Along the banks of the Red River in Adams, TN sits the remnants of an influential, yet sometimes forgotten town: Port Royal. The town heritage is now stewarded by Tennessee State Parks. At only 30-acres, Port Royal State Park is the second smallest State Park in Tennessee but the area had a big and historic influence on our state. The town rose in prominence as an important commercial hub in the newly founded state of Tennessee. But you did not have to live in Port Royal to experience it. Businesses relied on Port Royal's waterway connections to larger towns, enslaved people built the structures, and thousands of Cherokee were forcibly marched through the town as part of the Trail of Tears. In this River Talk, we are joined by Port Royal State Park Ranger Bobby Cooley to explore the history and influence of Port Royal. Woven throughout the story of Port Royal is the influence of one waterway, the Red River, on the growth of the town. An episode devoted to a few lesser known topics relations to New York Wines including growing in the Hudson River Region, Lake Erie and the burgeoning urban winery scene. An historic growing region, the Hudson River Region is one of the oldest established AVAs in the US having received the designation in 1982. It's also home to the oldest commercial vineyard and the oldest continuously active winery, Brotherhood Winery (1839), having survived prohibition by making sacramental wine. Only a 45-minute drive from Manhattan, grape growing takes place largely on the western shores of the Hudson River Valley that stretch from just south of Albany to just north of the city, following the path of the river to its end in the Atlantic Ocean. We'll also take a look at the grapes grown on the southern shores of Lake Erie and although largely for juice and table grapes, also by a growing number of wineries. Who says you can't make wine in big cites? The fact that there are no vineyards in the city doesn't seem to inconvenience the swelling number of intrepid New York urban winery owners who source their grapes largely from Long Island and the Finger Lakes. John and Sara investigate the challenges of trucking grapes in from nearby wine regions, the relationships they develop with growers and how they virtually transport city-folk into New York State vineyards. All this and more in this 5th and final episode of the New York wine podcast series.Joining the Thieves in a round table discussion are  Matthew Spaccarelli of Fjord Vineyards in the Hudson Valley, Mario Mazza of Mazza Wines in Lake Erie, Colleen and Sebastian Hardy of Living Roots in Rochester and Christopher Nicolson of Red Hook Winery in Brooklyn, New York.  This episode was produced in partnership with the New York Grape & Wine Foundation.

Spanning a large portion of New York, just about an hour north of Manhattan, lies one of the oldest winemaking regions in the US: The Hudson River Region AVA. This week Casey Erdmann and Matt Spacarelli of Fjord Vineyards join to talk about the Hudson River Region and the innovative things they are doing there.  To start the show, MC Ice and I give a quick overview of the area: We go WAY back to the glaciers and talk about how this area came to have so many different soil types, a varied terrain, and the mighty Hudson River. We discuss the continental climate, and the challenges that come with heat and humidity (hint: grape vine diseases)  We talk about how large the region is. It encompasses all or part of big counties:  Columbia, Dutchess, Orange, Putnam, Rockland, Sullivan, Ulster, and Westchester. It is 224,000 acres, but just 450 acres are planted to wine grapes We discuss common grapes here: Vitis labrusca (native): Concord, Delaware, Niagara French-American Hybrids: Seyval Blanc, Vidal Blanc,  Baco Noir (among others) Vitis vinifera that is cold tolerant: Riesling, Chardonnay, Cabernet Franc  Then I discuss the region with Casey and Matt. Matt grew up in the region and his family owns the historic Benmarl Winery where he is the head winemaker and GM. He gives us great insight and detail around the region -- its history, its challenges, and its opportunities.  We have a lively discussion around French-American hybrids (we may or may not discuss how they taste like burnt hair), and what their role is for wine regions. Finally we discuss Fjord Vineyards which was founded in 2013 so the couple to make wines of Vitis vinifera from local parcels that express the terroir of the region. They make balanced, sustainable wines of Riesling, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Albariño, and Cabernet Franc that reflect where they are grown and are delicious!    Thanks to our sponsors this week: Thanks to YOU! The podcast supporters on Patreon, who are helping us to make the podcast possible and who we give goodies in return for their help! Arts Weekly—a podcast about Arts and Entertainment in Augusta GA and the River Region. This week Brenda Durant took a minute to reflect on the life of Ellis Johnson. Mr. Johnson died this week leaving a legacy of support for the arts especially the Jessye Norman School who named their Gallery after Ellis and his wife Ann. Ellis was on the Board of the Arts Council when I was hired in 1997, he was president a few years later, hosting the staff for regular lunches to catch up on what we were working on and where we were going. I loved when he would talk about himself- the premier tenor in Augusta in the 50’s and 60’s later supporting the Augusta Chorale, The Arts Council, The Jessye Norman School for the Arts and numerous arts events- always escorted by his elegant wife. Coco Rubio shared a photo of Ann and Ellis walking into the Miller Theatre on opening night; they were first thru the doors. The perfect couple to be the first to greet this downtown jewel. In the next segments I covered events for this week-end and beyond.

Unplugging is not something we do well in our warp-speed these days - but we should. In fact, there are scientific studies that suggest that being able to truly relax and rest has been shown to boost productivity, increase creativity, and reduce the long-term risks of potentially fatal ailments. So we decided to do just that - unplug a bit, reconnect, increase our creativity, and visit a place that many haven't even heard of - Texas Hill Country River Region. On This Podcast Episode:Sometimes we all need to escape the hustle and bustle of our daily lives to find a place where the pace is not so frantic, the locals are a lot friendlier, and the beauty of nature envelopes your soul with a warm Earth Day-esque hug.My co-host, Jeff Game, discuss how unplugging vacations can be one of the best investments you can make (not only as a couple but also in helping us get back in touch with what matters most in life). We recently decided to leave our city slicker lives behind for a few days, unplug and explore the quintessential Americana Texas Hill Country River Region, located in Uvalde County. And, it kind of ruled! As we hopped in our rental car for the hour and a half drive from San Antonio to Texas Hill Country River Region, cranked up our Willie Nelson playlist and could already feel the stress fall away along the roadside.Links Mentioned:Visit UvaldeFrio RiverFrio Bat FlightElk Creek StablesCowboy StorytellerLeakey Bear’s DenThanks for Tuning In:Thanks for tuning in to listen to this episode of Millennial Money. Before the arrival of Europeans and their agriculture, Australian ducks only had to compete with other native birds and animals, as well as Aboriginal hunters. However, the introduction of water intensive agricultural activity by Europeans changed all this and in particular rice cultivation has altered most river systems in Australia, and as a result the habitat for ducks. The guest on this episode of the Exploring Environmental History podcast is Emily OGorman, an Associate Research Fellow at the Australian Centre for Cultural Environmental Research of the University of Wollongong. She is an expert on Australian flooding and river history and examines on this podcast the ways in which ducks as well as people negotiated the changing water landscapes of the Murrumbidgee River caused by the creation of rice paddies.
