Henry speaks with Stacy Janes, program coordinator for the Community Relief Fund of Glasgow and Barren County, about how the federal SNAP shutdown is increasing demand for local food pantries and hurting families who rely on benefits. The episode explains how people can access help — SNAP applications through the Department of Child-Based Services, or immediate food assistance from Community Relief at 317 Columbia Avenue — and highlights the pantry's hours, ID requirements, and phone line for support. Stacy describes rising need, recent distribution numbers, and urges monetary and food donations so the community can continue to feed vulnerable families during this disruption.

Our food system is reaching a breaking point—and the warning signs are already on our plates. From disappearing crops to rising health costs, it's clear that the way we grow and eat food can't continue as it has. Today on The Dr. Hyman Show, I sit down with Sam Kass, former White House chef and senior policy advisor, to explore his new book The Last Supper: The Politics of the End of Food. We talk about what's driving the crisis, what's already being done to repair it, and how each of us can help build a food system that supports both people and the planet. Join us for the full conversation on YouTube, or listen wherever you get your podcasts. We discuss: • What if the foods you eat every day are quietly shaping both your health and the planet's? • Learn how a healthier food system could mean cleaner air, better soil, and stronger communities. • See why so many farmers want to do better—and what keeps them stuck. • How everyday food choices shape the culture that businesses and policymakers follow. • Simple actions you can take now to help build a food system that serves all of us. If this really is our “last supper” with the food system as we know it, we have the power to decide what comes next. Let's make it a meal that feeds both people and the planet. On this edition of APTN News InFocus, host Cierra Bettens explores why food insecurity in Nunavut has hit a breaking point. In a territory where climate change and inflation are making food more expensive and harder to access, many families struggle to put healthy meals on the table. For some, even country foods like seal and caribou are out of reach. A pediatrician working in the community says Nunavut's crisis is the worst she's seen. In 2022, Statistics Canada reported that 79 per cent of children under 14 in the territory lived in food-insecure households. APTN News correspondent Jesse Staniforth recently published an in-depth article on the issue. With demand at Iqaluit's food centre expected to hit 70,000 meals this year, Cierra talks with Jesse about what's happening and what needs to change. • • • APTN National News, our stories told our way. Caleb is joined by Sam Kass, former senior food policy advisor to President Obama and the chef who cooked dinner for the first family most nights. Now a partner at a venture capital firm investing in food and agriculture tech, Sam has a new book out, The Last Supper: How to Overcome the Coming Food Crisis. The situation, he says, is bleak. Almonds, artichokes, chocolate, coffee, oysters, rice, wine — all at risk due to climate change. And that's not even close to the full list. Our food system is both driving the climate crisis and being devastated by it. But Sam argues we can still avert the worst if we start with culture, fix our policies, and deploy the right technology. We often talk about the global food crisis as if it's just about climate change, conflicts, or market disruptions. But beneath it all lies a silent, often overlooked driver—gender inequality. From who grows the food, who gets paid for it, who eats first at the dinner table, to who makes decisions about land—gender roles shape every layer of our food systems. And when women and marginalized groups are excluded, the impact ripples far beyond individuals. It weakens food security for entire families, communities, and regions. In this episode, we sit down with Dr. Ranjitha Puskur, Principal Scientist in the Gender and Livelihoods program at the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI). With years of on-the-ground research and policy experience, Dr. Puskur helps us understand why tackling gender inequality is central to solving food insecurity. We explore:• What gender inequality in food systems really looks like in everyday life• Why women—despite producing much of the world's food—are still among the hungriest• How food is distributed within households, and why “who eats first” matters• Local, community-driven actions that can shift entrenched gender roles• Real-world examples where empowering women has strengthened nutrition and food security outcomesIf you're curious about how addressing gender inequality can transform not just households but entire food systems, this conversation will give you fresh, grounded insights.About Nutrition Every Day: A special podcast series by The Good Sight and Rise Against Hunger India, bringing sharp, grounded perspectives on health and nutrition.CreditsHost: Shreya MGuest: Dr. Ranjitha PuskurResearch: Alisha CArtwork: Rajnikant SProduced by: The Good SightConcept: The Good Sight & Rise Against Hunger IndiaFor feedback or to participate, write to us at contact@thegoodsight.org#NutritionEveryDay #GenderEquality #FoodSecurity #SustainableNutrition #TheGoodSight #RiseAgainstHungerIndia #IRRI

[SciDev.Net] Millions of people parts of Africa are facing record levels of hunger, the UN World Food Programme has warned. Yet at the same time, the region is rapidly losing forests, one of its most valuable food sources.According to the Food and Agriculture Organization, the rate of forest loss in Africa has been increasing steadily over the last three decades, with 3.94 million hectares lost between 2010 and 2020. These forests are not just biodiversity hotspots, they are vital to the survival of millions of people who rely on them for wild foods, medicine, fuel, and income. The result is a vicious cycle. As food insecurity grows, people turn to forests for survival, increasing deforestation. But as these forests disappear, so too does a critical safety net that could help communities cope with hunger and climate shocks. In this episode of Africa Science Focus, reporter Michael Kaloki investigates why protecting forests is essential for food security across the continent.Laura Mukhwana, coordinator of the Global Landscapes Forum in Nairobi, Kenya, explains that forests play a direct role in local food systems. She also warns that forest conservation won't work without better communication between researchers and the communities who depend on these resources.Richard Sufo, a Cameroonian scientist at the Center for International Forestry Research and World Agroforestry, points to traditional agroforestry systems, where trees and crops grow together, as a powerful, homegrown solution. He says it is important to integrate traditional knowledge with modern science to protect forests and build resilient food systems. In Uganda, Joel Ngobi is putting these ideas into action. Through the School Food Forest Initiative, he combines indigenous knowledge with modern science to improve student nutrition and teach sustainable land management. His model empowers communities to grow their own food while conserving the land.------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------This podcast was supported by the Science Granting Councils Initiative which aims to strengthen the institutional capacities of 18 public science funding agencies in Sub-Saharan Africa.Africa Science Focus is produced by SciDev.Net and distributed in association with your local radio stationThis piece was produced by SciDev.Net's Sub-Saharan Africa English desk. Nearly half a million people in Gaza now face starvation, according to a new report from the IPC, the international panel of famine experts who advise the United Nations. For more than ten weeks, Israel has halted the flow of humanitarian aid into Gaza, to pressure Hamas to release Israeli hostages. Israel accuses Hamas of seizing aid, selling it on the black market and using aid distribution to reinforce its control of Gaza. The UN says hundreds of truckloads of lifesaving supplies are waiting at the border. Meanwhile, inside Gaza, food is scarce. Humanitarian groups like the UN World Food Programme (WFP) exhausted supplies of basic staples weeks ago, forcing them to shut down their kitchens and bakeries, and everyday Palestinians are grinding up pasta and lentils to make flour for bread. Antoine Renard of the WFP says when he was in Gaza last week, wheat flour was selling for $10 a pound. Juana Summers talks with Renard about what he's seen in Gaza, and what's next for the people there. For sponsor-free episodes of Consider This, sign up for Consider This+ via Apple Podcasts or at plus.npr.org. Both of their children also suffer from chronic illness- and they live together as roommates. They've both been on a weight-loss journey in the past year and want advice and guidance on how to help themselves and their children. On June 27th, a group of food security experts from the United Nations and major international relief agencies known as the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) released devastating new data on hunger in Sudan. Their data shows that over 755,000 people are experiencing catastrophic levels of food insecurity. This means that there are almost no coping mechanisms left, and people are starving to death. Those experiencing this extreme level of food insecurity are spread throughout several regions; it is not localized to just one part of the country. The cause is conflict. In April last year, a full-scale civil war erupted between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces. The food system in the country, including farmlands and trading routes, has been destroyed. Meanwhile, international humanitarian relief is being obstructed by the warring parties and not reaching people in need in sufficient numbers. My guest today, Dr. Oliver Kiptoo Kirui, is a Research Fellow with the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI). He recently conducted a large wartime household survey of food security in every region of Sudan. We discuss his findings in detail, as well as what can be done to reverse the massive food crisis gripping the country. The war does not look like it will end anytime soon, so in the midst of conflict, what can be done to limit deaths from starvation and widespread hunger?
The Chinese Communist Party (CCP) has been enacting policies that seem to suggest that China is facing a food crisis. Problems around food supply have been brewing for years in China, with serious water pollution, natural disasters, and the dwindling amount of arable land. The CCP used to heavily rely on imports, but economic lockdowns and contentious global trade policies are making that more difficult. Now, the regime is enacting policies that have analysts wondering if the food problem is worse than it seems. We'll discuss this issue in this episode of Crossroads.
