Lauria Bible and Ashley Freeman, two high school girls from Oklahoma who disappeared a few days before New Year's Eve in 1999. Ashley's parents were found murdered and the home was set ablaze, but the girls bodies - nor the girls - have ever been found and nobody can be trusted - not even law enforcement.O'Dell then tells the story of 19-year-old Rhonda Hinson, who was shot and killed while driving home from a Christmas Party. The bullet went through the trunk of her moving car, through the driver's seat and pierced her heart. Was it an assassin, a crazy accident or a really lucky shot made by someone who had it out for her? Recently, an investigative journalist has started asking questions of those closest to Rhonda, and a lot of fingers are being pointed. Will the case finally be solved?Erin closes things out with a story about a man who was killed by tampons and then O'Dell cleanses the palette with a surprise visit from Santa. On the night of December 22, 1981, Rhonda Hinson would leave an office holiday party only to be found hours later in a ditch beside her car with a bullet in her back. What exactly happened that night? Who shot Rhonda Hinson? How did she end up outside her car? This week, the guys attempt to find answers to a mystery that has plagued a small North Carolina town for over 34 years. Who killed Rhonda Hinson?
December 22, 1981. 19-year old Rhonda Hinson attends an office Christmas party in Hickory, North Carolina. Sometime after midnight, Rhonda is driving back home when she is struck by a bullet fired from a high-powered rifle, killing her instantly and causing her car to crash into the ditch. Incredibly, the bullet manages to travel through the vehicle’s trunk, back seat, and driver’s seat, striking Rhonda in the heart and killing her instantly. The seemingly impossible fatal shot, along with a strange eyewitness sighting of an unidentified man at the scene, has led to debate about whether Rhonda was deliberately targeted or the unfortunate victim of a freak accident. Join me for a new episode of “The Trail Went Cold”, as I analyze the baffling murder of Rhonda Hinson.
