Seven people lost their lives in the early hours of Saturday 22 August 2026 when a Volkswagen Passat travelling the wrong way along the A66 at South Bank, near Middlesbrough, collided head-on with a marked Cleveland Police armed response vehicle.Among those who died were Cleveland Police officers PC Matthew Blades, 37, and PC Tom Clough, 38, along with the five occupants of the Passat. In this episode, former detectives Tom Wood and Simon McLean examine what is currently known about the tragedy while recognising that the investigation into the circumstances surrounding the collision is still at an early stage.Tom explains how police pursuits are controlled, why a pursuit can be abandoned when the danger becomes too great, and the specialist training required to drive police vehicles at high speed.Simon and Tom also reflect on incidents from their own police careers which brought home the risks faced by officers on the road.Simon recalls the 1994 death of Strathclyde Police officer PC Stuart Simpson, who was killed when his police vehicle was struck head-on by a car travelling the wrong way on the M8.Tom remembers losing two traffic officers while he was an acting divisional commander in West Lothian — and the devastating experience of personally going to the home of one of the officers to tell his wife that her husband had died. The conversation also examines:how police vehicle pursuits are managed and terminated;the highly specialised training of police traffic drivers;the role of Armed Response Vehicles in British policing;why most British police officers continue to patrol without firearms;the impact that the death of colleagues can have on a close-knit police force;and the support needed by officers and other emergency workers who attend traumatic scenes. The circumstances leading to the A66 collision are being investigated by the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC). Tom and Simon therefore distinguish between what is known and the questions that remain unanswered.00:00 — Cold Open00:50 — The A66 tragedy: seven people killed02:43 — How police pursuits are controlled and called off06:36 — What we know about the A66 collision08:41 — Simon remembers PC Stuart Simpson and the 1994 M8 tragedy10:35 — Tom recalls losing two traffic officers in West Lothian15:41 — How road policing departments operate17:28 — The specialist training of high-speed police drivers20:47 — What is an Armed Response Vehicle?25:04 — Why most British police officers remain unarmed25:52 — The unanswered social-media question26:37 — Closing thoughtsCrime Time Inc. — Real cases. Simon Levy: Two Murders, Multiple Failures — What Went Wrong?

How can repeated failures across the criminal justice system allow a dangerous offender to remain a threat? In this episode of Crime Time Inc. Weekly News, former detectives Tom Wood and Simon McLean examine the case of Simon Levy and the murders of Carmenza Valencia-Trujillo and Sheryl Wilkins.Tom and Simon look beyond the crimes themselves to the series of decisions and system failures surrounding Levy's offending history. They discuss acknowledged errors involving the Metropolitan Police, British Transport Police and Crown Prosecution Service, and examine how information was handled as his offending escalated. The discussion includes delays in charging, failures to place crucial information before the court when bail was being considered, inadequate monitoring as a registered sex offender, missed court appearances and the decision to downgrade his risk assessment from high to medium.Drawing on decades of real investigative experience, Tom and Simon consider where responsibility lies when individual officers may be capable and conscientious but the systems around them fail. Tom reflects on his own experience as a Senior Investigating Officer, the importance of supervision, properly resourced murder squads, intelligence systems such as HOLMES, and the need to make sure critical information is actually joined together. They also discuss accountability when investigations go wrong — including the extraordinary prospect of officers involved in the Levy investigation themselves facing investigation — and ask whether these were isolated mistakes or evidence of a much wider systemic problem. As Tom puts it, policing needs good people and good systems. In this case, their conclusion is stark:The dots were not joined up.Tom Wood and Simon McLean bring decades of experience in murder investigations, serious crime, undercover policing and senior operational command to examine what happened, what should have happened, and what lessons policing must learn.Contains discussion of murder, sexual offending and violence.Chapters00:00 Cold Open00:48 Simon Levy: Two Murders and a Criminal Justice Failure01:46 Sex-Offender Risk & Missed Warning Signs02:58 The Timeline: Assaults, Rape, Bail and Murder04:08 Inconclusive Postmortems & Forensic Delays06:28 SIO Accountability & Investigating the Investigators08:50 Arrested, Released — Then a Second Murder10:48 “The Dots Were Not Joined Up”: Resources, HOLMES & Murder Squads12:07 Bail, Monitoring, Missed Court Dates & Risk Downgrade13:28 Portobello, Robert Black & Why Appearances Can Deceive15:44 Assumptions, Bias & Judging People by AppearanceReal cases. Could facial recognition become the biggest breakthrough in catching criminals since DNA matching?Live facial recognition is becoming an increasingly powerful tool for police — but as the technology expands, so does the debate over privacy, surveillance, regulation and the rights of innocent people caught on camera. In this episode of Crime Time Inc., former Scottish detectives Tom Wood and Simon McLean examine the growing use of facial recognition technology, CCTV and digital evidence in modern policing.Tom argues that facial recognition could become as important to criminal investigations as fingerprints, CCTV and DNA, while Simon puts the opposing arguments to him: should police be able to routinely scan thousands of innocent people simply because the technology can identify wanted suspects? They discuss the need for safeguards, regulation and courtroom scrutiny, as well as the increasing importance of CCTV, doorbell cameras and other visual evidence in major investigations. The conversation also explores identification evidence and corroboration in Scottish criminal law. Tom explains why identifying a suspect is only part of the evidential picture — and why another independent strand of evidence can be crucial. Then the discussion turns to police warrants and the reality of tracking down wanted people. Tom and Simon explain the different types of warrants officers encounter, including non-payment warrants, non-appearance warrants, arrest warrants, search warrants, European Arrest Warrants, extradition and surveillance warrants.Drawing on their own policing careers, they recall the days of folders containing hundreds of outstanding warrants, early-morning attempts to trace wanted suspects, prisoner escorts across Britain — and one memorable flight involving a prisoner facing 22 years behind bars and a final whisky. Finally, Tom considers what happens when artificial intelligence, facial recognition and police databases begin working together. Could officers eventually receive real-time alerts identifying wanted people as they move through towns and cities? The scenario under the microscope: The Closed Loop, a world where a handful of vertically integrated platform ecosystems, not governments or open markets, come to govern everyday commercial life. The overarching story: convenience becomes a form of private governance, AI agents become the primary interface between brands and consumers, and marketing itself evolves into an exercise in shaping the instructions humans give their digital assistants.Key Topics DiscussedA control-vs-distribution framework for mapping four AI-driven futures, building on WPP's 2020 "Advertising in 2030" reportThe Closed Loop scenario: persistent AI assistants that manage household purchasing, negotiate on your behalf, and default to platform-preferred merchants and payment systemsWhy closed platforms must consistently outperform open-source alternatives for consumers to accept this trade-offThe regulatory gap between AI capability development and policymaking, referencing Dario Amodei's commentary and Mark Zuckerberg's Wall Street Journal op-ed on open AIHow brand purchase decisions increasingly get intermediated by agents — and why "human prompt injection" (shaping brand preference before the prompt is even written) becomes a core marketing disciplineMedia planning's evolving role in identifying when and how brand preference actually gets setGlobal parallels already in motion outside the US, including Tencent's WeChat super-app, plus Xiaomi and ByteDance's platform ambitionsThe national champion question: will governments cede control to platforms, or assert regulatory authority over themA year-by-year backcast of how this future could unfold, from the "convenience bargain" (2028–2030) through agentic commerce maturity (2032–2033) to full platform-architected life (2034–2035)CRM supremacy, membership psychology (with a Costco parallel), and brand-specific platform variants as retention toolsThree concrete moves for marketers in 2026: one strategic bet, one risk to map, and one signal to watchChapter Stamps00:00 - Introduction & Cold Open00:36 - Series Overview: Four Plausible Futures for 203504:32 - The Framework: Control vs. Distribution Axis06:53 - Introducing "The Closed Loop" Scenario09:35 - What's Missing Today: The Gap Between Now and 203511:09 - The Policy Race: Capability vs. Regulation15:26 - Open vs. Closed AI: The Zuckerberg Op-Ed Debate17:42 - The Existential Question: What Happens to Brands?19:32 - Agents as Intermediaries & Platform Differentiation21:38 - Human Prompt Injection & Brand Preference24:41 - Agencies' New Role: Negotiating Platform Environments26:49 - Beyond the US: Tencent, Xiaomi, ByteDance & Super Apps27:55 - National Champions & the Government-Platform Power Struggle29:19 - Backcasting the Timeline: How We Get There32:23 - 2028–2030: The Convenience Bargain34:30 - CRM Supremacy & the Membership Model36:53 - 2034–2035: Platforms as Life's Architecture40:21 - Three Moves for 2026: Bet, Risk, Signal44:50 - Next Week Preview: "The Agent Commons"

Why do smart investors continue to make costly mistakes—even after years of experience? Former Wall Street trader and performance coach Evan Marks says the answer has less to do with markets and more to do with the way our brains process uncertainty, emotion, and pressure. In this conversation with Maggie Lake, Evan explains why successful investing isn't just about having better information—it's about making better decisions. Drawing on decades of experience coaching hedge fund managers, CEOs, professional athletes, and other elite performers, he explores why investors repeat the same mistakes, how emotions quietly influence every investment decision, and what separates consistently successful investors from everyone else. They discuss reacting versus responding, intuition versus impulsivity, overcoming self-sabotage, handling market volatility, learning from both success and failure, and practical techniques to improve decision-making when the stakes are highest.Whether you're managing a portfolio or simply trying to become a better decision-maker, this conversation offers a powerful framework for improving performance—both in markets and in life.
