Three-time WNBA All-Star Dearica Hamby has sued the WNBA and her former team, the Las Vegas Aces, for pregnancy discrimination. Shortly after securing the Aces' first WNBA Championship and signing a two-year contract extension with the team, Hamby revealed she was pregnant. Within months of her disclosure, Hamby was told she was being traded and losing certain employment-related benefits. Alleging violations of Title VII and Nevada state law, Hamby has opened discussion about pregnancy and discrimination in women's professional sports. At the same time, her suit recalls how women's sports are treated differently from men's sports, especially when it comes to compensation. Kristin Hendriksen and Amit Bindra discuss Hamby's case from an employment law perspective, while also touching on broader issues that plague professional sports. On today's episode of the podcast I chat with HR professional Kira La Forgia about the WNBA Hamby suit and what it means for small businesses. HR is something that's relevant to all small businesses. Whether you have employees or contractors, you have to understand what the qualifications are for those to make sure you're legally compliant. Compliance has the biggest risk and is the baseline for not breaking laws in your legal layers of protection. I'm excited today to bridge the gap between my love of women's basketball and a legal scenario that makes it relevant to small business owners. There is a lawsuit currently happening where a player is currently suing the WNBA and her former team for pregnancy-related discrimination. She filed a complaint, which is the actual term for the legal document you file with the court when you're suing someone. It outlines the facts of the case and what they're suing for. The other party responds to the complaint. This complaint is from the plaintiff's perspective, we don't have any legal documentation from the defendants, so everything in this complaint is alleged, which is important to know Get in Touch with Our GuestKira La Forgia, Founder of ParadigmFollow Kira on Instagram @theparadigmmListen to Kira's podcast, On the Up and Up

On this episode of Conduct Detrimental: THE Sports Law Podcast, Dan Lust (@SportsLawLust) and Mike Kravchenko (Find him on YouTube) bring you the latest updates in sports law as we find ourselves with yet another a jam-packed week across the board. Dan and Mike kick off the episode by diving into the ongoing Olympic gymnastics controversy involving Jordan Chiles. The dispute centers on Chiles' bronze medal, which is now under review by the Court of Arbitration for Sport. The duo dissects the legal complexities surrounding the appeal process, including the new video evidence that could overturn the initial decision, and the broader implications for Olympic scoring disputes. Next, they discuss Haason Reddick's shocking trade request saga with the New York Jets. Despite being recently traded to the Jets from the Eagles, Reddick is now requesting another trade due to ongoing contract disputes. Dan and Mike explore the unprecedented nature of this situation, comparing it to past NFL player holdouts and the potential fallout for both Reddick and the Jets. The conversation then shifts to Marvin Harrison Jr.'s legal battle with Fanatics. Fanatics has sued Harrison Jr. for breach of contract, claiming he is bound by a term sheet that Harrison Jr. asserts was never properly executed. Dan breaks down the possible legal defenses and what this case could mean for athlete endorsement deals and contract law in sports. Mike leads the discussion on Dearica Hamby's federal lawsuit against the Las Vegas Aces and the WNBA. Hamby alleges discrimination and retaliation after revealing her pregnancy, leading to her trade from the Aces to the Sparks. The guys analyze the WNBA's prior investigation into the Aces' conduct, which resulted in significant penalties, and the potential legal outcomes of Hamby's lawsuit. Finally, the episode closes on a somber note as Dan and Mike discuss the tragic drowning of CrossFit athlete Lazar Dukic during a competition. They examine the safety protocols—or lack thereof—that led to the incident, and the broader legal implications for event organizers in extreme sports. Throughout the episode, Dan and Mike also share updates on their latest sports law bets and offer a special giveaway for listeners. The 3-on-3 Big 3—Chris, Terrika, and Sharí—are back to do a deep dive into the Olympic Games. Team USA Men's and Women's basketball teams brought home gold, but our hosts had a spirited discussion on whether or not it was enough. Team USA has spoiled fans over the years by dominating other countries, but this year looked a little different. Serbia and France took the men down to the wire, and for the women, the gold medal game came down to the final shot. Sharí was not pleased with that. Sharí then teed up the crew to preview the 2028 Olympics set to take place in Los Angeles. Terrika made predictions on which members of the Team USA men's basketball team would return and shared her belief that Ja Morant has a place on the roster. Meanwhile, Sharí was more concerned about who would step up for the women's team with Diana Taurasi retiring and other players likely not returning. Chris reassured everyone that the young talent in the WNBA, like Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese, would replace the veteran talent, especially with their opportunity to develop over the next four years. Dearica Hamby dominated headlines directly after the Olympic break when she announced that she had filed a lawsuit against the WNBA and her former team, the Las Vegas Aces. In the signature Jump Ball segment, the crew defends why Dearica is well within her rights to claim discrimination, expressing hope that this will inspire change across leagues for more protections for athletes dealing with pregnancies so they don't lose their livelihoods. I am thrilled to share a truly amazing and miraculous story with you today. I recently met Erin Hamby and heard her story and knew it was one that would touch so many lives and needed to be shared on Honey For Your Heart. Erin walked through an extremely complicated pregnancy and was ultimately told there was a zero percent chance her child would survive. But the Lord told Erin otherwise and through the process her faith grew in ways she could have never imagined. Erin's husband, Blake, wrote a powerful book called Zero Percent Chance which shares the story from his perspective. And today, Erin is here to tell her side of the story and how God worked in her life during that time. So grab a cup of coffee and be prepared to be amazed at the Lord's goodness and encouraged by His faithfulness as you hear Erin's story. Grab their book here: https://www.amazon.com/Zero-Percent-Chance-Blake-Hamby/dp/B0CJ5W1YTX
