Happy New Year! We kick off the year with The Hot Mamas - an all-female collective (coagulation?) full of depth and loaded with surprising instruments. One member describes them as ... if you went to a junkyard and you had a bathtub and you filled the bathtub with everything you could find in the junkyard and then you put it on some skateboards and rolled it down the street, and then the bathtub tipped over and a bunch of hot girls in Scarves and bolas galore on roller skates roll up and they pick up the trash ... I mean instruments and they just start playing ... very professionally. With instrumentation ranging from toy piano, clarinet, banjo, accordion, ukulele, washboard, dueling kazoos to amazing harmonies, The Hot Mamas not only entertain and know how to have a good time but they also captivate audiences with their depth. Their writing styles range from jazzy to pop, from sea chanteys to murder ballads, soulful blues to drinkin'-when-you're-sad country tunes. Send us a textIn the second of our full length live podcasts recorded at the NEC Classic Car Show we were joined by Phil Weeden, the MD of Kelsey Media and Classics World. We have a great chat about his earliest car memories, what got him into the industry, his time editing Car Mechanics magazine, before taking the helm in charge of all Motoring titles at Kelsey Media. From his first memory sat on his father's lap, driving his Talbot (not Chrysler) Avenger around a car park, whilst waiting to pick his Nan up from work to a Ford Escort (with roof rack) which his Father could have died in…Having had a crash just 3 weeks after the seat belt laws came into place… and the seatbelt undoubtedly saved his life. We hope you enjoy this one as much as we did making it. Our thanks to Phil for his time. Named after the radical painter JMW Turner, the Turner Prize was set up in 1984 to celebrate British Contemporary Artists. On Tuesday 24 September 2024 Tate Britain unveiled the work of the four artists who have been shortlisted for this year's prize: Pio Abad, Jasleen Kaur, Claudette Johnson and Delaine Le Bas. At the press view for the Turner Prize 2024 exhibition RNIB Connect Radio's Toby Davey caught up with one of the Curator's of the exhibition Amy Emmerson Martin, Assistant Curator, Contemporary British Art at Tate Britain to firstly find out a bit more about the history and background to the Turner Prize to then an introduction to each of the four shortlisted Artists along with an overview of their work that impressed the Turner Prize panel which is on display at Tate Britain. The winner of the Turner Prize 2024 will be announced on 3 December and the exhibition of the four shortlisted Artists work continues at Tate Britain until 16 February 2025. Description tours with one of Tate's Visitor Engagement Assistants can be booked in advance by either emailing hello@tate.org.uk or calling 020 7887 8888. About the four shortlisted Artists: Pio Abad presents a restaging of his nominated exhibition at the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford, which explores cultural loss and colonial histories. Featuring drawings, sculptures and museum artefacts, Abad brings together in-depth research and collaboration to highlight overlooked histories and connections to everyday life, often from the perspective of his Filipino heritage. Newly added works include Kiss the Hand You Cannot Bite 2019, which reimagines an Imelda Marcos bracelet as a three-metre concrete sculpture, are shown alongside works like I am singing a song that can only be borne after losing a country 2023, a drawing that turns the underside of Powhatan's Mantle - a Native American robe in the Ashmolean's collection - into an imagined map of colonised lands. Jasleen Kaur presents works from her nominated exhibition at Tramway, Glasgow. Rethinking tradition, Kaur creates sculptures from gathered and remade objects, each animated through an immersive sound composition. Items including family photos, a harmonium, Axminster carpet and kinetic worship bells are orchestrated to convey the artist's upbringing in Glasgow. A central feature is music, which is used to explore both inherited and hidden histories. Yearnings 2023, is an improvised vocal soundscape of the artist's voice, which is layered over snippets of pop songs playing from the speakers of Sociomobile 2023, a vintage Ford Escort covered with a large doily crocheted from cotton and filling the space with Kaur's own musical memory. Delaine Le Bas presents a restaging of her nominated exhibition at the Secession, Vienna. For her Turner Prize presentation, the artist has transformed the gallery into a monumental immersive environment filled with painted fabrics, costume, film and sculpture. Presented across three chambers, the work addresses themes of death, loss and renewal, and draws on the rich cultural history of the Roma people and the artist's engagement with mythologies. Textile sculpture Marley 2023, for example, reimagines Dickens' ghostly eponymous character as a harbinger of chaos, welcoming the viewer to this carefully constructed and captivating world, whilst the film Incipit Vita Nova 2023, projected onto organdie fabric, transports the viewer deep into a dreamlike sequence, matching the fluidity and distortion of the mirrored walls around it. Claudette Johnson presents a series of works from her nominated exhibitions at The Courtauld Gallery, London and Ortuzar Projects, New York, alongside new works. Using pastels, gouache, oil and watercolour, Johnson creates striking figurative portraits of Black women and men, often depicting family and friends. Her works counter the marginalisation of Black people in Western art history, shifting perspectives and investing her portraits with a palpable sense of presence. Friends in Green + Red on Yellow 2023 represents a recent development in her practice of creating double portraits, whilst Pieta 2024 is one of the artist's first works on wood, made from pastel and oil on bark cloth. You will find out more about the Turner Prize 2024 exhibition by visiting the following pages of the Tate website - https://www.tate.org.uk/whats-on/tate-britain/turner-prize-2024 Image show the entrance to Tate Britain with two red banners reading 'Tate Britain' and 'Free For All'

Ever wondered how people spend their spare time? A new exhibition celebrating the U.K.'s hobbies opened on July 18 in Croydon, featuring over 14,000 items, including collections and creations. It's the idea of Hetain Patel, himself a dedicated hobbyist, and the organization Artangel who have taken over Grant's Entertainment Centre with the exhibition. Called "Come As You Really Are," it displays people's passions—whether it's collecting plastic bags or creating cosplay costumes. Patel says he felt entrusted by the hobbyists to present their secrets. "Sometimes the work's made by communities of people, like some of the quilts for example, or pompoms. But oftentimes, it's people just working on their own, kind of squirreling away in their kitchen or their bedroom, making a miniature or something small and often for themselves. They might show it to some people close to them, but it's not something that they necessarily talk a lot about." Patel has a few items at the exhibition, including plenty of Spider-Man outfits he made at his kitchen table and a Transformer he made in his dad's garage with car parts. Plus, a new piece of work where he hand-tufted a replica of his grandmother's carpet and used it to cover a Ford Escort car. Making the rug took nine months. Also on display are sculptures, miniatures, nail art, 55,000 pompoms and Warhammer figurines. Miranda Worby's collection of 4,000 My Little Ponies is one of the highlights. A fan since she was a young girl, Worby lent her display of the toys to the exhibition, admitting that she has almost the same number again in storage at home. "Come As You Really Are" opened on July 18 and will be showing in Croydon until October 20 before going on a tour of the U.K. in 2025. This article was provided by The Associated Press.

Steve is feeling better after his recent illness left him bedridden. Guess how many buzz topics we cram into the first minute of the show? Harrison Butker's anti-feminist message which follows Catholic dogma reminds us that Butker isn't the first idiot kicker in the NFL. Have you seen the Italian gas nozzle ass blaster? It's a real hoot! Patrick Mahomes is trying to hide his Kermit The Frog voice in public. Jerry Seinfeld's newest film Unfrosted isn't high on the watch list for Steve or Luke. Luke is pissed about Jerry Seinfeld's outdated ways. Govier was losing interest in Michigan football back in his 20's, but he didn't see it all the way through. Follow your own voice! What's more depressing? Catholic priest abuse or the Holocaust? We're sorry for forcing you into making choice in this nightmare scenario. Govier recalls the crappy Ford Escort he wanted to buy after his high school graduation, but his friend Brandon ended up buying it with his graduation money. Steve remembers cramming five people into that thing. Did your parents drive an Escort once a upon a time? We got emails! Finn Gurrer must find out how the fellas feel about constipation. Then the back up of backed up tales begins. Govier's second stepdad had crappy issues plus he looked like Gordy from ABC Warehouse. The infamous Jason Rehnlund from high school will always be associated with the NES Tetris music from a song created many moons ago about the man himself & his annoying ways. Steve found a doppelganger for our friend Chad named Professor Green. Bill Burr gave Bill Maher a hard time on Maher's podcast recently and Luke loves it. Remember Gus Macker basketball tourneys? Govier shares memories from all the cars he had as a high schooler. Luke wants everybody to know how funny Sam Morrill is. It's a new episode so of course there is more Israeli/Palestinian rhetoric for you all with still no peace in sight. Shopper's Drug Mart in Toronto wants volunteers to work for free. This is for real. We love you all! This talk show is not the same without you listening and emailing us your highly entertaining thoughts. We close the show with Everything's Ruined by Faith No More. Just one decade into their journey, Cosworth had dominated IndyCar racing and changed the face of Formula 1. But while any other company would be satisfied with that kind of record, Mike and Keith were far from done. Even though Cosworth already had a stack of incredible achievements under its belt, what the company has been able to achieve post-1970 is just as, if not more, revolutionary. But how would the lessons Cosworth learned in their early years affect their philosophy moving forward? How would their incredible accomplishments on the asphalt translate to the dirt? And how could a company use principles from the 50s to revolutionize the industry well into the 21st Century? Thanks to our sponsors: Explore 2024 with Lectric eBikes. Andrew Lennox took over as the CEO of The Guide Dogs for the Blind Association in September 2023. We thought we'd give him a little time to get his feet under the table but now he joins us to describe his vision for the future of the charity and what they plan to do about the long waiting lists for new and replacement dogs.Roger Sharp has always had a passion for cars; building them, repairing them and racing them and when he lost his sight at the age of 48, that passion didn't fade. Roger has finished rebuilding a classic Ford Escort, while without vision. On January 18, 1989, Don Piper was on his way home from a conference in Texas when a semi-trailer truck struck his Ford Escort while crossing a bridge. A true story of death and life where he was pronounced dead at the scene, and for the next 90 minutes Don had a near-death experience where he tells us where he went and what he experienced. Don Piper is featured in the movie After Death , released in theaters in 2023. It is a fascinating film covering several near-death experience stories and studies of NDE's. DEAD Talks with David Ferrugio engages death a little bit differently. Each new guest shares their experience with grieving or perspective on death in a way that shatters the “don't talk about death” taboo. Grief doesn't end; it evolves. Having lost his father on September 11th when he was 12, he learned the importance of discussion and sharing other people's stories. DEAD Talks Podcast hopes to make it a little easier to talk about grief, loss, death, mourning, trauma, or whatever it may be. You may cry, but you also may laugh. The lights were but a blur from the window as they roared down the M1 in the pissing rain. Horns blared and the occasional squeal of brakes was all that could be heard over the pounding from the car stereo. Everything inside the motor was banging and rumbling beneath the strain as they drove onwards into the darkness as fast as they could. They'd probably never get away with it - at least they'd tried. What was it? A stolen motor careering up the highway in the dead of night on a Tuesday? Of course it was, a Ford Escort to say the least, hitting 145 with the most brutal pedal to the metal in the glow of the orange floodlights. In the distance they could hear the sirens coming, it would all be over soon, up in flames in the back end of nowhere as they ran into the darkness. Papa Nugs is set to self release a new EP which can only be described as being 'no holds barred'. We are talking hair raising dancefloor pumpers reminiscent of old Techno raves, Dance Mania bangers and all of that other good stuff which happened in between.
1 Kings 17:1-16– Pray– Running on Empty Almost everyone who has driven an automobile has, at some time or another, experienced an occasion when the needle on the gas gauge was on “e.” I have even had the needle to go past “e,. In 1994, I was driving a 1986 Ford Escort and on my way to USC-Aiken I gave out of gas two miles from the gas station. It was my fault because my parents told me to get gas the night before, but I wanted to wait until I get to Edgefield because the gas was cheaper there than in McCormick. Not a smart move. Needless to say, mom and brother brought me gas to get me to school, but it was not without my MOM's sharp tongue. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/rev-edwina-d-perrin/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/rev-edwina-d-perrin/support

Now you can receive the benefit of Frederick's mentorship and experience through his book, Business $uperfans. Born in rural France, Frederick spent summers on his grandfather's vineyard in France, where he developed a love for French wine. As a youth, he showed a strong aptitude for engineering and competed in drafting and design competitions. After winning numerous engineering awards, he became a draftsman working on numerous automotive projects. He was selected to design the spot weld guns for the 1982 Ford Escort car. That led to Frederick joining the emerging computer-aided design (CAD) and computer-aided manufacturing (CAM) industry, in which he quickly climbed the ranks. While working for a CAD/CAM company as an application engineer, an opportunity presented itself that enabled Frederick to transition into sales. It was the right decision, and he never looked back. In the thirty-plus years Frederick has been selling, he has earned a reputation as the go-to guy for small companies that want to expand their business domestically or internationally. This role has allowed him to travel to over thirty countries and counting. When abroad, Frederick's favorite pastime is to go exploring for hours, not to mention enjoying some of the local cuisine and fine wines. Frederick is a former runner and athlete. Today, you can find him hiking various trails with his significant other, Kiley Kaplan. When not writing, selling, speaking, or exploring, he is cooking or building things. The award-winning author, speaker and top sales executive spends his time inspiring others to achieve their highest business goals. Now you can receive the benefit of Frederick's mentorship and experience through his book Business Superfans. Welcome, Frederick. Frederick Good morning! Marlana So first, explain to us what exactly is a superfan? How would you define that? Frederick Let's think of a sports team. So, the best way I can explain that is, we've all watched football or European soccer or baseball and stuff, and we'll see the fan that's in there. And it's got their faces painted. They got the jerseys on they got the hats; they got the banners; they got the bumper stickers on their cars. That's a superfan. And, you know, they're enthralled and just energized, and their energy's contagious, and they're promoting their team? And if you think about it, is the sports team paying them for that? No. So are they making money off for their merchandise? Of course. So, they're getting free publicity. They're getting somewhere that it's talking about the team and all that PR, they're getting other people sucked into the team to watch the team and everything else. So, the idea came about through my sales experience for many, many years was Why can't a business apply the same methodology to create their own superfans for their business to become promoting them? So, you know, there's people talk about brand advocates? Well, you know, I look at it as Okay, brand advocates cool. But a super fan is super cool. Because it's in my mind is supersedes the advocate, because they're in a sense fanatic of the business, and...
How to develop a 2L four-cylinder to handle 46 PSI, and 700lb/ft of torque at low RPM.Originally based on the 1972 Ford Pinto platform that would have been lucky to hit 100HP, at the Goodwood Festival of Speed we spent a bit of time chatting to Julian Godfrey who you may recognise as engine and electronics mastermind behind Ken Block's ‘Cossie V2' build to find out what it takes to develop the now legendary 2L 4 cylinder YB Cosworth engine to produce 600-700hp reliably and even surpass that magic 1000hp mark.Use ‘PODCAST75' for $75 off your first HPA course here: https://hpcdmy.co/hpa-tuned-inWith most of Julian's builds being used for rally and rallycross racing which employs the use of restrictor plates, a lot of the power and torque developed needs to be low down in the rev range which can essentially double the amount of time the engine internals are required to withstand the incredible pressures that a high output of torque produces. To give some figures, around 700lb/ft (949Nm) of torque and up to 46psi (3.2bar) of boost will be produced low in the rev range. Cylinder head sealing is discussed and how a Coopers Ring (aka Wills Ring) works along with the use of Nikasil and titanium nitride coatings, aftermarket sleeve technology and the pros and cons of both ductile iron and steel liners including their limits. The inconsistency of factory castings, how Julian entered into the motorsport industry and got involved with the YB Cosworth platform via Ford Sierra rally cars and then, of course, the Ford Escort. Also covered are some of the major design changes that are required to the YB block and set up to handle the 200lb/ft to 700lb/ft torque jump including the use of a billet sump that helps improve and spread the clamping load required to keep it all together along with some of the major differences between the areas of focus on a road vs race engine.Want to learn how to tune EFI? Full of energy, big personality, mountainous laugh is underwhelming when describing John Kelly. He has lived an amazing life and in his late 30s has more life experience than more 70 year olds. During the podcast we spoke about F1, previous cars, military vehicles, Corvettes, overpaying for cars and totaling a 98 Ford Escort. A guy that is one of the reasons why the podcast came to fruition he is an inspiration to me through his work helping Veterans by advocating to suicide prevention.
Dear Mr. Jim Farley,I'm one voice of endless it seems some days. And we are rooted together - even through the storms and raging waters. Hey 2022 - my what a wild one so far. So much, in fact, it seems that perhaps - as some would say…we - us car biz folks may have hit a wall with this EV (electric vehicle) vision you've released recently in the press. Now - Im not normally a main stream media type (let's go Brandon) - but I couldn't help login per the ush - do a little scrollsie scroll and bam - even outside of my nerdy automotive forums the headline is everywhere that depicts the direct to consumer model vision with the Ford EVs.We don't know eachother, so I'll share a humorous flaw on myself - I like to have things explained to me like I'm a third grader when it involves intrquecies that may be new to me. So, in return I wanted to ask a few questions in a basic 3rd grade language that come right from my core and the mindset of the last 15 years since my heels burned on the pavement taking my first up at Heller Ford in San Diego Ca. 1. Does this vision of yours potentially eliminate the salesperson role? My very first day ever learning car sales - was that the potential was endless in this business if you retain your customers, treat em like gold and always be their go to person anything CarBiz related.Does this just get thrown out the window? I cringe when I watch the Carvana and Vroom commercials because they tap into the consumer psychology and pain triggers from the sleezy car experience they suffered from once upon a time. I'll tell you what though. When you sweat, bleed and win with the dealers, salespeople and internet teams through the years - you level in line with the good ones. The good stores, the people within them. Watch it all unfold thru time and it's a fact: the good ones - are the baddest hardest working people on the planet. With kids and families of their own - and yet who lay it all on the line for their customers. Your brand. So much in fact - we have a high divorce rate (welcome to the club) many rarely see their kids and do the math, carry the ten and probability says more time is spent in a dealership, sun up to sun down that with their own loved ones at home. Just like that - does this not matter to you? 2. When was the last time you picked up a telephone and took real Ford Direct non third party lead yourself? Was it a phone call did you would make? A text? An email cause that's all they put with a bad phone number. If the answer to when - is anything less than today - I recommend you do so. It can be a fun game and give you a scosh of the hartache internet sales and BDC teams get to experience by the minute. It's a thrill I'll tell ya.Your vision paints the scenario like a customer who types in their information online is ready to buy and just wants an easy seamless experience. That's what I was always taught when I transitioned into internet sales from the floor. But on the daily as I work with internet leads today - even when people fill out credit apps the pattern life of any internet rep or BDC department you ask who do these calls, textile texts and emails on the 9 days a week and 90 katrillion seconds a day will consecutively tell you they have to chase. Not just chase - but even after all the chasing we get told some pretty knarly things that just make no sense / oh I didn't know I was clicking. Oh I'm not ready. Oh call me back. Oh I'm at work I'll call you back.Seems legit. Except then when you connect again the weirdest sentences come straight from their mouth - I'll keep this episode free of swear words, but when we do call back like we were asked we get called lots of colorful names. Or I don't know if this one is any better “we bought elsewhere”I don't know who started the rumor like it's going to be this allll the sudden epiphany or something in the water when customers stop doing this - it won't be actually. The consumer to dealer relationship for whatever reasons you wanna title it - is different than any other b2b relationship. Any normal potential client who said they would call me back would actually call me back. I'm speaking from being a consultant and trainer when I have to call a dealer owner or Gm. But when I reverse my hat and wear my alias Elise Timberlake BDC role working with dealer internet teams as one - I'll tell you what. It's not even close to the same. BDC reps gotta drink 6 packs of Red Bull just to handle the nonsense in a normal bell 8 hour shift. Let's fix this part first. 3. What is the #1 top reason how a dealer can benefit from this envisioned consumer direct model? I mean. There's gotta be a slew of them I'm sure. Right? With such an futuristic vision expressed in confidence im just curious on the top reason. The number one. The above all hum dinger that is going to make this all come together. You know Mr Farley…My dad sold cars my whole childhood - he missed most school events or basketball games because he was doing bell shifts at The local ford dealership down the street from my high school. My first car that I saved my paychecks for was a 1996 Ford Escort that hustled me thru high school into three jobs after my HSG degree (high school graduate to) and this same little grandmother white escort carried all my papers that I folded loaded and threw for a paperoute at 2am when I was 20 years old.I sold my first Ford green pea into the car biz when I was 23 and that night on the phone told my mom that i wanted to make it big in the business from the belief that drank and I was trained on my first day learning sales or car sales at this ford store that took a chance on a Starbucks barista If I set myself apart from the stereotype. If I give customers a great experience, easy and honest then I can earn them for life. I told her I wanted to be the number one car salesperson in the country and have my name on a billboard one day all based on this belief that the CarBiz potential is endless when you do these things. For the majority of us, thru it all - but we can even just say the last three seasons of our country or so - we still believe this. And breath it. And Drench in it and make endless sacrifices to do so. These headlines and visions most definetly cause fear among some - who are bouncing out and have been left to question if their is a future career in perhaps an industry that they only know. So they say we've hit a wall. But regardless, the size of the wall and fear and push that it's built with - the roadblocks with pretty clear intention to eliminate us, the blood and backbone on the daily - my belief is truly this hehAnd I'll say it for everyone even if you've dropped out already and are way in the back- that wall - it doesn't matter. Why? Because those of us, and there's a storm - like me who will go till the wheels fall off - us, we - no question - will break the wall down anyways. PS: my dad got out of the car business when I turned 18. These days, I'm working the saturdays and missing weekend bbqs at his house. Enjoying the show? Leave a rating and review!

Robert from Los Angeles has just about had it with the traffic on his local, bumper-to-bumper, take-no-prisoners highway and he's begun jousting with aggressive tractor trailer drivers to vent his frustration. To put it mildly, the truckers aren't amused or intimidated by Robert in his Ford Escort and they are letting him know this in a road-ragey kind of way. Can Tom and Ray calm Robert down, or will he end up 'flattened on the 405'? Also, a new puzzler and more calls right here on the Best of Car Talk.
