In this week's episode I am joined by a few different people. First we hear from Jimmy Weaver and Anthony Landreth, two of the men responsible for putting on this event. Jimmy has done numerous coon hunting events to get youth involved over the years and this year decided he wanted to expand things. He enlisted Anthony and a host of others to do just that. Then we hear from 3 of the youth hunters that won coon hound puppies, Branch, Zadie, and Drake. This was such an awesome event and if you are in the vicinity of West TN I would highly recommend taking any youth in your life to this event! Wildlife biologist Bob Ford is executive director of The Hatchie River Conservancy, a West Tennessee organization with the mission of conserving and sustaining the natural integrity and the scenic beauty of the Hatchie State Scenic River and its watershed. The Hatchie River is the longest free-flowing tributary of the lower Mississippi River; it harbors the largest forested floodplain remaining in Tennessee and is the only river in the state that is designated as a State Scenic River in its entirety. As Ford shares in this episode, many see the Hatchie as a restorative, soul-nourishing sanctuary—a sacred place to feel connected to something larger than themselves. It is an ancient, beautiful, biologically rich, uniquely wild river that courses its way through six counties in West Tennessee. Ford also shares a bit of the history of past efforts to protect the Hatchie along with conservation initiatives taking place today led by The Hatchie River Conservancy and others. This episode is sponsored by Moustos Pasta & Grill.

We had the pleasure of interviewing WILSN over Zoom video!Australian vocal powerhouse WILSN is thrilled to announce her debut album, Those Days Are Over, out February 3 on Ivy League Records/Universal MusicAustralia (Rolling Blackouts C. F., Hatchie). She also revealed a US headline tour (dates below), following her run with Allen Stone. A fusion of pop, soul, Motown and jazz both classic yet contemporary, WILSN's unbelievable voice & honeyed sound on the record are showcased on single & video debuted today on Under the Radar – “Hurts So Bad” featuring Josh Teskey, lead singer of award-winning Melbourne blues-rock band The Teskey Brothers (even Chris Hemsworth is a fan). Built from a trumpet melody by friend & acclaimed horn player Billy Aukstik (Mark Ronson, Erykah Badu, Sharon Jones, Charles Bradley), the heart-wrenching break-up song is accompanied by a video from Triana Hernandez, where the masterful performers are in full flight. “Right before Covid hit, I toured through Europe and the UK with The Teskey Brothers,” WILSN explains. “I was already a fan before this but seeing their show every night and occasionally getting up to sing with them in their set really solidified my love for the band. Josh is one of my favourite singers in the world and I feel super lucky he's singing with me on my debut record.”Studying at Melbourne, Australia's prestigious Victorian College of the Arts and playing shows there, WILSN – real name Shannon Busch - was soon noticed by international publishing juggernaut Pulse Music Group (Kehlani, Yebba) / Native Tongue (Courtney Barnett, Aldous Harding) - even going on to play the Melbourne Grand Prix. She briefly moved to Nashville to work with GRAMMY-winning writers, which helped hone her craft for this full album. The influence of soul and powerhouse vocal divas loom large over her debut album, Those Days Are Over. Songs like “If You Wanna Love Me,” “Tell Me” and “Hurts So Bad” ooze with the sound, feel and all the emotion of classic soul. Yet while the album is steeped in the sounds of yesterday, WILSN and her partner and producer Stephen Charles (Blessed, Tyne James Organ) took care to balance those classic elements with modern production techniques, leaning on Charles' background in hip hop production to amplify the grooves, dialing up the bottom end and keeping a modern excitement in the mix to make sure the record stood up sonically to contemporary releases. The result is a masterful work, at once timeless and of the now. The album will also be on Apple Music Spatial Audio and vinyl via Vinyl Me Please. We want to hear from you! Winter - sunday from the 2022 album What Kind of Blue Are You? on Bar/None. Songwriter Samira Winter (who records as Winter) returns with her sophomore full-length, What Kind of Blue Are You?, described as an "emotional excavation of [her] purest self." The new album features guest appearances from artists like Hatchie and Sasami. "“I feel like I've come full circle, making an album that my 22-year-old self who just started Winter would love," she says in a press release. "It's my inner shadow girl, revealing herself in all her brokenness, despair, and beauty.” Winter describes today's Song of the Day as "a fever dream meditation on social media toxicity," a topic she says is "always on my mind and generates a lot of fear and anxiety for me. It's a critique on social media's effect on mental health and contorted beauty standards for women." Enny, Priya Ragu, Hatchie and Miso Extra discuss writing gibberish, why music is a form of catharsis and mindfulness, repurposing melodies, holding on to demos, and dealing with the haters. Enitan Adepitan, better known as Enny, is a London-based rapper, singer and songwriter who started on the mic at primary school. Her music blends sharp, honest lyrics with beats rooted in the gospel, jazz, hip-hop and garage she grew up listening to. Australian singer-songwriter Hatchie has been dubbed the “dream-pop idol of tomorrow”. Tamil-Swiss artist Priya Ragu's forward thinking R&B has been supported by some of the biggest tastemakers around the world. Born to refugees of the Sri Lankan civil war, she was raised in the Swiss city of St Gallen before settling in East London. British-Japanese rapper, singer and producer Miso Extra grew up surrounded by a melting pot of sonic and cultural influences, which has resulted in a sound that blends old school hip-hop beats, progressive grooves and Japanese rapping.
Hatchie talks about the themes of shame and self-acceptance on her latest record, 'Giving The World Away,' and how she worked a day job during COVID to save up to tour so she could pay her band and crew. “I really wanted this record to be as big as possible on tour so I wanted to add extra members to the lineup and I wanted to have our own soundperson and have a lighting show so that meant that I had to make some personal sacrifices and had to go back to work part-time so I could balance that and budget for it so that I can save up and not have to pay myself on tour, whereas I have to pay a band,” Hatchie says. This week's show covers new music from Brisbane's Hatchie, the excellent pairing of LA's Mykki Blanco and Michael Stipe--of R.E.M. fame!--, a bit of techno from one of the two new albums from Stockholm's Axel Boman, and some excellent music from Bremen's Saâda Bonaire. For the archive pick this week, Brendan takes us back to 1978 for soul/funk gem from a band called Leo's Sunshipp. We sample “Give Me The Sunshine,” a warm-weather jam that prefigures g-funk by a good fifteen years. Of course, there are six more bonus tracks, but you have to sign up for our email newsletter to get those. (Great music in there, ladies and gentlemen.) It's pretty easy to do, if you just click this link. (And do so without fear. We won't misuse your email address, as this show is run by two guys, Mark and Brendan; Not some faceless corporation.) Lastly, don't miss our fabulous Spotify playlists. We make one for each episode of the show, so grab the latest if you are up to date, and dig into previous episodes if you are new here, or just curious. Have a terrific week!
